The recent snowstorm caused many
problems: Nearby, traffic was snarled,
people were stranded in cars, children
were stranded at school, and there
were over 1,000 auto accidents. Here
in Gainesville, businesses, schools, and
churches closed for a couple of days,
and yes, it also delayed production of
this newsletter! The call committee
interviews, midweek Bible study and all
other church events were postponed.
It’s easy to become frustrated when
things don’t go as planned.
For most of us, however, the snow
was just an inconvenience. Once
settled in our homes, not having to
worry about the icy roads, the
snow also became a blessing. It was
a time to curl up with a book
or to spend more time together with
our family.
Many times something that seems to
be a problem can actually be a
blessing. We tend to complain at
first, like Snoopy in the cartoon.
But we can also, like Snoopy, rejoice
in whatever comes
o u r w a y , f o r
we remember with St
Paul, that “…the
sufferings of this
present time are not
worth comparing with
the glory that is to be
revealed to us.” God
has a plan for us – as
individuals, and as a
church.
We rejoice that he is
in control of our lives
and our destiny. We,
too, can dance and
say “snow, snow,
beautiful snow!”

The LWML of Good Shepherd
Lutheran Church wanted to
highlight the current mission
programs that involve its own
m e m b e r s ; t h e r e f o r e ,
sponsoring this first mission
festival.
Fifty congregational members
enjoyed a “taste” of
Guatemalan black beans,
salsa, corn soup, spinach and
ham soup, flan, fried plantains and corn
tortillas while listening to the passionate
description of the recent mission trip to
A m a t i t l a n ,
Guatemala as told
by Betty Dyarmett,
Janet Fitzgerald,
Chris Worl and
Pam Jovaag.
The fellowship hall
was filled with
photo collages
depict ing the
Santa Cruz Lutheran
Church in Amatitlan
that was the base
camp for the mission
team, the surrounding
community, the local
people, landscapes,
flora, living conditions
of the eleven youth, our
mission team in action, and the culture. In
addition, tables laden with hand-woven
tablecloths, table runners, place mats,
dolls, pottery, and ministry materials lined
the perimeter walls.
Everyone was captivated by the emotional
stories and graphic pictures shared by the
mission team. Pam led the presentation
with a recap of the ministry and its growth
at Santa Cruz Lutheran Church under the
leadership of Dr. Elry and Liz Orozco and
stated the mission team’s goal – to “make
disciples” of the eleven youth and train
them to share the Gospel with their own
people. Betty recounted the experiences of
preparing and training the youth to be
disciples using a puppet ministry that tells
of God’s love for all people from creation
through Christ’s death and resurrection.
Janet shared details of the
young disciples in action as
the villagers kept coming, and
coming, and coming just to
see what was be ing
presented, how the Catholic
priest in one village stood
guard during the entire
presentation, and witnessing the sharing
of faith from a young disciple to a village
woman and her child. Chris concluded
the presentation with facts about the
Guatemalan culture and the incredible
“family” relationships that deepened
between us, our hosts – Dr. Elry and Liz,
and the unforgettable and beautiful youth
we worked with, side-by-side.
“When he (Jesus) saw the crowds, he had
compassion on them because they were
harassed and helpless, like sheep without a
shepherd. Then he (Jesus) said to his
disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the
workers are few. Ask the Lord of the
harvest, therefore, to send out workers into
his harvest field.” Matthew 9:36-37
- Pam Jovaag

Build a Future Full of Hope
Building a solid future for Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) churches and schools is
important. Building a solid financial future for your family is important too.
Do both with an investment with Lutheran Church Extension Fund (LCEF). When you invest
a portion of God’s blessings with LCEF, you contribute to your personal stewardship plan
and provide hope for ministries that need loans and ministry support services to stay vital
and responsive.
There are now more ways to share our blessings from God: as the number of investors
increase in our membership, our church can become eligible to receive a rebate from LCEF
on our loan. Visit lcef.org for investment information and to learn how our congregation can
get started in the Shared Blessings rebate program.
Also, a poster and some brochures are available in the information hallway between the
Narthex and the fellowship hall and on the brochure cabinet in the narthex.
LCEF is a nonprofit religious organization; therefore, LCEF investments are not FDIC-insured bank
deposit accounts. This is not an offer to sell investments, nor a solicitation to buy. LCEF will offer and sell its securities only in states where authorized. The offer is made solely by LCEF’s Offering Circular.
Investors should carefully read the Offering Circular, which more fully describes associated risks.
SUNDAY FELLOWSHIP: There
are plenty of opportunities to
serve. Get a friend to help
and check out the sign-up
sheet on the bulletin board in
the information hall to choose
your date. See Judy
Brookshire if you have any
questions.
CARNEVALE: In lieu of
Carnevale, this year the Youth
will be hosting their fundraising dinner on
March 8. See article elsewhere for more
information.
LENTEN SUPPERS: Again this year, we will
have suppers prior to the Wednesday night
Lenten services. The suppers will be every
Wednesday night from March 5 through
April 9 at 5:30. The suppers will be hosted
by various groups; menus will vary, chosen
by the host group. Cost is $3 for adults
and $1.50 for children 6 – 12. Proceeds
will be a fundraiser for the host group.
Host groups are:
March 5 - Parish Fellowship
March 12 - Choir
March 19 - LWML
March 26 - Jovaag Group
April 2 - To Be Announced
April 9 - Rehnberg Small Group
As you can see, we still have 1 date to fill.
If your group would like to participate,
please contact Judy Brookshire ASAP.
First come, first served. Support your
favorite group and enjoy a great meal!
Menus will be posted in
the bulletin the Sunday
prior to Wednesday’s
meal. This is really a
great deal – a good,
ine xpe ns ive d inne r
without cooking or dishes
to wash and great
fe l lowship bes ides!
Please join us as often as
you can.
CAR SHOW: Our fourth annual car show is
scheduled for March 15. Please see
separate article elsewhere in the
newsletter for further information.
EASTER BRUNCH: Plans are underway for
an Easter celebration. Plan to bring your
favorite brunch dish to share and join us
for this GSLC tradition. Scrambled eggs,
rolls, juice, coffee and milk will be
provided. Time and further details will be
announced later.
That’s it for now. Parish Fellowship hopes
you will take advantage of the various
events scheduled throughout the year. If
you have any suggestions for other outings
or activities you’d like to see us participate
in, please contact a member of the Parish
Fellowship committee. And – incidentally
– we’re always looking for anyone
interested in serving on our committee.
Our next meeting is scheduled for Sunday,
February 16, at 9:30 am.
- Judy Brookshire
“All you need is love.
But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.”
—Charles M. Schulz
Being in love is a good thing, but it is not the best thing. Love is a
deep unity, maintained by the will and
deliberately strengthened by habit; reinforced by the grace
which both partners ask and receive from God. On this love the engine of marriage is run; being in love was
the explosion that started it. -C.S. Lewis
FEBRUARY 2014
We continue to hold Sausage Biscuit
breakfasts each month as a fundraiser
toward sending delegates to the district
convention in September. Please support
our fundraising efforts.
All women are invited to attend the
monthly meetings of LWML on the second
Saturday and the second Tuesday of each
month at 10 am. Bible study is a major
part of LWML meetings.
Lutheran Women in Mission at Good
Shepherd, in an effort to increase mission
awareness within our congregation,
partnered with the Guatemalan Mission
Team to present “A Taste of Guatemala” on
February 2. The women prepared food
indicative of a Guatemalan menu. Photos
of the women who cooked and served the
food, as well as a sample plate are below.
LWML intends to continue hosting these
mission events, highlighting mission
outreach all around the world.

The 2014 Rose Parade float sponsored by Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) — and the only
Christian-themed entry among more than
40 floats in the Jan. 1 parade — received
the Princess Award trophy for “Most
Beautiful Float 35 Feet and Under.”
The flower-covered float’s “Jesus
Welcomes All” theme depicted people of
various nationalities being welcomed into
a church with open doors, illustrating that
“all tribes and nations would come to
know Christ as Lord,” that “Christ has
called His church to make disciples of all
nations” and that “by the grace of God,
there is salvation for all who believe,”
according to LHM.
There is an exciting new ministry opportunity in Northeast Georgia! Trinity and Christus
Victor Lutheran Churches in Athens, Georgia, are planning on planting a new mission
congregation in Commerce, Georgia. Right now we are informing churches and people in
the area of this ministry to gauge the level of interest. Beginning a new
congregation is a big undertaking that requires the help of many of God's
people. It also presents a great opportunity to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus
Christ. If you would be interested in assisting in this venture, especially if you live
in the general area of Commerce, we would love to hear from you. Please contact
Pastor Aaron Reinking of Trinity-Athens who is leading this mission. His phone number is
(706) 789-3951 and his email is [email protected]. May the Lord bless and guide
you in your service to Him.

Deadline for the
MARCH
Newsletter:
February 24
I want to encourage
congregation members to
ask students what is going
on with them as we will be
more diligent in informing
the congregation what we
are doing!
One thing that we have
started is on the second
Wednesday of every
month, we will be going
out to Good News At Noon
ministry to learn and grow
with the students there.
This ministry is full of students who are
learning about Christ just as we are, and
this partnership will help everyone grow in
their faith! This is a part of living out the
mission mindset that we feel God has given
every Christian, and, hopefully this will
expand past just Good News at Noon.
We also are very excited to have our youth
fundraising dinner on March 8! We hope
everyone can attend. All tickets purchased
earlier are still valid.
As we begin the New Year, the council
begins operating under the 2014 budget
approved by the Voters’ Assembly in
November of last year. The projects and
goals described in each board’s section of
that budget require funding. As a pastor
once said, “Don’t worry, there is plenty of
money, it’s all in your pockets.” A better
way to think of that is, the Lord has
already blessed me, what is my response?
In addition to the gift of salvation, the Lord
has provided us earthly gifts of talent and
treasure expecting us to be good stewards.

that our students learn God’s purpose and
his plan for the church while growing in
their faith at the same time.

Youth News
A Senior Men’s Fellowship was planned for
Thursday morning, January 30. As you know,
that was day two of the SNOW. Both hosts,
Don Smith and Paul Clarkson were unable to
attend, however several men braved the
weather and met in the fellowship hall!
Although off to a slow start, plans are for
more fellowship times for senior men of Good
Shepherd. Dates and times will be announced
in the bulletin, so watch for it!

Call Committee The Call Committee has completed a
second round of phone interviews. You will
be receiving timely updates during the
month of February as the Call process
progresses. While we work, continue to
pray for the Lord to identify to us the
pastor that He knows will fulfill His
purposes among us.
If you have any questions at any time,
please address them to one of the call
committee members: Doug Fuge
(Chairman), Sherry Anderson, Tabby
D’Antonio, Austin Denton, Suzy Eberle,
Janet Fitzgerald, Pam Jovaag, Jim Walker,

I have decided
to add a new
section to the
newsletter to
report on what
Wynn as a
professional church worker has been
doing. I thought it would be good for the
congregation to hear what our students
are doing as well as myself! That is the
excuse I am using to write more anyway.
2014 has been interesting so far to say
the least! Pastor got sick on the way to
church the other week so I got to give my
first message to the congregation! Many
of you don’t know this, however, DCEs
thrive in impromptu and pressure
situations. I joked with my mentor back in
Texas that if I keep getting chances like
this to lead and speak to our congregation
that I may just end up at seminary
studying to be a pastor! But I don’t think I
would ever convert to the dark side. Ha ha.
I appreciate Good Shepherd giving me the
opportunity to lead in the capacity that I
have been called. I have grown immensely. I
wanted to share a story about my friend Eric
and the work the Lord is doing through
him!!! Some of y’all may know that I have
been hanging out at an apartment complex
every Monday with people who are hurting
and don’t know Jesus. Eric and I have had a
relationship for months and months now,
and, through that relationship, he has
decided to follow Jesus!!! This is a work that
only Christ can do and it’s awesome
welcoming another brother into the family of
Christ! I’ll leave y’all with a quote from a
book I am reading by John Maxwell: “We
cannot lead anyone else further than we
have been ourselves.”

Social Ministry
During the month of December, the Food
Pantry served 27 families (54 adults and 34
children). This was a total of 88 individuals.
Eight Bibles were given to first time families.
This reflects three weeks of service since the
church was closed to the public for the
holidays the last week and a half of
December.
O u r t o t a l
numbers for
2013 were:
513 families
served: 830
adults and 619 children for a total of 1,449
individuals. Sixty-nine Bibles were
distributed. This count was for eleven
months. Due to construction we did not
open the pantry until February last year.
We are truly blessed with a congregation
who is concerned for the wellbeing of those
in need in our community. Your generosity
and support of the food pantry is greatly
appreciated.
Item for February: Support Souper Sunday
with a donation of canned soup all month.
This month our budgeted contributions
were $1,000 to CALMS (Central American
Lutheran Mission Society) and $2,500 to
University of Georgia Campus Lutheran
Ministry.

Festival, a community outreach program
through our food pantry. The show will run from
8:00 am through 1:00 pm.. There will be some
great cars, music, raffles and a lot of fun, AND
we will be offering a terrific breakfast for only

good weather! We will need plenty of help for a
successful show. Sign-up sheets will be posted
later for kitchen and serving help; bakers – we
will raffle off cakes and other baked goodies
throughout the day; parking help/hosts; and,
most importantly – customers! Please save the
date and plan to attend! More details in next
month’s newsletter.
FEBRUARY 2014 Page 8
We completed small group sign-ups in
January, with nineteen more people
joining one or more small groups, so we
now have about 108 people participating
in at least one group, including the choir.
We have fourteen groups meeting during
the spring semester. If you didn’t have a
chance to sign up yet, but are still
interested, please do so as soon as
possible by contacting either the small
group leader or me. The choices available
and contact information are posted on the
bulletin board near the fellowship hall.
Watch the announcements for start dates,
and please check your email, as many of
the leaders will contact members via
email.
Our members who have been participating
in small groups have found that they are a
great way to foster spiritual growth, as
well as a comfortable place to build
relationships with others in the
congregation and provide mutual care and
encouragement. Don’t miss out!

Addison Christine Eberle was born
January 24 at 10:53 am. She was 6 lbs
8 oz and 20 3/8" long. Addie and
mommy are both doing great! Daddy
and big brother Charlie are very proud!
Dear Good Shepherd family,
When I finally was able to return to church last Sunday (January 5), I had
no idea what a wonderful surprise awaited me! So many of you warmly
welcomed me back, and it touched my heart to learn that there were
special flowers and a special prayer in recognition of my 100th birthday.
I never imagined that following the service, I would be escorted to a
surprise gathering for me in the fellowship hall, with a marvelous table
of delicious refreshments, a spectacular, enormous birthday cake,
balloons and decorations, gifts and a collection of birthday cards from
so many people. Hearing my church family sing “Happy Birthday” and
sharing the occasion with so many of them truly made the memory of
this milestone birthday one I will always treasure. God has blessed me
in making me part of Good Shepherd, and I thank Him and all of you.
Love in Christ,
Emily Willers

On February 2, we celebrated “The
Purification of Mary and the
Presentation of Our Lord,” recalling
how Baby Jesus’ parents brought him
to Jerusalem and to offer a sacrifice.
Two “church elders” met them:
Simeon, who we assume was elderly
because he was ready to die, but for
his longing to see the Messiah; and
Anna, who was 84 — a “senior
citizen” by any account (Luke 2:22-40).
Their years didn’t make them elders, though, as much as
their wisdom and faith. Simeon was “righteous and devout.”
He came to the temple as the Holy Family did because
when the Spirit guided him to go, he knew the divine voice.
Then, despite the Messiah’s improbably young age, Simeon
recognized Jesus and spoke God-given words about him.
Anna was a “prophet” who had spent countless hours in the
temple, fasting and praying. Upon meeting the Christ-Child,
she promptly began praising God and speaking about Jesus
to all who would listen.
Who are your elders in the faith? Whatever their age,
doubtless they live out their faith by waiting on and listening
for the Spirit, praising God regularly and speaking of Jesus
to others.
