SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS FIBA ASIA By: Monica Perez Basketball league, F I B A ASIA, happens every two years. This year’s league was the most important. It happened at SMART Araneta Coliseum on August 1-11, 2013. This time the lucky coach of the Philippine Team was Coach Chot Reyes and like him, he chose the twelve lucky guys that will represent the GILAS PILIPINAS. The twelve lucky guys were Jimmy Alapag, L.A. Tenorio, Jeffrey Chan, Jason William, Gary David, Ranidel De Ocampo, Gabriel Norwood, Marcus Douthit, Larry Funacier, Jun Mar Fajardo, Japeth Aguilar and our very own Sakuragi, Marc Pingris. The countries that fought in the league were Afghanistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Chi- nese Taipei, Korea, Iran, Philippines and many others. Filipinos were so excited. The first game of GILAS was against Afghanistan. GILAS players were so confident because they al- ready beat Afghanistan before the league hap- pened; we won the first game. The second game of GILAS was against Qatar. Though Qatar’s players were so tall, the GILAS play- ers showed no fright when they fought them. We won at the score 80 -70. After that victory, the next game of GILAS was against the Arabians. T h e y wanted to beat them and that was granted. Next game of GILAS was against Japan. It was a great fight because the Sakuragi of Ja- pan and our “Sakuragi” Marc Pingris contrib- uted and both did a great job for their teams. And our Sakuragi succeeded for what he wanted. We won at the score 90-71. Chinese Taipei was the next country that GILAS play- ers wanted to beat. Although Larry Funacier rained his three-point shots, it was not enough to win against Chinese Taipei. We lost at the score 79-84 but GILAS players kept smiling for us. The next country that Filipinos faced was Korea. As we remember, for many times the Kore- ans reigned over us and got the third place of FIBA ASIA. But now Coach Chot Reyes was already prepared for this game. He studied what techniques Koreans used against us. At that game, 2007, FIBA ASIA, we did not join the FIBA WORLD. Now it’s already semi-finals and whoever wins this game will automatically be sent to Spain next year to fight for the FIBA WORLD. At this time, we won. Gabriel Nor- wood did a great job. He shot outside, did a lay-up and made many assists. Gary David let his grenade explode also. But one should be the best player of the game and that was Gabriel Norwood. It was a big celebration for us because the nightmare was erased and we’re one of the representatives for Asia that will join the FIBA WORLD. No matter what happens in the finals, GILAS will go to Spain. After one day of rest, Gilas were ready to fight the Iran. The Iranians were so tall that’s why they were more advantaged in getting the Gold and be- cause of their advantages in height, the Philip- pines lost. The three countries that will repre- sent Asia are Chinese Taipei (Bronze), Philip- pines (Silver), Iran (Gold). And again these are the countries that will be sent to Spain. In the Awarding of Winners, the FIBA ASIA ended. 8 THE G.L.O.W. “Pacman, the most awaited comeback” By: Nova Leah Carbon June 9, 2012, Manny Pacquiao faced his first defeat in 7 years. It was against Timothy Bradley. Another lost followed last Dec. 8, 2012, after Juan Manuel Marquez put him to sleep. That awful and devastating defeat of Manny made every Filipino mourn and thought it was already a retire- ment call for him. But his determination and fighting spirit did not make him surrender that easy. Last November 24, 2013, after the two consecutive disappointing fights, our heart finally over- flowed with joy after he claimed victory against Brandon “Bambam” Rios, a fighter from Mex- ico. Manny wasn't able to put Rios to sleep just like what Juan Manuel Marquez did to him. Rios survived until the 12 th round but Pacman did not fail to make Rios’ face look like a grotesque mask. His victorious fight did not just bring pride, honor and smiles to our country, but also new born faith and hope to our brothers and sisters that were affected by the super typhoon Yolanda. Pac- quiao’s determination and spirit indeed mirror every Filipino’s fighting spirit. He proved that even how many times we fall, we are all ready to stand up with wide smiles in our faces. To- gether with Pacquiao’s victory, let’s set aside all the negativity in our vein. We will rise again! The Next Basketball Legend? Or a Superstar? By: Hedda Trena Dalumpines Another Filipino Pride, Kobe Paras of the La Salle Greenhills Greenies, amazed the Ja- karta crowd as he won the FIBA Under-18 3x3 Dunk Contest. It happened on September 29, 2013 and beat competitors from Spain and the United States. Kobe Paras, the son of PBA legend Benjie Paras, flew over teammate Thirdy Ravena of Ateneo, who was sitting on a motorcycle, for a stunt in the championship round. He won the Crown over De- monte Flannigan of the US and Antonio Morales of Spain. Not just a future basketball legend but I can also say that he can be a future superstar. Kobe has certainly the looks and a charming smile that can make girls go crazy (because I certainly do). His father, Benjie Paras is now an artist, as seen now in a hit rating teleserye in ABS-CBN Maybe Kobe can also be an artist just like his dad. But as per Kobe, he just wants to focus on his studies first and it is his priority for now. By: Hedda Trena Dalumpines The first ever Intramurals of Benthel Asia School of Technology Cordova Campus was held on September 28, 2013 at the BAST- C grounds with the theme, “BAST-C: The Road to Sportsmanship and Camaraderie.” A holy mass opened the said event. Af- ter the mass, the students in each team pre- pared for the grand parade. The three teams which were the Yellow Tigers, the Blue Spartans and the Green Extremes, yelled and cheered at the top of their lungs as they made a round within the school. Their cheers were really ear-splitting! Everybody was peppy. The excitement of the students was really drawn on their faces. After the parade, the flag ceremony fol- lowed. It was conducted by Ms. Erlyn P. Craste. Soon after, the singing of the BAST hymn led by Kyle Nicole Maneja, a 3rd year student was done. Next was the raising of ban- ners, where each team was represented by the muse and escort. The representatives were: Nhelmae Niña Moneva and Spencer Jao for the Tigers, Glendyl Jean Intong and Mikho Dalumpines for the Spartans, and lastly Kyle Nicole Maneja and Jundix Pepino for the Extremes. The pairs ran hastily while the students cheered for their teammates. The Tigers were the first to raise their team’s banner. The Ex- termes came in second, and the Spartans, third. Lighting of the Symbolic Torch Any Intramurals wouldn't be complete without the lighting of torch. It symbolizes that the Intramurals has already started. Spencer Jao, a Grade 8 student was the one given the honor of lighting the torch. He made an im- pressive and zippy run, which he really prac- ticed everyday before the event. All the students also recited the oath of sportsmanship. It was led by Jhunru Seldura, my fellow 4th year student. Our principal, Dr. Erlinda V. Lachica, gave out her welcome address and announced cheerfully the Intramurals’ formal opening. A Showcase of Talent The students exhibited their talent in dance and choreography during the Field Dem- onstration. The Preschoolers, together with the Grade 1 and 2 pupils were so cute in their pompoms. They were followed by the blue team with their crafty fans. Their presentation was a mixture of modern and Hawaiian music. Next was the yellow team. They had pompoms as props too. What made their num- ber special was their superb yell as they made their entrance. They cheered in unison. Last but not the least, the team where I belonged, the green team, used decorated gloves as props. It was a great presentation too. Simple, yet perfectly executed. This time, the yellow team bagged the first place in the field demonstration. The teachers, visitors and the parents were so proud seeing the students dance with glee and confidence. Benthelians in Cordova are naturally born dancers. That’s a fact! A Game of Throws and Other Fun-Filled Activities As a “warm-up” for the main event which is the sports competition, the students played some light games. The first game was dubbed “The Voice.” It was an exciting game, where team members had to find each and eve- ryone by making animal sounds, after being scattered around in the vast school grounds. Both elementary and high school learners en- joyed the game. Another game called “Planting Rice,” which was prepares for the preschoolers, to- gether with the Grade 1 and 2 learners, made everyone energized. The parents and teachers coached and cheered the kids. A few other games such as Fan the Fish, Bird’s Eye, Carry Me On, Lemon Relay and Paint Me a Picture were played and made everyone hyped up. But among these, it was Bird’s Eye that took a long time to finish. It was a difficult, yet amusing challenge that required teamwork and a lot of patience. The goal of the game was to hold a ping pong ball in the center where a cir- cle connects the threads that hang from each of the member’s teeth. (It was later changed to one hand). It was the Spartans who were able to pull this game through. For one to be mentally fit, one should be physically fit first. That’s why the students participated in different sports which was the “highlight” of the event. The events were vol- leyball, table tennis, as well as chess, damath, and scrabble. The Big Winners The Yellow Tigers took away the championship award for the school’s first Intramurals. The Blue Spartans and Green Ex- tremes got the second and third place, respec- tively. Special awards were given to promis- ing students, as well. Bobbie Joel Cuenca, a Grade 4 learner and Jorres May Tirol form the third year were proclaimed Performers of the Year. The Most Valuable Players awards went to Jan Austin Rafael Paquig, also a Grade 4 learner and Hayato Caparos from Grade 8. It had been a memorable Intramurals. Everyone’s looking forward to the next one. Let’s see who wins the second championship then! PORK BARREL: TIME TO PUT AN END! By: Jhunru Seldura

Have you ever wondered how much money does the government get annu-ally from the taxes that the people work for? And where would these taxes end up? Let me guess… in the pockets of the pigs! Ghost projects, questionable use of government funds, and the continuous corruption. Well, who is new to the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) scam after it made a big name in our country? The scam involving several legisla-tors, fake NGO‘s and Mrs. Janet Lim Napoles with millions of money. The PDAF scam which is commonly known as the pork barrel scam was first exposed by a known newspaper, the Philippine Daily Inquirer, on July 12, 2013 with its six part exposé to the said scam. PDAF is a lump sum discretionary fund granted to each member of Congress for spending priority development pro-jects. Each member of the House of Representatives has an annual allocation of ₱70 million while each senator has an annual allocation of ₱200 million. It was esti-mated that about ₱10 billion of this fund has been defrauded from the government being diverted to Mrs. Janet Lim Napoles and involved officials. Where are these funds at times we need it the most? People work hard just to earn a living and to pay those taxes while these abusive officials waste billions of money for their lives' content and made it already as a standard of living. They must be punished for stealing those hard earned money that the people worked for. Changing the system won’t make everything better, as long as the sys-tem exists, corruption stays. It is just like cutting the grass without pulling the roots. It will still grow and might be harder to pull the time you realize what makes every-thing worst. We should not waste time and put the system to an end before it will become worst. Should we wait for them to steal bigger money before doing an ac-tion against corruption? This is not just a fight against abusive legislators but a fight against corrup-tion and for our right as a people in this country! When can we say that the Philippines is finally “free,“ free from the curse of corruption?!

Home By: Glendyl Jean Intong

The realm of happy being, Love and care do persist, The only place of living,

Where you find reasons to exist.

The warm feelings you give, In others I can’t achieve, The place of everything,

Loving is nothing.

If you wish to be belong Home is what you’ve wished for so long

Where there is comfort and love, And sanctuary of end and angered dove.

Beneath thy throbbing primitive heart, There lives an endless growing love; This stays astounding like a work of art, And shining like the sun above Yet these feelings are almost the same As the love you always give to her, For she possessed fortune and fame, That me, myself can’t have further I know you’re meant for her only, No matter what I do or say, But I know I’ll forget you wholly, In any possible way, This love won’t last long, For with her, you truly belong.

Naiilang o Nahihiya?

Touchstone of Friendship By: Kyle Nicole Maneja

Bound to stay close together, For a promise of forever Each day it gets tighter, But how did it go worst than ever? This friendship I thought would last, Ended with a baneful blast, And swiftly our memories were cast, That shatters us all so fast. Ruined by ego and pride, All of us were a complete deride. Someone had already cried, Without a doubt, this is too much to hide. I know we’ll mend this someday, When all the hatred have washed away. For our friendship will prevail and stay, To bring it all back again, come what may!

“Duyan” By: Nova Leah Carbon

Kalokohan! Wala diba?

Sabi nga ng paboritong kong awtor, "THIS IS THE REAL WORLD, NOT A FAIRY TALE NOT EVEN A NOVEL. THE BITTERLY AND DEPRESSING SORDID LITTLE DETAILS ARE LEFT IN THE STO-RIES."

Forgiveness By: Nova Leah Carbon We all make mistakes. One of those mistakes is when we tend to remember the undesirable actions of oth-ers which made us feel bad and forget the desirable actions and good things that certain persons made. That's how unfathomable people are. People often exchange one bad thing to a million good things, one mistake to a million memories, one offensive sen-tence to a million good times, one bad deed to a mil-lion of good deeds and one simple misunderstanding to a strongly-tied bond. Every individual commits mistakes. So when we know how to commit mistakes, we should also know how to seek for forgiveness and when we learn how to seek for forgiveness, we can learn to forgive oth-ers. Forgiveness helps us feel light and get rid of hard feelings that occupy our hearts and minds that take away our peace of mind. Forgiveness is a way to self- fulfillment. People who can easily forgive others are more satisfied inside than those who keep grudges against others and develop feelings of enmity and anguish.

But even how difficult it is to, there's still a light that occupies a little space in your heart in doing so. It is true that the more we easily forgive others the less we shall suffocate ourselves into deeper pain. We need to feed into our system that we should learn to let go of the grudges and we should not let our ego and pride eat us up and change our soft hearts into a heart of stone. The ability to for-give gives us a sense of freedom and make us suf-fer less and feel lesser misery and pain. Try to for-give others and you'll feel weight fell off your shoulders. Remember, that in the Lord's prayer, the word LOVE was not mentioned. Instead the word "FORGIVE" was used. Perhaps, it is because "FORGIVENESS" is the highest form of loving.

Let God heal our hearts from past wounds, insults, pains, pride and grudges. Throw away excess bag-gages. We should always bear in mind, that is eas-ier to reach his kingdom if we travel light. FOR-GIVE and FORGET!

Linog sa Visayas By: Nova Leah Carbon

Ug di moabot ang trahedya nganong dili man kita musampit kaniya? Mapait nga kasinatian nga nag-agni kanato nga musampit pagbalik sa Ginoo. Lisud man angkunon apan mao kini ang kamatuoran.

He must be remembered… (The 30th year of unsolved murder) By: Nova Leah Carbon

“Filipinos are worth dying for.” A line from Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. which deeply struck the hearts of every Filipino. August 21, 2013 marked the 30th anniversary of Senator Aquino’s return to the Philippines and his mar-tyrdom.

It has become fashionable among certain members of the population espe-cially the younger generation to easily forget heroism and legacy. Let me freshen up your minds and thoughts with what Ninoy did for our country. Benigno Ninoy Aquino Jr. otherwise known as Ninoy was the closest po-litical rival of President Marcos. He was a politician from Tarlac who be-came very popular because he was able to serve as mayor and senator at a young age. After the declaration of Martial Law, President Marcos ordered Ninoy’s imprisonment and was sentenced to death for subversion. But be-cause of intense pressure from the U.S. , President Marcos was forced to free Ninoy and allow him to go the U.S. for his medications. August 21, 1983 came, 3 years after his exile in U.S., he bravely returned here in the Philippines despite the fact that anywhere, anytime he can be killed. That same day, the nation was covered with immense sadness after Sen. Ninoy was shot to death at Manila International Airport (now NAIA).

It was said that the gunman was Rolando Galman. Imelda Marcos and Fa-bian Ver, who was the Chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines during Marcos’ time were both accused of Ninoy’s assassination. The Agrava Commission summoned Imelda, but she denied the accusation. The assassination of Senator Ninoy brought different reactions to the masses. There were those who fumed with anger, some had lost their spirit, others were rendered hopeless, but many were emboldened to organize a group against the Marcos regime. Nevertheless, Ninoy’s death became the eye-opener of our blinded fellow-men. It opened the heart and minds of the people to fight for their freedom and rights. It made the various sectors of the society to finally stand their ground to resist and condemn the abusive and anti-democratic regime of President Marcos. And after more than 20 years of suffering, Filipinos finally restored the democracy. Indeed Ninoy’s death made a huge part in the restoration of peace and democracy. His heroism, legacy, words, boldness and martyr-dom will surely remain in our hearts. But despite those, did we ever think of thanking him? Did we ever think that his death is unjustified until now? I don’t think so. When can we obtain the truth? Are we going to wait for another 30 years or more before the justice will prevail? Give justice for Ninoy!

No to Bullying! By: Kyle Nicole Maneja

Bullying refers to any severe or repeated use by one or more students of a written, verbal or electronic expres-sion, physical and gesture or any combination thereof, directed at another student that has the effect of actu-ally causing or placing the latter in reasonable fear of physical or emotional harm. There are a lot of students here in the Philippines and as well as in the whole world who were bullied in their schools in various ways. The number of bullying cases increased greatly so our government decided to act their part and implemented “Anti-Bullying Act of 2012” which brought a huge help for them. This also paves the way for the unfortunate students to stand for their rights as a victim of the brutish act. In easier sense, bullying is about hurting and intimidat-ing others who is weaker than himself or herself to gain respect. For some other reason, they want to look cool and tough because the bullies know that with this, no one can hurt them like the way they hurt others. Bullies are sometimes conceited and introvert who can hurt you physically, verbally and emotionally. On the other side, bullies just need proper guidance and under-standing. We don’t have to judge them completely be-

cause, who knows? They might be suffering from a serious problem that causes them to do such wrong doings. Browbeating is unavoidable, but we can do something to stop and overcome it. The first thing that you should do is to tell someone who you can trust about you, be-ing bullied. It is very important that you express your feelings so that it will lessen your baggage. You can talk to your friend, teacher or most especially your par-ents about your problem. Maybe they can give you some advices and can make a quick action regarding your problem. Second, be brave enough to face the bullies and talk to them. Tell them that what they are doing is bad and tell them on what you feel about being bullied by them. Ask them if they have problem with you and what’s their purpose in bullying you. Maybe in God’s time, you can be friends. Lastly, be yourself always because no matter what you do people will al-ways judge you. Just be yourself and everything will just follow.

Note to self that you won’t get something good in bul-lying. So if I were you, stand up and say: NO TO BULLYING!

Zamboanga Crisis By: Jhunru Seldura

While the pork barrel scam was in heat, Zamboanga was literally on fire. A war broke out in Zamboanga several weeks after the scam became a public interest and while it was currently under investigation. A Senator has been accused of funding the rebels and being the man behind the attack to divert the attention of the people from the scam. The inci-dent erupted on September 9, 2013, after an armed faction of Moro Na-tional Liberation Front (MNLF) that was led by Ustadz Habier Malik marched towards the Zamboanga city hall and tried to raise the flag of the Bangsamoro Republic. This beckons the Philippine forces to use force against these rebels who brought and started the war. It lasted for 2 weeks and 6 days which ended on September 29, 2013 leaving the city's economic activity cripple and some of its infrastructures totally destructed, the final report states that 183 rebels, 25 from the government forces and 12 civilians were found dead, 184 from the government forces and 70 civilians were wounded and 292 rebels were cap-tured.

World Teachers’ Day By: Kyle Nicole Maneja Once every year, we celebrate World Teachers’ Day in honor of our mighty teachers. It is the day intended to appreciate and thank our beloved teachers for their efforts and hardships just to teach and discipline us. Usually, the students will give flowers, messages, foods, gifts and other stuff to their teachers. But here in BAST-C, the students are enigmatically awesome for making a twist in celebrating Teachers' Day. Our way of express-ing gratitude and appreciations to our educators are peculiar but aston-ishing. The students planned something that the teachers wouldn't surely forget. The plan was plainly simple. And to sum it all up in one word, it would be "SWITCH." The celebration started at the front of Administration Building, for the messages and letters of the students to their advisers and sub-ject teachers. The learners even sang a song entitled "Glowing Inside."

After the heartfelt activity, the "SWITCH" event is next in line. The library turned into a classroom was the next location. There were some chairs for the teachers that were arranged like a typical classroom setting. The teachers were the students for that day and a fourth year student (Ryna Lumactud) became their teacher. They switched places and that was the main event or idea of the World Teach-ers' Day celebration here in BAST-C for this year.

It was fun because the teachers were asked with certain ques-tions and they also have a game called "Estudyante Ko Yan" in which the teachers will identify who is the student being described. The edu-cators also showed their talents, and laughter can be heard all over the place.

All was really happy because of the tremendous jokes and visi-tors who will not be named also came. At least, the students enjoyed it and as well as the teachers. When the class was dismissed, the games followed. The teach-ers were divided into two groups then some students joined them. First group were Ms. Debbie, Ms. Erl and Sir Glenn. The second group con-sisted of Ms. Blanche, Ms. Ruby and Ms. Gen. They played different games namely, Sack Race, Carry Me On, Pass the Egg, Marshmallow Eating and Killer Karaoke. In the first game, which was Sack Race, the group of Ms. Blanche won. The sec-ond group won several games but the first group was the winner of the Marshmallow Eating Game. Last game was Killer Karaoke, in which the teach-ers sang a song while eating polvo-ron or nuts. (They had to choose a plate). It was a hard game because you can really see how the teachers are striving hard just to finish the song. Af-ter all the games, it's Karaoke time! All were welcome to sing and that's how the celebration ended.

All in all, it was entertaining and unforgettable. This celebra-tion truly shows how important teachers are in our country. Just like what they say, “A teacher is like a candle - it consumes itself to light the way for others.”

Buwan ng Wika By: Mikho Dalumpines

Kids in a Kitchen? Why not? By: Idylle Almendras

Who says that kids couldn’t be in a kitchen? BAST-C will defi-nitely prove you wrong. This year, the school launched many clubs including the Cooking Club which is handled by Ms. Erlyn Craste. The learners from Grades 1-5 experi-ence cooking at its best.

Every Friday, there is an allotted time for the learners to at-tend their own clubs. The cooking

club members cooked or made varieties of pastries and sweets.

The time when I visited and observed their club, they made polvoron. For those who are interested on their recipe, just check it out.

As I observed them, I can really see the enjoyment and deter-mination on their faces. Even though their polvorons are not that per-fect in shape, the important thing is that they really finished it. But on the other side, I can say that it really tasted good and it was made by the cutest cooks in town. Thumbs up for you kiddos!

After their activity, I interviewed some of them. And these are some their answers.

Q: Do you find cooking interesting? Why?

A: Yes, so that in future I will be-come a great chef so that I can help my family.

Q: When someone says “cooking”, what comes first in your mind?

A: The food *Giggles*

Q:What food do you know how to cook?

A: Scrambled egg

Q: Do you think cooking is easy? Why?

A: Yes, because I keep following the instructions.

With proper guidance, kids can do things adults never dreamed or imagined they could.

SCHOOL ACTIVITIESSCHOOL ACTIVITIESSCHOOL ACTIVITIES 4 THE G.L.O.W.

Science Science is very important in our world because everywhere we look; everything that we do is always connected with Science. The technologies that we’re enjoying today are all because of the scientists and inventors who showed love and great interest in Science. So, mainly Science is the root of all innovations. Science makes our everyday lives a lot easier than before. Science strengthens communication, upGrades the community and makes things more convenient to humans. But then, a lot of people abused the power of Science and Technol-ogy. Despite of all the negativities, the positive result is enough to celebrate. Benthelians really did value the importance of science. We celebrated the “Science Week” with glee and a bountiful energy. The first thing that we did was the quiz bole. There were five groups with four members; each member was a representative for each level. The learners are equipped with knowledge to battle and see who the best group is. The group of Charie won the struggle of overly challenging questions and competitors. After that, the learners are grouped into 5. This is not a challenge of immense wit but also with physical agony. “The amaz-ing grace” was strategically prepared by Ms. Rose, Jhunru, Janril, Spencer and me. We prepared everything according to our plans. We’ve set some questions and obstacles to make the race more challenging.

After a few minutes, the race started with animal sounds. Blindfolded players should make the sound of the selected animal on the group. After that, they hurriedly ran to station 1. The first challenge is to tie themselves up and must make a turn to accomplish. Then they hurried to station 2. A pair should tie them-selves w/ a dress. They raced towards the 3rd station. They have to dip their face in a bowl of flour, the objec-tive was to get the coin. The next challenge was to find the two missing organizers, me and Janril. We hid to the most uncommon place in our school. Each team had a hard time to find us. And finally we’ve been caught. Now, the last and final task was to answer the riddle which serves as a clue to the destination of the trophy. The group of my Sister, Hedda won and got plenty of prizes. Everyone had their fun time during the science week.

Ingredients: Milk– 1 1/2 cups Flour-- 2 cups Sugar– 1 cup Melted Butter– 3/4 cup Procedure: 1. Toast the flour until golden

brown— 15 mins 2. Remove from heat then let it cool. 3. Melt a butter. Set aside 4. Combine powdered milk, sugar &

the toasted flour. 5. Add the melted butter & mix well. 6. And you’re ready packing

“BAST-C: We CARE, We LOVE, We SHARE”y:

Hedda Trena Dalumpines

The small things that you do can make great impact to others. It’s not all about how small or big you can contrib-ute to help others who are in need, it’s all about helping them whole-heartedly.

Even a peso coin given with all hearts is much more than those millions

who are given just to have those thought that they helped even though they don’t want to or they just did that for fame. Some of the learners here in BAST-C gathered some goods and clothes to be given to the victims of Super typhoon “Haiyan” or should we say “Bagyong Yolanda”.

We saw on television how the awful typhoon devastated all the houses in Tacloban and some other parts in the Philippines specifically here in the Visayas. The typhoon didn’t just destroy the homes of the

Filipinos but also their lives. Many Filipinos died and some were criti-cally injured.

As we saw those totally heartbreaking news, we then decided to be volunteers. We went to Mactan Airbase as early as 8:00 in the morning bringing with us our small yet “full of love” donations. We also helped in repacking goods and clothes.

We endured the painful heat of the sun, thinking that the pain we felt was just little compared to those what they experienced in Ta-cloban. It really was a tiring day for us but still we were happy that in our own simple way, we helped. Tulong na, Tabang na, Tayo na!

Strange Neighbors By: Jhunru Seldura

Living in a world with full of mysteries yet to be solved seems in-teresting, but discovering a rogue planet and a binary star system is much more interesting than we think. An international team of Astronomers has spotted an unusual sight-ing that amazed not just the common people but also the astrono-mers. PSO J318.5-22, the name given to our strange neighbor, is flying freely without a star to orbit unlike most planets. It is 6 times more massive than Jupiter and is also considered as a gas-giant planet. It is just 80 light-years away from Earth drifting freely. It leaves the astronomers uncertain how this planet moves freely in space without a star to host, but what made this fascinating is that astronomers can have a better look on its surface to study it further. PSO J318.5-22 belongs to a collection of young stars called Beta Pictoris, the closest youthful group of stars to the Earth, that was formed 12million years ago. Other possible known rogue planets are: S Ori 52, UGPS J072227.51-054031.2, Cha 110913-773444 and CFBDSIR 2149-0403. It may not be the first of its kind but I‘m sure that it is not also the last. If you are amazed by PSO J318.5-22 because it is floating freely in space without a star to host, Kepler-47 will double the fun. Using the NASA‘s Kepler Space Telescope, astronomers have dis-covered our first binary star 2-planet system, Kepler-47. Kepler-47 has two suns orbiting each other with two planets orbiting around them. Binary stars were believed to only have one planet and more was quite impossible but the discovery of Kepler-47 challenged the understanding of every astronomers. It only proves that binary or multiple star systems may also support multiple planets.

Earth-Like Planets By: Jhunru Seldura

“Are we alone?” This is the question asked by every curious mind that erupted countless arguments from the past is yet to be unfolded. It leads the astronomers searching and hunting for Earth‘s possible twin that can support life. Billions of billion earth-like planets is estimated to have existed in the universe that may be capable to support life. International astronomers have gathered to hunt for Earth‘s possible twin for a certain purpose: to search for habitable planets. Habitable planets are planets with electromagnetic shields and perfect life sustain-ing orbit around the sun, not too far and not too close. The search for Earth-like planets has been successful with the help of NASA‘s Kepler Mission. The nearest Earth-like planet is be-lieved to be just 12 light years away from our very own Earth. Climate change, global warming and the fear of Armageddon has been invading our mind since the start of famous predictions. With our Earth slowly reaching its apocalypse, it is not new to us to hear space missions to hunt for habitable planets.

“Words fail me.” It’s an admission we all have to make from time to time. Lapses in language can plague even the most skilled speaker/writer. But they can be overcome with the help of this activity. Give it a try!
