What is it?

• Challenge 2050 sets out to provide a vision of the future of the

European rail system, as it could be by 2050 and as seen through

the eyes of the sector’s leaders.

• It is intended to encourage delivery of a business-led vision for the

sector as a whole, describe how rail will meet the challenges that

other modes may create and to describe the role rail should play in

the development of Europe as a global region.

• It is inevitable that it will be able to be used as an influential vehicle

for institutional bodies on the European stage as well as a means of

rail itself begin able to influence other bodies such as the financial

and banking sector as to why investment in rail is important.

To whom is it intended?

• It is principally destined as a stakeholder vision of the future of the

sector, as seen by the sector including not only the rail operating

community but also the suppliers.

• Naturally it would make sense to ensure that opinion-formers and

institutions are also made aware of the document. This would apply

equally to financial institutions as well as political ones and be just

as relevant at national as well as European levels.

The vision and goals in Challenge 2050 are all underpinned by the

steps taken in the core rail system fields of policy (what needs to be

done), technology (developing the tools to enable it to be done) and

providing services (what the user sees and receives when a

customer of rail).

A proposal for an ambitious large-scale, industrially-driven and multiannual research

programme that aims at helping EU rail industry to retain world leadership

A public-private Joint Undertaking under Horizon 2020

Estimated budget between 800 million and 1 billion Euros over a six to seven year

period

Official proposal submitted to the European Commission in July 2012 & Addendum sent

in January 2013

Consortium ready to establish the Joint Undertaking and start R&I operations as soon as

2014! Need to convince the European Commission to put money aside in Horizon 2020

and launch without delay the work to set up the Joint Undertaking
