THE FIVE PhB LAWS
Law 1: “P” Primary Beneficiary – I am the main and first beneficiary of everything I think, do, and say.
When I sow positivity, I harvest growth and good health. When I sow negativity, I harvest the undesirable effects of that thinking and behavior, which may include a lack of good health.
Law 2: “R” Relationship – The most important relationship I have is the one I have with myself.
This relationship is created by the manner in which I relate or talk to myself. It forms the basis for all other relationships and has a profound influence on my health, success, happiness, and capacity to lead.

Reducing Capacity Congested Brain Theory: Lots of irrelevancy in our mind space Misuse of the Imagination Miscommunicating with the Brain/Physiology

3
Law 3: “O” Outcomes – Every choice has physiological outcomes. Every choice I make has physiological outcomes: either health-
producing or disease-producing. Every choice has consequences.
Law 4: “H” Help – I cannot help another without
helping myself Accordingly, I cannot possibly harm another without harming
myself. I will always experience what I desire for others.
Law 5: “B” Body – Body follows mind.
Everything I think, do, and say causes a physiological response within myself. I do things primarily for this response within myself, not for the response it has in others.

Don’t Worry Be Healthy:
Johns Hopkins researchers say study
shows that a general sense of well
being: feeling cheerful , relaxed,
energetic and satisfied with life reduces
the chance of a heart attack.

Culture Stress Freeing Abilities
The ability to admit you might be wrong The ability to admit that you do not know The ability to say ‘no’ when appropriate
The ability to be real (imperfect) The ability to repeat back what you just heard (listen)

Much of the conflict in our lives can
be explained by one simple but unhappy fact: we don’t really listen
to each other.

Sympathetic nervous system: Fight, Flight, or Freeze response
Parasympathetic nervous system: Calming, Restful, Relaxing, (Rejuvenation) Response
Activation of Two Powerful Reflexes
11
If the stress response is locked on the “on” position this creates a disease producing chemistry = aging.
Activation of parasympathetic reflex creates a health producing chemistry = reversal of biological age; graceful aging.
Two Powerful Reflexes

The Immune System - Our Defense System
Arterial System - Our Transportation System
Two Most Important Systems
Influencing Disease and Aging
13
Norepinephrine remains elevated - artery damage.
Elevated levels of cortisol and adrenaline weakens the immune system, creating loss of bone mass and causing memory loss.
Incessant stimulation also causes hypertension and high blood pressure.
Chronic Activation Can Cause Damage

1. ARE YOU PERFORMING YOUR MAGIC?
Mind-Body-Health Risk
Research from the Massachusetts Department of Health in the New England Journal of Medicine, shows that job dissatisfaction and a low score on the self-happiness rating are the two leading contributors to heart attacks.
Health Advantage Find a way to enjoy your work or change the work you do. Rewarding, satisfying work that accesses your strengths and creativity is essential to cardiovascular health.

2. FROM “HERE I AM” TO “THERE YOU ARE”
Mind-Body-Health Risk
• Performing in ordinary ways causes boredom, anxiety, and frustration.
• Boredom taxes the heart and overall mental health.
• Anxiety depresses the function of natural killer cells that fight infection.
• Also, lack of fulfillment results in a lack of happiness, which is essential for overall good health.
25
2. FROM “HERE I AM” TO “THERE YOU ARE”
• Institute for the Advancement of Health: In 1988, this institute coined the terms “Helper’s High,” to describe the euphoria, increased energy, and general feel-good sensation during the act of serving, and “Helper’s Calm” for the calmness felt immediately following the act. The experience releases endorphins, the body’s neurotransmitters responsible for pain killing and mood altering.
• Arizona State University: Psychologist Robert Cialdini found that frequent givers experienced a euphoria (“Helper’s High”) which lowered stress hormones, improved cardiovascular health and strengthened the immune system.
• University of Michigan: Research of 2700 people over a ten-year period found that, more than any other activity, doing volunteer work increased life expectancy.

Focusing on Others
26
• University of Michigan: Psychologist Stephanie Brown found that, when we give a lot, help others, or do good to others, we release chemicals in the brain and body which increase life expectancy.
• Emory University: Brain scientists have discovered that cooperating with or serving others activated an area of the brain rich in dopamine, the chemical that produces a pleasurable sensation (helper’s high).
• Institute for The Management of Health: Helping others offered long-term health benefits, including relief from back pain and headaches, lowered blood pressure and cholesterol, and curbed overeating, alcohol consumption, and drug abuse.

3. ARE YOU GOING OUT OF YOUR MIND?
Learned helplessness or victim mentality creates a feeling of being out of control and increases stress levels markedly. Prolonged feelings of helplessness make the body secrete excessive levels of the hormone cortisol, which interferes with the immune system’s ability to fight off infections and some forms of cancer. It can also deplete the brain’s supply of dopamine, a chemical that helps fight depression.
Being flexible in the face of change protects us from the stress, strain, and aging caused by holding onto the idea of how things should be when that reality is not manifesting.

on MT (TM) and they have
been published in the
world’s most reputable
scientific journals.
A meta-analysis, the preferred scientific procedure for drawing definitive conclusions
from large bodies of research, found Transcendental Meditation produced a
significant increase in basal skin resistance compared to eyes-closed rest, indicating
profound relaxation. Deep rest and relaxation were also indicated by greater
decreases in respiration rates and plasma lactate levels compared to ordinary rest.
These physiological changes occur spontaneously as the mind effortlessly settles to
the state of restful alertness, pure consciousness. Physiological differences between
Transcendental Meditation and rest, American Psychologist 42:879-881, 1987.
Physiological Indicators of Deep Rest
Increased Creativity
This study used the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking to measure figural
and verbal creativity in a control group and in a group that subsequently
learned the Transcendental Meditation technique. On the posttest 5 months
later, the Transcendental Meditation group scored significantly higher on
figural originality and flexibility and on verbal fluency.
Development of Intelligence
Students at Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa, who
regularly practiced Transcendental Meditation, increased significantly in
intelligence over a 2-year period, compared to control subjects from another
Iowa university. This finding corroborates the results of two other studies
showing increased IQ in Maharishi International University students.
Increased self-actualization through
Transcendental Meditation in contrast
to other procedures as demonstrated
by meta-analysis
Statistical review of 42 independent research
results: TM program was found to be four times
as effective as other meditation and relaxation
procedures in increasing self-actualization.
Increased Self-Actualization
• Ability to live in the present
• Increased inner-directedness
• Independence and self-supportiveness
• Holding values of self-actualizing people
• Increased flexibility
• Increased spontaneity
Increased Self-Actualization
• Increased self-regard
• Increased self-acceptance
• See man as essentially good
• Increased synergy
• Increased acceptance of feelings
• Increased capacity for warm,
interpersonal relationships

ABOUTISM
I/ we will talk about you not to you.
Fritz Perls (Psychiatrist)
It’s better to talk
to each other rather than about each other.
41
1. “Is what you’re about to say beneficial to me in any way?”
2. “Did you talk to ______ about this?”
3. “Can I go and get ______, and we can have a three-way conversation about this?”
4. “How can we help ______?”

4. SEE YOURSELF ON BROADWAY
• The feeling that it is impossible to improve the situation you are faced with or that it is impossible to feel better about yourself depletes the chemical catecholamine, which suppresses the immune system.
• Not exercising the mind is like not exercising the body. You must warm up your mind like a baseball pitcher warms up his arm, or a musician warms up her instrument before a performance. Mental acuity is not sharp without physical and mental exercise.
• A high beta state (stress) causes us to go out of the mind, and blood to flow away from cortical centers and to the extremities. For example, aggressive (fight), passive (flight), and passive- aggressive (fight and flight).

43
4. SEE YOURSELF ON BROADWAY
• Mental rehearsal and imaging exercises can fire the same brain cells that are actually involved in that activity – they strengthen connections in the brain circuitry and allow for stretching of the imagination.
• Choosing alpha and theta states (relaxed) positions one for greater creativity. Assertiveness is one of those states.
• Having the understanding that you can learn anything you need to know to solve any problem you are faced with keeps the nervous system calm and the parasympathetic system activated. It prevents the stress response which causes the lower brain centers to interfere with the higher brain functions responsible for problem solving and creativity.
Health Advantage

• The people you meet
• The places you go
• The risks you take
• The self-development you undertake

5. DO YOU STAND UP FOR
WHAT YOU VALUE THE MOST?
• Loving oneself is fundamental to good health.
• If we compromise what we consider to be our values, we end up not liking ourselves.
• Our immune system is weakened when we act counter to our deeper values and conscience. (Childre and Cryer - From Chaos to Coherence, 1999)
• The risk of low self-esteem is depression of the immune system and build-up of plaque in the arteries.
Mind-Body-Health Risk
Identifying your values and not compromising them brings unstoppable self-esteem. This is a solid foundation--the core criterion--for good mental and physical health.

6. IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHERE YOU ARE
GOING, MORE SPEED WON’T HELP
• Cynicism occurs when mission and a sense of purpose are missing. We become cynical from disillusionment and disappointment. This triggers anxiety, loss of self-esteem, and depression, which depletes the chemical catecholamine, which in turn suppresses the immune system.
• When frustration, anxiety or inner turmoil cause incoherence in the rhythmic and electrical output of the heart it diminishes neurological efficiency. (Childre and Cryer - From Chaos to Coherence, 1999)

6. IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHERE YOU ARE
GOING, MORE SPEED WON’T HELP
• Norman Cousins wrote that “Hope, purpose and determination are not merely mental states. They have electrochemical connections that play a large part in the workings of the immune system.”
• Mission and purpose inspire.
• Inspiration brings a sense of well-being, producing endorphins that help our self-healing mechanisms, and strengthen the immune system.
Health Advantage

THE FUTURE IS COMING
But only YOU can decide
where it’s going
52
7. ARE YOU KEEPING YOUR MIND/BODY
BATTERY CHARGED?
• Lack of proper quantity and quality sleep results in lack of energy, bad moods, poor general health, trouble handling stress, problems with memory, and impaired work performance.
• In these high-stress times, not utilizing a formal stress-management technology can result in job worry and tension, relationship problems, a weakened immune system, illness, and missed work days.
