LETTER FROM THE PASTOR

“When you come to the fork in the road, take it.” I think Yogi Berra the professional baseball player and manager is credited with this gem of wisdom. It made sense to Walton my rancher-friend and church member in Ruidoso, New Mexico who also stood in as second father to me. We used to drive into the vast New Mexico mountainous regions around Ruidoso. Miles and miles of roads in the sage desert and pinon forests beckoned our exploring tendencies. We usually searched for places that others hadn’t frequented—easier in the first years—not so much in latter years as population increased and more four wheeling enthusiasts drove the lands. We prided ourselves on going places that many people dared not—the most inaccessible, rocky, rut-coursed pathways. And we were rewarded with beautiful landscapes and vistas with more than a fair share of wild game. But we had to take the fork in the road when we got there. And we discovered new places and even discovered new ways home. There is a tendency to practice what works. I listened to the conversations with retired ministers and inevitably the

question comes: “How do you know what works?” “What did you do that made you successful?” In other words, tell us what it will take to make this ministry successful. Well, not so sure that the old ways will work. Too many forks in the road today with changing attitudes about church and religion. And so, the forks look more appealing if not demanding. “You’ve got to be very careful if you don’t know where you’re going because you might not get there.” Makes sense to me. Makes sense to a lot of people in the church right now as we face the same rutted roads that have held us on path for years. And those paths worked a destination for us and the church for a

time that brought members, mission and ministry. But now we need to know where else to go...or we might not get there. “The future ain’t what it used to be.” No, it’s not, but it ain’t a future that is simply in our own hands. Our Exodus wanderings from the flesh pots of convention and familiarity lead to other lands promised to faithful people who join a faithful God. One of the dangers to a “future that ain’t what it used to be” is that a negative prediction of that future is faithless. Yogi Berra, homespun philosopher, part-time theologian in a baseball hat, put some words to the faithful journey of God’s people, even though he might not have known it. “If you don’t know where you are going then you might wind up somewhere else.” And who’s to say that the somewhere else might be where God is waiting...and we didn’t know it, so the journey is the work and the pleasure and the excitement because we came to a fork in the road and we took it. Your pastor,

PRESCHOOL Here it is November already and the Preschool is in full swing. We will begin working on centerpieces for the "Giving Thanks" dinner. The children have been doing this for the last few years and they really enjoy this craft project! Our next big event is the Soup & Bread Feast on Wednesday, November 14th. The children and their families will fill McAulay Hall to break bread together, watch a slideshow featuring the children and reflect on things to be grateful for. Cooler weather means no more water play days. This month every Thursday will be pajama day. The children and teachers will all wear their PJ's on Thursdays! At this writing we have plans to visit our senior center friends and take them candy. The children will wear their costumes on this field trip as they pass out candy. This is one of our favorite trips. The children love to visit the senior center and our senior friends love to have the children visit. We are thankful for our volunteer handyman, Mr. Peter Stewart who is a blessing to the school and we are grateful. He continues to keep all things in good repair. Please continue to pray for the school, the children and the teaching team. Wish list: small cups, paper plates, fish crackers, napkins, and your old towels when you purchase new ones.

"Be worrisome about nothing; but in every thing by prayer & supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds." ~ Philippians 4:6-7

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

UNDERSTANDING ANXIOUS TIMES Sundays, November 4-18 • 11:20 am • Chapel

What can we learn from other disciplines about anxiety in the society and the church? How have and do we respond to anxiety in our own midst? Let’s take a look…briefly at informative resources…discuss how this information could be applied in our own situations in the church. Pastor Winston leads the discussion.

JUSTIN MARSH, DIRECTOR OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

PRESBY Presby is happily preparing for the holidays! This coming weekend she is going to be helping carve pumpkins with the Stanley's and will most likely want her pumpkin with a cat

face on it. She is also planning to go trick or treating for cat treats on Halloween and hoping to come and visit everyone at the Fall Festival (if she will wear her cat harness, that is!)

MISSION NEWS We have recently made small New Testaments available free of charge to people picking up food bags. These Gideon Bibles come in English and Spanish editions and have been provided by Walt Khazoyan. Temple Beth Shalom recently had a huge food drive and donated about eighty food bags to FPCO. What a wonderful gift! We will begin to hand out these bags for the next several weeks. Our next Food Bag Sunday will be announced. Stay tuned. We hope you are using and enjoying the 30 Days of Mission devotional booklets. The stories are inspiring and each one is a witness to God's work though his people here in Los Ranchos Presbytery. Keep reading, keep praying.

We have been learning in the past few weeks about the many situations that can be helped by our Peacemaking offering. We highlighted the problems and sad results of bullying, human trafficking and lack of civility. If you were touched by any of these situations but failed to contribute, it is not too late to do so. Simply designate Peacemaking on your check or envelope. The current total collected is $511. Many thanks from the Mission Committee.

HEALTH MINISTRY

This month is Thanksgiving, a time when many of us overeat. Thus, it is not surprising that November is National Diabetes month. Type 2 Diabetes (also called age onset) is a growing problem in the United States. With this in mind, I thought some of you might want to visit the web site of the American Diabetes Association www.diabetes.org. When you go to this page, look at the section called Top Diabetes Topics. Click on Diabetes Basics. Then click on Facts about Type 2 Diabetes on the left. This will take you to a page with an interesting animation called Type 2 Lou at the bottom of the page. This is an interesting animation giving a lot of information about Type 2 Diabetes. Although some people have no symptoms, others have one or more of the following symptoms - frequent urination, unusual thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss, extreme fatigue, frequent infections, blurred vision, cuts/burns that are slow to heal, and/or tingling/numbness in hands/feet.

FLU SHOTS Sunday, November 11th • 9am — 2pm • South Room, GSC

Free flu shots available to the community! Get your flu shot and stay healthy! Flu shots are provided in conjunction with the Health Ministry of FPCO and community partners.

STEWARDSHIP Stewardship, New Beginnings, Pledge Cards, Joy and Gratitude What do they have to do with each other? Stewardship is the act of giving back to God that which He has astoundingly entrusted to us. New Beginnings is a process of discerning what God wants us to do with the resources we have returned to Him. Pledge cards are a way for the church to implement this discernment process. Joy and gratitude are emotions we can choose to experience when we give, not simply because the church has bills to pay, but because God has been loving, faithful and gracious to us. Yellow pledge cards will be distributed in New Beginnings small groups and mailed out the week of October 28th. After reflection on God’s goodness to you, return these cards to the church office or put them in the offering plate no later than Sunday morning, November 18th.

FINANCIAL NEWS RUTH KUTCHER, TREASURER

This month marks the end of the third quarter as well as the end of three-fourths of the year, therefore, a more extensive summary of our finances will be given. Our Church, operations reflects a surplus of $19,745 for the month of September and a surplus of $23,106 for nine months ending September 30th. All of these results include transfers from New Growth, Endowments, Music, and GSC/Preschool accounts. The total transfer for the month was $30,599 and for the year-to-date was $98,538. We have used $43,950 from Endowment thus far this year and $45,000 from the GSC/Preschool thus far to sustain our church operations. In other words our income is not sufficient enough to maintain our church operations. We are blessed we have enough revenue from our endowment and GSC/Preschool to transfer into the Church operations budget. However, these monies will not last forever. Please pray the New Beginnings program will be able to help solve this financial dilemma. Our pre-school is doing well financially. They have a $517 surplus for the month of September. There is a $17,550 surplus for nine months ending September 30th. Both the month of September and the year-to-day do not include the transfers made to our Church operations. We are fortunate that we are blessed with this revenue. Our GSC operations have a surplus of $1,163 for the month of September. For the year-to date, there is a surplus of $32,278. These figures do not include the transfers made to our general operating costs. Again, we are truly blessed that we are getting revenues from this building. As far as our loan on the GSC acquisition we are making progress, thanks to your continuous support through pledges from the capital campaign and faith commitment as well as through the giving of special gifts and bequests. Our beginning loan was $1.5 million. We are gradually chipping away at the amount due. As of September 30th, we have paid $814,447. We have $685,553 left on our loan which is less than half of the original loan. Praise God for the support of this congregation in honoring your commitments to help bring the loan amount down. As we continue to be faithful to our Lord, pray for guidance as we chart course through these financially challenging times. As always if you have any questions about the budget, please do not hesitate to call me at 637-1329 or Lynn Winn at Ext. 108 in the church office. If you have any questions or comments about your pledges, Lynn will be glad to take your call.
