starts at home, as a small child. It would be nice to have a class for the whole fami-

ly and include children.” Who knows, with Imogene’s support, maybe we can do

just that! The June County Council meeting was dedicated to recognizing and cele-

FACEBOOK PAGE FOR LA PORTE COUNTY EXT. HOMEMAKERS!!

Keep the following information for your reference:

Rachel Smith of Coolspring Project club has set up a Facebook page for La Porte County.

Here are her instructions: “Log into your Facebook account then use the Facebook search bar at top

of the screen and type in LaPorteCountyIEHA (If you have a problem with this, try using spaces be-

tween words). This should give you two results. One result would be the official page and the other

the official group. When on the page, click the button “Like” to follow the page. When on the group,

click the “Join” button to join and follow the group. There is approval for the group so postings, pho-

tos, and the like will be permitted once the member is approved. Page:

https://www.facebook.com/LaPorteCountyIEHA Group: La Porte County IEHA (with spaces)

Please note: The page is public. This means anyone and everyone can see what is on it. It will most-

ly be used to promote Extension Homemakers. The group is closed. This means that only members

can see the photos and what is written. It is made private for our membership. I am hoping that

clubs will post photos and news of their doings. This will help clubs keep in touch with each other in

between council meetings, educational retreats, etc.”

REMINDER OF ENROLLMENT FORMS

Club Presidents received these forms for each member to fill out and return. This is a state

form, revised for La Porte County. Please keep some on hand for new members to fill out or to up-

date any information. You will be asked to fill this out every year. This year they are GREEN!

They have been extremely helpful to Marcia and our Treasurer Della Wittgren in identifying

changes that needed to be updated and it guarantees staying on the newsletter mailing list!

PUBLICITY FOR NEWSPAPERS

If you send in your club meeting notice to the News-Dispatch and Herald-Argus, be sure to

include YOUR contact number as well as the Extension Office number or they will not print it.

News-Dispatch prints club notices on Sunday. Also, since everything you send is usually printed

(many clubs just send they’re minutes), please be sure to delete any references to money

earned/spent, etc. Thanks!

NEW STATE FORMS FOR INSURANCE

The state recommends a standard liability insurance to cover your needs at any IEHA event.

This is especially true if you are serving any food to an OUTSIDE group (not necessary at a pri-

vate club meeting). Information will be sent to each president. An event form is required for each

food event for our county and/or club. This needs to be kept on record with the club and a copy

to the Extension Office.

UPCOMING EVENTS

2018 INTERNATIONAL FAIRE/FALL LUNCHEON

Kitchen Kin and Merry Moderns and Extension Homemakers clubs are

making plans for this lesson. More details will be in the September news-

letter. Remember (for all events) to please send one check as a club

made out to La Porte County Extension Homemakers and mail to our county treasurer

Kathy Ulman, 4876 E. Robin Ct., Rolling Prairie, IN 46371. Please include the NAMES

of each member attending. This is also open to guests.

TASTE OF EXTENSION HOMEMAKERS

Homespun Harmony and Merry Moderns are making plans are underway for this event.

The date is to be announced. Please remember that this committee consists of the county mem-

bership leader(s), one or two assigned clubs to assist and plan, and a representative from

each club. There is work involved, but it’s very satisfactory! This is a great outreach to our

community and an opportunity to let them know what Extension Homemakers is all about.

Plan to bring a friend to help them get acquainted with our organization. More information will

be sent when it is received.

PROGRAM BOOKS & JUNE COUNCIL MEETING

If you’re club was not represented at the last council meeting, your 2018-2019 program books are

available at the office. The auction at council meeting netted $130.00 for The Water Project. That is

enough for two water filters! Connie Carter used her auctioneering skills for some lively bidding!

Thank you to Homespun Harmony for help in assembling the program books.

EXTENSION HOMEMAKER NEWSLETTER ON LINE

You can also download or view this newsletter on our website—in color! Go to

www.extension.purdue.edu/laporte — Click on Family or Food on the top banner.

Deadline for information for the September newsletter is September 5th.

VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY SUPPORT FORMS

Every year each club is asked to submit your volunteer community support form where

you send in a year’s worth of information about your club’s volunteer efforts. Sometimes, it is

hard to remember everything all at once. Suggestion— perhaps have one member keep the

record and update it at each monthly meeting so that trying to remember everything that was

done that year isn’t so difficult! Or, there is discussion about turning them in quarterly. Due

date is March 1, 2019. Please keep your forms up-to-date! Our president needs to assemble all

this information into one report for the District meeting which is usually at the end of March.

members participate. There is something for EVERYONE to do. It’s a great

time of camaraderie and there is a great sense of satisfaction for a job well

done!

These two clubs have made a huge impact on our community. Please consider helping

in some way—monetarily or with your time.

NEEDLES GALORE ‘N’ MORE

Needles Galore and More are still meeting every Monday morning from 9 a.m. to

noon at the Extension Office. Come and learn to knit and/or crochet or help with their

outreach.

the Swanson Senior Center next to the overpass in downtown La Porte. Make this a

club project to come and help! They meet every Monday and also on Wednesday afternoon and

PAT DAY WINS ENTHUSIASM AWARD No one seems more deserving than our county president Pat Day to receive a state Enthu-

siasm Award! The state Leadership Focus Group organized this award to recognize those in our

organization who show “a great eagerness to be involved in a particular activity; get the ball roll-

ing; share their love for IEHA with others; and are they willing to go the extra mile for their club,

county and community.”

A winner from each Indiana district was chosen and Pat represented the Michigan City

district. All were recognized at the annual Home and Family Conference. While she was anxious-

ly looking for someone to nominate, others in her club secretly nominated her! Congratulations to

someone truly deserving of the newly formed ENTHUSIASM AWARD!

PENNY FLICK WINS THE CAM AWARD Also, winning award at Conference was Penny Flick of Kitchen Kin. The CAM Award

(Celebrate a Member) recognizes someone who encourages others, gets them excited about the

basics of Extension Homemakers and helps in making a difference in their community.

Congratulations, Penny!

HANDS ONLY CPR Hands-Only CPR Can Save Lives.

Most people who experience cardiac arrest at home, work or

in a public location die because they don't receive immediate CPR

from someone on the scene. As a bystander, do not be afraid. Your

actions can only help. When calling 911, you will be asked for your

location. Be specific, especially if you’re calling from a mobile

phone as that is not associated with a fixed address. Answering the

dispatcher’s questions will not delay the arrival of help.

How to Give Hands-Only CPR.

If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, call 911 and

push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of any

tune that is 100 to 120 beats per minute. Immediate CPR can double or even triple a person's

chance of survival.
