European Technology Platform on Renewable
Heating and Cooling (RHC-Platform)
The RHC-Platform aims at playing a decisive role in maximising synergies and strengthening efforts towards research, development and technological innovation.
Brings together stakeholders from the Biomass, Geothermal and Solar Thermal Sectors, along with the related industries to define a common strategy for the use of renewable energy technologies for heating and cooling.
Over 800 members across 4 technology panels from Industry, Research / Academia, Non-Governmental Organisations and Public Authority / Government.
Common Vision

Heating potential by renewable energy sources in EU
Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (2013)
5
Provide a comprehensive view of the strategic
research and innovation priorities to enable
an increasing share of H&C to be supplied by RES.
Identify state-of-the-art, research objectives
and critical targets (eg in terms of performance
increase / cost reduction) to realise the potential
of RHC technology.
Set up recommendations for R&D&D funding in the
timeframe of Horizon 2020 and in line with the
wider EU 2030 Energy and Climate Framework.

lower material losses
• Full demonstration of different pathways (e.g. bio-oil, torrefied biomass, steam
explosion, hydrothermal carbonised fuels)
• Market implementation of fully commercial plants, which includes:
Flexibility in raw material and standardised product quality
Sustainable and cost-efficient feedstock
New biomass fuel
commodities
Upgrading of biogas to
biomethane
9
Cost and Energy Efficient, environmentally Friendly
micro and small scale CHP
Small and micro-scale CHP constitute a high energy efficient solution
(global thermal - including electric - efficiency > 85%) for flexible bio-
electricity and thermal energy supply
Micro Scale CHP: serial products developed for residential scale
heating with electricity production or as cogeneration systems for
small industries, the service sector or in micro grids
Small scale CHPs are plants rather than products for
cogeneration in industries, the service sector or DHC
10
High efficient large-scale or industrial steam CHP - Technological challenges
11
Maintain high operational electrical efficiency, close to nominal, for variable feedstock and/or variable load
Increase steam parameters and/or heat medium temperature
Increase plant availability by addressing material related problems (creeping, cracking, corrosion, erosion, fouling and agglomeration)
Comply with stricter emissions requirements (catalyst deactivation issues, PM emissions, etc)
Identify new ash utilization options
Increase fuel flexibility, especially regarding agrobiomass and waste derived fuel
