I suppose that’s natural, to some extent, since kids tend to be self-centered. I wasn’t horribly stingy, but while I was taught to share just as most kids are, my default position always tended toward saving things for myself instead of giving them away. I do have a few vivid memories, from my childhood, though, of times when someone was generous to me. I remember my friend’s grandmother taking us to a K-mart store and telling us we could choose something we liked. I was so excited! It really stuck with me that she didn’t HAVE to buy me a toy, but she seemed genuinely pleased to treat us. I actually don’t remember what toy I chose, but I remember the feeling of being grateful and surprised. Another time, I was visiting a family in our church and when it was time to leave, the little boy offered me the storybook I had been looking at during our visit. I assumed his mother would be upset if she knew he was trying to give his book away, but she agreed that it would be nice for him to let me keep it. I will never forget the feeling I had--it was a feeling that was more about his generosity than it was about my desire to have the book. On a much more serious level, I will also never forget the morning that we got the call that my aunt had received a kidney from a family who made the decision to donate a loved one’s organs. It was literally the gift of life from a total stranger, and we are forever grateful. I write all of this to explain that while I am not the most generous person, maybe that makes me the right person to talk about stewardship. I’m the first to confess that it doesn’t come naturally to me, and that I have had to develop the habit of giving over time. As we move into the season of our annual stewardship emphasis, I hope that you will reflect on a time when someone surprised you with their generosity. Maybe it was a big thing, or maybe it was small--like a book or a toy--but I want you to reacquaint yourself with that feeling. What God has done in Christ is the utmost in generosity, and we are all recipients of this gift without having done anything to earn it. Caring for our church and one another is a collective act of generosity that I need to be a part of! It feels good to practice the discipline of thinking of someone other than myself. Sometimes, it is healthy to feel small... not because we are insignificant, but because we need each other. I look forward to the chance to exercise generosity with you, my church family, in the month of October. Beth Masters Stewardship Team Chair Surprised by Generosity

Forward in Faith Thanks YOU! Thank you to all those who attended the Forward in Faith (FiF) roundtable this past Sunday! Your con-structive and heartfelt feedback is valued as we move forward in meaningfully growing St. Luke’s. This church - each of you - is what makes St. Luke’s a unique and vital faith community. Each of you will serve a critical role in helping to grow our church. St. Luke’s has so much to offer our community: servant hearts, a fervent desire to follow Christ, and a tight knit, wel-coming community and we’re eager to work together towards relevant, long-term growth.

Next Steps:As mentioned, here are the next steps following Sunday’s roundtable:• Compile responses no later than October 9 (to be sent to FiF committee members)• FiF members will review responses to explore areas in which we can grow, change, and strengthen• Next FiF meeting: October 16 The team will begin to layout plans to move forward!• There will be FiF updates in the Epistle and a quarterly FiF newsletter beginning in 2017 Unable to participate in the roundtable discussion? If you were unable to attend the roundtable and would like to contribute, please respond to the fol-lowing questions:1. What are some areas in which St. Luke’s excels and why do we excel? How does this corre-

spond with our call to be disciples?2. What are some areas in which we can improve? What frustrates you and what are some viable

solutions?3. What are some thoughts or ideas you’d like to share with the FiF committee as we work together

to meaningfully grow St. Luke’s?4. What are some areas in which you can be more welcoming to visitors of all ages? 5. What are some ways in which you can connect St. Luke’s with the community?6. What is your role in living out this vision? Please place your legible/typed responses in Megan’s mailbox (located in Hospitality Hall) or email to [email protected] by Sunday, October 9 to ensure your responses are available for review prior to the next FiF meeting.

Together we can move Forward in Faith!Megan

BIBLE STUDY 6:15 PMSt. Luke’s Lounge

The Word of God for the People of God

Bettye Jo Masters is leading a study that focuses on the question: “How can I read God’s words in ways that better guide my

walk and talk?” This study will look at ways to study the Bible and learn some practical techniques to help those words stick in our

every day life. Bring your Bible!

Thanks Be to God!

In October, Sue Whitt will continue the study. Each Sunday morning after Harry reads the scripture, he says, “The word of God for the people of God,” and we respond, “Thanks be to God.” But, sometimes we are more

sincere in our thanks than at others. In the October Bible Study on Wednesday evenings, Sue Whitt will be leading a discus-sion about what to do with those scriptures that we find hard to accept. Readings will be from 1 Timothy, 1 Corinthians, and Romans.

MUSIC NOTES Sports Shorts from the CLCHow lovely it was to worship together last Sunday during Mu-sic Appreciation! As always I feel incredibly blessed to serve this congregation that cares so deeply about great church music. And to get to stand in front of such an amazing choir… I am so blessed. It was great seeing so many new faces in the congregation. Thank you all for your efforts in helping to promote not just this past Sunday but the entire music sea-son. I truly believe it will be a season like none other!I am sure most of you received a post card outlining the 16’-17’ season. I have received so much feedback from both St. Luke’s congregation and even more from community folks. Thank you to all of the extremely generous benefactors that made the mailing possible.Looking ahead, mark your calendars now for the first Sun-day in November (All Saints). When I think of All Saints Sun-day it is very easy for me to begin to feel down. Thinking of the great cloud of witnesses in my life that have gone before me, it is only natural to miss them. But in the same breath, what an example they left me. Even in meeting people here at St. Luke’s in my short two years that have since gone to sleep in the hope of resurrection, what fantastic saints this church has had and still has. We will gather on All Saints and I am sure there will be tears, but I’m also sure there will be laughter at memories and smiles as we rest in the knowledge that this life is temporal and our loved ones are still with us. I look forward to seeing you in worship.S.C. Toe, Director of St. Luke’s Music Ministries

October 13th - 16th ... The Walk to Emmaus at Lake-shore. The “Walk to Emmaus” is a 72-hour experience beginning Thursday evening and ending Sunday evening. You will spend three busy but very enjoyable days at Lakeshore Retreat Center. Emmaus Walks are held each spring and fall with men attending one week and women two weeks later. You will live and study together in sing-ing, prayer, worship, and discussion. Discussions center around fifteen talks given by laity and clergy, presenting the theme of God’s grace, and how that grace comes alive in the Christian community and expresses itself in the world. Participants share the daily celebration of Holy Communion to begin to understand more fully the pres-ence of Christ in his body of believers. You will experience God’s grace personally through the prayers and acts of service of a living support community. In order to participate in an Emmaus Walk you must be sponsored by member of the Emmaus community. Spon-sor and participant application forms may be printed from the following website www.emmaus.tn.org.
