King Herod, the most powerful man in the region, was greatly troubled to hear about the birth of

a king. Why would a reigning king fear a little child? Perhaps because he believed if word spread

that a future messiah had been born, the Jews would be harder to control. They were easier to

dominate when they were without hope, without a leader.

Herod was correct. Wise men from the East looking for the King of the Jews fulfilled prophecies

that foretold all nations would come to Israel looking for a messianic leader.

Herod was also troubled because, if indeed this newborn was a king, he had a pretender and a

competitor right under his royal nose. King Herod was correct again.

Although Jesus did not pretend to overthrow the Romans, he did come with authority and would

upend the existing order. Jesus would preach to the heart and demand that no one sit on that

throne except God his Father.

The painter, Pseudo Domenico di Michelino, in Adoration of the Kings, presents the arrival of the

Magi as a procession of vassals showing homage to their king. Kneeling, bowing, and standing

erect with gifts in hand, authorities from far away are reverencing the newborn royalty who sits

on Mother Mary’s lap. His royal hall is the hillside, his scepter a baby finger, his royal family is

Joseph and Mary.

These Gentile kings were the first to do what all of creation and all of history have been doing

since then—bending their knee to the King of the Universe. Herod was right to worry. +

Jesus would preach to the heart and demand that no one sit on that throne

except God his Father.

“Herodes estaba en lo cierto”

El rey Herodes, el hombre más poderoso de la región, se sintió muy preocupado al enterarse del

nacimiento de un rey. ¿Por qué un rey reinante temería a un niño pequeño? Quizás porque creía que si

se corriera la voz de que había nacido un futuro mesías, los judíos serían más difíciles de controlar.

Eran más fáciles de dominar cuando estaban sin esperanza, sin un líder.

Herodes tenía razón. Los sabios de Oriente que buscaban al Rey de los judíos cumplieron las profecías

que predijeron que todas las naciones vendrían a Israel en busca de un líder mesiánico.

Herodes también estaba preocupado porque, si en verdad este recién nacido era un rey, tenía un

pretendiente y un competidor justo debajo de sus narices reales. El rey Herodes tenía razón

nuevamente. Aunque Jesús no pretendió derrocar a los romanos, sí vino con autoridad y cambiaría el

orden existente. Jesús predicaría al corazón y exigiría que nadie se sentara en ese trono excepto Dios

su Padre.

El pintor Pseudo Domenico di Michelino, en Adoración de los reyes, presenta la llegada de los magos

como una procesión de vasallos en homenaje a su rey. Arrodillándose, inclinándose y de pie con los

regalos en la mano, las autoridades de lejos están reverenciando a la realeza recién nacida que se

sienta en el regazo de la Madre María. Su salón real es la ladera, su cetro es un dedo meñique, su

familia real es José y María.

Estos reyes gentiles fueron los primeros en hacer lo que toda la creación y toda la historia han estado

haciendo desde entonces: doblar sus rodillas ante el Rey del Universo. Herodes tenía razón al

preocuparse.

Jesús predicaría al corazón y exigiría que nadie se sentara en ese trono

excepto Dios su Padre.

Must be a baptized Catholic who has already received the sacraments of Communion and Confirmation.

If a sponsor is married, he or she must be married in the Catholic Church.

If a sponsor is single, he or she cannot be living with anybody of the opposite sex without the Sacrament of Matrimony.

One sponsor is enough, but if there are two, then it must be a man and a woman.

People who are only civilly married or who live in common law cannot be godparents.

The godparent must set an example of Christian life to the godchild.
