On Tuesday we had 4 executives and 14 Principals from the Netherlands visit our school, to gain an understanding of how we have applied the research of John Hattie in
our everyday classroom activities to increase opportunities for student engagement and improve outcomes. They came to speak with teachers and students around the school, and were impressed with the authenticity of their experience. We presented them with our Project EPIC and our diversity videos, prior to sharing information about the school journey of change in our manner of teaching and engagement of students. Our Dutch visitors were ably led by our school leadership team, had the opportunity to witness lessons in action and to discover students’ understanding of their goals and markers. Huge thanks to the student leadership team, all our students and our fabulous staff for the warm welcome they provided to all our visitors. When leaving the school our international colleagues commented on the value they had gained from the school visit. According to tour leaders, they spoke repeatedly about our school, having enjoyed the company of our student leadership team, and the opportunity to see visible learning in action. A great
opportunity for our school to showcase sound pedagogy, and children to shine.

SCHOOL NEWS
School Working Bee—this Saturday 25 February—please bring your wheelbarrows, shovels,
gloves, some spare time and get into our gardens, to help make our school a better place for our
students. There will be some P & C members here from 8 am until approximately 4 pm.
Throughout the school year, teachers focus on developing skills to building positive relationships among
peers— some children learn these through experience and others need to be taught these skills specifically
in order to apply them. The focus of our teaching points will last for blocks of two weeks, and will be
placed in the newsletter. For the first few weeks of school, however, we will be focussing on the
development of friendships
INCLUDING OTHERS
Parents, we ask that you too go through these skills with your children, and discuss the dos and don’ts.
Perhaps you can ask them if they have tried some of the strategies and what the result was. Children learn
best when they are supported from both school and home with a consistent message. Your assistance is
greatly appreciated.
Dos
Remember that if you refuse to allow others to
join your games, you will hurt their feelings.
Feelings are important,
Look around you and see if anyone looks like
they would like to be part of your game. They
may show this by asking if they can play or by
just standing near by themselves.
Smile and say something like “Why don’t you
play too?”, in a friendly voice.
Find ways to make the game or activity adapt
or change to allow another person to play or
take turns to play.
Don’ts
Don’t ignore people who may like to be
included in your game.
Don’t thnk that your group of friends will be
wrecked if you invite someone else to joing in
your games sometimes.
Key Value
Schools’ Clean Up Day - Bring gloves children!
SCHOOL NEWS
On March 3, 2017 Engadine Public School Students will join with
students throughout NSW to make a concerted effort to clean up
around the school yard, and classroom environments. This day is
a tribute to the CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA campaign which has
been running for the past 27 years. In 1989 Ian Kiernan had a
simple idea to make a difference in his own backyard - Sydney
Harbour. He organised a community event with the support of a committee of friends - Clean
Up Sydney Harbour. This simple idea has now become the nation's largest community-based
environmental event, with the first official Clean Up Australia Day on 21 January 1990. The
clean up has now been extended to include both schools and businesses. It’s an amazing testament to the power of
one. You can make a difference!
Citizenship (Community Key of Success)
Citizenship can be defined as membership of a group. It allows
certain privileges and also comes with obligations to follow the rules
of the community or the groups. Citizenship also means the
relationship between the person and the community to which they
belong—not just in following rules and procedures, but also in
following the moral and social code.
Being a good citizen of Engadine Pubic School means more than
basic rights and responsibilities, it involves quality of character,
behaviour and interactions with others in community. We want our
students to be active, informed and responsible citizens .
A good citizen is one who :
Cares about the feelings and rights of others
Shows concern for the safety and well-being of others
Stays informed about issues and voices their opinion /votes
Conserves resources and follows the 3R’s (Reduce, Reuse,
Recycle)
Uses their skills to make a better community
The benefits students may gain from being a good citizen include:
Self-confidence and resilience to deal with everyday
occurrences—like a disagreement with another
Gives them voice in their school community
Enables them to make valuable contributions to the world in which they live
Prepares them for the ups and downs of being an adult in the working world.
Being a good citizen takes an effort which is valued by peers, staff and families alike.

SAVE THE DATE—First Fete Meeting 6 MARCH 2017
EPS FETE —EPS has set the date
for its bi-annual Fete - it's
Saturday 26th August!
For those new to the school, this is an activity that takes a mammoth amount of planning, time and co-ordination, and to ensure we get off to a good start we have set the date for our first planning meeting, Monday 6th March at 7.30pm in EPS staff room. We welcome everyone to attend and want to make sure every family (especially new ones) have the opportunity to get involved. We now have over 250 families attending EPS and would like to see everyone helping to make this event a great success! We would be extremely grateful if every family could nominate to do “just one thing’ for the Fete. If you are curious about how you can get involved, the following is an example of the work streams and roles that are required to be managed and coordinated by EPS volunteers: Logistics, entertainment, external stalls, rides, food options, EPS BBQ, class stalls, raffle, sponsorship, marketing, advertisement, graphic design, site layout, first aid, staffing volunteers on the day, pack/clean up and overall Fete Co-ordinator ... to name but a few….. This is a great day for our school and the students and we look forward to making a memorable 2017 fete together! We look forward to seeing you on the 6th March.
