THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE

Dear Parents and Community Members On behalf of the College Community, I would like to congratulate Andrew Kang who was nominated as School Captain. I am confident that Andrew will lead his team very well and rep-resent St Edward’s with pride. Year 11 and 13 Students We wish our year 11 and 13 students every success in their public examinations. Our thoughts are with you. A Very Short Term Because Easter was very late this year, the third term has a very limited number of weeks. At the Middle and Senior School Assembly on Monday, the students were advised of this fact. Fo-cus and hard work are 2 very important keys. World Book Day - 4 May 2011 I wish to congratulate Andrew T (7y) winner of 3rd prize in the Secondary Schools Competi-tion World Book Day 2011 Library Quiz, organised by the Malta School Library Association. Summer Uniform Changeover: Monday 9 May A reminder that students in years 6-11 must wear a dark brown belt. Michael Chittenden Headmaster

THE EDWARD

On the 4 May 2011, Malta celebrated World Book Day 2011. Andrew T (7y), along

with other students from St Edward’s, took part in a National Secondary Schools

Competition. Andrew won third prize in this Competition. A certificate and a num-

ber of books were presented to Andrew by the Schools Library Service, Student Ser-

vices Department of the Directorate for Educational Services. Ms Micheline Sciber-

ras – Director General did the honours.

What is World Book Day? In 1995 UNESCO decided to designate this day as World

Book Day making it a global celebration of books and reading as an essential part of

learning and fun. Everyone is encouraged to become involved - in particular chil-

dren and young adults.

The event began with a play put up by St Clare College’s students called the ‘Book

Parade’. It highlighted the different types of books that are found in the library,

ranging from encyclopaedias to fiction and non-fiction books. The play was fol-

lowed by a short film called ‘Il-Grajja tat-Teatru’ adapted from the book by the

same title written by Trevor Zahra - an interesting story of the history of The Opera

House through the eyes of a Maltese family. The message of this film was that “if

you want to understand today, you must research the past”. Mrs Tania Sultana, our

School’s librarian attended this event.
