THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE

Dear Parents and Community Members It is the time of the year when the Malta Community Chest Fund and its team plan and work on the L-

Istrina events. The concept is to raise the notion of charitable contributions in the run up to the Christmas

festivities.

Again this year the school is taking part in the L-Istrina BOV Piggy Bank Charity Campaign. Each class

has been given a Piggy Bank in which to place donations. We hope that each little piggy goes to market full

of money for good causes. St Edward’s College is honoured to be selected as one of the few independent

schools to host a visit in November of Mrs Abela, the wife of the President. Our aim is to have every

money box filled and returned long before the live broadcast on TV of L-Istrina on Monday 26th December.

Winter Fair *

Sunday’s Winter Fair organized by SEPTA looks to be a good day out for all. There are attractions for all

and lots of activities for children and adults. If you would like to say hello to me, you will find me in the

basketball area, where anyone can enter the ‘Beat the Teacher’ competition at free-throws. Perhaps you

might be up for the challenge yourself!

Data Protection

Please check the website for the Data Protection Permission to use photographs of pupils for publicity and

promotion reasons. We need your permission to do so and your acknowledgement that these pictures can-

not be used by a third party. The form should be downloaded, signed and returned to the class registration

teacher. Thank you.

THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE

Saint Edward was born 1003 as a prince in Oxford, England.

When his father was unseated by Danish invasion. Edward and his

brother were sent to Denmark to be quietly killed, but the officer

in charge took pity on the boys, and sent them to Sweden, and from

there they went to the King of Hungary to be raised and educated.

Edward’s interests were in things religious. When grown, the

brothers moved to Normandy and waited their chance to return to

England.

In 1035 Edward and his brother Alfred tried to regain the crown of England, but they were turned

back, Alfred was killed, and Edward returned to Normandy. He returned to England again in 1042,

and was chosen king by acclamation, ascending the throne on 3 April. Edward gained a reputation as

just and worthy of the kingship, and the people of England supported him.

During his reign Edward repulsed invasion, helped restore the King of Scotland to his throne, remitted

unjust taxes, and was noted for his generosity to the poor and strangers, and for his piety and love of

God. He married to satisfy his people, but he and the queen remained chaste. He is reported to have

had the power to heal by touch. He built many churches, including the famous Westminster Abbey. He

died on 5 January 1066 of natural causes, his body stayed incorrupt.
