TRAILER: The trailer is a "Lifetime" trailer from Canadian Tire. $1099 regular price, but I got mine on sale for $850 last fall. (Sears sells exactly the same trailer, under the Coleman name, for $400 more). The trailer folds up until it's just 29" wide (it can fit through the door of your house), plus the tongue retracts. Made in Korea - excellent reviews. Total carrying capacity is 500 Kg (1000 lbs +), which means it could carry the weight of 20 kayaks if you could fit them all on. KAYAK RACKS: A friend of mine designed and welded up the racks (green in the pictures) and extended the tongue by 3 ft (not yet done in pictures), and I forced $100 on him for doing it for me. Realistically, if you supplied a welding shop with the design, measurements and the square metal tubing, cutting and welding it up might cost you $200. The tubing cost about $120 at Metal Supermarket. Various bolts, nyloc nuts and flat washers cost about $13. Paints about $20. Wiring harness extension because of the longer tongue, about $5. Total cost including trailer was about $1135, and about 20 hours of combined labour. KAYAK SADDLES: I already had the Malone J- Style Autoloader saddles, purchased at Ocean Sports on sale for $130 per kayak, so about $550 with tax. WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE?: The kayaks are easier to load and unload because they don't have to be lifted 6 feet up onto the roof of our van; when we get home from a trip on the water I just hose down the boats and wheel the trailer and kayaks into the garage - no unloading off the roof of the vehicle when we're sore and tired at Calendar Wednesday, May 26, 2010 7:30 PM NWV General Meeting (Open House, see page 6 for details) Northwest Voyageurs Canoe and Kayak Club www.nwvoyageurs.com Box 1341, Edmonton, Alberta, T5J 2N2 Continued on page 4 May 2010

The Eddyline is the newsletter for the Northwest Voyageurs Canoe and Kayak Club of Edmonton, Alberta and is published monthly except for July and August of each year.

Most club members receive a PDF copy by email or receive notification that it is available online. If you currently receive a printed copy and are able to receive a PDF copy instead, please let the membership coordinator know so we can start sending you an electronic copy.

Well, in case you haven’t noticed it, paddling season has arrived. I believe that Ric Fetterly was the first to officially test the waters for our club this year with a trip to the Pembina River in mid April. For much of the river, they could have traded their two tandem canoes and one kayak for stilts. Let’s hope we get some rain to raise the waters!

Judging from the success of our winter pool sessions, we have an eager new crop of paddlers and some improved veterans. We were oversubscribed for all sessions: two kayak courses, a canoe rescue/recovery clinic, a kayak rescue/recovery clinic, and a kayak roll clinic. Additionally, for the first time, Edmond put on a special introductory session for the Confederation Pool staff, showing them the fundamentals of paddling and how to rescue an overturned kayaker.

I tried to get a jump on the season by going to the Gulf Islands over Easter. However, we were thwarted by high winds that closed the ferries, left downed trees throughout Vancouver Island and area, and produced dangerous waters with high waves. The weather at that time was better in Edmonton, although our waters were still a bit icy. Now, with the ice gone, we have good opportunities for paddling, notwithstanding the occasional shallow river.

We have a fairly busy trip schedule with about an equal number of white water and “flat’ water trips. Also, there are several multi-club gatherings, such as the Pincher Creek white water rendezvous (22 - 24 May), the NE Alberta Paddle Rendezvous for canoes and kayaks at Beaver Lake near Lac la Biche (4 – 6 June), and the Grande Cache white water festival (5 – 6 June). Combined with the weekly sessions at Rundle Park and several trips on the North Saskatchewan within the city, they give us lots of chances to paddle.

Speaking of the North Saskatchewan river, we will have a visitor from the U of A (Ofer Arazy) to tell us about a City of Edmonton project to set up a user-input information system about river valley conditions, the idea being that folks using the river valley can use their digital phones and such to provide notes and photos to keep the system up to date. From our perspective as paddlers, we likely see things differently from trail users. (So far, the most interesting thing that I found along the river was a tiger salamander nestled in a small plastic “coffin” complete with plastic leaves for a bed.) Come out and see how you can get involved and how we can benefit from the city’s plan—which may include a trip down the river in the near future.

Ofer will be at our Open House on 26 May. It is our last social event before our summer picnic. MEC will also be coming to display some of their paddling and outdoor products. And, we may have some slides or videos, depending on time, so come out and bring your friends who may want to see what we do in this club.

Special thanks to the presenters at our last two social events: Alison Dinwoodie, for her slides of the old days of paddling in Scotland, and Cindy and Dale, for their presentation of recent trips to Thailand and Vietnam. The technologies were different, but the spirit of adventure was the same.

Keep up that spirit of adventure! See you on the water.

the end of a trip; lift the racks off the trailer and I have a utility trailer for hauling other stuff around; and, come winter, hang the kayaks and the racks in the garage, fold up the trailer and tuck it into a corner.

THANKS, AND PASSING IT ON:   My thanks go out to Edmond Duggan, Frank Geddes and Peter Mitchell for their encouragement and advice on this project.  Accordingly, if anyone would like to borrow my racks to make a pattern for a rack to fit a Lifetime trailer, you can contact me at (780)460-5785 or [email protected].

I'm doing up a list of all the metal and assorted hardware required for this project.

See you on the water,

Will

Trailer with kayak racks (green) slipped into place, and 3 sets of saddles bolted on. Still need to bolt on 4th set of saddles.  Also, trailer tongue has yet to be extended by 3 feet.

Trailer folded up for winter storage - 29" wide!  Black rod on the ground is the crank for opening and closing the trailer.

Trailer opened up, ready for kayak racks.

Just back from the Sturgeon River.  Trailer with 4 kayaks up, plus lots of room in the trailer bed for gear.  Front and rear trailer panels lift out if we wanted to carry 2 more kayaks in the box.

Up the creek without a paddle*? No problem…use a pole

Poling Your Canoe

June 20th, Islet Lake and Pembina River

This informal introduction is intended to get you started in the art of poling. The session will begin on Isle Lake at Gainsford and introduce basic techniques. Learn how easy it is to get along even when your pole can’t reach the bottom of the lake! Lots of time for just messing about in your boat with a pole. After lunch we’ll move to Pembina River to use techniques on moving water - ferrying, eddy-turns, eddy hopping etc – for both up-river and down-river travel.

You need to provide all your own equipment including your pole…easy to make and at about $25 a pole is a lot cheaper than a paddle! Ask Alan for instructions.

Contact Alan (780-487-0607 or [email protected]) for more information and to sign up.
