The Dean's Honor Roll recog- nizes students taking at least 15 se- mester hours who have maintained at least a 3.75 grade point average (GPA) out of a possible 4.0 during the most recent grading period. A second designation, "Distin- guished Student," recognizes students who earned a 3.25 to 3.75 GPA while _taking at least 15 hours. Among those recognized were: Timothy Clark Powers, Distinguished Student (DS), a freshman majoring in Agricultural Systems Management, and Rebecca Anne Burrow (DS), a junior majoring in Kinesiology, both from Eagle Lake; and Stephanie Leigh Thompson (DS), a freshman majoring in Horticulture, from Garwood. •Jerald Dale Obenhaus of Eagle Lake earned a place on the Dean's Honor Roll for the Fall Quarter in Texas State Technical College classes at the Texas Marine Education Center in Palacios. During my tenure as commis- sioner, I have fully comprehended that what gets tested gets taught. Testing is an integral part of the learning proc- ess. All of us are tested every day at work and at home. The state tests that our students take in school mirror the curriculum that they must learn. When students are learning their daily les- sons, they are preparing for tests. Teachers are not expected to just "teach the test." However, teaching children the objectives over which they will be tested is fair and appropri- ate. Assessment is a key component of education since it confirms what we know and points out where we need to learn more. Given the societal and academic expectations of the 21st century, we must prepare our students. We must arm our students with the advanced level of learning that they will need—whether they assemble computers, teach children, or serve as corporate CEOs. Paving the way for our children's future is our job; ensur- ing their success is our legacy. It's time to raise the bar.     •Texas A&M University has named its honor students for the 1998 fall semester, recognizing several thousand students for outstanding academic performance.

    The Dean's Honor Roll recog- nizes students taking at least 15 se- mester hours who have maintained at least a 3.75 grade point average (GPA) out of a possible 4.0 during the most recent grading period.

    A second designation, "Distin- guished Student," recognizes students who earned a 3.25 to 3.75 GPA while

    obtain a wealth of information about the performance of our schools and students for this expenditure on as- sessment.

    During my tenure as commis- sioner, I have fully comprehended that what gets tested gets taught. Testing is an integral part of the learning proc- ess. All of us are tested every day at work and at home. The state tests that our students take in school mirror the curriculum that they must learn. When students are learning their daily les- sons, they are preparing for tests. Teachers are not expected to just "teach the test." However, teaching children the objectives over which they will be tested is fair and appropri- ate.

    Assessment is a key component of education since it confirms what we know and points out where we need to learn more. Given the societal and academic expectations of the 21st century, we must prepare our students. We must arm our students with the advanced level of learning that they will need—whether they assemble computers, teach children, or serve as corporate CEOs. Paving the way for our children's future is our job; ensur- ing their success is our legacy. It's time to raise the bar.
