From the dot Desk

Five Years of Connecting!

With each passing year at Ali Bin Ali, our Group grows in the number of activities andevents taking place on our calendar. With that being said, we must also face the realitythat we live in an age where we have more communication tools, but less time tocommunicate, more news sources, but less awareness of things that really matter.Consequently, it is crucial for a local and regional conglomerate like ours to create aplatform where the events, projects, campaigns and news of the Group are shared andpublished. Therefore, a publication like The dot becomes more important than ever before.

With the release of this edition of our company’s newsletter, we have arrived at a reasonto celebrate. The dot turns five - that's five years of connecting and buildingrelationships, of announcing our company's growth, events and achievements, five yearsof appreciating our employees and their work, five years of celebrating birthdays andmore! Over these years, The dot has given voice to the strength and unity that lies at theheart of our Group. It has shined a spotlight on happenings, people and achievements weare proud of.

However, while celebrating that, let's look at how we can make this publication betterand take it to the next level. So on behalf of the editorial team, let me place a task beforeyou. Keeping the next five years in mind, why don't you send us your suggestions on Thedot. What you would like to see more of? What you would like to see less of? How youthink it can serve you better?

After all, Ali Bin Ali is your Group and The dot is your voice!

What isPhishing?Phishing is an e-mail fraudmethod in which the perpetratorsends out legitimate-looking emailin an attempt to gather personaland financial information fromrecipients. Typically, the messagesappear to come from well-knownand trustworthy Web sites.Communications purporting torelated popular social news, auction, online payment process orIT administrators are commonlyused to lure the unsuspectingpublic. Phishing emails maycontain links to websites that areinfected with malware (virus orworms or Trojans). Phishing oftendirect users to enter details at afake website whose look and feelare almost identical to thelegitimate one. Phishing is used todeceive users, and exploits thesecurity technologies.

How to spot a phishingattempt? Phishing email tries to create asense of danger or urgency.Something bad will happen unlessyou react. The closure of youraccount is a very common threatwhen phishing for e-mail accounts. Phishing emails usually embedlinks to a web page that looks likean official page of, for example, your mail operator. But it is actuallycontrolled by the attacker, who alsoreceives any information you enter. You are hacked if you enter yourmail user name and password, orother valuable information. Here is an example of what aphishing scam in an emailmessage might look like:

What should you do toavoid being phished? Check what address the link istaking you to. Note that the textforming the visible part of the linkmay look like a web URL but still belinked to a totally different address.Hover the mouse pointer over thelink and examine the address thatthe mail client or browser showsyou. Make sure that the addressmatches the company or site thatthe link is claimed to point to. Forexample: The login to Gmailshould start with“https://accounts.google.com/”but a phishing site targeting Gmailmay use an address like“http://accounts.google.com.etw368hj.nu/”. The latter does notbelong to Gmail

Get familiar with the conceptof secured web pages and howto recognize them. Login pages ofimportant services are typicallyprotected this way. Their addressesstart with “https://” instead of

“http://” and your browser showsa lock or similar symbol next to theaddress field If you suspect that there reallymay be a problem with any of youraccounts or the content of theemail sent, then log in with thelink that you normally use to accessthe account or such service. Do notuse (click) a link in the emailmessage Report any phishing email youreceive on your Company’s emailId to Information Security Managerwith an email message copywithout clicking any link andwithout providing a response to thesender or providing a return receipt

Face TimeTry and communicate with yourteam face-to-face as much as youcan. Nothing replaces face-to-face communication, as it allowsyou to read body language, assess levels of understanding, and build relationships.

Crystal ClearBe clear about your own culturalprofile. Only when you are clearabout your cultural profile andhow it influences your work, yourcommunication style, feelingsand actions, can you direct yourteam. This authentic approach toyour own cultural identity canhelp improve performance foryou and your team.

Less Is MoreCultural differences can createobstacles to effective teamwork, especially with multiculturalteams. The challenge in dealingwith these teams successfully isto identify the original cultural

causes of conflict. Intervene onlywhen necessary, get the teamback on track, enable andempower them to deal withfuture challenges on their own.

A Stitch in Time Saves NineAchieving team cohesion andshared vision means encouragingdialogue and communication. This requires time, and it is highlyrecommended that you investthis time into finding out moreabout your team members andhow their national cultureinfluences their behavior andvalues.

Build TrustTrust builds over time and withevery action. Make sure you areaccountable for your actions andupfront in your dealings withothers. Do you do what you sayyou will do? Non-delivery willdestroy trust and credibility everytime.

Walk a Mile in Their ShoesAs an effective leader you needto be able to truly understandyour team’s perspective. Soregularly ‘check in’ with yourteam members, listen to seewhat’s happening with them, their assignment and theirdevelopment.

State the Rules of the GameRules and roles have to be setand understood by everyone. Therules of the game have to benegotiated and people need tobe comfortable with their ownroles. To ensure effective teammanagement, the manager mustmake certain that there is clarityand shared expectations. Makesure that they understand what'sgoing on, so that the team's

objectives aren't forgotten orshelved.

What Is E-WasteE-waste is electrical andelectronic equipment ofany kind that has beendiscarded. This includespractically anythingpowered by anelectrical source (e.g.,from a power socket ora battery). Commontypes of e-wasteinclude the following:

• Infocomm technology (ICT)equipment, such as desktop, laptop and tablet computers, mobile phones, computer andmobile phone batteries, peripherals and accessories suchas keyboards, modems, monitors, computer mice, docking stations, hard disk drives, printed circuitboards, battery chargers, etc.• Home appliances, such as TVs,fridges, air conditioners, washingmachines, rice cookers, microwave and toaster ovens, electric kettles, food processorsand blenders, electric fans,DVD/video/music players, radios,hi-fis, vacuum cleaners, etc.

• Other types of e-wasteinclude lamps & lighting, electronic toys, sports andleisure equipment, etc.E-waste is mostly made up ofmetal and plastic components, but also contains small amountsof heavy metals and substancesof concern (e.g., in printedcircuit boards). The wide varietyof e-waste makes it hard togeneralise the material content– for example, fridges and airconditioners in particular containrefrigerants to enable cooling totake place, but theserefrigerants may also contributeto ozone layer depletion orclimate change; the materialcomposition of a mobile phoneis very different from that of anelectric kettle.

Give old electronics a newlife and help preserve ourprecious planet.Technology is amazing — it powersour world and connects us to friends, family, and information. Every timewe turn around there’s a new gadgetthat’s faster and cooler than the lastone. So what happens to our techwhen we’re not using it anymore? Itdoesn’t seem right to just trash it orstash it in a drawer. And weshouldn’t. Just because they are outof use doesn’t mean they areworthless. They are filled withfascinating and reusable materialslike plastics, rare earth metals andprecious metals which can berecycled through a process we callurban mining. Urban mining is theprocess of extracting these preciousmetals and rare earth metals fromrecycled electronics without mining inecologically sensitive areas. Not onlyis it better for the environment, but insome cases it’s actually more efficientthan traditional mining. Consider this:one tonne of rercycled smartphonesyields 324 times more gold than thesame weight in ore from a traditionalmine. The Earth is reaching out foryour help

1. Balance Iron Levels in Your BloodFor each unit of blood donated, you loseabout one-quarter of a gram of iron. The fact that donating blood helps to rid yourbody of excess iron is one of the greatestbenefits it offers. High body iron stores havebeen suggested as a risk factor for acutemyocardial infarction, donation of bloodcould theoretically reduce the risk bylowering body iron stores. Therefore, atimely drop in iron levels, especially throughblood donation is benefitial.Excess iron has also been associated with anincreased risk ofcancer. Patientswho regularlydonated bloodhad a lower risk ofdeveloping cancerthan those whodid not.2. Better BloodFlowThe fast-paced,junk lovingregular lifestylesof ours makes our blood hypercoagulable, meaning it makes it thick and slow moving, which increases the risk of having a bloodclot or stroke. Hypercoagulable bloodcontributes to inflammation, because whenblood does not flow well, oxygen can't get tothe tissues.Repeated blood donations help the blood toflow better, possibly helping to limit damageto the lining of blood vessels, which shouldresult in fewer arterial blockages. 3. You Get a Mini PhysicalEvery blood donor gets a “mini physical”prior to donation. Body temperature ischecked along with blood pressure, pulse,

and hemoglobin. The blood will also betested for 13 infectious diseases like HIV,hepatitis B and C, West Nile Virus, andsyphilis.Donating blood is certainly not areplacement for medical care, but it doesgive a (free) glimpse into one’s health (aswell as notice if you’ve been exposed to aninfectious disease without knowing).4. Burns CaloriesPeople burn approximately 650 calories perdonation of one pint of blood, according totheUniversity of California, San Diego. A

donor who regularlydonates blood can lose asignificant amount ofweight, but it should notbe thought of as a weightloss plan by any means. To donate blood theAmerican Red Crossrequires donors to weighat least 110 pounds andmaintain healthy ironlevels in the body.

5. Gives you a sense of significanceWhile there are several physical benefits todonating blood, the most powerful healthbenefit is arguably in the psychologicalrealm. Donating blood means that someone(or multiple people) somewhere will begetting the help they desperately need.Patenaude believes the psychological healthbenefit you receive from knowing you’rehelping others is just as helpful as thephysical health benefit. When you roll upyour sleeve and sit down in that chair, youknow you’re making a difference—and thatmakes you feel good!

It’s time to

Health

Donating blood is safe and easy, and takes lessthan an hour and one blood donation can help asmany as three or four different people! In whatother activity, can so little time do so much?1. Afraid of needles? For many people, the hardest part about decidingto donate blood is overcoming the fear of theneedle stick. Many people actually decide todonate to help get over their fear of needles. Theactual drawing process should cause very little, ifany, discomfort. The finger prick during thepreliminary interview process (required to testyour iron level) is usually the only discomfortencountered by a blood donor.2. Only 5% actually donateOver sixty percent (60%) of the population iseligible to donate blood, yet only five percent(5%) of those eligible actually donate blood.Blood centers nationwide traditionally run intoblood shortages at various times throughout theyear. 3. Blood is perishable Whole blood has a shelf-life of 42 days, whileplatelets (which are used to treat cancer patientsand burn victims) have a shelf- life of only 5 days.It is vitally important to maintain a steady streamof blood donors, in order to ensure the safety andavailability of the blood supply for all of us.4. All blood types are in demandBlood centers often run short of type O, A and Bblood, and shortages of all types of blood occurduring the summer and winter holidays. If allblood donors gave at least twice a year, it wouldhelp to prevent blood shortages.5. Sterile and hygienic processAll equipment used in the blood donation processis sterile and disposable (used only once), andthe needle and related equipment is disposed ofin a specially marked biohazard containerimmediately following the donation. Therefore, there is no chance of any disease by donatingblood.6. Nothing to loseBlood makes up about seven percent (7%) ofyour body’s weight, and the average adult hasapproximately two (2) pints of blood for every 25pounds of body weight. The body is constantlymanufacturing blood, so after your whole blooddonation, you will not be eligible to donate for 56days, during which time your body willcompletely replenish the blood you have sogenerously donated.7. You will not feel weak or faintImmediately after your blood donation, you willalso be asked to spend a few moments in ourcanteen area, where you will be servedrefreshments, cookies and other snacks. This willhelp replenish some of the sugar and liquids inyour body, and help us to ensure that you arefeeling well after your donation.8. You are never too busyIf you, a family member, a co-worker, a neighboror a friend were in need of a blood transfusion, would you want to hear this excuse?Donating blood is safe and easy, and takes lessthan an hour. and one blood donation can help asmany as three or four different people! In whatother activity, can so little time do so much?

WHAT’S YOuR EXCuSE?

donate blood!Somebody, somewhere is struggling for blood to sustain his life rightnow, so if you’re up for doing a good deed, donating blood is aphenomenal choice. More than 41,000 blood donations are neededeach day, and because blood cannot be manufactured, the only way tosupply this need is via generous blood donors. It’s certainly an altruisticact… but it’s also one that offers important yet little-discussed benefits.

Innovate and delightRegardless of category, consumers havelittle problem finding products andservices that work well and are goodenough. Good enough doesn’t stand outfrom the competition, however. Itcertainly doesn’t command a premiumor keep customers returning for more. It’s not enough to ask, does this productor service perform well? The keyquestions are: How does it make thecustomer feel? Does the customer feeljust OK? What would it take to make thecustomer feel delighted?

Be meaningfully differentMany people have a lot of stuff, and muchof it has a sense of sameness. This isn’tnecessarily a criticism. A lot of thesameness is at a high level, a function ofan overall rise in product quality becauseof consumer demand and fiercecompetition. In these circumstances, whenpeople need a clear reason to choose oneproduct or service over the next, beingdifferent becomes more important.Difference defined broadly can be aboutproduct functionality but also about brandexperience and communication.

Stand for a purposeEvery valuable brand needs a purpose. Not every brand needs to make the worlda better place, although aspiring to thatideal is intrinsically a good thing forbrands to do and it can be commerciallysmart. But every brand needs a purposebeyond simply making money. At itsmost basic, that purpose is to have apositive impact on the lives of customers. In a world where a brand’s appeal – bothfunctional and even emotional – oftendoesn’t make it unique, purpose becomesan important differentiator.

Rely on consumer insightsAs big data gets even bigger, it’simportant to remember that connectingthe dots always reveals the samepicture: a human being with basic needsfor survival, protection, relationshipsand meaning. Intelligent consumerinsight is the foundation of success forany brand, big or small. Consumersdon’t want to be treated like a unit in ademographic category. It’s about humanbeings, not algorithms. The combinationof big data and analytics can lead toconsumer insights and a morepersonalized brand interaction with thecustomer. It’s important to know exactlyhow much personalization is acceptable, however, especially as homeautomation and the Internet of Thingspotentially reveal so much more abouthow people live.

Think holisticallyOrganizational siloes impede speed andchange. They make branding moredifficult. Abandon the traditional brandingsiloes in favor of an integrated approach. The flow from research and data gathering, through analytics and insights, to creativeexecution and shopper marketing worksbest when the communication expertscommunicate and collaborate easily witheach other. This kind of “horizontality”works.

Renew and improve thebrand experienceMake the brand experience seamlessfrom the brand promise to productperformance, and delivery to customerservice. The brand experience needs tobe compelling and consistent in both thephysical and online worlds. It needs tofulfill the customer’s desire to dream, explore and find products and services –in a convenient, timeefficient way. Brandexperience is one of the important waysbrands can be different from thecompetition and delight customers.

TOP 40 MOSTVALuABLE GLOBAL

BRANDS 2015

Walk the talkMake the purpose clear both insidethe organization and externally. Alignthe organization behind the purpose.Every member of the organization isa potential brand ambassador.Manifest the purpose in everythingthe brand does. The positive impactthat occurs to a company’s bottomline and Brand Value when itspeople believe in and align around apurpose can be significant.

Build and maintain trustTrusted brands are more likely toenjoy higher Brand Power. Inother words, a trusted brand ismore likely to come to mindwhen the consumer is purchasingin the relevant category. Trustaccrues over time. But trust isfragile. Brand actions today aretransparent. Be honest. Be worthyof the customer’s trust. Addressproblems openly when theyhappen. Demonstrate that thebrand understands any customerconcerns.

Get noticedAs important as it is to do everythingright, it’s also important to get theword out. A strong and genuine brandproposition with a big idea, wellexecuted and creatively communicated, enjoys a multiplier effect that helpsdrive value. Be clear about what thebrand means. Then suffuse that meaning through all parts of theorganization, from the C-suite throughHR and the every other function.Traditional marketing – promotion, sales and distribution – will remainimportant, but part of a larger mix ofactivities, which increasingly willinvolve digital and social media.

Keep changingOnce the brand is sufficientlydifferent and purposeful and beingimplemented throughout theorganization and communicatedexternally in a coherent, consistent, and effective fashion – it’s time tochange. Branding is a process withno end. It moves as fast asconsumers change – in the bestcases even faster. Successful brandbuilders are always unsatisfied. They’re always chasing the future.

Shoulders &Arm Exercises8. The FlapperStanding with arms by yoursides and palms facing behind, pulse the arms backward for 5seconds. Release and repeatfor 12-15 reps. For best results, make sure to keep the armslong and straight!

9. The Casual LeanWaiting in the hall for ameeting to start? Perfect time

to nonchalantly work out theupper arms! Casually leanagainst the nearest wall, supporting your body with theforearm only. Now lean intothe wall until the upper armalmost touches it, and thenpush back out. Repeat for 15reps or until the meeting getsunderway.

10. The Stapler CurlPick out a heavy object like abig stapler or a bottle of water.Seated or standing, take theobject in one hand with thepalm facing upwards. Startingat the thighs, bend the elbowand curl the arm up towardsthe chest, just like a regulardumbbell biceps curl. Pausemomentarily and then lowerthe the object back down.Continue for 12-15 reps, thenswitch.

11. The Secret HandshakeSitting up and with feet flat onthe floor, clasp hands togetheras if giving yourself ahandshake (with one hand’sthumb pointing to the floor andthe other pointing to theceiling). Then pull! Resist themotion of both arms (youshould definitely feel this inthose biceps). Hold for 10seconds or more, release, andrepeat.

12. The Casual LeanWaiting in the hall for ameeting to start? Perfect timeto nonchalantly work out theupper arms! Casually leanagainst the nearest wall, supporting your body with theforearm only. Now lean intothe wall until the upper armalmost touches it, and thenpush back out. Repeat for 15reps or until the meeting getsunderway.

Chest, Back &Neck exercises13. The Shoulder ShrugSimply raise both shoulders uptoward the ears, hold for 5seconds, then relax. Repeat for15 reps. Feeling unstoppable?Try advanced shoulder shrugswhile standing and holding apaper ream in each hand.

15. The Pinstripe Push-upThis slightly modified wallpush-up is more suitable forsuits. Standing one to two feetfrom a sturdy wall (not acubicle divider!), lean forwarduntil palms are flush againstthe wall, with arms straightand parallel to the ground.Next, bend the elbows to bringthe body towards the wall, hold for two seconds, thenpush back to the startingposition. Complete 12-15 reps.

16. The Nape ShaperPut your head in your hands asif exasperated by the workdayand press your palms into yourforehead as if trying to pushthe head backward. As a small girl, I used to visit mygrandma back in her village in Nashik duringsummer holidays often playing with mycousins and neighborhood children. Whenmy grandma wasn’t at home, we playedinside the house as it was very hot outside. While playing inside we used to play with allthe household items and when anopportunity presented itself inbetween games, I didn’tmiss the chance tosneak into mygrandma’skitchen stand ona chair andreach thecookie jar, where shewould keepthe ladoos to begiven to the“good girl” or the“good boy”. Forobvious reasons, myturn didn’t comeeasily to get theladoo, but I had myways. When mygrandma returnedfrom work, sheused to get veryupset as we messup her house andmore so reduceher stock ofladoos. Then shecame up with anidea to lock herhouse , whenevershe left for work and send all of us to thenearby shade of a big banyan tree , wherewe can get as dusty as we wanted. One lockdid the trick…Needless to say all her securitywas invested in one key.As I grew up, I could see my dad add threemore keys on top of the key for the house;one for the bike, one for the trunk, keptunder the bed and one for the Almirah, where my mom kept her jewelry. As I started going to college, I addedpassword to my mobile, my ATM card and

my email id.Now, we have almost 10 different keys and20 different passwords. We have becomeslaves of insecurity and greed. Life haschanged. Today, there are so many passwords that, it’shard to remember our them all. The issuegets complicated, when the mode of

unlocking the password differs from oneto another. Not to mention of the

fact that passwords expire attimes.

There are finger printreaders in laptops, dongle keys whichgenerate automatickeys and which thencan be used alongwith timedependent

passwords. Not many of us realize

what we do to just totransfer funds in banks….

Switch on the laptop, provide power-onpassword to enterthe windows, provide the windowspassword, run ourfingers on the reader.Once we open thebrowser, and go thebank website, weare asked togenerate a variablepassword that isgenerated using thepassword we know.

And there is this captcha, that we need toaccurately fill. Once we get to our bankaccount and try to transfer our money, thewebsite tells us to provide the ‘one time’password that comes to our mobile phone. We open our phone using a password, checkour SMS and type this password in the bankwebsite. But the money does not gettransferred, instantly, we wait…IT has brought in so much of insecurity in ourlives. Just think, back 20 years and then thinkwhere we will be in the next 20 years..

Pass the Word...A group ofalumni, highlyestablished intheir careers, got together to visittheir old university professor. Conversationsoon turned into complaints about stressin work and life.

Offering his guests coffee, the professorwent to the kitchen and returned with alarge pot of coffee and an assortment ofcups - porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite ones.

Telling them to help themselves to hotcoffee. When all the students had a cup ofcoffee in hand, the professor said: "If younoticed, all the nice looking expensivecups were taken up, leaving behind theplain and cheap ones. While it is normalfor you to want only the best foryourselves, that tends to be the source ofyour problems and stress.

What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went forthe best cups and were eyeing eachother's cups. Now if life is coffee, then thejobs, money and position in society arethe cups. They are just tools to hold andcontain Life, but the quality of Life doesn'tchange. Sometimes, by concentrating onlyon the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee init."

So, what drives you? Coffee or cup?Think about it.... & enjoy your cup ofCoffee....

Twenty years from now you will be moredisappointed by the things that you didn’tdo than by the ones you did do, so throw

off the bowlines, sail away from safeharbor, catch the trade winds in your sails.

Explore, Dream, Discover.
