The Diocese of Fall River

Our bishop has provided us with an energetic call to action this year. Since his installation in September of 2014, he has made it a point to

visit parishes and schools throughout the diocese. His inspiring message and positive outlook frames this year’s Catholic Charities Appeal. The feedback on the bishop’s message and the favorable reviews of this year’s Appeal videos has given us strong momentum as we have launched the campaign. The ef-forts of hundreds of volunteers who have prepared for the start of this year’s Catholic Charities Appeal are greatly appreciated. The parish reports have begun coming into the Appeal office, reporting the first 14 days from this year’s Appeal. It is the beginning of an eight-week period when the attention of our parishioners and the broader community will be focused on the need to help our neighbors and discovering how much each parish community can do to increase both the dollars raised and the number of donors from among parishioners. “All of us have been inspired by the bishop’s call to give generously and to imagine abundance,” said Jim Campbell, the Director of Development for the Appeal. “Our strong cadre of donors throughout the diocese personifies this spirit. Our goal is to encourage new donors and retain loyal supporters each year. We had in excess of 31,000 donors from parishes last year. Bishop Edgar da Cunha, S.D.V., has asked us to imagine what good could be done if the donor base was to reach 40,000 or 50,000. We very much want to celebrate that level of generosity and highlight the many ways we bring Christ’s message of upholding human dignity to everyone in our daily lives. This can only happen if our regular supporters continue or increase their support — as so many do each year — and encourage others to join and discover the joy of giving.” The Catholic Charities website, www.frdioc-catholiccharities.org, is intended to offer as much information as possible to those who might be considering donat-ing for the first time. We also encourage those pursuing information regarding the services offered and those in need of services or looking for direction and guidance, to an agency or apostolate that may assist them, to visit the site. Along with the Ap-peal video, the Appeal brochure, Bishop da Cunha’s audio message, and SHARING, the Appeal newsletter, the site contains the financial summary of the 2014 Appeal’s revenues and disbursements. The site also offers visitors the opportunity to donate or pledge by using their credit card. People who are considering donating for the first time should be assured that their hard-earned money is being wisely and prudently applied to ministries and

apostolates of the Fall River Diocese. The Catholic Charities Appeal is efficient and careful with every dollar donated. That is certainly something that first-time donors want to know and must know in order to make an informed charitable decision. We are proud of the loyalty and trust our donors and the wider community of corporate and foundation supporters have in our ability to provide vital services for the poor, the homeless, and those in our neighborhoods who, for one reason or another, need a helping hand. These dollars touch every part of the diocese — from the Pastoral Care for the Sick to the Faith Formation programs that benefit our youth and adults in search of solace. The overall message — whether through the website, printed media, or by sim-ple conversation among the faithful — is a way for us to convey that our Catho-lic faith compels us to serve our brothers and sisters. Being a part of the Catholic Charities Appeal is a redeeming and responsible way to help. The 74th Annual Catholic Charities Appeal began on May 1 and will continue until June 30.
