THE SECOND SUNDAY IN MARCH triggersDaylight Saving Time, when we “springahead” and set our clocks one hourahead or forward.

That’s also the best day to change thebatteries in smoke alarms and carbonmonoxide detectors—even if the batter-ies aren’t dead.

If you don’t have fire alarms and COdetectors, your family is at risk. Thealarms sound loudly if smoke or gas ispresent in your home so you can get out.

Carbon monoxide is a clear, odorlessgas that is deadly but difficult to detect. Ifyou don’t have an alarm, it’s unlikely thatyou will know if your home has a CO leak.

Carbon monoxide doesn’t come justfrom cars. Your gas furnace or stove is apotential source of the gas fumes. TheU.S. Environmental Protection Agencyoffers these tips for poison prevention:a Keep gas appliances properly

adjusted.a Use electric space heaters, not gas

space heaters.a Install an exhaust fan, vented to the

outdoors, over a gas stove.a Open flues when wood-burning fire-

places are in use. a Have a trained professional inspect,

clean and tune up all components ofyour heating system annually. Repairleaks promptly.

a Do not idle your car inside the garage.

HEART OF TEXAS ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE works hard to provide our members withreliable and safe electric service at the lowest possible cost. When someone tamperswith the electric meter or lines, they are stealing from our members and from theco-op, and adding to the cost of providing electricity.

What Is Meter Tampering?Meter tampering is when someone illegally hooks up to a power supply, self-connectsa meter that has been disconnected, or tampers with a meter so that it does not accu-rately record electricity usage.

Some of the signs of meter tampering include a damaged or missing meter coveror seal and/or extra wires attached in or around the meter.

Deliberate meter tampering or attempts to divert service with intent to not payconstitutes theft of energy. This type of activity is a crime that can lead to a fine and/or a prison sentence. Most importantly, it can cause harm to innocent people.

Those who tamper with the meters may think that the worst thing that can hap-pen if they’re caught is that their service will be disconnected, but that is not true. They can expect a visit from the local law enforcement agency, and the co-op iswithin its right to pursue any criminal complaint procedure available under the law.

Before reconnection of any service disconnected for meter tampering, currentdiversion, or unauthorized reconnection of service, the consumer will be requiredto pay for damages to the cooperative equipment resulting from the tampering, provide a sufficient deposit to cover future tampering or damage, and pay an amountestimated to cover service used or service received.

Safety ConcernHowever, meter tampering and elec-tricity theft is more than just a crime. It is also a safety concern.

Heart of Texas EC seals all of itsmeters for a reason—the same reasonyou have locks on your doors. Thisseal is meant to protect the member, the general public and employees.

”It is very important that allmeters remain sealed and secure,”Member Services Manager Ron Pos-ton says. “When seals, meters orother equipment are tampered with,it is not only illegal, but extremelydangerous.”

The seal keeps out people who have no business opening the meter. No one hasany business opening it except employees of Heart of Texas EC and electrical con-tractors with co-op permission.

Improperly sealed meters can cause a fire at the meter or inside the house, orelectrical shock to anyone who comes into contact with it. Electricity thieves canalso unknowingly feed energy back into the power line, making it dangerous forlinemen who may assume that the power line they are working on is de-energized.

Heart of Texas EC offers a $250 reward for reporting verified meter tampering. If you learn that a neighbor or acquaintance is tampering with an electric meter, orare concerned that a meter has been tampered with, report it immediately by calling1-800-840-2957. You could save someone’s life.

WE USE ELECTRICITY IN OUR HOMES THROUGHOUT THE DAY, but we rarely think abouthow it gets to the wall outlets or switches. Distribution lines deliver electricity tohomes and most commonly connect to a house through a service drop. The electric-ity goes through the meter box to the service panel. The service panel, often called abreaker box, is where breakers and fuses protect the wires inside your house fromelectrical overload.

With so much electricity funneling out of the breaker box through the rest of thehome to your outlets and switches, it is important to know how to use a breaker boxsafely.

Arc-fault circuit interrupters are installed directly in the breaker box and aredesigned to protect against fires caused by arcing faults in home electrical wiring.

Arcing faults can be triggeredby overloaded circuits, dam-aged wires, cracked wire insu-lation, loose or improperconnections, faulty electricalequipment or overheated elec-trical wires.

An AFCI monitors currentflow and can distinguishbetween normal, working arcsand unwanted, dangerous arcs. When an unwanted arcing con-dition is detected, it shutsdown the circuit immediately. It is important to note thatAFCIs do not provide protec-tion against all of the possiblecircuit faults that can causefires, but they are a significantstep forward in electrical firesafety. Contact a qualified elec-trician to have them installed.

If an appliance is malfunc-tioning, if there is another electrical malfunction in your home, or if the circuitbreaker flipped during a power outage, it may be necessary to cut off or switch on thepower at the breaker box. If you must flip a switch at the breaker box, always remem-ber to step away and look away. Protect your eyes and body just in case an arc shouldoccur.

Never attempt to turn off power at the breaker box if you must stand in water todo so. If you touch the breaker box while wet or while standing in water, it couldcause electric shock or death. If you cannot reach your breaker box safely, call yourelectric cooperative to shut off power at the meter.

Be sure to call a qualified electrician if blowing fuses or tripping circuit breakersare a recurring problem. This means there is something wrong with your electricalsystem, and it needs to be inspected.
