Our journey
Set in 240 acres of beautiful parkland, bordered by the Rivers Maine and Braid, Galgorm Castle has a rich and mysterious past. We consider it an honour and a duty to protect the exceptional character of the estate by introducing new and exciting business ventures to its historic grounds, creating a unique experience for client, customer and visitor.
Built in the early 17th century by Sir Faithful Fortescue, the Castle is one of the foremost examples of Jacobean architecture in Ireland. The Courtyard, to the west of the Castle, was built in the 1830s and includes the original grooms’ cottages, stables, coach houses and a mill formerly driven by a 20-foot cast-iron waterwheel, overlooked by a magnificent 30-foot bell tower.
During the 1980s, the yard was restored to its former glory, a mammoth undertaking given the chronic state of disrepair into which it had lapsed. Working in close collaboration with the Historic Monuments and Buildings Branch of the Department of the Environment, the interiors were renovated to the highest of standards, recognised
by a series of awards including the Civic Trust Award, the Business Environmental Award and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors Award for Building Restoration in 1993. The original courtyard is regarded as one of Northern Ireland’s most prestigious business and craft centres.
The championship golf course was constructed in 1995 and opened in 1997. It is listed in John Redmond’s book: “Ireland’s Finest Courses” as one of the top-30 courses in Ireland and has hosted three PGA EuroPro Tour events and is currently home to the Northern Ireland Open on the European Challenge Tour.
The Garden Centre opened in early 2014 in the Kitchen Garden of the Castle. This entailed the restoration of the imposing, but badly dilapidated original walls, and covers an area of two-acres, attracting 150,000 visitors a year.
In addition to Phase 2 of the Courtyard, a Himalayan Putting Course and a Pitch and Putt Course are under construction, due to open in 2015.
