The new STEMI program expands that service for people having the most dangerous type of heart attack, an ST-elevation myocardial infarction or STEMI. A STEMI means blood flow to the heart is completely blocked. “A STEMI is a life or death situation; patients are experiencing an acute, active heart attack,” says Tharen Leesch, manager of the Heart and Vascular Center. “When you hear of someone dying from a massive heart attack, most likely it’s a STEMI.” In order to provide this high level of care, SFBH began laying the groundwork for the new program more than a year ago by adding a second cardiac catheterization lab, educating the nursing team and other hospital staff members and collaborating with the medical staff to create the service. Last spring, the hospital opened the new Charles and Betty Grimes Critical Care Center, another important component for adding a STEMI service, since patients may need to be admitted to an intensive care unit after their procedure. The hospital also had to demonstrate expertise in cardiac catheterizations and meet the national standards for performing 300 or more procedures. Treatment for a STEMI involves balloon angioplasty and stenting, which opens blood flow to the heart and is performed in a cath lab. Adding a second cardiac catheterization lab was critical. Previously, SFBH had only one lab, which was used by cardiologists and interventional radiologists to perform heart and vascular procedures. he Steve and Krista Howard Heart and Vascular Center Expands Cardiac Services for SFBH Heart Patients CORNERSTONE the continued on page 2

South Florida Baptist Hospital has reached a major milestone in cardiac care with the launch of a new service that offers life-saving treatment to Plant City area residents. The new program allows the hospital to immediately take care

of patients having a particular kind of heart attack, rather than transferring them by Bayflite helicopter or ambulance to another facility some distance away.

“The new program represents an immense step forward in our ability to deliver comprehensive heart services. With the exception of open-heart surgery, we’re now prepared for any cardiac-related issue that may arise,” says Beth Tancredo, SFBH director of Operations. “We’re very excited to extend this level of service to the community.”

Fast Treatment for STEMI South Florida Baptist Hospital has been diagnosing heart disease and treating patients for many years in the Jim and Ruby Jean Redman Emergency Center and the Steve and Krista Howard Heart and Vascular Center, which opened in 2010.

“Having a second cardiac catheterization lab gives us more flexibility and allows us to take care of multiple procedures simultaneously. Most importantly, it means we can take care of an emergency STEMI without any delay,” says Ghazanfar Khadim, MD. “Our goal is to deliver better outcomes for patients in our community, and with this program, we can significantly reduce the time from when patients first arrive at the hospital to when we can begin treatment in the lab.”

Enormous PreparationPreparing for the STEMI program has been a huge undertaking, says Teri Colletti, ARNP, SFBH director of Patient Services. “I’m proud to say that we may be small in size, but we’re mighty in that we’re always striving to deliver that next level of care to the same degree you’d expect at any large medical center,” says Colletti.

For Brooke Shepard, MD, director of the SFBH Emergency Department, the new program represents the opportunity to bring nationally recognized technology locally so patients don’t have to leave Plant City for treatment. “We can take care of patients here, close to family and friends where they are most comfortable,” says Dr. Shepard. “It’s one more example of how the hospital is committed to providing the highest level of care for the community.”

Danita Allen, RN, manager of the SFBH Emergency Department, agrees. “SFBH is no longer just a small town community hospital. We can provide a multitude of services and we’re excited about adding a program we didn’t have before.”

Physicians and Team Member Campaigns

Each year in June and July, the physicians and team members at SFBH participate in a giving campaign. The hospital physicians participated in their second annual

campaign and surpassed their inaugural year by raising 50 percent more than the previous year. We’re very pleased with the growth in giving and financial support from our doctors.

Team members have been participating in the campaign for more than 20 years. This year’s goal was to reach $80,000. And because of 90 percent participation, they

beat the goal by raising $80,111.93. All the funds raised will be used to grow and expand the hospital’s many programs and services. “Our team member’s level of participation is unmatched in BayCare, and their generosity is driven by their dedication to the hospital,” says Karen Kerr, president of South Florida Baptist Hospital.

The 20th Annual Diamonds & Denim

Held September 22 at the Charlie Grimes and Family Agricultural Center, this annual event brought together over 650 community guests to celebrate and support

the hospital Foundation. Only three rules apply: Dress in your best jeans, eat some fantastic food, and visit with all your friends and neighbors. And you can shop a little too, if you like. Over $104,000 was raised at the event. Mark your calendars for September 28, 2017. You won’t want to miss it.

Lights of Love

Lights of Love has been kicking off the Christmas season in Plant City for 18 years. On December 1, the

event had more than 500 people watch the ever-exciting tree lighting in McCall Park in downtown Plant City. Santa Claus and the Mrs. were available for pictures with the youngest in the town, performances by NRG (Next Radical Generation) and First Baptist Church’s Praise Team and Children’s Choir were heartwarming and showed what Christmas is all about, and the SFBH Food and Nutrition team provided yummy treats for all. Proceeds were in excess of $30,000 to support the hospitals programs, services and outreach departments.

Save the Date

The Children’s Classic Golf Tournament has a new home for 2017. The annual event, on April

28, will be held at the Diamond Hill Golf Club on Sydney Road in Dover. The event is co-sponsored by South Florida Baptist Hospital, the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis Club of Plant City. The monies raised are to fund the SFBH Wellness on Wheels Mobile Unit (see the program overview on page 13), local children's programs, charities, events and scholarships. We’re looking for 144 players who want to have a great time and support our community. Sponsorships are available. If you’re interested, contact Jana Butler at (813) 757-8478.

ommunity Outreach for Over 20 YearsFrom blood pressure, diabetes and heart health screenings to skin cancer checks, CPR, flu shots, bike safety and much more, the Community Health Department, including the Wellness on Wheels (WOW) bus, is busy.

Last year, the program served 6,017 children and adults in the greater Plant City community and over 2,900 elementary and middle school students. A team of 11 wellness

professionals, coordinated by Heather Coats, SFBH Community Health program coordinator, goes to churches, schools and community events to offer health-related wellness services. They also provide corporate wellness services.

“We love going out into the community to provide health education and wellness programs,” says Coats. “We take a lot of pride in what we do, knowing it makes a difference.”

This past summer, Emmanuel Seventh Day Adventist Church in Plant City presented the team a plaque for “continued dedication to community health needs at the church and surrounding community.” “It was very heartwarming to receive this acknowledgement,” says Coats. “It’s why we do what we do.”

Focus on Schools

A special area of focus is the department’s partnership with Hillsborough County Area 6 schools to bring vision, scoliosis, height and weight screenings to local students.

In addition, Coats is the site coordinator for the Plant City Back-to-School Fair, which provides free school immunizations and physicals to any new Hillsborough County students, and backpacks filled with school supplies to all students who attend the fair.

The team’s main territory includes east Hillsborough and Polk counties. It’s easy to spot them when they bring along the 37-foot Winnebago, the “WOW” bus that serves as a mobile clinic. Last December, the SFBH Foundation helped fund an interior upgrade of the bus with new wood floors, a more efficient and expanded workspace, and new cabinetry.

Grateful for Funding

The majority of funding for the free programs offered by Community Health comes from the Children’s Golf Classic, an annual Plant City golf tournament held in the spring

(see page 5 for details). “The golf tournament is very important in helping us continue these programs,” says Coats. “We greatly appreciate the community’s ongoing support.”

Coats is already planning for 2017, with expanded outreach programs and new partnerships with Plant City area community organizations that support underserved populations. She hopes to add programs related to disease prevention and obesity. “SFBH Community Health looks forward to continuing to grow our outreach efforts and building more community relationships to meet the needs of the community in 2017 and beyond,” says Coats.

Rhonda Harvey, RN, takes a student’s blood pressure at the back-to-school event.

Members of the WOW team celebrate the remodeling of the bus.

Heather Coats receives a plaque for Community Health's dedication to the community.

21st Century Electronic Telemedicine Raises Level of Care

A second pair of eyes is how Teri Colletti, ARNP, SFBH director of Patient Services, describes the new eICU technology that’s adding another level of safety, security

and medical expertise for critical care patients at South Florida Baptist Hospital. “It’s like having a physician in the unit with us every single night, which for the nursing staff is an enormous advantage when we’re caring for very sick patients,” says Colletti. “It’s an amazing state-of-the-art program that really puts us at the top level of care.”

What Is the eICU Technology? Sometimes called a virtual ICU, the eICU is an electronic telemedicine program that allows health care professionals to view and monitor patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week from a remote location. Although the eICU is much more high tech and sophisticated than Skype, it’s similar. With Skype, friends, loved ones and coworkers can use a computer monitor to see each other while they’re talking – whether they’re next door or in another country. At SFBH, the eICU allows a special team of BayCare physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners to observe ICU patients remotely from an office in Clearwater. The BayCare team supplements the care from the SFBH ICU nurses by offering additional medical expertise as needed.

Close-Up Observation “Our ICU nurses can push a button to be connected with the BayCare team any time there’s a question or concern, or if a patient needs more intensive observation,” says Danette Lee, RN, SFBH manager of critical care. “The technology is so advanced that the video cameras can go in close enough for the BayCare team to check the name on the patient’s wristband, just as if they were standing at the bedside.”

Last fall, each patient room in the ICU was wired with eICU technology, which includes a wall-mounted monitor and video camera. The new technology is also wired into machines monitoring patients’ vital signs for oxygen levels, blood pressure and other bodily functions.

During the night shift, the eICU technology is especially helpful. “The nurses really appreciate it because they always have a physician to turn to immediately for a consultation,” says Colletti. “We no longer need to call physicians in the middle of the night and wake them up, or wait for them to call us back when a situation is urgent.” In addition, says Colletti, “if a patient needs labs, X-rays,

a central line insertion or change of medication, the BayCare doctor can go ahead and order it right then. They can even take charge if a code is called and an on-site physician isn’t available.”

SFBH physicians also appreciate the new technology. “They can rest knowing their patients are in good hands,” says Colletti. “In the morning, the BayCare team gives them a full report.” South Florida Baptist Hospital was among the first in BayCare to implement the eICU this past fall. It’s expected to be rolled out to all BayCare hospitals by the end of the year.

Some people with the most to give never do. Why? They leave one simple thing undone: They never write a will. Over 50 percent of Americans pass away without a will. That leaves it up to the courts to decide how to distribute their assets. But you’ve worked hard to achieve what you have, whether it’s a little or a lot, and you deserve the right to say what happens to it. A will gives you the control you deserve. Writing a will isn’t difficult and it’s well worth the time. It’s also a great opportunity to leave a legacy gift to organizations you care about – like South Florida Baptist Hospital. Interested? Contact us today for more information about how you can make a gift that endures for future generations. Because of you, we’re going places. Thank you.

We’re pleased to announce the development and implementation of our new website in 2017. Soon our donors will be able to donate, register for events and receive updated Foundation information through our web page. Stay tuned!

In December 2015 and 2016, Plant City PetSmart has donated over 1,000 stuffed animals for our smallest of patients. During a charity drive at the store, customers can purchase a stuffed dog or cat and then donate it to a local charity selected by the store. The proceeds benefit a local animal shelter, while the stuffed animals benefit pediatric patients at South Florida Baptist Hospital. The stuffed animals are given to children through the surgery center, Emergency Department, labor and delivery, and the pediatric unit. Thank you, PetSmart, for choosing SFBH. Smiles are the best medicine!
