AA27202 AVRO VULCAN B2, XL321, 617 SQUADRON, RAF SCAMPTON, LINCOLNSHIRE, 1964 The Avro Vulcan was a British delta wing subsonic bomber operated by the Royal Air Force from 1953 until 1984. The Vulcan was part of the RAF’s V bomber force, which fulfilled the role of nuclear deterrent against the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Arguably the most famous RAF squadron, No.617 was formed in 1943 at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire. Commonly known as “The Dambusters” due to its successful attack on the German dams in May 1943, the Squadron operated the famous Vulcan bombers throughout the Cold War. AA27602 HAWKER HURRICANE MKI, P3120, 303 POLISH SQN, FLYING OFFICER Z K HENNEBERG, NORTHOLT, SEPTEMBER 1940 Although the Spitfire is celebrated as Britain’s saviour during the Battle of Britain, it was the trusty Hawker Hurricane that inflicted most of the damage on the Luftwaffe. Indeed, the Hurricane destroyed more enemy aircraft than all of Britain’s other defences combined. In the hands of a capable pilot, the trusty Hurricane was a lethal adversary. AA36509 HAWKER TYPHOON IB, 247 (CHINA-BRITISH) SQN, NO.124 WING, 2ND TAF, RAF EINDHOVEN, DECEMBER 1944 The Hawker Typhoon was something of a low-level airborne battering ram and was to take a withering toll of German armour in the last months of WWII. This particular aircraft was flown by former Battle of Britain ‘Ace’ Sqn. Ldr. Basil Gerald ‘Stapme’ Stapleton and featured some distinctive fuselage artwork. REAL Vs

I PURCHASED THE CAR IN 2005 and it was my third Vauxhall Cavalier, but my first Turbo Cavalier. Previously I had owned a SRi (2litre 8v) and I progressed from that to a Cavalier GSI2000 (2litre 16v). Sadly the GSI was involved in an accident which saw it written off. I decided at this point that I wanted to get the Cavalier that I had always wanted, Cavalier Turbo 4x4. Although these cars are rare, a friend of mine told me of one that was up for sale and it was also local, I contacted the owner via email and from there I went out to see the car. Initially he wasn’t looking to sell but after a little persuasion I managed to convince him. The car itself was in a dire state with what looked like the results of a lot of abuse tied in with some questionable ‘modification’. My plan was to restore the car back to the standard look that it was supposed to have and despite my misgivings about its condition, I decided to buy the car (if not only to save it from the current circumstances a bit like rescuing a dog from a bad owner). Once I had the car in my ownership I wasted no time in stripping it down removing all the crazy modifications

and fixing parts that had been bodged rather than sorted. It became apparent quite quickly that this car has been neglected with cut springs, a fuel pump held on with tie-wraps, flaking paint, half machine buffed engine cover, rust everywhere and wiring that was cut and sensors that has been twisted together to stop dashboard warning lights coming on. Over the ensuing years the car was transformed with a lot of modification work mainly focussed on performance such as a full sports suspension system with correct springs, Scorpion stainless steel exhaust system, rebuilt K16 hybrid turbo charger, twin core aluminium radiator, Forge Type08 intercooler, 2.75” intercooler pipework, braided water, oil and fuel lines, Apexi AVC-R electronic boost controller with real time information, Enlarge top hat, enlarged stainless steel downpipe, ARP conrod bolts, ARP head studs, Coscast cylinder head (Cosworth) and Phase 2 EDS ECU map to name but a few. As I previously mentioned I wanted to restore the car to the OEM look and she was far away from that when I got

it with large 18” alloy wheels that didn’t really suit, over sized bumper, dark window tints, missing badges and cut springs making the car sit far too low. The car was put in for a re-spray in the same diamond black colour it came out the factory with and was treated to a set of original wheels which I refurbished. With the help of Autovaux and online Vauxhall communities I sourced all the original badges some of which were no longer available and badged her up as it was originally intended. The shoddy wiring was ripped out and I repaired the entire engine loom with fresh wiring and fresh trunking. All the sensors and systems were working once again. Last year (June) I set off in my Cavalier Turbo on the Modball Rally which went from London - Paris - Lyon - Barcelona - Valencia - Denia and Ibiza. The car didn’t just make it there and back it did it with style, it never missed a beat, not a single engine management light or error of any kind. This was a real ego boost for me and really warmed my heart by showing me what my 10 years of hard work had achieved. I am so very proud that it did so well.

VA13106A Vauxhall Cavalier Mk3 Turbo Diamond Black RHDConscious of the Sierra Cosworth’s success, Vauxhall launched a high-performance four-wheel-drive version of the Cavalier in 1992. Well equipped, but subtle and discreet, it was not as overtly sporting as the Cosworth but matched its pace and traction whilst undercutting Ford’s market leader by several thousand pounds. However, it never sold as well as expected, perhaps because it was a later addition to the market and had no motorsport pedigree. Rare today, the example modelled is owned by Cavalier Turbo Owners Club organiser Allan Kendall from Aberdeen and has spent its entire life in Scotland. Allan has carried out comprehensive restoration work since acquiring it in 2005 including undoing some poorly executed performance modifications. BATTLE OF BRITAIN75TH ANNIVERSARYTo commemorate this historic aerial battle, Corgi presents a range of model aircraft that fought in the skies over the Channel and South East England between July and September 1940 during which time a total of 1,750 RAF and Luftwaffe aircraft were lost.

ROYAL VISITOur friends at the National Memorial to the Few at Capel-le-Ferne, near Folkestone in Kent, enjoyed a royal unveiling of their new visitor and education centre, The Wing, earlier

this year. The building, which is shaped like a wing of a Spitfire, complete with that famous dihedral, was opened by Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. The Queen waved to the crowd from the balcony of the £3.5m visitor centre, which features The Scramble Experience, a high-tech audio-visual extravaganza designed to tell the tale of the Battle of Britain and the men who fought it.A central ‘cockpit’ café area on the first floor leads to a balcony on which the Queen and Prince Philip stood and offers superb views across the Channel to France, from where the Luftwaffe would have appeared in 1940. A special piece of technology will allow visitors to look through binoculars at the view as it is today and then ‘see’ incoming German aircraft approaching.

WHAT’S ON...On a number of occasions throughout the summer, the Action Stations! company flies passengers in a fixed wing aircraft alongside a Battle of Britain fighter in the skies above the white cliffs. The National Memorial to the Few site offers a great viewing point on these occasions, which take place this year as follows:

IF YOU ARE LOOKING for an excellent fun and action packed day out for all the family, you’ll love the Great Dorset Steam Fair. Traditionally this English fair is held at the village of Tarrant Hinton, near Blandford Forum in

the heart of the beautiful Dorset countryside. Further directions are superfluous. Just find the village on the map, head in that direction and follow everyone else! From small beginnings this annual event has become one of the favoured places for those interested in how people lived, worked and played in bygone years and it is now widely recognised as “THE” National Heritage Show as well as being regarded as the leading show of its type in the World. The spectacle covers an enormous showground, at over 600 acres being one of Europe’s largest outdoor event locations. 2015 sees the show in its 47th year and will take place from 2nd – 6th September inclusive. If its heritage related, you’ll find it. You can stand amazed at the variety of exhibitions and the sheer scale of the show means that there is always something new to see. For the first time visitor seeing the Great Dorset Steam Fair can be quite an awe inspiring and impressive site, a sea of marquees and attractions that can take your breath for a moment. Once on site you can watch the steaming giants of the past being put through their paces; some hauling huge loads, others sawing planks or doing the farm work of long ago, such as driving ploughs, threshing or baling. One of the main features is the old time steam driven funfair. Annually, over 50 showmen’s engines with their gleaming twisted brass can be seen generating the light and power for the old carousels and swingboats to operate. This makes for a fascinating spectacle especially at night where the venue transforms into a magical, electric city. To add

to the excitement several of the large fair organs in the main outdoor entertainment area are fronted by authentic 1920’s style stage shows with traditional “Can Can” dancing girl performances and other acts. Vintage, veteran and classic cars, lorries, military vehicles, tractors, motorcycles and bikes all find a

place in the cavalcade and if it’s possible to fight your way through the crowds to the bottom showfield, you’ll find the working heavy horses. Country crafts from thatchers to cider makers and memorabilia collections of all kinds are also well represented. Over 500 trade stands provide an endless variety of goods to purchase. There are also four massive entertainment pavilions and an outdoor concert stage area, each with its own programme of live music and its own range of national and local ales/beers. Dine at one of the splendid food stalls across the showground which offer both fast foods and delicacies from a wide choice of traditional and exotic meals or snacks; or you may prefer a rustic cheese ploughmans while sampling the delights of a local cider.

WE ARE COMMEMORATING THE CENTENARY anniversary of the First World War with our own WW1 tribute display. The display will feature an authentic replica Western Front trench system together with steam and historic vehicles from the 1914-1918 conflict. First shown at the 2014 Great Dorset Steam Fair, the WW1 display will remain in place until the 2018 Great Dorset Steam Fair to coincide with the hundredth anniversary of the Armistice. It’s not all old time! For our younger visitors take a white knuckle ride on one of the country’s biggest travelling modern funfairs. Rides expected include a Giant Wheel, Log Flume, Spinning Roller Coaster, Drop Tower and Reverse Bungee. And our Stunt Arena will feature fantastic displays from the International Big Pete Monster Truck Display Team and world class quad bike stuntman, the Kangaroo Kid, from Brisbane, Australia. The Great Dorset Steam Fair is a typically British event offering a unique blend of nostalgia and entertainment. It is the World’s largest heritage and cultural event showcasing our national industrial, agricultural and leisure history. Come and soak up the special festival atmosphere whether as a day visitor or taking in the full five days by camping on site. There is no other event like it anywhere in the world which is why over 200,000 visitors attend each year from both the UK and abroad. Visit this colourful show once and you’ll be hooked for life. You must go! Please visit our website www.gdsf.co.uk for full details or contact the Show Office on 01258 860361 for a brochure.
