HISTORY OF THE GRAND LODGESPOTLIGHT ON FRANCIS MARION ZUCK 1902 GRAND MASTER OF ARIZONAFrancis Marion Zuck was born in Greenburg, Pennsylvania, July 21, 1838, and died in Holbrook, Arizona on the 1th day of June, 1909. The Judge having suffered a stoke causing paralysis.

MASONIC EDUCATIONThe Old Master by Carl Claudy- 1924The Ideal Mason"So you think Brother Parkes is an ideal Mason, do you?" asked the Old Past Master of the Young Brother. "I like Brother Parkes, but before I gave assent to your adjective of 'ideal' I'd like to have you define it.“ "What I meant" answered the Younger Brother "was that he is so well rounded a Mason. He is Brotherly, charitable, loves a good speech and a good time, and does his Masonic duty as he sees it.“ "Oh! Well, if that's being an ideal Mason, Parkes is surely one. But I can't follow your definition of ideal. For there are so many ideals in Freemasonry, and it has been given to few...I doubt, really, if it hasbeen given to any...man to realize them all. Certainly I never knew one. "There are so many kinds of Masons! I do not refer now to the various bodies a brother may join; Chapter, Council, Commandery, Scottish Rite Lodge, Chapter, Council, Consistory, Shrine, Grotto, Tall Cedars, Eastern Star; a man may belong to them all and still be just one kind of Mason."When I speak of 'kinds' of Masons I mean 'kinds of ideals'."There is the man whose ideal of Masonry is ritual. He believes in the ritual as the backbone of the fraternity. Not to be letter perfect in a degree is an actual pain to him; he cares more for the absolute accuracy of the lessons than the meaning in them. His ideal is a necessary one, and to him we are indebted for our Schools of Instruction, for our accuracy in handing down to those who come after us, the secret work, and to a large extent, for what small difficulties we put in the way of a candidate, by which he conceives a regard for the Order. What is too easily obtained is of small value. Making a new Mason learn by rote some difficult ritual not only teaches him the essential lessons, but makes him respect that which he gets by making it difficult.

MASONIC EDUCATIONThe Old Master "There is a brother with the social ideal of Masonry. To him the Order is first a benevolent institution, one which dispensescharity, supports homes, looks after the sick, buries the dead, and, occasionally, stages a 'ladies night' or a 'free feed' or an'entertainment'. He is a man who thinks more of the lessons of brotherly love than the language in which they are taught; as aritualist, he uses synonyms all the time, to the great distress of the ritually-minded Mason. To the social ideal of Masonry andthose to whom it makes its greatest appeal we are indebted for much of the public approbation of our Order, since in its social contacts it is seen of the world. "There are brethren to whom the historical, perhaps I should say the archeological ideal, is the one of greatest appeal. They are the learned men; the men who dig in libraries, read the books, who write the papers on history and antiquity. To them we are indebted for the real, though not yet fully told story of the Craft. They have taken from us the old apocryphal tales of the origin of the Order and set Truth in their places; they have uncovered a far more wonderful story than those ancient ones which romanticists told. They have given us the right to venerate ourage and vitality; before they came we had only fables to live by. To them we owe Lodges of Research, histories, commentaries, the great books of Masonry and much of the interpretation of our mysteries. "Then there is the symbolist. His ideal is found in the esoteric teachings of Freemasonry. He is not content with the bare outline of the meaning of our symbols found in our lectures-he has dug and delved and learned, until he has uncovered so great a wealth of philosophical, religious and fraternal lessons in our symbols as would amaze the Masons who lived before the symbolist began his work. "To him we are indebted for such a wealth of beauty as has made the Craft lovely in the eyes of men who otherwise would find in it only’ another organization.' To him we are indebted for the greatest reasons for its life, its vitality. For the symbolist has pointed the way to the inner, spiritual truths of Freemasonry and made it blossoms like the rose in the hearts of men who seek, they know not what, and find, that which is too great for them to comprehend.

MASONIC EDUCATIONThe Old Master . "These are but other ideals of Freemasonry, my son, but these are enough to illustrate my point. Brother Parkes follows thesocial ideal of Freemasonry, and follows it well. He is a good man, a good Mason, in every sense of the word. But he is not an 'ideal' Mason. An 'ideal’ Mason would have to live up to, to love, to understand, to practice, all the ideals of Freemasonry. And I submit, it cannot be done. "What's your ideal of Freemasonry?" asked the Younger Mason curiously, as the Old Past Master paused. "The one from which all the things spring", was the smiling answer. "I am not possessed of a good enough memory to be a fine ritualist; I don't have time enough to spare for many of the social activities of Masonry, I am not learned enough to be historian or antiquary, nor with enough vision to be an interpreter of symbols for any man but myself. My ideal is the simpleone we try to teach to all, and which, if we live up to it, encompasses all the rest; the Fatherhood of God, and the brotherhoodof man."

MASONIC TRIVIAHoover Dam, originally known as Boulder Dam from 1933 to 1947, when it was officially renamed Hoover Dam by a joint resolution of Congress, is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives. Some of those Operative Masons were also Speculative Masons and on the weekends when they were not building the dam, they used their expertise to build the Lodge building of Kingman Lodge No. 22 in Kingman, Arizona.

MASONIC TRIVIAThe game score was reported Bisbee 27, Douglas 26 or something similar to that, no one was quite sure after the circus football game on December 9, 1922 in Bisbee Arizona. More than 100 men, women, and children enjoyed the game and stunts that followed almost every play and the Boy Scoutfun was increased close to $500 by the end of the day. "There were flashed ofreal gridiron action yesterday, in spite of the fact that few expected to see anything resembling real football. But the real fun was in the burlesque. Stunt after stunt was staged, the program culminating in a remarkable operation on Harry Clark at the conclusion of the last quarter. Big Tony Fridberg was the first player knocked out, A derrick was rushed onto the field and Tony was hoisted to his feet. A few moments later Tony hit the dust again, this time it was announced that he had died and a coffin was brought onto the field and he was placed it in. Of course the it being Big Tony, the coffin was too small! There were a score of others just as funny, judging from the laughter that echoedaround the field. One player knocked out, could not be revived by Dr. Bridge andhis corps of physicians and nurses. A farmer rushed to the side of the injured player, drew a suspicious looking bottle from his pocket and at once revived him!Sounds like the precursor to the Harlem Globetrotters! Dr. George A. Bridge wasthe surgeon for the Phelps Dodge Corp. in Bisbee Arizona. He graduated from Yale in 1898, being elected into Phi Beta Kappa and came to Arizona in 1903 after graduating from Columbia Medical School. He was Master of Perfect Ashlar Lodge in 1912 and Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons in Arizona in 1915

Somewhat Masonic Trivia:Party like it’s 1787!Early Americans routinely consumed alcohol at rates that would put today’s college freshmen to shame, and our founding fathers were no exception. With no electricity, modern transportation or digital media, there simply wasn’t much else to do at night.A great example was George Washington’s farewell dinner on Friday, September 14, 1787 hosted by the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry. How do we know that? We have the bar tab! Yes, food was served, sort of. One item on the tab was “Rellishes, Olives etc.”, which sounds more like things you put in a cocktail than things you eat. Here are some of the charges:• 54 bottles of Madeira• 60 bottles of claret• 22 bottles of porter• 12 bottles of beer• 8 bottles of hard cider• 8 bottles of Old Stock (a.k.a. colonial whiskey)• 7 large bowls of spiked punchOK, you might think that’s not too bad for a large party. But it wasn't that large of a party, there were only 55 people there… once you do the math, that’s pretty impressive.

In 1990-1991, he served as Grand Master of Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons in Arizona. His first official visit as Grand Master was to a Magdalena Lodge No 50 in New Mexico because this was his father’s Lodge. Thirteen brothers from White River Lodge made the journey with him. The brothers of Magdalena Lodge greeted the brothers of White River Lodge with a chili dinner and great hospitality. In the spring of 1991, Most Worshipful Brother Porter held Grand Lodge in Show Low

On September 8th, 9th, and 10th of September 1913 the three degrees were held in a session within the walls of the Grand Canyon. The ceremonies started Monday with the EA Degree in the bottom of the Canyon. The Fellowcraft was held at the Halfway house in the afternoon, and Tuesday, on the top of Hopi Point and the third degree was held. A special train was hired to gather brethren from all over the state for this epic event. Part of the entertainment included a grand ball in the dining room of El Tovar on Monday evening

Hoover Dam, originally known as Boulder Dam from 1933 to 1947, when it was officially renamed Hoover Dam by a joint resolution of Congress, is a concretearch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona. 22 inKingman, Arizona.

TALES OF ARIZONA MASONRY 1882-2016Commander Dr. Robert W. J. Cocks (Jack)— Low on fuel, and with 27 Navy dive bombers in tow, 23-year-old Robert “Jack” Cocks landed his Curtiss SB2C Helldiver on the newly seized Tacloban Airfield located on Philippine island of Leyte. It was early in the evening of Oct. 25, 1944. Cocks and the 27 other pilots spent the day conducting airstrikes against a Japanese fleetled by Vice Admiral Takeo Kurita during the Battle off Samar. Nearly 2,500 American sailors and pilots were either dead, wounded or missing by day’s end; the battle is considered the most dangerous of the larger, three-day Battle of Leyte Gulf, which itself is regarded as one the largest Naval battles of World War II, according to a Norwich University study. “The (Tacloban) field was clear,” Cocks remembered, “but it was being worked on that day on the far end with Marston matting ... I went in first successful, (and)saw that the crew that was working on that end of the field was too darn close to planes that were coming in too fast.” Despite his exhaustion after diving through “a veritable curtain of anti-aircraft fire,” Cocks leaped from the Helldiver’s cockpit at the request of an Army officer in charge at Tacloban and ran toward the 27 incoming planes. “I grabbed a sheet or pillowcase or something,” Cocks said, “and went to the end of the runway and tried to give the standard signals for ‘You’re going too fast’ or ‘You’re too high for a good landing,’ that sort of thing, for, I don’t know, three hours. They were coming in regardless, and it was getting dark, too. There wasn’t an awful lot of time.” Only one-quarter of the airstrip was suitable for landings, according to a statement released after the heroic occurrence, “and that was pocked with holes and soft spots left by enemy bombs.” There were rumors of snipers still in the vicinity of the airfield, and Cocks unwittingly made himself an easy target as he guided the planes in. By 9 p.m., however, he landed all 27 planes and not one man was lost; he received the Legion of Merit — replete with the “V” Device for valor — for his efforts.

TALES OF ARIZONA MASONRY 1882-2016Commander Dr. Robert W. J. Cocks (Jack) The LOM and a slew of other medals are encased in a glass frame that hangs on the west wall of Cocks’ living room at the Sterling Inn; the contents of the room — on walls and in boxes — could fill a museum and paint a vivid picture of the Pacific Theater. But at 95, Cocks’ memories of tours in Guadalcanal and aboard the USS Hornet CV-12 as part of Carrier Air Group 11 remain the crucial link to a war that exists more than 70 years in the past. Cocks stood in the sand on Leyte and watched General Douglas MacArthur — then field marshal of the Philippine Army — return to the Philippines, a moment immortalized in an iconic photo-op. World War II Navy veteran Dr. Robert W. “Jack” Cocks, who safely guided more than two dozen fellow dive bombers onto the damaged Tacloban Airfield during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, died May 4 at his Sterling Inn home. He was 96. Cocks’ son, Chris Cocks, told the Daily Press the cause was congestive heart failure. Born April 29, 1921, in Morenci, Arizona, “Jack” Cocks was the son of English emigrants. At 20, during his second year at Northern Arizona University — then named Arizona State Teachers College — Cocks made a decision that shaped the next 40 years of his life. “A pilot flew over the campus in a Navy trainer. It circled the campus, landed in a field and a bunch of people went out to see what the deal was,” Chris Cocks said. “The Navy was looking for students. He submitted his name, and they started the process that day.” On Oct. 25, 1944, Cocks and 27 other pilots conducted airstrikes against a Japanese fleet during the Battle off Samar. According to a statement released by the Navy following the battle, the pilots “scored many damaging hits and near-hits,” but were “perilously short of fuel” and “elected to land at Tacloban rather than hazard the long return flight to their ship.” Only a quarter of the airfield was suitable for landing due to craters left by enemy bombs.

TALES OF ARIZONA MASONRY 1882-2016Commander Dr. Robert W. J. Cocks (Jack) Cocks came in first, then spent three hours signaling the incoming aircraft to ensure successful landings. He did so amid nearby snipers and still-exploding bombs. For his heroism, he received the Legion of Merit, replete with the “V” Device for valor. He was also decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross for a direct hit earlier that day on a light cruiser that was protecting the Japanese battleship Yamato. After the war, Cocks earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona, according to Chris Cocks. He also received two master’s degrees and, later, a doctorate incriminal administration from the University of Southern California. “He worked for the Los Angeles County Probation Department for many years and launched programs to readjust parolees into the work environment,” Chris Cocks said. “He started out as a probation officer, but moved up the ranks to deputy chief.” He retired from the Navy on April 29, 1981, after 40 years of service. In October of that year, as a deputy chief, Cocks received a citation from President Ronald Reagan in recognition of “exemplary service to the nation in advancing job opportunities in the business sector for disadvantaged citizens and needy youth.” Cocks switched to probation work at the federal level before becoming a district court executive at the Federal Courthouse in Los Angeles. “He described that as his ultimate achievement,” Chris Cocks said. “The pillar of his career was to work with those judges”

TALES OF ARIZONA MASONRY 1882-2016Commander Dr. Robert W. J. Cocks (Jack)Chris Cocks said his father’s military career was “never a part of his family life.” “I knew he was a pilot, but he never talkedabout it,” Chris Cocks said. “Even when I was a kid, he’d go away for the weekend, but I had no clue he was in military intelligence or that he was a test pilot after he came back from the war.” That changed in 2014 when Cocks was interviewed by filmmaker George Retelas and Nevada-based historian Tim Hampton for “Eleven,” a documentary about 11 surviving members of Carrier Air Group 11, a squadron that served aboard the USS Hornet, CV-12.

Brother Robert ‘Jack” Cocks was initiated into Coronado Lodge No. 8 F. &A.M. in Morenci, Arizona while a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy on January 25, 1944. He was Passed February 14, 1944, and Raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on February 22, 1944.

He later Affiliated with Safford Lodge No. 16 on May 4, 2017

He was buried with full Masonic Honors in Miramar National Cemetery.
