GREETINGS FROM THE COOKING CLUB Last term the first group of ESCA students completed a basic cooking class. Over the course of 10 weeks, children from Primary 3 to 6 learned about cooking and healthy food, discussed different types of ingredients and used various kitchen tools and appliances. At the end of the course, the children went home with welldeserved junior chef awards after having made some tasty appetizers, main dishes and desserts. The course provided the children with a solid basis for any future food education. If nothing else, they can always help their parents in the kitchen! I hope the class was successful in communicating the joy of cooking to our children and teaching them respect for food and the importance of a balanced diet, including ingredients, which perhaps they didn’t like much before. For sure, we had a lot of fun in the kitchen, frying eggs, baking bread and flipping pancakes. For me, it was an honour to teach cooking at ESCA and such a pleasure to see the children’s enthusiasm and eagerness to show the results of their work to their parents at the end of each lesson. The children certainly have reason to be proud! Some already tried the recipes on ESCA Newsletter for ESCA Parents and Friends | www.esca.kg No: 29 / 201516 10 April 2016

IB  APRIL  TRAIT

I   believe   we   all   strive   to   be   the   best  version   of   ourselves   that   we   can  be.    However,   this   is   not   always   easy,  simple,   or   at   times   obvious   how   to  do.    That’s  why  April’s   IB   Learner   Profile,  reflective,   is   such   an   important   one   for  students   and   educators   alike   to,   well,  reflect   upon.      Any   educator   worth   the  title   of   teacher   will   tell   you   that   they  reflect  on   their   practice   constantly.    Each  night,   especially   as   a   new   teacher,  thinking  about  what  went  well,  what  went  poorly,   and   how   to   make   it   better   the  next   day.    For   students,   too,   we   want  them   to   begin   a   reflective   practice   in  which   they   are   thinking   about  what   they  are  learning,  and  even  further,  thinking  about  their  thinking  (metacognition),  their  actions,  and  on  how  they  can  improve.      Educators  who  encourage  students  to  be  reflective  are  also  promoting  students  to  be  more  fully  engaged  in  the  process  of  making  meaning,  acting  as  facilitators  in  the  process  of  students  moving  beyond  simply  being  consumers  of  knowledge  to  being  producers,  synthesizers,  and  creators  of  knowledge.    Being   a   reflective   person   can   also   have   huge   benefits   in   increasing   one’s   emotional  intelligence,  in  understanding  others,  and  in  developing  one’s  creative  thinking  skills.    Therefore,  I  would  encourage  everyone  to  take

some  time  this  month  to  reflect  on  how  they  are  being  reflective  and  enjoy  the  benefits  to  come. Erin  McRaith,  Head  of  Education,  Primary  1  Form  Teacher

PRESCHOOL

This  week  in  Preschool  we  continued  our  exploration  of   spring,   and   ach   class   has   been   having   such  wonderful   lessons.    We   have   all   been   learning   the  same   theme   but   each   class   has   been   focusing   on  different  areas.    The  following  is  what  each  class  was  talking  about  during  this  amazingly  fun  week.   In  Preschool  1  we  continue  learning  about  the  world  through   spring.    We   explored   patterns  with   insects,  we   learned  a  song  about  snails  and  birds   to  explore  rhythm,   movements   and   colours,   and   we   practiced  our   fine   motor   skills   cutting   and   painting   with  flowers,   twigs   and   leaves.    We  also  went  outside   to  explore   all   the   living   creatures   in   our   schoolyard,  taking   our   shovels   and   buckets   to   discover   insects,  worms  and  spiders.

This  week  in  Preschool  2  we  finished  planting  our   flowers   for   springtime.   We   even   got   to  take  turns  watering  them  everyday!  We  made  a  collage  from  spring  things  we  found  outside  and   got   to   talk   about   baby   animals   and  seasons.  We   talked   about   what   seasons   are  and   the  weather  each  brings.    We  had  crafts  with   Ms   Tina   and   Ms   Gulnaz   where   we  counted   birds   in   the   nests   we   made,   and  made   a   tree   with   our   hands.   We   learned  about   spring-‐cleaning   and   got   to   help   clean  some   of   the   tables   in   our   class.    We   then  painted   feathers   and   made   a   bird   for   our  classroom.  We   learned   about   the   letter   /Zz/  and   played,   what’s   in   the   bag,   with   things  that  start  with  /Zz/.  We  practiced  writing  our  names  and  writing  letter  /Zz/. Preschool   3   has   had   a   wonderful   time  exploring   spring   weather   based   on   the  popular   poem,   April   Showers   Bring   May  Flowers.   We   have   talked   about   spring  weather,  explored  what  “showers”   really  are  and  what  causes  them,  and  also  talked  about  different  types  of  clouds,  their  basic  meaning  and   what   they   can   tell   us   about   the  weather.    It   is   very   interesting   to   see   how  clouds  can  show  us  so  much!    We  even  did  an  activity  where  we  studied   the  clouds  outside  to  see  what   they  would   tell  us.    Additionally,  we   talked  about   rainbows  and  how   they  are  formed   and   what   we   need   for   our   seeds   to  grow   in   our   garden.    We   also   made   very  interesting  rainbows,  clouds,  and  flowers  this  week.    For   phonics   this   week  we  worked   on  two  letters  /Zz/  and  /Ww/.    We  talked  about  each  of  their  phonic  sounds  and  learned  how  to   make   them   correctly.    We   also   worked  with   wordless   books   and   some   short   sight  words.      For   Math   we   worked   on   putting  things  in  order  based  on  sequence.    We  have  also  been  working  on  counting  from  0  to  30.

Please   be   on   the   lookout  because  Preschool  is  going  to  be  going   on   a   field   trip   together  very   soon!    So   please   keep   your  eyes   and   ears   open   for   more  information.
