St. John Vianney Parish held its 75th Church Anniversary Sunday, January 15, with Mass followed by dinner in the parish social hall. All reservations were filled. Our Fourth Degree Honor Guard under the leadership of Commander Charles “Chaz” Headrick was present to represent us Knights. The food was delicious and Fathers Mangan, Mabee, Kogut and Donnelly sang in quartet for us. No, Father Tom Firestone didn’t join them but he had a big smile on his face as they sang. The event would have been more special except for Bishop Earl Boyea not being able to attend as he had unexpected back surgery which went well. Please keep Bishop Boyea in your prayers for a speedy recovery. K of C membership dues notices were sent out in January. Please return your dues and get your 2017 membership card. Also, please consider attending a meeting or more this calendar year. Lent will be here before you know it and the Council is in need of a Lenten Fish Bake chairman. The main thing Neal Roche, past faithful navigator of Msgr. Dunigan Assembly 510, remembers about his mother “is that she never gave up.” He said despite losing her left arm in a freakish automobile accident while living with her husband, Cornelius F. Roche, Sr., in New York City early in their marriage, the former Joan Beverly Ford didn’t let that stop her from living a full life. She not only raised five children, including Neal, Jr., but was a bowler, artist, bridge player, active in her parish and a force to be reckoned with on the golf course. As a member of Atlas Valley Golf Course, Mrs. Roche won numerous trophies and inspired others with her long drives and low scores. Mr. and Mrs. Roche also traveled in Europe and the South Pacific and later in life split their time between Michigan and Florida. She died July 25, 2015 at Genesys Regional Medical Center at age 87. The funeral was held July 29 in Holy Family Church, Grand Blanc.

PFN Roche Remembers his Mother She is survived by her husband, four of her surviving children, 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Like her son, Neal, she wrote poetry. Neal, Jr., said one day in 1965 she came to Neal and announced: “This is what I wrote. What do you think?” The family thought so much of that untitled work that they had it printed on her prayer card at her death. It reads”

A bit of earth, a treeA stone worn down

Is all that is left of meFor those who come to see

A daughter, a wife, a mother

Known not to the worldLoved only her ownBelongs now to God

And is no longer alone

Where did 2016 go?? It seemslike it was Thanksgiving yesterday and like summer was just last week. I hope you and your family had a great finish to 2016. Now, the first month of 2017 has just flown by. Hopefully, you’ve established a few goals for the New Year. I’ve learned a great tip regarding resolutions. First, write them down. Commit your goals to paper and post it someplace you will see it often. Writing down a goal is the first step toward achieving it. Second, resolve to have an expert look at your finances. I can’t think of many New Year’s resolution – aside from our Faith life and our health – that are more important than getting one’s financial house in order. Let’s schedule some time to meet together, and I, your professional Knights of Columbus agent, will provide an “insurance check-up” (at no cost!) that will evaluate any gaps in your family’s

Time to Get Your Financial House in Orderlife insurance protection. Now is the perfect time to address those gaps – not later. Keep in mind that unlike many other products, you don’t just need money to obtain life insurance, you also need good health, and no one knows when your health could change. Did you know that in addition to traditional life insurance, the Knights also specialize in strategies for asset protection, wealth transfer, and maximizing retirement income? When was the last time you received something for free that could provide value to you and your family for generations?

Call me today.

Overall school and council winner was Seventh Grader Alyssia Lince, who was awarded a trophy and plaque. Other contests are being held during the 2016-2017 school year.

Council 695’s effort to collect funds for The Salvation Army’s Christmas Kettle Drive will be recognized February 7, when the Genesee/Shiawassee Regional Command of The Salvation Army holds its annual volunteer appreciation dinner and presentations. Volunteers from Council 695 have been ringing the bells for The Salvation Army for decades outside Sam’s Club in Flint Township on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Members and volunteers were on duty again in 2016 accepting donations as customers entered Sam’s Club and departed. This year’s program was organized by Past Grand Knight Jack Tylus and Financial Secretary Joe Goergen. They can only speculate on how well council volunteers did because The Salvation Army won’t reveal the results until the appreciation dinner. “I can’t even express how much we appreciate what you guys do,” said Lydia Sanchez, volunteer and events coordinator, who said all the totals from volunteer groups will be announced at the dinner.

You couldn’t blame Brother Knight Jim Jackson if he takes a different view of the National Football League playoff games while watching teams playing for the championship. After all, besides being the football coach at Flint Southwestern High School for 18 years, Bro. Jim has been a referee for boys’ football games since retiring from coaching in 1990. His duties can take him away from home four days a week and has taken him all the way to Ford Field in Detroit for a high school championship game. Bro. Jim, a member of Council 695 since 2013, coached at Flint Southwestern from 1972 to 1990 and then reluctantly said “yes” to a request to referee prep football games. He has refereed Junior High, Junior Varsity, Varsity and on Saturday for kids roughly in ages 7-12 in the Mid-Michigan Rural Football League.

A Different Kind of WhistleblowerHelp Fund State Charities,Bolster Council 695 Coffers You can help raise money for state Knights of Columbus charities and bolster the Council 695 treasury at the same time as possibly winning one or more of 30 giveaways. By now council members should have received information on the annual fundraiser for council and state charities. Included were a dozen tickets to buy or sell in the program with each $5 ticket sold earning Council 695 $1 if you include Council 695 in the space provided in each ticket. Sixteen groups are listed among recipients of funds raised in the program where winners will be drawn at 2:30 p.m. April 22, 2017 at DeCarlo’s Banquet Center in Warren. A number of the recipients are groups that benefit people statewide while others are regional organizations with broad appeal. The specific groups are listed on the information sheet accompanying the tickets. The top four awards are trips to various designations, headed by the first place award of an Alaskan cruise. The second award is a trip to Atlantis Paradise Island; the third a trip to Cancun; and a fourth award a trip to Washington, D.C. Each trip also includes cash to the winner. After the trips come 26 cash awards ranging from $150 to $1,000. Even if you don’t win an award, you can receive money for selling a winning ticket. And Council 695 can receive a cash award if one of the top four awards is sold by a council member. Also, there are awards for the top councils in ticket sales, top district deputies, and top diocesan program directors. If you haven’t turned in your tickets, look at information you received by the State Knights of Columbus for details about the awards and how you can participate. As the state K of C notes, “The biggest winners are the charities that we support.”

In 2015, in addition to refereeing during the regular season, he was selected to referee in high school playoff games. That took him from refereeing a pre-district game, followed by a district championship game to a semi-final game and finally in November 2015 to the championship game between Flint Powers Catholic and Zeeland West High School at Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions. Refereeing keeps Bro. Jim in the game, and more. “It’s more for fun and for exercise for me,” said Bro. Jim, president of the Council 695 Building Company and a Eucharistic Minister at St. John Vianney Church. Bro. Jim is another example of Council 695 members being involved in the church and the community as well as the Knights of Columbus.

Council 695 has received thank-you notes from three groups it has assisted recently with donations. Two of the notes came from groups that received Christmas contributions. The Willowbrook Manor Activities Department signed a thank-you for a $200 contribution. “Thank you very much for the monetary donation,” read the note. “It was greatly appreciated. It helped with the residents’ Christmas gifts!” Deacon Tony Verdun of St. John Vianney Parish and his wife, Susan, sent a thank-you for a $100 donation to their Angels Outreach Ministry Christmas party. “Thank you all very much for your kindness and support,” the Verduns said. “We average 150 children and parents at the Christmas party. The weather was so bad. “People like you all are a wonderful reflection of God’s special love!” the note continued. “Keep up the good work all of you are doing.” The council also received a Christmas card from the St. John Vianney Angels Outreach Ministry which read “Thank you for your support. God’s grace be with you,” and it was signed by Deacon Tony and Susan Verdun. The third thank-you came from St.
