“In 2014 I travelled across the world to attend a 3 week summer camp. The Collective Sound is a highlight of my life

so far. Between the people you meet, the knowledge you attain and the opportunities you experience The Collective

Sound offers an incredible all round summer camp experience. I came home with another family from all over

the world and a greater knowledge of exactly whats out their in the music industry. I would recommend TCS to anyone who thinks they want to have a future in music, or who just

“I first attended the Collective Sound in high school and it was truly an amazing experience. It

taught me so much about the team working aspect of music and how to work creatively with other

people my age. It's so crucial for young kids to be exposed to the type of experience that the

Collective Sound provides. I am forever grateful to the Collective Sound for helping me get my foot

into the door of the music industry.”

ZAC SMITH Zac Smith founded The Collective Sound Summer Music Academy in 1998 while attending CSU Chico. Growing up home schooled in a musical family he learned to play the guitar at a young age and decided to major in “Music Performance” and “Music Industry” at University. Learning about recording arts, composition and the music business is what inspired him to create an academy. From the beginning it was a place for youth to develop their creativity in a collaborative environment with other like minded musicians. It was designed to be an environment where students have guided access to the tools and resources necessary to bring their creative ideas to life both individually and as a group.

Zac also founded a creative agency and production company while continuing his work with TCS. His professional career further reinforced the value of learning to collaborate creatively. His experience with recording, film, photography, the music industry, and contemporary/popular music proved important to his own success as an entrepreneur. Through those experiences, working with diverse clients and teams, he further realized the importance of developing the skills to formulate, communicate and execute creative ideas. The foundation of the The Collective Sound Academy curriculum is based on the concept of creative collaboration, which expands far beyond the bounds of music and into all industries where original ideas and creative problem solving are a factor. The fast paced guided discovery and DIY (do it yourself) approach to learning, mirror the constantly changing, real world landscape he has experienced throughout his career.

The Collective Sound has remained a focus for Zac since its beginning and he has continued to lead the organization as it has grown both domestically and internationally. His vision is to help develop the next generation of artists and creative young minds, giving them the tools and skills to succeed in life. Along the way he will continue to bring his own creative ideas to life in the form of film, music, creative enterprises and art.

STEPHEN HUND Born and raised in Charlottesville, VA, Stephen started playing the drums at age 9, and the noise has not stopped. He received superb fundamental education in marching, symphonic, and jazz drumming from Mr. Gary Fagan as a child and teenager before venturing into the world of ‘garage bands’ with his older brother, singer/songwriter/guitarist Brenton Hund. At the University of Virginia Stephen did intense study of jazz drumming and history with renowned jazz drummer and instructor Robert Jospe. After college Stephen moved to California where he played, toured, and recorded with various bands across a variety of genres. Most notably he recorded and toured the United States with the Jerry Garcia Band led by Melvin Seals. Stephen founded his drum school in San Francisco in 2001 and then moved to New York City in 2002, establishing the Manhattan Drum Studios.

In New York City Stephen trained with legendary jazz icon Joe Morello and also with improvisational jazz fusion drummer Billy Martin (from Medeski, Martin and Wood). Stephen’s Manhattan Drum Studios flourished immediately in New York City. Stephen hooked up with Grammy-award-winning producer Malcolm Burn (U2, Bob Dylan, Emmy Lou Harris, John Mellencamp etc.) with whom he worked as a session drummer on a host of albums from artists around the world. Stephen’s playing and teaching approaches are informed by all of the experiences he has had as a student, player, and teacher. His goal is always to share these experiences with our students at The Collective Sound.

Artists Stephen has worked with: Ground Zero; PSI; The Founders; Jasper Thresh; the Chris Brooks Band, Zach Gil’s Wonder Bakery; the Pat Burtis Trio; the Black Nativity Orchestra; Brother Freak; Melvin Seals Melting Pot; JGB (former Jerry Garcia Band); Luthea Salom; Lyndsey Highlander Band. Boom Operators, Bill McGarvey and the Good Thieves, Wynne Paris, William Paris, Sandrine, Sean Peori, Admiral Freebee, Krista Polvere, Joshua Meltzer, A.M. O’Grady, Naomi Rabinowitz
