Why irrigation is restricted to just one day per week from November to March

IRRIGATIONDuring Cooler MonthsDuring this time, Florida experiences lower temperatures, lower humidity and less daylight so plants and turf grow slower. Therefore, they don’t need as much water. Turf grasses go dormant and turn brown when it’s cooler, which is normal. In fact, watering more than once a week may be harmful because plants don’t use all the water and excess water can cause stress to plants and even lead to fungal disease. Low water–use, drought–tolerant plants and turf, like Bahia grass, rarely need supplemental irrigation once they are established. These plants can survive off rainfall. You can help your turf survive dry conditions by training it to develop deeper roots. Irrigate only when your grass begins to show signs of wilting:

folding leaf blades, blue–gray color or footprints remain-ing visible. To encourage deep rooting, irrigate your lawn infrequently and with the right amount of water (1/2” – 3/4” per watering event). Another way to encourage deeper rooting is proper mowing. Mow at the highest recommended height for your grass type. Deep roots mean better drought tolerance and drought–tolerant turf requires less water, which saves you money.

Visit the Water Conservation webpage at www.wintergar-den–fl.gov to learn more about landscaping, drought–tolerant plants, turf, irrigation and watering rules.

Green Your Holiday Scene

The amount of household garbage in the United States can increase between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, from 4 million tons to 5 million tons. The holidays are special, but festivities don’t have to negatively impact our environment.

Here are some measures to lessen our impact:

• Turn off or unplug holiday lights during the day to save energy and help your lights last longer.• Buy items with minimal packaging and/or made with recycled content. Check product labels to determine an item’s recyclability and whether it is made from recycled materials.• Bring reusable cloth bags for holiday gift shopping. Avoid using bags for small or oversized

purchases.• Donate to charities the older toys that you no longer use.• Buy cards made from recycled paper (look for “post-consumer” content).• Choose cards printed on white stock without metallic or plastic coatings.• Substitute postcards for cards that require envelopes and cost more to ship.• Decorate with more energy efficient LEDs strings to save energy.• Review the list of recyclables that the City accepts.• Buy locally grown trees to save energy associated with transportation.• Buy a smaller tree to reduce waste.

HOLIDAY COLLECTIONIf your regular garbage/recycling day falls on a “no pick-up services” holiday, your garbage will be collected on your next scheduled garbage pick-up day & recycling on your next scheduled recycling pick-up day.
