    A Letter from the Pastor

Last month something quite interesting and fascinating took place near downtown Minneapolis. I spoke of this new development in my homily on the weekend of October 10/11. I said then that this unique experience, that happens there about every ten years, drew the attention of many people who wanted to come and see it for themselves. What exactly happened then and there that caught the attention of so many curious people?

The waters of the mighty Mississippi River were stopped in their customary flow over their usual and steady course between the large and small portions of the Saint Anthony Falls. Why were the river waters stopped? How did the river crew actually stop them? Water engineers and river experts wanted to test the locks and dams for the river in that specific area. So they stopped the flow of the river. Then with the waters cleared away, there was a big, open, dry area that allowed them and the curious public to come and look about. What a brand new perspective that was for everyone! The waters were ‘drawn down’ to about twelve feet less, which allowed them to inspect the locks for the dam and to look at the rock and terrain at the bottom of the river itself.

Even the public was allowed to come to the area and see what was taking place. While people were not ‘walking on water’ they were 'walking on firm stones and on the hardened surfaces’ over which the waters of the river have rushed over for thousands of years. When it was cleared away, some people were curious and looked for treasures, but most of the items they found were only garbage, the things that people had thrown into the river years before, which were not suppose to be there. And then, they all, as good modern environmentalists, began to remove the rubbish before the waters of the river were allowed to return their familiar flow only a few days later.

I have never been in that immediate area, but many people were fascinated with the opportunity to stand in a place that was normally dangerous and forbidden. Rivers have tremendous speed with a powerful force and they move everything along in one, unrelenting path, one way!

At one point I thought about the parting of the Red Sea in the Old Testament book of Exodus, so that the Israelites were able to cross over on dry land from the land of slavery into the land of freedom. Another thought also came to mind. I also thought that the garbage at the bottom of the river did not belong there! So too, our sins on the bottom of our souls also do not belong there either. We all need to remove both these harsh deposits. If we all want clean air and clear water, why should we not also want a clean spirit and a pure heart.

As people removed the garbage away from the bottom surface of the river, I thought about how God takes away our sins when we fall to the bottom of our lives and when we need His mercy and forgiveness. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is the cleansing force that makes, once again, holy and pure our sin-sick souls that are crushed by the waves of sin and evil. It is good for us to come to the Sacrament of Forgiveness on a regular basis to remove the sins of our past that adhere to the bottoms of our souls and need to be removed from our interior lives. Just like the clean river that flows with fresh waters that are renewed and become more alive at all levels of depth, our souls can once again ‘sing out’ their praise of God as we rejoice in His cleansing mercy and roaring love for us. We have all been made ‘new’ in the waters of baptism. And when our river of life gets dirty again after Baptism, we can get the garbage of our sins removed through a worthy and regular reception of the

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION What is Spiritual Communion? When a Catholic is unable to receive the Eucharist for one of several reasons —- breaking the one hour fast, being in a state of mortal sin, or homebound or unable to leave our home to attend Mass as in a time of pandemic —- the Church encourages us to make an act of “spiritual communion,” where we unite ourselves to God through prayer. It is a beautiful way to express to God our desire to be united with him when we are unable to complete that union in the reception of Holy Communion. Pray one of the following prayers as an Act of Spiritual Communion: My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

  • November 1, 2020 The Solemnity of All Saints

    OUR HOPE AND GOD’S PROMISE

The Church uses these waning November days and darker skies as the season to remind us of the last things. Today’s feast, the Solemnity of All Saints, is the centerpiece of three days that point to doctrines we proclaim each time we say the Apostles’ Creed: “We believe in the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.” And while the days and our hearts may be dark, the readings today are bright with the light of faith. John’s vision in the book of Revelation reveals dazzling angels and white-robed saints gathered in triumph around the throne of God. In the responsorial psalm we sing our longing to see God’s face, and in the second reading John writes that we are God’s children and will, in fact, see God “as he is” (1 John 3:2). This is our hope. This is God’s promise. Today we celebrate the triumph of those who already gaze on the face of God. Tomorrow we cry out for mercy with those in purgatory, who, like us on earth, still long to see God’s face. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Saints of God remind us of that power of

that Sacrament as we observe today’s Feast of All Saints. Indeed, the Saints knew and rejoiced in the power of God’s steady river of mercy that flows generously and constantly (like a river) through this healing sacrament. And, they were very also frequent in their readiness to receive all the life-enriching graces that came to them from their regular approach to the confessional room.

These were my personal thoughts and reflections as I watched the engineering crew ‘draw down’ the Mississippi river water to a complete stop, then check the locks and clean the river bottom, and finally restore the waters to their new and vibrant flow. An alert human conscience is like the lock and dam of a river. With the aid of a well-formed Christian conscience, we need to recognize and then stop the flow of our sins, be cleansed of them completely, and then permit the return of the free flow of God’s grace within each one of us, that is reopen the lock (after the shut down)! May that noble grace-filled effort be our own familiar experience on a regular basis. And all Praise be to the God of our Baptism and of our Reconciliation, where the precious Blood and Water, flowing forth from the Body of Christ on the Cross for our Salvation, brings us forgiveness and peace like all the Saints before us knew and received. Fr. Mark Juettner Pastor
