Recovery at a Glance With your support, A Future with Hope has been able to accomplish the following work as of January 10, 2014 reports:

23 homes complete 13 homes under construction  14 homes in queue 6,985 volunteers (relief and recovery) 12 host sites In December, we hosted construction

teams from Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

We continued to partner with Brethren Disaster Ministries and World Renew Disaster Response Services in our construction projects.

Hundreds of clergy and their families gathered together in Long Branch, NJ to boost the business for Sandy hit area for the 2014 Bishop’s Convocation, Jan 27-29.

God was moving in mighty ways throughout the three days.  Each day featured Spirit-filled worship, through-provoking plenary sessions and small group reflections on a variety of topics designed to inspire and encourage clergy to return home ready to grow more vital congregations.

On the last day, Bishop John Schol expressed that in order to move forward, there’s a need for clergy to try something bold and innovative, “I want you to experiment, to come up with the

next new thing and I want to support you in that.”

Before parting ways to head back out into the mission field, participants spent time in prayer for the Conference, its leaders and one another.  Exciting things are sure to come from the blessed time spent fellowshipping and learning from each other.

Lent is the Christian observance of the liturgical year from Ash Wednesday, March 5 this year,  to  Holy Week, marking the Death and Resurrection of

Jesus, which recalls the events of the Passion of Christ on Good Friday, which then culminates in the celebration on Easter Sunday of the

Resurrection of Jesus Christ. As a form of penitence many of the faithful commit to fasting or to giving up certain types of luxury during Lent.(see page 1. Healing Service)

Rainbow Staff TrainingTopic: Celiac disease

One of children’s mom gave the staff a nice informative training on Jan. 20. Celiac disease, also known as coeliac disease, is an autoimmune disorder that affects around 1 in 100 Americans. The disease is caused by gluten intolerance. Gliadin, a protein in wheat, causes the afflicted person’s immune system to attack its own bowel tissue. This causes villous atrophy, or the erosion of the nutrient absorbing villi that line the small intestine. Other grains, like barley and rye, have similarly shaped proteins which can cause the same reaction in sensitive individuals.Celiac disease can cause irreversible damage. The issue seems to be genetic in cause and can be passed down through generations. Testing for celiac disease is done through blood tests and endoscopy. It is important for the afflicted

person to continue eating gluten while they are tested for celiac disease. When they remove gluten from their diet, their body starts to repair itself, giving a false negative for the tests.Celiac disease can cause a multitude of problems. The major ones come from malabsorption of nutrients. This can lead to osteoporosis, anemia, and stunted growth in children. Those who suffer from celiac disease are also  more likely to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma when compared to the general population. The best way to protect yourself and minimize your risk is early diagnosis and strict diet.
