People eat different kinds of food which have good meanings. Eating lettuce stands for riches. A whole fish (with its head and tail) is a symbol of having more than enough. Sweet sticky dumplings are a symbol of family love and unity.
In the past, people went from home to home to visit relatives. They also set off firecrackers. On the last day, children guessed ‘lantern riddles’.
Nowadays, some families gather in a restaurant to eat and talk about happy things. Playing with firecrackers is dangerous and illegal, but many people go to watch the beautiful firework display in Victoria Harbour.
Chinese New Year is a happy family time. Children love Chinese New Year because they get lots of lucky money in red packets!
