THE CFS WEEKLY “GROWING AND LEARNING TOGETHER
To Parent and Carers,
Hello CFS Family
One of our goals for the year is to
raise the attendance rate across the
school. So far, it is not working very
well.
I would like to reiterate the importance of attending school
every day.
In 2017 our net attendance rate was 77.2%. What this
actually means is that across the year, on any given day,
our attendance rate varies from being very high to very
low. These daily figures are averaged out across the whole
year and we arrive at the figure of 77.2%.
For a school of about 220 students, this equates to an
average of 170 children actually at school every day, or
looking at it another way, 50 children not coming to school
every day.
We strive to have all students attending at least 80%,. By
attending only 80% of the time, you are missing 8 weeks a
year which is nearly one term of school, and over five years
this adds up to one entire year of school missed. Can any
child really afford to miss an entire year of school?
Every child should be aiming for 100% attendance.
Poor attendance has a negative flow on effect throughout
the school;
Children don’t learn as quickly as they should
Children don’t catch up as quickly as they should
Children miss out on all of the fun things at school
Children miss out of the opportunities to make friends
Children miss out of the extra art, music, sport and
cultural programs the school runs
Teachers have to spend extra time re-teaching the
work that has been missed
The school loses funding:
Less Teachers
Less Resources
Less Excursions
As the year progresses we will be rolling out new and
exciting attendance initiatives to improve our attendance
across the school. We realize however, that the best plans
in the world will have little impact if the children and
families that make up our school community are not on
board.
If there are issues which prevent your child from attending
at 100%, please let us know. If your child does not like
something about the school, please come and talk to us
about it. You cannot change a system from the outside. You
need to engage if you want to be part of our continuous
improvement journey.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Jeff

The 5/6 Leadership Camp for 2018 was held at Riyala, it is about 45km south of Darwin. The camp site was unique as it was surrounded by na-ture and beautiful gardens. After we unpacked we went on a lovely na-ture walk to stretch our legs. Then we went onto the fun activities. The activities gave us an opportunity to show leadership and be a part of the team. We learnt a lot about each other and we had a chance to social-ize with people from the other 5/6 classes. The activities also let us communicate and work as a team. The activities included a scavenger hunt to learn more about each oth-er. Desert Survival was the next ac-tivity where we had to select items that would be essential to have if we found ourselves stranded in the de-sert, we also had to make decisions about what we would do. Unfortu-nately most of us would have died because most groups opted to walk to safety instead of waiting to be found. On Tuesday, we woke up bright and early, ready to go to the Charles Darwin University. Where we visit-ed the Sports Science Centre. There we learnt all about sport science, motion and people’s reactions. After sport science we had an hour of some Flip Out fun. Finally we headed safely back to Katherine. Ruby Rosas Christina Hill
