Admission is free, but tickets are required (Visit www.VMFA.museum/ symposia/caligula for info and updates). Using advanced scanning technologies, we have been able to produce highly detailed (accurate to 0.25 mm!) 3-D digital renderings of the statue that have enabled us to virtually reconstruct the missing parts of the statue, correct previous restorations, and hypothesize (on the basis of new examinations) the statue’s original polychromy. Participants in the symposium will discuss issues that pertain directly to the proposed reconstructions of the statue (Bernie Frischer, UVA; Mark Abbe, UGA; Jan Stubbe Østergaard, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek; Kathy Gillis, VMFA’s senior objects conservator); issues in the artistic representation of the Caligula (John Pollini, USC; Eric Varner, Emory University); Caligula as a historical person (Steven Fine, Yeshiva University; Vasily Ruditch, Independent Scholar); and the ancient and modern history and presentation of the statue (Maria Picozzi, La Sapienza; Paolo Livorani, University of Florence; Peter Schertz, VMFA). Many of the topics are not without controversy, and the discussion promises to be both lively and stimulating. 2011-2012 CAV EXECUTIVE

COMMITTEESalvete Omnes,

See you all soon–10 September 2011 in Charlottesville–for the fall meeting of the academic year, though we need a catchy name: “centennial + one” doesn’t quite have a ring to it. We will have two speakers at this meeting , about whom you will read elsewhere in this newsletter. Both are new to the Classical Association of Virginia, and this highlights a new effort we have begun to spread the influence and presence of our association in the schools and colleges of the state,. The most immediate manifestation of this effort is the appointment of two new membership chairs– they will keep records of our members, coordinate communication, and expand our membership by renewing or creating contacts in public schools, private schools, colleges, and universities. The two are Patricia Lister and Janice Siegel– welcome and thanks to both. All of you can help them in their job by bringing to our meetings new colleagues, friends, relatives, ... . This is also the last newletter for our multitalented editor, Cathy Daugherty. We all know how that for many years she has been a central and crucial and collegial and indispensable player in the Classical Association of Virginia. I am at a loss for what to say, so just a collective and heartfelt thank you. nos omnes gratias maximas tibi agimus. She will certainly be a tough act to follow, but I hope that doesn’t inhibit one of our members from stepping in to carry the flag. Finally, the 2012 spring meeting will be held May 5 in Blacksburg at Virginia Tech. I hope you will all plan to come (we in the more westerly parts of the state sometimes like to feel the love, too). We have developed a thriving program in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Classical Studies and would like to show it off a bit. I know it’s a drive for some of you, but come and enjoy the New River Valley for a night or two. More on this soon. Andrew S. Becker

The 2011 recipient of the Wayne W. Wray CAV Student Scholarship is James Lindsay Potter, a graduate of E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg. In addition to completing the full high school curriculum of Latin under Mr. William Altman, James has studied Latin with Dr. Robert Lloyd, professor emeritus of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and Dr. Susan Stevens at Randolph College.
