Jesus makes the point that undue attention given to the material things of life will ultimately mean too little attention given to the spiritual dimension and our relationship with God. It is not the owning of property that is the hindrance. The real problem lies in the fact that this man places greater importance on his wealth than he does on living a life focussed on following Christ. He is missing the point. 2 King Street, Manly Vale NSW 2093 Phone: 99494455 Fax: 9949 3413 Email: [email protected] Parish Websites: www.northharbourcatholic.org.au St Kieran’s Manly Vale IN THE CARE OF THE AUGUSTINIANS RCIC Enquiry for RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation for Children) to be held on Sunday October 18 at 10.45am in the St Kieran’s Parish Centre, Manly Vale. This gospel highlights the tension between merely observing the law and really giving oneself totally and wholeheartedly to the way of Christ. Jesus makes the point that undue attention given to the material things of life will ultimately mean too little attention given to the spiritual dimension and our relationship with God. It is not the owning of property that is the hindrance. Annual Mass for People with Special Needs

Sunday 1st November @ 9.30am St Kieran’s Church

Celebrated by Bishop Peter Comensoli

Prayer from Bishop Peter for the Synod of the Family

“Holy Family of Nazareth, many the Synod of Bishops make us once more mindful of the sacredness of the family and its beauty

in God’s plan.”

The theme of Mental Health Month NSW is “Value your Mind” and is part of a national mental health promotion campaign held throughout October each year. The timing of the campaign centres on World Mental Health Day, which happens each year on October 10. The main message of this campaign is to encourage all individuals to think about how mental health exists in their daily life & promote the need for all individuals to make mental health a priority in their daily lives. When we make our mental health a priority, we are practicing self- care which is an important part of our daily living to ensure the maintenance of a balanced wellbeing.

Dear Fellow Parishioners, 11th October 2015 The question asked by the young man of Jesus “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” brings the reply “Go and sell everything you have and give your money to the poor, then come follow me”. Most of us might be quite prepared to follow Jesus on the pathway to Salvation that he points towards, but our faces would certainly fall at the possibility that we might be asked to give away our wealth – which is one security blanket we cannot do without.

The Irish have a saying “I am going now to make my soul” which means to prepare for the final dispossession that allows an older person to slip through that tiny eye of the needle unencumbered by too many security blankets that may have gathered around them over the years.

I think if we were to put to Jesus the same question the young man asked he might give us this kind of advice: “Prepare for eternal life by living each day more fully; work at loving more deeply, more affectionately and more gratefully. Tell someone close to you that you love them and appreciate them for who they have been for you”. It is this self-forgetfulness that frees us to follow Jesus without any hesitation.

Pope Francis composed a prayer this year which captures his hopes for how we are meant to live: “God of love, show us our place in this world as channels of your love for all the creatures of this earth, for not one is forgotten in your sight. Enlighten those who possess power and money that they may avoid sin and indifference, that they may love the common good, advance the weak, and care for this world in which we live. The poor and the earth are crying out. O Lord, seize us with your power and light, help us to protect all life, to prepare for a better future, for the coming of your Kingdom of justice, peace, love and beauty. Praise be to you. Amen.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

‘Everything is possible for God.’ Mark 10:27 At school: When I find loving others a bit hard, do

I ask God to help me? At work or study: How faithful am I in my acceptance of God’s total love for me? In my family life: In tough times, do we turn to God, confident of guidance and inspiration?

Prayer this week? God, what is possible for you may not be always

clear to us. Even if we see no answers yet, help us to know you are with us, holding us,

waiting with us. Amen

From St. Augustine

Come, Lord, into my soul, which You have prepared for Your own reception by inspiring in

me a longing for Your goodness. Confessions 13, 1

New Stained Glass Window

Those attending St Kieran’s for Mass

this weekend may have noticed the new stained glass window. While the

window is new the glass is not. The stained glass from the windows replaced by the new St Kieran

windows behind the music area was preserved, turned into a single window and this week installed beside the weekday entrance to the Church. Have a look on the way out or next time you are in Church, it was well worth the wait.
