February 21st 2016 Dear Fellow Parishioners,

August 6th each year is the Feast of the Transfiguration which takes its

origins from the dedication of three Basilicas on Mount Tabor to commemorate the request of Peter to be allowed to erect three tents on such a holy site. Already in Apostolic times the Mount of the Transfiguration had become the "holy mount" and by the 9

th century it had

firmly entered into the liturgical life of the Church, both Western and Orthodox. The event described in three of the Gospels is placed about a year before Jesus climbs another sacred mount to Calvary. But on this occasion he takes with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, James

and John, and leads them to what Tradition assures us was Mount Thabor, which in those days was covered with green trees and shrubs, and was very fruitful. It rises something like a sugar-loaf, in a vast plain in the middle of Galilee. This was the spot in which the events in today’s Gospel took place.

The three figures on the mountaintop – Elijah, Moses and Jesus – all had something in common. At a certain moment in their lives they ‘met’ God and their lives were changed forever. Elijah was hiding in a cave to escape persecution when he was called out to encounter God in the gentle breeze and the effects of this transformed his heart so that he became a beacon and a beckoning in the lives of all who met him.

Moses was in great conflict as to how to lead the people, so God put him in the cleft of a rock and placed his hand over him as he then ‘passed by’. Moses caught a glimpse of God’s coat-tails but it was enough for him, when he came down from the mountain, to have to wear a veil over his face to stop the people from being dazzled by his countenance.

Jesus entered into the cloud and heard the Father say “This is my Son, my chosen. Listen to him” and with that assurance his face changed and he went forward to meet the hatred of the mob with the love and the strength of the Father to support him.

From the beginning of Salvation History God has been transfiguring the lives of all human-

kind and sending them out to transform the lives of other men and women by what they say

and do. The words of St. Paul in today’s second Reading are meant to be taken personally:

“The Lord Jesus Christ will transfigure these wretched bodies of ours into copies of his own

glorious body. He will do this by the same power with which he can subdue the whole

universe”. So every human being that has ever been created has within

them the divine spark from God claiming them as his own beloved child in

whom he is well pleased.

One of the things we always like to highlight during our planned giving campaigns is just how much happens in our parish. We have 2 Churches, 2 schools, the parish centre and there is always something happening somewhere. During 2015 we performed 170 Baptisms, 206 Confirmations, 165 First Communions, 47 Funerals and 2 Weddings. We conduct 11 regular Masses a week. Our Catechists see around 800 children in state schools a

week. We have a dedicated group of Eucharistic Ministers offering pastoral care, on a daily basis, to those in our community no longer able to attend Church. We have children’s liturgy, Vinnies groups, Catholic Women League, hospitality, social justice, music and many, many other groups. We have been a parish that has always had a history of volunteering and of financial contribution to maintain our Churches. Some of our contributors are now the 3rd generation of families to support the Parish. Supporting the Church is not only about financial support, it’s also about getting involved, joining a group, helping out at Mass or perhaps just saying g’day to a new face in Church. If you would like to join the planned giving program there are forms in the pews or the foyer. If you would like more information about the volunteer work and groups within the parish please contact the parish office.
