For the last 2 weeks, Chrysalis Class have been learning about winter and polar animals.

What a busy bunch of learners!

We have used the Oliver Jeffers book, ‘Lost and Found’ to think about what to do if you found a lost penguin. The

children created posters to help find a lost penguin and posted them around the school. Many of the older chil-

dren became concerned about the lost penguin and asked staff if they could help find it. The penguin was eventu-

Chrysalis Class have also

been learning about space.

We have used the Oliver

Jeffers books, ‘How to catch a

star’ and ‘The way back

home’ to help us think of cre-

ative solutions to space prob-

lems: How could you catch a

star? And, how do you get

back from the moon when

your space rocket has run out

of petrol?

We made aliens, planets,

stars and many different

space vehicles. What a lot of

fun learning!

Well done to these children who went over and above with their homework this week. The high quality

and care that has gone into their self-motivated learning will stand them in good stead for their move to

secondary school and beyond. We at Carswell make sure our year sixes are prepared for the increase

and expectations of homework as they move into Year seven. Terrific work!

This stunning charcoal sketch of a Viking

is by Neha in the Year 4 Swallowtail class.

You can see she’s very carefully thought

about the proportion, type of line and

composition of this work. Neha says she

loves to draw and has filled many sketch-

books at home that are all now finished!

Brilliant work Neha!

Dear Parents and Carers,

It’s been a blustery and rainy week this week but it hasn’t dampened our spirits.

Wet play (when we can’t go outside for break and lunch) gives children a chance to play board games, play with Lego and toys, draw and sketch and hang out and chat. All things that build social and emotional skills which are as important in our school as the subject and project learning we are passionate about.

We've been learning about our Good Learner posters in assembly since the be-ginning of term, we have updated them to make clear the process that children’s brains go through to ‘learn how to learn’ (the technical name for it is ‘metacognition’). We are using simple symbols and gestures to ensure that all ag-es can access this learning support - keep your eye out around school and in the office for the new sleek-look posters.

Mrs Rutty and Mrs O’Shea started their parent group this week, it happens on Wednesday evenings in the palace (the room above the office) from 6.30 pm until 8.30 pm. We always have terrifically positive feedback about these courses. Once parents know its completely non-judgemental and very supportive, particularly with ideas of how to deal with tricky parenting issues like screen time, we get great feedback on its usefulness. All are welcome to join and it’s free so watch out for the next round in the future.

Next Friday afternoon is the first FOCS second hand clothes sale (starting at 2.30 pm). There will be another one the following Friday (31st Jan). Thank you all who donated. The proceeds, like always, will go to making sure the school and your child/ children has access to resources, trips, visits and experiences that make our school so special.

Coming up on Thursday 23rd of January at 3.15 pm until 4 pm is our vision after-noon. I encourage everyone to attend; you ’ll be finding out how we are developing our creative vision and what we are doing to stay current with educational research and changes from the Department for Education. Your children will be looked after by our staff while you’re there and there will be tea and coffee available. I hope to see you there!

That’s all from me this week, have a great weekend and I’ll see you next week.

Best wishes,

Mr. Crandon
