Display Options Figure 1 shows the CHS NONNA Data Portal. Various buttons are available for you to customize your viewing experience and download data. Their various functions are broken down here:

“+” and “-“ buttons: Zoom in and out of the viewer. You can also scroll in and out using the scroll wheel on your mouse OR by holding Shift and dragging a box over the area of choice;

Hide Cells button: Toggle the cell boundaries on and off;

TIP: If you toggle off the Hide Cells button and hover your mouse over bathymetric data, the depth will be displayed next to the cursor. Depth will be displayed in the data portal as a negative number, and elevation will be positive;

Hide Coverage button: Toggle the bathymetric data on and off;

Available Products button: When cells are selected, this button will become blue, and will allow you to see what data is available to download for the selected cells. The button will be grey if no data is selected;

Feedback button: Please give feedback on the NONNA Data Portal. The feedback is anonymous, it helps us understand who is accessing our data, and gives us ideas on how we can improve the NONNA Data Portal;

About button: Display additional information about the Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) NONNA Bathymetric Data products;

Logout button: Log out of your data portal session. Selecting the button will take you back to the Website Terms of Use page;

: Choose your language of preference between English and French;

Hint button: Hints are displayed to help with selecting the data. Click the button again to disable the hints.

Selecting and Downloading Data Zoom to the area of data you wish to download. Higher-resolution data will be available to view in most areas when you zoom in closer. Compare the images in Figure 2 to see the different quantity of cells and the quality of data. The left image shows the NONNA-100 cells, while the right shows the NONNA-10 cells in the same location.

Figure 2: NONNA-100 cells (left) vs. NONNA-10 cells (right)

1. To download data, follow these steps: Select the cells for the desired location: To select one cell to be downloaded, simply click using the left click button on your

mouse; To select multiple cells to download, you can hold Ctrl and drag a box, or you can hold

Shift and click multiple cells individually.

2. Click to show Available Products. a. The Available Products pop-up shows the number of available NONNA-100 and NONNA-

10 products in the location of your highlighted cell(s). You can select multiple file types, but they cannot exceed the product download limit. Currently, there is a download limit of 100 products. Figure 3 shows how the “Available Products” pop-up differs when the NONNA-100 tab is selected versus the NONNA-10 tab. As illustrated, where is one NONNA-100 product available for each file format, for the NONNA-10, there are potentially up to a maximum of 100 products for each file format available to download covering the same area.

Viewing and Querying the Data 1. Unzip the file and open it using a GIS program or application of your choice. When the NONNA

product is open in a GIS application, the depths and geographic location can be queried.

Interrogating Contributing Sources to the NONNA Products 1. Download the CSAR file. This supplementary information is only available in the CARIS CSAR

format. Open it using a GIS program of your choice that supports CSAR files (For example, Teledyne CARIS Free Data Viewer – Easy View);

2. Enable the Depth layer to view the bathymetric data, and the Contributor layer to view some metadata;

3. Hover the mouse over a point of bathymetric data. A box will appear next to the cursor showing the data cell name (in this example the name is NONNA10_4360N07940W), the Contributor information and the Depth in metres;

4. A breakdown of the Contributor information is below:

A. Internal Database ID B. Source ID C. CATZOC – Category of zone of confidence in data (see below for explanation) D. TECSOU – Technique of sounding measurement (see below for explanation) E. SURSTA – Survey start date F. SUREND – Survey end date

CATZOC ID (Category of Zone of Confidence in Data)

The following table shows the CATZOC ID numbers with their associated CATZOC value. Refer to the following International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) link to get further information on what each CATZOC value represents:

CATZOC ID CATZOC

1 Zone of confidence A1 2 Zone of confidence A2 3 Zone of confidence B 4 Zone of confidence C 5 Zone of confidence D 6 Zone of confidence U (Data not assessed)
