I woke up nice and early and got the bike packed up and then headed for breakfast The Quality Inn Pres du Lac has a fabulous hot breakfast with a great offering of continental breakfast items as well

With a full belly I mounted up and headed for Woodstock where a fellow rider Kevin Sutherland was joining me to head into Fredericton Kevin is with the Blue Knights and he ensured that I got to our meeting point in Fredericton on time

This was going to be an exciting day for me I was going to meet up with a ton of riders in Fredericton to go to OromoctoGagetown and in the afternoon I was going to get to take part in the changing of the guard

We pulled up to the Lord Beaverbrook Hotel and were greeted by such a site ndash30 bikers and Mayor Brad Woodside himself were there to meet me

The Road Dawgs made me an honorary member of their riding club and I got to share hugs with Sue Lawrence of the Fredericton noise bylaw fight and my old friend Brian Stuart from Toys for Big Boys in Moncton

Quite the crew to meet me in Fredericton

were off with Headley from the Fredericton Ride for Dad acting as road captain

Our fist stop of the day was in OromoctoGagetown where members of CAV and the mayor of Oromocto Robert Powell met us

It was a powerful and moving time as I shared with over 40 riders as to why I was riding across Canada to raise

funds and awareness for the causes of our veterans We shared tears and hugs and then went to Timmyrsquos for a coffee and to plan the rest of the dayrsquos riding

The gang that was able to stay with me for the afternoon took me on some wonderful windy roads away from the main highway

Itrsquos wonderful to ride with the locals in any region ndash they always know the best routes and places to eat

We went to a funky little pub called the Old Boot Pub for a late lunch We had a blast there and Gord of the CAV gifted me with the most amazing ldquoHouse Wiferdquo from the 505 Ladders A tiny little mending kit that he asked me to keep in the pocket of my vest Itrsquos still there and will stay there

The food was wonderful ndash the onion rings

were ENORMOUS The service was great and the company was impeccable ndash what more can you ask for Well ndash Brenda Moxon was able join us Brenda was integral to the fight against the motorcycle only noise bylaw in Fredericton and had just had surgery so she wasnrsquot on the ride with us It was so good to finally meet her and get a hug

After lunch a bunch of us headed back to Fredericton via some more twisty little roads I was honored to inspect the guard at the Changing of the Guard ceremony at 4 pm Jumper gave me his Paratroopers Beret to wear and ensured the it was creased properly and that the Paratroopers badge was placed just right

It was to be a fitting end to an amazing day in support of our troops

You see the Canadian Army was born in 1884 with the establishment of the Infantry School Corps Company A in Fredericton Their coat of arms bears the Beaver as a part of their tradition and connection to Lord Beaverbrook

Lord Beaverbrook Sir Max Aitken who was an expatriate Canadian millionaire employed artists photographers and cinematographers to record the war for future generations and in early 1916 Beaverbrook established

After the changing of the guard I went to Sue Lawrencersquos Hair Spa amp Gallery Sue is a hairstylist and so much more She is a champion of local art and provides local artisans with a place to display and sell their creations

Located in the old Gaiety theatre Sue took all of her creative talent to create a place that is warm inviting eclectic and fun

She offers spa services and has many therapists working here

The place is truly fun ndash there is no other word for it and like the lady who owns it this place exudes a vibrant energy I spent a good amount of time taking in the art the woodwork and all of the interesting sculptures while listening to Sue explain who made this or who created that

I could have spent a lot more time there than I was able to thatrsquos for sure

After my tour of her store Sue went home to get supper ready and I went over to the Lord Beaverbrook Crowne Plaza Hotel and got checked in Headley helped me get my bags to the room He and I had a coffee and gabbed for a bit while I waited for Sue Lawrence to call about dinner

This hotel is amazing Opulent but not stuffy I felt so comfortable here The staff was

incredibly friendly and helpful and the room was to die for They had this wonderful relaxation kit on the bed filled with a spray face cram and foot balms all meant to sooth and relax

After my night at Zeeland (what Sue calls her place) I took full advantage of the kit and fell in love with the calming and soothing effects

I finally got my call it appeared that Brenda Moxon was going to be picking me up

Headley and I said our goodbyes he was off to a BBQ with friends elsewhere but would pick me up in the morning to ride out to Kings Landing with me

Brenda and her hubby showed up with their son to take me out to Suersquos place

We had a wonderful meal shared some wine and conversation and made plans for the next morning to take in Kingrsquos Landing

As many times as I have been to New Brunswick I had never been to Kingrsquos Landing and I was excited as I had heard so many wonderful stories about the place

After a great nightrsquos sleep and a hearty breakfast I packed up my bike Headley arrived and we headed off to Kingrsquos Landing about 40 KMrsquos west of Fredericton where we were to get a guided tour of this historical village

From the minute we walked in to the visitorrsquos centre I knew I was in for a special time

The place is utterly magnificent The furniture the exhibits and the people were totally captivating

I was introduced to the man who would be my tour guide and was totally taken back to the 19th century

This place is immense and is filled with area homes that have been thoroughly researched and is a factual representation of the families who once lived in them The horse and cart that took us around past some of the buildings dropped us off up by the water mill and from there we walked all through the various homes and buildings that are part of the interactive displays

Every home and trading area that is represented has been restored to a different time period

You will see the changes in the clothing the architecture the utensils and the equipment as you move through this living museum

Period dressed actors and actresses make this an interactive museum too They are hilarious and never go out of period

I was taken to spin yarn feed the hogs interact in the general store and be scolded by the school marm

heritage gardens filled with plants that are all but extinct But are specific to the period represented by the farm house they were grown at

I watched a dog-powered butter churn in

action and a horse powered saw as well

At the end of my tour I met back up with Headley and headed to the parking lotI was pleasantly surprised to meet a crew of cadets and their commanding officer who agreed to have their photo taken with me

Sue and her man Eric along with another couple were waiting for the trip to St John

We would be having a late lunch there getting me checked in at my hotel and taking in the New Brunswick Museum It was going to be a busy afternoon and I couldnrsquot wait

We rode under pleasant skies and perfect temperatures to Saint John itrsquos a short ride up highway 7 only 113 KMrsquos and we were meeting a crew from the CAV and a few other riding clubs

The Calgary Version of the Alberta Bound Tattoo and Arts Festival rolled into town last weekend and naturally I had to run down and check it out I choose Friday night because itrsquos Adults Only and I prefer not to have the munchkins tripping

over me or be tripping over strollers while Irsquom trying to stare at art and cleavage (OH admit it you look too) Apparently plenty of Calgarians were out to enjoy the same kind of vibe as I was

Although the show has often taken up a rather large chunk of the BMO Centre here in town I was intrigued to see that only Hall A was used this time itrsquos not as big as it has been in the past however I sincerely think that itrsquos possible that this is a good thing In the past frankly Irsquove wandered down

entire aisles thinking ldquowhat the HELL are these people doing here Itrsquos like Tattoo Nightmares sponsored people in just to create things that need fixingrdquo And some of the products that were being offered for sale were just completely unrelated to anything about tattoos

This time however it seems the show has really tightened its focus on talented artists tattoo equipment and artists in general I really felt like I saw the highest concentration of quality that Irsquove ever experienced at this con so perhaps a little trimming of the fat has been a good thing

Irsquom sure wersquove all seen the countless shops and artists coming and going like a case of antique herpes out there so Irsquom hoping that things are calming down the amateurs and hacks are falling by the wayside and taking up more appropriate careers (repeat after me ldquowould you like fries with thatrdquo) and wersquore going to be able to walk in to more shops and feel confident that an artist that will impress us might be inside

Oh there were still some t-shirt booths but they sold stuff related to artists and tattoos and there was some jewellery and a single sex-toy booth but overall it was a lot more focused on the artists and their craft There was a LOT of ink getting dropped as well which was a good thing to see and even a little henna on a particular wifersquos wrist

Not only tattoos but Alberta Bound was working for charity as well (specifics on the

individual show websites) and in Calgary that was by silent auction for some very unique pieceshellip air brushed hands YES

As well I found Dasha Fox with her husband manning the only booth in the place dedicated to reconstructive tattooing and permanent makeup (Calgary Micropigment) which I found very interesting

Not just an art form anymore the craft is now being employed to help those who have mastectomies or need other kinds of assistive tattooing They also can do dry needling and skin revision which you can learn more about from her site

What was very cool to hear was that the artistic tattooists that were there had given

her a warm reception and truly welcomed her into their community and community it is The enthusiasm shown by this artist the passion for helping others was quite impressive and I will follow this side of the craft with interest

Overall it was a great time and a lot like a family reunion in some ways With artists from as far away as England and Germany Los Angeles and Texas there was certainly a lot to see and I think I might have found my artist after nearly 25 years of searching maybe Irsquoll let ya know Good job Alberta Bound

Wardlow AB The 88th edition of the International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) held September 30th to October 5th in Olbia (Sardinia) Italy is in the books and CGRT founding members Shane Cuthbertson (competitor) and Lee Fryberger (support) were in attendance as part of the Team Canada contingent

625 riders representing 36 countries contested the event which once again proved to be a demanding test of man and machine as extremely dusty conditions highlighted the 1300 km track all the while combined with elevated temperatures averaging 30degC each day Not your typical weatherriding conditions for the 13 member Canadian Team

Team Canadarsquos effort consisted of a Junior Trophy Team (Under 23 yrs) Womenrsquos Trophy Team and two Club Teams Competing in his 3rd ISDE CGRTrsquos Shane Cuthbertson was as a member of the lsquoCanada Westrsquo Club team with fellow Alberta rider Mark Dzikowski and BC rider Craig Murray

Starting Day 1 on his 2014 Husaberg TE300 Cuthbertson was seeded very late in the starting order (3 hrs after the lead riders) which proved challenging at times as extremely dusty conditions combined with a rapidly deteriorating track and slower riders impeded his progress in the 6 timed lsquoSpecial Testrsquo sections

Much to his surprise he was able to salvage an overall time within 10 of the lead rider putting him on lsquoGold Medalrsquo status for the day and resulted in a much better start time on Day 2 In typical fashion the lsquoMoosersquo adapted to the challenges and foreign conditions riding solid each day resulting in a steady climb up the leader board with a final overall ranking of 11th place in the C3 classification

More importantly he maintained lsquoGold Medalrsquo status becoming one of very few Canadians to ever achieve this honor

I am interested in starting up a Women in the Wind (WITW) motorcycle chapter within Regina for lady riders and looking to find others who may have interest in joining as well To read about the history of WITW and see where other chapters are located the official national website is here httpwwwwomeninthewindorg This national motorcycle club has several chapters across Canada including Saskatoon Membership is open to all lady riders all makes and models of motorcycles and all levels of experience This is more about a bunch of ladies uniting to ride and socialize together

Training was tough and the summers hotfriendships are made not hard to spot

Together they sailed to the beaches of Franceoptimism high and not left to chance

Battles fought with chaos aroundmany are lost without a sound

Weeks go by as do the monthssomehow he survives despite his doubts

Cemeteries now mark the names of the deadyears pass with many tears shed

The bugle calls him to this dayto honor those who died this way

Reason In the summer of 2004 my wife and I traveled to Europe and participated in a battle

field tour which featured the 4th Canadian Armoured Division The tour covered the route

taken by this Division and we visited many of the WWII battle fields and cemeteries

Since the tour Remembrance day for us is very special as we better understand the sacrifices

made by our parents generation

Both our fathers served in the Canadian Army my father with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment as

a rifleman

The road is one travelled hundreds if not Thousands of times yet you wonder what imps amp demons are afoot to cause such treachery in your mind for you do not recognize where you areSeriously

The rain hits the windshield like hailIt sounds like breaking glassYou are hunched over shaking jaw clenched hands tight

The air is heavy with urgency as only a midnight call can bringA sense of panic someone is depending on you

You taste the bile as a large truck passes too Too close without dimming their brights as if you dont much matter amp in that split second you are beside each other you truly feel smallminor insignificant

It is ugly this weather yet holds a beautiful fascinationYour mind drifts like the tires in the well-worn grooves in the road that are filled with glittering shiny pretty silver water that turns as black as ink the second the lights pass

The wee bit of water collected by the road from the rain is minor barely enough to make a splash yet it pulls amp grabs at you like the

fingers of greedy starving children

Did you know that fear tastes like blood

We have no control only Choice amp sometimes not even that

The night is impossibly darkTime speeds quickly by yet seems to be slower than usual The unknown that is waiting taunts you Terrifies youIt is faster than you dare goBut you do

Raindrops dance amp shimmer like fireworks sparklers in oncoming lights Especially the bluish or purplish ones OddBut is cold So very Cold

The bridge surface is worn rutted potholed amp surprisingly slick

Your breath is caught somewhere between your throat amp your chest as you feel yourself sliding amp the winds you were outright Cursing but a few moments ago are suddenly your ally amp you owe it one as it tips the scales in your favor amp holds you up amp allows you to proceed

You know this road you really do You know the curves the lean angles the timing amp every damn tree amp area the deer like

Over the years many years youve learned this It is like breathing

What you Havent learned is how to round the corner amp become up close amp personal with an owl

Thanks to my fellow Lead Riders Bob Gordon from Kenora and Doug Hutton from Dryden our group ride from the Fort into Dryden was a huge success on Saturday

The ladies at the Legion in the Fort started us off with a great lunch and then we were escorted through the TSNKRAFT Celebration Tour festivities at The Sorting Gap Marina in the Fort with a ldquobagpipe saluterdquo from the FF Highlanders

A bear crossing the 502 highway near the Monument Pull-Over brought our mile long caravan down to a crawlstop but only for a few minutes ndash being our version of the Toronto 401 rush hour traffic

In Dryden the Legion greeted us with their Sargent of Arms and Army Cadets as trafficparking security followed by a delicious barbequed steak dinner so we were well fed

Dryden Mayor Craig Nuttall was gracious in welcoming us to his hospitable city and shouldknow his citizen Doug Hutton did a marvellous prize gathering job from his many generous local businesses

Congratulations goes to Lawrence Lunam

from Kenora for winning the best poker run hand with an ace high flush

A special thanks goes to the police from Kenora Fort Frances and Dryden for their traffic escorts and ensuring everyonersquos safety and in particular the OPP for their motorcycle escort for the entire ride

It was also pleasing to see so many couples amongst the riders this year itrsquos always nice to see ladies in leather

Another special thank you goes to Kevin Kennedy from Stratton for raising the most money amongst the riders ndash and to all the riders and all their donors from Fort Frances Dryden Kenora Red Lake Sioux Lookout Thunder Bay (and points in between including Bemidji MN) who raised funds for such a worthy cause as our local Alzheimerrsquos Society

Seats

Im often asked what kind of seats I have on the Harley Electra Glides I use in my rider skills show I know the reason they ask is because most people are not happy with their stock seats or the after market seats theyve tried Plus the fact that Ive had the seats we use upholstered in a distinct black white and gold pattern must be the cause of the curiosity

First let me say the seats we use are Harley Davidson Sundowner Solo seats that Ive had reupholstered in the white black and gold pattern The reason I like these particular seats is that they are the only ones I know of that brings the rider 2 inches closer to the handlebars

Whats more the nose of the Sundowner Solo is very narrow which allows the shorter rider to flat foot the bike much easier The fact that the Sundowner is also comfortable is an added bonus

Sitting upright and close to the handle bars gives the rider much more control especially when turning from lock to lock Plus being flat footed makes it much easier to back up the motorcycle when the need arises

Recently I replaced two of my Electra Glides with 2008 Street Glides and unfortunately Harley does not make the Sundowner Solo for any of the 08 models as of yet Since the stock Street Glide seat is too far from the bars and too wide in the nose for shorter riders and both these Street Glides will be ridden in my shows by women I had no choice but to modify the stock seats

Ive done this type of modification myself but since I also wanted some custom upholstery on the Seats I decided to let a pro do the job I took the seats to Anthonys Auto Upholstery Inc at 903 East 93rd Avenue Tampa FL 33612 813-931-8722 But if you like to try this modification yourself heres how its done

1 Use a sharp flat screwdriver to remove the staples from the upholstery and the seat pan

2 Once the upholstery is removed you may find the stock foam is covered with a saran like wrap The saran wrap keeps the foam from getting soaked through when the seat gets wet Remove that wrap by simply peeling it off

3 Next put the uncovered seat back on the bike and sit on it If youre trying to get flat

footed the best thing to do is narrow the nose or the front sides of the seat With a magic marker make some marks on the side of the foam where your thighs meet the seat If you want to get closer to the bars you will

have to acquire some dense foam from an upholstery shop and cut it to fit behind you on the rear lip of the seat This can be tricky so get plenty of extra foam To shape the foam use an electric knife and some rough sandpaper

4 Once you get your foam in place and youre satisfied that you are close enough to the bars mark the sides of the seat

5 Now its time to start trimming the sides Do it a little at a time on each side Try to make the slices as smooth as possible Once youre satisfied that youve taken enough foam off use the sandpaper to smooth out the cuts and shape the seat

6 If youre unable to smooth the foam enough and youre afraid your rough cuts will show through the upholstery dont worry a piece of thin head liner foam can cover all your mistakes Some 3M foam glue will hold the headliner foam in place

7 All thats left to do is stretch the stock upholstery over the foam and staple it in place

If all youve done is narrow the nose the stock vinyl should go right back on if you pull it tight and use plenty of staples

If youve added foam to move you forward youll probably have to have a shop make a new skin

8 You now have a custom seat made especially for you for much less than youd pay for an after market seat that may or may not fit you Many thanks to Anthonys Upholstery staff they did an incredible job on the seats for the new Street Glides

In this world there may be tens of thousands of motorcyclists who owe their lives to Stuart Munro the recognized godfather of rider training in North America Stuart was passionate and relentless in his campaign to introduce a comprehensive training program to the rapidly growing community of novice riders who were at risk of becoming accident statistics as the baby boom generation adopted motorcycling Thanks to his initiative classes that began in a parking lot in Ottawa in 1967 now have evolved and spread from coast to coast in Canada and throughout the United States

Markham - October 2013 - The Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame is pleased to honour pioneering motorcycle racer Tony Miller as an Historical Inductee at the Eighth Annual Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Banquet and Reunion which takes place on November 2 2013 at the Delta Meadowvale Hotel and Conference Center in Mississauga Ontario

Few motorcyclists made a greater mark in their time than Tony Miller a dominant figure during his racing years and a vital influence on motorcycling long afterward He was a fierce competitor a keen enthusiast and a highly skilled technician who later played a key role in training licensed automobile mechanics and was a founding member of the Canadian Motorcycle Association

A native of Belgium Tony emigrated to Canada and gained his first public acclaim in 1935 riding a self-tuned 500 cc Ariel Red Hunter in American Motorcycle Association championship races at Keene NH and Langhorne Pa In the fall of 1935 and during the next two years he would either tie or win the British Empire Motor Clubrsquos inaugural races at Wasaga Beach Ontario

At the 1938 Daytona 200 Tony was leading the event when disaster struck His right el-bow suffered major damage as it caught the handlebar of a motorcycle going past

The injury to the nerves and joint of his right elbow meant that amputation was the only option available It was a shocking end to his racing career but this was the launch of Tonyrsquos extraordinary influence on motorcycling

During the Second World War Miller was involved with dispatch rider training and was charged with drawing up the specifications for the military model WLC motorcycle of which 18000 were supplied to the Canadian armed forces When the war ended Tony and his wife Marcelle were among many Canadians who wanted a home-grown organization to co-ordinate motorcycle affairs in place of the AMA

They were instrumental in the formation of the Canadian Motorcycle Association and Tony served as CMA president in 1946-47 In the mid-1960s he helped the Ontario Motor League design a motorcycle rider training course preparing a

curriculum and instructional materials

This year the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame will honour eight legends and champions It will also be honouring The Corduroy Endurotrade as it celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2013

Forgetful Bob

Bob was in a lot of trouble He forgot his wedding anniversary

His wife was really pissed and started to give him the business

She told him ldquoTomorrow morning I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in 6 seconds AND IT BETTER BE THERE rdquo

The next morning he got up early and left for work

When his wife woke up she looked out the window and sure enough there was a box gift-wrapped in the middle of the driveway

Confused the wife put on her robe and ran out to the driveway brought the box back in the house

She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale

Bob has been missing since Friday

Guys Go Fishing

Four married guys went fishing After an hour or so the following conversation

took place

First guy ldquoYou have no idea what I had to do to be able to come out fishing this weekend I had to promise my wife I will paint every room in the house next week-endrdquo

Second guy ldquoThatrsquos nothing I had to promise my wife Irsquod build her a new deck for the poolrdquo

Third guy ldquoMan you both have it easy I had to promise my wife that Irsquoll remodel the kitchen for herrdquo

They continued to fish until they real-ized the fourth guy had not said a word

So they asked him ldquoYou havenrsquot said anything about what you had to do to be able to come fishing this weekend Whatrsquos the dealrdquo

Fourth guy ldquoI just set my alarm for 530 am When it went off I shut off the clock gave the wife a nudge and said ldquoFishing or Sexrdquo and she said ldquoWear a sweaterrdquo

Gates of Heaven

Three guys die and end up at the gates of heaven talking to St Peter

ldquoSordquo Peter asks the first guy ldquohow many times did you cheat on your wiferdquoldquoNone I had a perfect marriagerdquo

ldquoGreatrdquo says Peter ldquoYou get to cruise around heaven in a Mercedes And you

how many times did you cheat on your wiferdquo

ldquoOnly twice I thinkrdquo says the second guy

ldquoOkay You get to cruise around heaven in a Cadillac And you how many times did you cheat on your wiferdquo

ldquo12 times Maybe 13rdquo says the third guy

ldquoOkayrdquo says Peter ldquoYou get a rusty Fordrdquo

Later that day the guy in the Cadillac sees the guy in the Mercedes crying

ldquoWhatrsquos wrongrdquo

ldquoI just saw my wife and she was riding a bikerdquo

The great debate Sheepskin or notTwenty years ago Irsquod see a biker roaring down the street on his Harley with a white sheepskinseat cover and wonder ldquowhat in tarnation is that rider thinkingrdquo Seat covers made me think of old folks whorsquod ride

bicycles with these massive cushioned pillow looking pads strapped to their seats so for some reason I had a real hard time wrapping my head around seat covers on motorcycles

Irsquom thinking the first step of acceptance for me was when some of my lsquotough guyrsquo riding pals began using them on longer rides and swearing by them I donrsquot think it was by any coincidence that it was about the time we were hitting our ldquofortiesrdquo that these sheepskin seat covers came into vogue

And the way my story goes is about ten years ago while on an out of town extended road trip my lower back and butt began to radiate some serious pain upwards and I was considering a one or two day break in the ride to heal up

Irsquod never experienced anything like it before and considering Irsquod gone from a rigorous gym workout routine for 20 + years and was now fairly inactive muscles and joint aces were

beginning to sneak up on me with regularity

At the prompting of a fellow rider I stopped into a retail store that sold ldquoSheepskin Coversrdquo in a desperate attempt to find some relief to my problem Honestly I thought it was a waste of time and fifty bucks

I recall taking the rest of that day easy by a pool in the Okangan and when we saddled up the following day sheepskin in place I endured no small amount of ribbing and ridicule Well deserved I might add Irsquod come over to ldquothe other siderdquo

In plain and simple terms the sheepskin was magic A full ten hour day of riding and no aches no soreness and while to this day I donrsquot fully know why it makes such a difference Irsquod recommend a sheepskin seat cover to anyone who rides any distances Irsquove used it on all my road trips for about the last eight years or so and I can honestly say it makes a huge difference

Yet there are the unconverted Those folks who look at me and snicker and sometimes fire off the same old wise cracks I used to

launch at others Oh well its like people would say to me ldquoYou can lead a horse to water but you canrsquot make it drinkrdquo

The interesting paradox here is that many people who have discovered Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour were skeptics when they first heard about being a Christian or being born-again

It was only after they ldquochecked outrdquo God on their spiritual journey and discovered that our Creator is very much real and alive and wants a relationship with His creation thatrsquos you and me Jesus Christ is only a conversation prayer away Check him out and see for yourself donrsquot take my word for it
