PLATTSBURGH — Hillary Adel-mann loves kids.

As a mother herself, she knows theimportance of a child’s self-esteem.That’s why she recently donated someof her hair to Wigs for Kids, an organi-zation that provides hair replacementfor children affected by hair loss due tochemotherapy, alopecia, burns and oth-er medical conditions.

“I’ve been growing my hair for a yearand a half because I wanted to donateit,” said Adelmann.

Adelmann and her mother were surf-ing the Internet one day to find outwhere she could donate her hair whenher mother happened upon the Wigs forKids Web site, www.wigsforkids.org.When they learned Wigs for Kids giveswigs to children free of charge, thatsealed the deal, said Adelmann.

“My mom and I, we’re very big sup-

porters of cancer research,” said Adel-mann. “My grandfather died ofleukemia, but, as a parent, it hits youeven more, thinking about how it’d beif your child had cancer.”

Adelmann reached out to hair stylistBob Whittington of Tangles Hair Salonon Cogan Avenue, who cut 12 inches ofher hair, free of charge, for the dona-tion.

“This was new for me,” said Whit-tington, who’s dealt with other organi-zations like Locks of Love in the past.“This had different criteria where somesell the hair to cancer victims. We werehappy to support this one that doesn’tcharge them anything.”

“It’s good, especially when they’regoing through a tough time,” he added.

Donating hair to Wigs for Kids issomething Adelmann said she’d en-courage anyone to do, especially for onereason.

“Just thinking of their smiles — thoselittle kiddy smiles,” she said.

BEEKMANTOWN — After nearly twoyears of work, students at BeekmantownCentral School now understand the dangersof texting and driving — from their peers.

Early last year, the BCS chapter of Stu-dents Against Destructive Decisions re-ceived a grant from State Farm Insurance’sProject Ignition — a program which ad-dresses risky driving behaviors. The moneywas jointly used by the SADD club and theschool’s drama club to create a video abouthow using a cell phone while driving canlead to dangerous situations.

“We wanted to get across that textingwhile driving is dangerous and peopleshould know about this and it can get peo-ple killed and it’s not a joke,” explained 10thgrader James O’Connell, who wrote thescript for the two-minute video, filmed byBruce Carlin of Media Central.

O’Connell, who is a member of SADD and the drama club, played “Bobby,” the younger brother of “Jane,” who is the

driver in the video. During the video, Jane is seen drivingwhile talking on her cell phone. When she receives a text, she loses focus of her driving, narrowly missing a child

crossing the road.“Talking on the phone while driving, everyone

knows you’re not supposed to do it,” said 11thgrader Holly Paolicelli, who played Jane. “Textingstill is kind of questionable.”

“It’s still a distraction,” added O’Connell.Cindy Allen, past advisor for the SADD club

who provided coordination during the project, said having teenagers as the actors is what madethe impact in the video.

“Having it done by your peers, versus havingprofessional actors, makes a big difference,” shesaid. “That is the focus of the SADD club — de-structive decisions, especially by teenagers.”

And, the two clubs aren’t looking to keep thevideo in-house. Allen hopes to make copies of thefilm and send it out to principals in the area, forthem to utilize in their schools. She added she hasalso sent the film to the national SADD club andProject Ignition.

“We want to get the point across,” O’Connellsaid. “Not just here ... we want to get it as far aswe can.”

One less plastic baggieBByy SSaarraahh LL.. [email protected]

PLATTSBURGH — Withmore and more plastic bagsending up in the landfill everyyear, many are looking at oth-er options to this non-biodegradable material.

Wendy Patunoff, a speechand language teacher at BaileyAvenue Elementary School anda member of the AdirondackMountain Club, has created“Green-Loc” — the name she isdesignated for her homemadereusable sandwich bags.

“I started it as a Christmasgift,” Patunoff recalled. “And,after I gave them out forChristmas, people wantedmore. So, I started sewing themand that’s kind of how it gotstarted.”

Patunoff first learned of thereusable bags when a colleaguebrought one into school. Shethen took the idea home withher and worked to create herown version.

With different types of fabricon the outside of the bag and awashable material used on theinside, Patunoff now sells hercreation for $5 a piece.

“It’s amazing, you don’teven realize because Ziplocshave always been so conven-ient, how many you save,” saidPatunoff. “It just saves so muchand I think it just sends a nicelittle message.”

“I’m always proud to see allthe young people using them,”she added. “I think we’ve beenpreaching recycling and notwasting for a long time; not

over-packaging. It’s just fitsnicely with that.”

Patunoff has created twotypes of Green-Loc bags —based on the material used onthe inside. One she has createdwith a waterproof laminatedfabric and the other with rip-stop nylon — both closed withVelcro.

And, she has found theyaren’t only utilized with thetypical “bagged lunch.”

“One of my girlfriends usesit for her jewelry at the gym,”Patunoff said. “Some peopleuse it for makeup, snacks.”

“I just throw [them] quicklyin a bag for organization,” sheadded.

Patunoff ’s Green-Loc bagcreation can be found at theNorth Country Food Co-op, 25Bridge St., or Stony Brook Pot-tery, 72 Mason St., Mor-risonville.

PLATTSBURGH — The second annual Cup-cake Showdown will bring together a uniquecombination — cupcakes and roller skates.

The Crafty Geek Brigade — a community-building organization with the goal of creatingan outlet for anything, everything and everyone— will be holding its Cupcake Showdown at theGreat Adirondack Soup Company Saturday,May 29, from 7-9:30 p.m. Coffee and tea will beprovided and the showdown will include musi-cal performance by local musician Katie Booth.

According to organizer and North CountryLumber Jill member Kim Cummins, the event isan opportunity for local bakers to showcasetheir talents to the Plattsburgh community.

“There are a lot of amazing bakers stuck in thehome that don’t get a chance to be recognized. This is a good chance to celebrate their individ-ual talents,” said Cummins. “Good food, musicand drink always bring people together.”

Bakers may submit entries free of charge to bejudged for prizes in six categories — best taste, best decoration, best use of fruit or vegetable in-gredients, best vegan cupcake, funniest decora-tion, and the grand prize title of Super-DuperBest-of-the-West High-Noon Total-PackageAwesome Cupcake.

For a $5 suggested donation, members of thecommunity can act as showdown judges andsample as many of the confectionary delights asdesired. All proceeds from the showdown willhelp support the Plattsburgh Roller DerbyLeague’s North Country Lumber Jills.

“The variety of cupcakes and ingenuity ofbakers was incredible,” said Erin McGill, lastyear ’s most creative cupcake winner.

Last year ’s event saw cupcakes ranging frombutterflies, to a garden theme, to spaghetti andmeatballs, all created with sugary sweets. Forthis year, Cummins hopes to see more alterna-tive cupcake submissions for the vegan, andfruit or vegetable categories.

Showdown competitors must submit at leastone dozen cupcakes by 6:30 p.m. the day of thecompetition to participate. Competitors are notlimited to enter one type of cupcake and maysubmit as many different cupcakes as desired.

Cummins explained the event has been sup-ported by many local businesses, including theNorth Country Food Co-op, Starbucks and PriceChopper.

PLATTSBURGH — The Adirondack JazzOrchestra has your fix if you’re in the mood forsome big band music.

The group — which has been playing sinceNovember 2003 — has become a regular fixtureat Olive Ridley’s on Court Street, performingthe first Wednesday of every month.

Matthew Pray, the Adirondack Jazz Orches-tra’s musical director, said the band has had “agreat following” since beginning the regularperformances.

“It’s nice to see some of the same peoplemonth after month, but still seeing new peopleevery time,” said Pray. “It’s great that our fol-lowing is made up of both the older genera-tions and young ones as well.”

The AJO, as it has come to be known, features“some of the finest musicians in the area,” saidPray, showcasing the talent of its nearly 20 reg-ular members who hail from across the Adiron-dacks.

What keeps people coming back to their performances, said Pray, is simply their sound.

“We try to incorporate all types of big band music,” saidPray. “If you come out to see us, you won’t just hear the

dance band music everyone thinks of when they hear thewords ‘Big Band.’ We play a lot of contemporary big bandmusic as well.”

Selections made famous by Glenn Miller, Count Basie,

Duke Ellington, and several other greats arewhat makes up the AJO’s repertoire, with theband developing a following for its manylively arrangements.

“It is fun music,” said Pray. “We’ve gothigh school students from several schoolsnow that love to come out and hear the band... We have several elderly ladies who driveabout an hour each month just to come outjust to hear the first set, but never want toleave.”

Most recently, the AJO had the honor ofopening for The World Famous Glenn MillerOrchestra, during a performance at MoriahCentral School May 10. The group was excit-ed to perform the once-in-a-lifetime gig, saidPray, and is looking forward to headliningtheir own performances this summer atSaranac Village at Will Rogers and the JaySummer Concert Series.

“It is a pleasure working with such greatpeople,” said Pray. “Every member of thisgroup is an outstanding person in my opin-ion ... Every month I’m hearing new and ex-citing things starting to happen.”

(Editor’s Note: The Adirondack Jazz Orchestra will perform thisWednesday, June 2, beginning at 8 p.m. They can be followed on My-Space at www.myspace.com/adirondackjazz orchestra or on Facebook bysearching for Adirondack Jazz Orchestra.)

New and stricter laws concerning the use of herbicides for lawn care have encouraged many homeowners to look for alternatives. One of these consists of replacing your lawn with Thymus serpyllum (wild or creeping thyme)... on condition that the site is a sunny one. With thyme, you will create an eco- friendly lawn which requires no watering, no fertilization and... no mowing!

Contrary to popular belief, wild thyme can be walked on without causing much damage and has the advantage of spreading rapidly. Whatʼs more, during heat waves, thyme doesnʼt tend to yellow like a regular lawn would without the necessary water. In addition, the white grub, an insect which is causing more and more damage to grasses in traditional lawns, avoids Thymus serpyllum.

There are two methods of creating a lawn of wild thyme, either by using seeds or plants purchased from a local garden centre. Of course, the latter method is more costly but the result is much faster. As well, seeding is not always easy, especially if there are violent storms in the following days. Allow a distance of 25 cm between each plant and after a few months the area will be completely covered.

At the beginning of summer, your new lawn will be covered with beautiful little white or pink flowers which will last at least five weeks. The scent of the foliage is another advantage of this choice.

With thyme, you will create an eco- friendly lawn which requires no watering, no fertilizing & no mowing!

The dry garden is a little known feature in North American gardens. But the many arid gardens created in Japanese Zen temples are now a source of inspiration for North American landscapers who are introducing this garden composed entirely of plants requiring very little care. The dry garden is an original solution for limiting the use of water while encouraging meditation.

This type of garden is made up of plants coming from poor soils, shrubs and mulch. But mulch doesnʼt necessarily mean wood chips. In the dry garden, also called “karesansui”, you will only find mulch in the form of gravel, sand or pebbles. This type of coverage encourages good drainage and limits evaporation, creating humidity which allows the plants to survive without water.

At the heart of this garden is the dry river bed covered with light coloured gravel; no need to plant flowers and shrubs everywhere. It is sufficient to choose a few elements according to soil and climate criteria. However, this type of garden requires a thorough knowledge of botany in order to choose drought- resistant plants. A specialized landscaper can help you design your project and can give you advice when selecting plants adapted to your region.

Once you have planted your garden, a good watering will be necessary to allow the plants to develop roots. You should be aware that this Japanese garden will teach you patience: several years may be required before the plants develop good root systems. On a daily basis, weeding will be your major inconvenience as it will have to be done by hand.

Once it has been designed and created by a botanical expert, the dry garden requires very little care.
