From the principal

It's so wonderful to be part of our school! It is exciting as you walk around the school and see valuable lessons happening in our classrooms and watching as children are engaging with their learning. I can clearly see and hear the motivation and enthusiasm of students as they personally reflect on the skills they are representing in their learning and continually seeking to achieve growth. We are so fortunate at Darlington to have a team of teachers so dedicated and committed to facilitating an environment that fosters such a love of learning.

Thank you A big thank you to Hugo and Mila's dad, Rory. Rory recently donated numerous office chairs and some stationery. This made for some very happy, and now very comfortable, teachers.

Enrolments for 2020 I am currently working with the executive and teachers in relation to the formulation of classes for 2020. To assist with planning, if you are leaving our school at the end of the year, could you please return the note sent home or contact the office. As sad as we will be to see you leave our school, knowing this information will assist with class formation. In addition, I would appreciate you not asking teachers what they will be teaching next year. My reasoning for this, is that changes are likely to occur and I do not want children to think they might be having a particular teacher and then disappoint them! If your child is starting Kindergarten next year, or you know a child who is, and they have not yet enrolled, please do so as soon as possible.

Safety on School Grounds We are noticing a number of students being left in the front courtyard before 8am. Often teachers are at school before 8am but are planning or having meetings and therefore cannot supervise students prior to 8.30. Please be aware that playground supervision does not start until 8.30am and we request that you do not leave your child unattended before that.

Internet and Social Media A note was recently sent home regarding your permission for school publication permissions. If you have not returned this form could you do so as soon as possible. Please let the office know if you need to update your email address or any other information. It is a busy term and we would not like to see you miss any important dates or information going home.

Kindergarten 2020 We have now had three transition sessions for Kindergarten 2020. What an absolutely spectacular and sparky bunch of treasures we will have joining us next year. Thanks to our Year 4 buddies who have been helping them get to know our school.

P&C Colour Run: What a day!!!! I don't think I have had that much fun in a long time. It was such a delight to see students, staff and parents all having fun together whilst showering each other in splashes of bright colours. Thank you very much to Belinda, Clare and Emily, as well as the many other volunteers who helped make it a highly successful day.

Congratulations to our students and school community on raising a whopping $14,000. What an incredible effort!

From the school Year 5 Leadership Program: Our Year 5 students are currently participating in workshops and meetings giving them the opportunity to build their leadership capacity. They have engaged in a series of activities to develop a greater understanding of what makes a good leader and how to develop those qualities in themselves. Part of this program involves students nominating themselves for the 2020 Leadership council, consisting of 8 students. Leadership speeches and voting will take place in the next two weeks. The 2020 Student Leadership Council will be announced at the end of year assembly on Friday 13th December.

2019 ICAS Assessments: International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) is designed specifically for primary and secondary students and conducted by UNSW Global, Educational Assessment Australia. ICAS are conducted annually in Australia and in over 20 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, Pacific countries, and America. ICAS caters for students in years 2 to 12 and assesses skills in Digital Technologies, English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Writing. This year we participated in English, Maths, Science, Spelling and Writing. (Writing results were not available at time of print). Congratulations to the following students:

3-6 Surf Safety at Bondi Beach On Wednesday 11th December 2019, Years 3 – 6 will be attending the second phase of the Surf Education program at Bondi Beach. We have been participating in this program since 2013 and we believe it is a very important excursion especially as summer holidays are just around the corner and many students will be spending time at the beach. A reminder that to attend, the on-line waiver needs to be signed by a parent or guardian prior to the day. NSW Public Schools weekly drama ensemble program The NSW Public Schools Weekly Drama Ensemble program is now open for applications. If you are a Year 5 -7 student in 2020 you are welcome to apply. The program meets every Wednesday afternoon at the Arts Unit in Lewisham from 5-7pm during Terms 2 and # and they perform at the State Drama Festival in October in Term 4. Students work with some of the state’s best teachers and theatre practitioners to devise original works to enhance their experience and skills in the art of drama. From the P&C

Our Colour Run on Friday was a great success. We raised more than $14,000 and the kids(and teachers) had a wonderful time. Thank you very much to all the parents who came along to drench the kids in colour and a special shout out to Belinda Davey and Clare Davidson, the brains behind the operation. We will be holding a cake stall and selling hand-made Christmas cards at the Carriageworks Christmas Market on December 21. If you can whip up something delicious for us to sell, that would be greatly appreciated A roster for volunteers on the day will go out soon and we will be working with the kids to create some cute and crafty cards. Thanks to Belinda for co-ordinating the recent Return and Earn program and landing our school with this box of goodies. Our final meeting for the year is December 11 and should be short and sweet and followed by a celebratory drink, so please feel free to join us.
