The Story of Saint Valentine

By Peyton Schwab

Once upon a time, there lived a tree spirit who lived in an abandoned forest in

the Land of Despair. In this land, poverty records soared and many people were

famished and ill. The land’s ruler had put them into this economy crisis and kept all

profits the people had earned to himself. This ruler was King James the Fourth of

Poland and was also where the Land of Despair reigned. After a decade of dormancy

and its intentions undefined, the tree spirit awoke. When it saw the king’s tyranny

and the poverty of the people, the tree decided to solve the problem.

Using its unfaltering magic, it produced a young man with a golden heart and

wings of ivory. The man wore a thick red robe the color of roses, and his hair rested

between his shoulder blades. His green eyes were the shade of spring grass and his

quaint face was pale and smooth.

The tree spirit ordered the man to fly to the king’s palace and coax him to have

mercy on the crumbling city. Before the man went off, however, he was given a bow

with three silver arrows: one for justice, one for courage, and one for love. The name

Saint Valentine was bestowed upon him and so with the utensils the tree spirit had

given him, he flew off towards the palace.

When Saint Valentine reached the palace, he heard the king snickering and

giggling about how much capital he had in his palace. In a burst of light, Saint

Valentine appeared in the throne room of the wicked king. The king was enveloped

in terror and he could hardly muster a word. You see, ever since he saw an evil

wizard turn a crooked emperor, one of the king’s companions, into a marble statue,

the king had feared the power of magic.

Saint Valentine demanded the king mend his selfish nature and restore the land

to its original beauty. The king, observing the bow and arrows in a heart-shaped

quiver, found no alternative but to surrender.

Saint Valentine returned the money to the poor people and gave them all a

warm feeling of happiness and bliss. Everyone embraced at the thought of being able

to buy any necessity they required. In fact, they all praised Saint Valentine that day

and even dedicated a lover’s festival to him. This day should be more than easy to

guess. Enjoy your Valentine’s Day!

Visit to Potter

Career and Technical Center

By Adam Snyder

For all 6th, 7th, and any 8th graders who missed Taste of Tech., then this article is for you.

Taste of Tech. is an amazing experience for you to learn about the career you want to have in

the future. In this article, you will learn about a field trip that could change your life.

In 8th grade, most likely in late January, you get to go on a field trip to the Potter Road

School/Career and Technical Center. You get to choose three career rotations you visit, but not

the order they go in. You’re notified where to go from your counselor. The reason they want

you to go to the computer lab, is to pick the three out of thirteen careers you could visit.

Like any other field trip you get a permeation slip. If filled out and sent to your

counselors, then you are 100% ready to go to Taste of Tech. unless you are sick that day or you

forgot to go to the cafeteria. At the cafeteria, you pick up your three rotations. Like the

counselors, the slips and buses are divided by your last name (A-G, H-SA, SC-Z).

Once you get to the Potter Career and Technical Center, their principal tells you what to

do and of course to have fun. Then you go to your first rotation. Each demonstrator presents

a summary of their job and the courses necessary for that career.

11

You’re standing in the middle of a large battlefield. You have your gun and scope with you, ready to use at any time. Suddenly, an ambush appears from behind you! Enemy troops have pinpointed your location. You try to gun down as many of them as you can, but unfortunately you’re shot in the chest. Blood oozes out of your wounds as you feel yourself losing consciousness. And then… your mom calls you in for dinner.

Thank goodness! It was only a video game. You weren’t really under attack, and obviously you didn’t actually die. But what many young T-rated and M-rated game players don’t realize is that sometimes, the effects of that shooting can extend beyond your PlayStation screen.

Violent Video Games = Violent Life?

By Adam Beiter

Nowadays, when many young children and adolescents think of the word “halo”, they

don’t think of the pleasant glow from an angel’s head—they think of the popular (M-rated)

shooter game. When they hear the phrase “Grand Theft Auto”, they think of the new (still M-

rated) action-adventure game, not the fancy word for stealing a car that it derives its name

from. This would be fine—if these video games were normal, pleasant, kid-appropriate games.

Instead, they are packed with violent images, swearing, drugs, and other things that make the

games completely inappropriate. Still, the number of teenagers and even young children who

have delved into these fantasy worlds is shocking. According to ABC News, half of young boys

surveyed listed a game rated “M” (mature) or “AO” (adults only) as their favorite. It’s not so

much the fact that kids are being exposed to violence and other inappropriate material that

worries experts, it’s what these kids could be taking away from the games and applying to

real-life.

Stories of children binge-playing first-person shooter games, then accidentally hurting

someone with a real-life weapon have dominated the news for years. Many studies have

shown that a higher percentage of kids who play M-rated games have hit or beat up someone

in real life. So why is this problem still relatively unsolved? I don’t know the answer, but I do

know that it is going to hurt the future generations of America if we don’t do something about

it.

Desensitization

The first reason I am opposed to kids and teens playing shooter games is because of the

effect it has on their brains. Growing up is hard enough on kids without the violence that is

12

contained on the Xbox discs. Many of the games cause kids to commit acts of violence through

a process called desensitization—in which after repeated use of a fictitious event, one’s brain

is tricked into thinking that it is okay in real life—which it isn’t. Think about it: Would you

commit an act to any of your friends that you do on Call of Duty? Of course not—but if you

play it over and over, the chances of you doing something like that due to desensitization are

increased, because you’re more and more used to things like that. So please, for your safety

and for everyone else, try to quit the violent games. There are many other healthier ways to

send your time.

Disrespect to Our Military

The second reason I don’t like the fact that video games like COD and Halo exist is

because of their similarities to battle situations from past and present American wars.

Sometimes, video game companies try to boost their sales by including this material and

marketing it as “patriotic” or “authentic”. In my opinion, this is actually disrespectful to our

brave U.S. troops, because it is turning this story—their life story—into a violent, mind-

poisoning machine. Just because the American military sometimes engaged in bloody

situations, do you think they like wars? No! And I know because of their integrity and their

dedication to America that they would never support these games if they knew about the

damage and harm they cause. So, just because a violent game is marketed as patriotic, doesn’t

mean you should buy it.

How Do You Quit?

If you have realized from this article that violent video gaming is a major cause of

violence and in some cases, death in kids and teens and it is completely unacceptable in our

society, props to you—but that is only half the journey toward ending the problem. You have

to quit before your mind gets desensitized any further, and you must spread the word as well.

Tell other kids about the dangers of playing shooter games, and if they are hesitant to quit,

remind them that there are plenty of safe, fun games out there, like Minecraft, Madden, and

Super Mario Bros. Note: Just because a friend of yours is a violent gamer, doesn’t mean you

should stop being friends with him/her. Try to convince them to drop the games, and if they

don’t listen to you, it’s fine. They have the right to play them. However, if we get enough

people on our side in the fight against violent video games, we can end it all. So join the fight

today—for your safety and for the world’s.

Furries

By Kadow

The hate

Furries are possibly one of the most hated fandom in the entire world. Furries are

accused of many things, but for the sake of being allowed to post this, I won’t get into. About

0.01 % actually do partake in awful activities and the rest of Furries resent it for ruining the

fandom.

The truth

Furries are actually a nice group of people who are extremely compassionate and have

donated over $200,000 to animal’s charities. The people behind the costumes have welcomed

refugees from war torn countries with hugs from a giant wolf or fox. Many children suffering

from horrible diseases such as cancer have been visited by caring Furries ; an hour of joy with

a giant colorful fox and having so much fun, can takes one’s mind off their disease. Furries

aren’t so bad now, are they?

My thoughts

Personally, I think Furries are extremely misunderstood and they would be a lot more

liked if the stereotypes weren’t thought of as fact. Furries would be a much loved part of

society. Sadly for now, they need to keep their paws away from most people to stay away

from hate, but hopefully, Furries will one day be an accepted piece of this world.

Sun’s Light

A story by Kita_Kit

Riala lives in a forest called Araiedna, and her life is linked to a willow that was

planted by a river called Hilo when she first learned to walk. Her parents and friends

never pay much attention to her and instead, focus all their attention on her willow.

This is Riala’s story in her own words.

One warm spring day, a young dryad named Riala was walking through the forest of Araiedna, not paying any mind to what the

others thought of her. She was small for her age, 14 years old and only 4 feet tall. Her mother and father who were the guardians of the forest, were very concerned that the willow tree linked to their only daughter’s life force would never grow to its full height and stay a

sapling forever.

The willow was the only one in the whole forest and it was planted by Riala herself as soon as she learned to walk. This willow was only

ten feet high and not getting much sun in the place where it sat by the river Hilo. Many other dryads often tried to cast spells of growth and light upon the tree with no success, as the tree had a magical shield

around it that no one, not even Riala herself could penetrate.

The other young dryads often laughed at Riala, saying that she would never be useful and that she should just leave the forest. Riala never paid them any mind and never told anyone about the taunting

as she thought it was unimportant and not worth the attention it would receive. She twined her green-brown hair around her finger

FiCTION

15

and kept walking, ignoring the taunts that followed. She walked to her willow and sat about five feet away, due to the shield around the tree.

“I wish that I could talk to you. I have no one I can talk to these days. The others are all so mean to me now.” She said sadly, her dark blue eyes shining dimly in the dappled sunlight that filtered through the

leaves.

The tree did not respond as was expected since it would be weird if it could. Riala sighed and leaned against the trunk of a nearby oak, staring into the leaves that rustled far above and the blue sky just beyond. After a while, she began to drift off into sleep, the sunlight

warm upon her dark skin and the light breeze gently ruffling her hair.

She woke up with a start about two hours later to a loud cracking noise nearby in the direction of her willow. She sat up and looked toward the tree, startled to find an adult buck with a huge rack of

antlers walking around in the area where the tree’s shield should be! Riala stared at the deer, wondering how it had gotten past the shield without being harmed. She stood up and cautiously approached the creature, careful not to startle it. As Riala came to the place where the shield should be, she stopped and put her hands out, expecting

to feel the magical boundary but instead, her hands just met open air! She walked through the space and soon found herself touching the bark of her willow for the first time. She looked around for the buck

but it was nowhere to be found…

Open until 11:00 P.M.

My experience at the Cheesecake Factory has been a very enjoyable one. The food is all

home-made and quite delicious. They have a wide selection of cheesecakes, appetizers and

entrees. They even have a bar in the back where adults can purchase alcoholic beverages.

The atmosphere is also very intricate and decorative. The designs are beautiful and precise.

However, the food is very rich and tasty, so don’t go overboard! The music is classy as well.

In conclusion, the Cheesecake Factory is a good place to eat and enjoy yourself.

Shea’s Review

By Broadway Geek

I recently went to see 42nd

Street and it was incredible!

The dancing was awesome, the

singing was amazing and the effects were so cool. The setting of 42nd

Street is New York City in the 1930’s. It’s about a girl named Peggy who

travels from Allentown, Pennsylvania to make it big on Broadway. She

faces many challenges, like mean cast members and a very handsome

director. Right when I walked into the theater, there was a gorgeous

golden curtain gracing the stage and a pretty blue light shining down

from above. I never wanted this musical to

end but, sadly it did.

Unfortunately, this musical is no longer

playing at Shea’s Performing Arts Theater.

I rate this 5 stars. It will be well worth waiting

for its return.

Review by Adam Beiter

Flat is a website where users can compose, collaborate on, and listen to other people’s

music. I created my account back in September and several of my friends and I use Flat often.

Flat has really worked to help me improve my composing skills.

Once you set up your account, Flat is absolutely free—unless you want to upgrade to Flat

Power, but you only need to do that if you want to create unlimited private scores. You start

making a score by giving it a name, choosing your instruments, and then placing notes. With

Flat’s playback technology, you’ll know exactly when something sounds good, and when you

need to change it. Or, you can start by searching people by account name or song name. You

may find some weird songs written by people who were just goofing around, but mostly good

songs. If you listen to a song, you can “like it” or comment on it. Once you have started

working on a score, you can invite other people to collaborate on it. Through collaboration, you

can work together to help improve the song in ways that you think best. Others may also invite

you to collaborate on their songs.

In all, Flat is a great website

that I feel every composer or

beginning composer should know

about; it can really help you make

friends with other composers and

improve your composing. Since it

technically is a social media site, be

sure to ask your parents before

making an account.

You won’t regret it!

5/5 stars!

Composing on Flat usually looks like this.

Cracker, The Best Dog in Vietnam

Book by Cynthia Kadohata

by Evan McCarty

If you like books about soldiers of past and current wars, serving alongside their canine

companions, then this is a good book for you. This book is about a dog named Cracker and her

partner Rick who risked their lives in Vietnam.

Cracker started off living with her owner Willie and his family. Willie’s father gets a new job

and the family has to move into a small apartment that doesn’t allow dogs. The family then

sends Cracker to serve in the Vietnam War. Cracker then meets her new partner Rick. Rick is

not happy with Cracker at first because she would never listen. He thought about getting rid of

her and getting a new dog. That’s when everything changed. I can’t say too much, otherwise I

will ruin the book, but I really like this book and have read it six times over, and hope you like

it as much as me. Thank you for reading!

Tattletail Game Review

By Sans

Tattletail is a free-roam horror game that makes you do several tasks to

past the level, and to keep you alive. You’re a kid in a house before Christmas and

you’re alone, your character decides to open their Christmas present early. Your

character must stay alive for the 5 nights because “you’re just a little child who

opens your shir… I mean Christmas present early” as PAPYRUS said. Overall,

this is a short game, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. I would rate this game 4 ½

stars because it was short. Otherwise, I really recommend the game. It’s got a

great backstory that no one has figured out. It only cost five dollars, it’s a pretty

reasonable price and I love it.

Hidden Figures Review

By Adam Beiter

I recently went to see the movie Hidden Figures (PG), which starred Taraji P. Henson,

Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe. It is a movie based on a book by Margot Lee Shetterly,

and it is about three female African-American engineers at NASA in the early ‘60s. As the

“space race” against Russia progresses, the engineers struggle to successfully have an

American man orbit earth, but behind the scenes, the three women—Katherine Goble,

Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson—have a struggle of their own: to overcome the racism

and prejudice of their time and find the acceptance and dignity they deserve. Exceptionally

intelligent, but generally unappreciated, the movie follows their individual stories and their

fight for what they believe is right. I thought the movie was beautifully acted and directed, and

had a very heartwarming ending (but I won’t spoil it!) I would recommend it to anyone who

likes history or is interested in learning more about the fight for racial equality. 5 out of 5

stars! A true classic.

By Lincoln Roza

Luigi’s Mansion is an adventure game released as a launch tile for GameCube, where

you play as Luigi, Mario younger and less popular brother. When the game was first released,

it was panned by critics and fan because it wasn’t a “real” Mario game and it was too short. Is

the criticism true? Let’s find out!

Story: Luigi gets a letter in the mail saying that he won a mansion in a contest he never

entered. He invites his brother Mario to meet him there, but when he gets there he finds that

the mansion is haunted! Luigi is rescued by Professor E. Gadd and tells him that King Boo

released all the ghosts and now it’s your job to collect them all and put them back to the

paintings they were kept in.

Gameplay: The controls are simple; you suck up ghosts with

the Poltergust 3000, a specially modified, high

powered vacuum cleaner made by E. Gadd. Throughout the

game, you suck up all different kinds of ghosts, but your main

goal is to suck up the boss ghost scattered around the

mansion. If you are successful, you get a key to a new room

containing a new boss ghost. You also collect money for a better ending. It does get a little

repetitive fighting the same ghosts over and over. Another complaint I have is that the game is

too short, however, it’s a strong point of the game too, making it easier to pick up and play

without spending hours for your day just to get anywhere.

Final Verdict: This game was a new step in the Mario series

and I think it’s really payed off, even though critics hated it,

it still has sold over 2.5 million copies and is the fifth best-

selling Nintendo GameCube game in the United States. I

love this game. I give it a 5/4, a great game with a few flaws.
