John Campbell and Gary French, owners of Let’s Play, graciously added $750 to the prize fund and were there the entire weekend supporting the 35 women, from around the Northwest and Canada, that competed. The Oregonian was there on Saturday interviewing players and taking pictures for an article that appeared Jan. 19 and is available on their website. Huang, the 2003 NWPA champion and National Regional Tour Champion, was true to form, capturing the hot seat with wins over: Andrena Brown, 7-2; Linda Carter, 7-1; Josie Leroy, 7-3; her road partner, Katherine “The Czar” Czarkowski, 7-5; and Kim Gates, 7-2. Huang, of Vancouver, B.C., then beat former WPBA pro Kerry Impson, who marked her return to pool after a four-year hiatus and two babies, with an admirable second place finish. With solid play Impson, of Marysville, WA, knocked down a field of veteran NWPA players, including: Martha Hartsell, 7-1; Jaclyn Fitchner, 7-4; Mary Olson, 7- 2; before losing to Kim Gates, 4-7. Now for a practical application of the overweight cue ball’s propensity toSMASH-THRU the object ball.

SHOT A: This is a last ditch shot. Even though the object ball is only threeinches out from the center of the side pocket, on many tables you can hitthe point of the side pocket and avoid a scratch or even go on past thepocket entirely from this angle.

SHOT B: Moving the object ball out four inches from the edge of the pocketchanges the shot angle enough to allow the cue ball to safely pass thenose of the side pocket from this angle.

SHOT C: Placing the object ball so the center is even with the edge of thepocket and two ball spaces from the cushion completely removes thechance of scratching at this angle (unless you draw the ball). When leftEnglish (reverse) is used the cue ball heads toward pocket Y.

GREAT ESCAPES – AVOIDING SIDE POCKET SCRATCHES

SHOT D: When running English is used the cue ball hits the cushion wellaway from pocket X and can be driven back up the table for position ifnecessary.

SHOTS C and D can be made from position M without scratching onmost tables so long as you avoid using draw or excessive force. Experimentto see how close to the pocket the object ball can be and still score withouta scratch.

Players who do not understand overweight cue ball action actually think itis safe to leave shots like these.

McDERMOTT CUE

UNVEILS “CUE OF THE

MONTH” PROGRAMBy: Steve Suhm

MENOMONEE FALLS, WI. – January 5th, 2004: McDermott CueManufacturing Inc. has announced the “Cue of the Month” (CotM) programthat will impact the way new cues are released in 2004.In the past, McDermott’s strategy was to release a line of cues, anywherefrom 6 to 25 new cues, at the BCA Show. Their new strategy is to release12 cues a year, and release them one at a time each month in conjunctionwith other new cues released primarily for the BCA Show.“Last year we had a successful launch of 25 new designs at the BCAShow. But we couldn’t expect our dealers to purchase all 25 of those cuesin one order. The Cue of the Month program results in a stronger partnershipwith our dealers when introducing new product as our customers can nowspread out their purchases. Additionally, we’ve given our dealers someadded incentives in discounts, distribution protection, and guarantees togain their support”, says Claude Napier, President and CEO of McDermottCue.January’s “Cue of the Month” cue, the M4-3A “Tucson”, isavailable now. The “Tucson” has a suggested retail price of$300 and features light birdseye maple with 35 rings ofbacote, brass, and urethane. For more information on the “Cue of the Month”program, including color pictures of each “Cue ofthe Month” cue, visit www.mcdermottcue.com/CotM.htm.McDermott Cue Manufacturing Inc. ofMenomonee Falls, Wisconsin is theleading manufacturer of high-qualitytwo-piece billiard cues. Pool players from all over the world are viewing the pages of “The Break”online every month. We were curious as to who was looking at our pagesand what pages were being viewed so we did some research on our site.Onthebreaknews.com receives over 120,000 hits a month. The largestportion of those hits coming from the United States, followed closely byCanada. Some of the more interesting places viewing our site are: CzechRepublic, Singapore, US Educational, US Military, US Government, Austria,Japan, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Belgium,Netherlands, Australia, Mexico, Finland, Poland, Germany, France, Greece,Philippines, Hong Kong, Hungary and Lebanon. Amazing the power of theinternet when pool players the world over can read about the events wehave going on in our part of the world. The front page of “The Break” is viewed the most, followed by theTournament Trail (page 34), then comes the Washington weekly section(page 32), Poolhall Junkies and the Oregon Weekly section (page 33).Rounding out the top ten pages viewed are: Pool on TV (page 26), FavoriteLinks, WPBA Program Guide, “Sarge’s” Instructional articles and theArchives of Past articles. We average about 5300 hits per day and themost popular viewing time is 6 PM.Besides the internet viewing there are also tens of thousands of pool playersthat pick up “The Break” from their favorite bars, taverns, pool halls andbilliard suppliers. And a special thanks goes to the dozens of dedicatedpool players who deliver “The Break” each month. We appreciate all theadvertisers, promoters and players that make our work so rewarding. The billiard industry is thriving and telecasts of major tournaments arehaving an impact on the reemergence of interest in pool. Both ESPN andESPN2 have been airing a large amount of billiard telecasts and havebeen receiving favorable viewer numbers. In 2003, ESPN aired 94 eventsand had an average of 387,000 households tuned into a telecast. WhileESPN2, aired 219 events and had an average of 223,000 householdswatching the coverage.2004 is starting off to be a banner year. As of January 15, 2004, ESPNreported an average of 780,000 households tuned in to watch a billiardsevent. There were 2 events aired so far on ESPN. ESPN2 reports 238,000households watching billiards with 32 events telecast. These are amazing numbers and show the strength of our industry. Moreand more viewers are tuning in to watch pool on TV. Just look at the effortsof promoters to get their events aired on the major sports channels as wellas the cable networks. The more exposure our sport has the more interestwill be generated by the airing of tournaments and more people will beparticipating in our sport. Whether for tournament play or enjoyment, playingpool has become a great way to spend time with family and friends. Theincreasing popularity of pool will only serve to legitimize our sport and lendto it’s credibility. Promoting of pool at the Olympics and other World Gameswill have greater acceptance and carry more weight with more exposure.Already many of the individual State Olympic programs have recognizedthe growing popularity of pool and have added this sport to their list ofcompetitive games.Jeanette Lee competed in and won the Gold Medal at the 6th World Gamesin Akita, Japan in 2001, a stepping stone to the Olympics. Pool is gainingmore and more worldwide acceptance and has been taken from thestereotypical smoke-filled poolhall out into the mainstream. Pool is no longeronly enjoyed by a select group of diehard individuals. It is now enjoyed bymillions of players the world over.

This month’s Artistic shot is from the Bank/Kick Discipline and has aDegree of Difficulty (DOD) of 7. This is another shot that has recentlyappeared on ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic. This bank shot is also the openingshot from the movie “The Hustler” where Fast Eddie hustles the bartender. To set this shot up, place object ball D one half diamond segment to theright of A pocket and frozen to the rail.Next, place the cue ball in a straight line and frozen to D ball per diagramgraphic. The other two object balls are one diamond from the cushion thatobject ball D is frozen to. The objective of this shot is to shoot the cue ballinto D ball. The cue ball and D ball will come out from between the twoother object balls, separate and D ball pockets in D pocket. The cue ballgoes to the right and avoids D ball travel line. The two solo balls must notbe disturbed by any means. A scratch is allowed and the cue ball and Dball may make additional contacts after initial hit. Here are a few helpfulhints on how to execute this great shot. Instead of aiming straight at the Dball and just using high right English for the bank, I begin by aiming straightin line with D balls vertical axis and then pivot the butt of my cue to the left. The amount of pivot is so that the center of my cue shaft is aimed betweenone quarter and three eight’s in from the right side of D ball, in other wordsI’m cutting the D ball to the left slightly. The elevation of my cue is between10 to 15 degrees. Remember this will be high right English. I also use anopen V bridge. Be sure to get your bridge hand out of the way becauseboth balls will quickly come back at your hand. When you master this oneyou will definitely impress your friends. Next months Artistic shot will befrom the Stroke Discipline and have a DOD of 8.

If you are just beginning to use side spin (english)or are trying to teach a beginner to use it, youhave almost certainly noticed that the requiredaiming is different. Usually the problem is that

you need to compensatefor squirt (sometimescalled deflection). Thecue ball does not start outmoving parallel to thecue stick when you useside spin, but insteadmoves off that line alongsome angle that can beas large as four degrees, and the stick needs to beturned the same numberof degrees in the otherdirection to get the aimright. Most players learn tocompensate for squirt

subconsciously; they just aim over some so thecue ball lands where it needs to. Often theseplayers are completely unaware that they arecompensating, and might even think their stickis parallel to the line the cue ball takes. Thehuman mind has an amazing ability to ignore thelittle details and get on with the business at handwhich is putting the ball in the pocket. If you’re teaching or learning, however, I think it’sbetter to know the details of what’s going on. I

think you can learn faster and when things do gowrong, you’ll have some idea of what it takes tofix them.In the diagram is a typical shot that a beginnermight have trouble with. The goal is to make thecue ball with enough inside english (right-handside spin) to carry the cue ball around twocushions to the other end of the table. The shotis set up so that the shooter needs to hit abouthalf of the object ball to make it, which is a 30-degree cut shot.Usually, a beginner will try to do parallel aiming,so after the cue ball moves to the left (due to thesquirt from the right english), the shot will beovercut. Here is how “backhand english” is used to dothe necessary compensation. First aim the shotwithout english, so the stick points directlythrough the center of the cue ball. For a half-ballshot, the stick should also be pointed at exactlythe edge of the object ball.Take a few strokes along this line to make sureyour aim is right without spin. To make sure yoursetup has the right angle, you could even shootthe shot and adjust the positions of the balls asnecessary.Once you are sure of the no-english line, bringyour tip out to near the cue ball without touchingit — you should be able to get within a half-incheasily. Now, keeping your bridge hand in place, move your backhand (grip hand) to the left to

bring the tip over on the cue ball to the right foras much side spin as you want.Next, take a couple of strokes along the new line.It may look wrong and you may be tempted tomove your bridge, but suppress that urge. Onceyou are satisfied that you have the spin you want,

TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR

OTB

by: Don “Cheese” AkerlowI usually find myself on Sundays traveling to the Hub Bar in Belgrade for aweekly pool tournament. Steve Plant, usually runs the tournament whichis a $5 entry, $2 green fee, alternating 8 and 9 Ball and straight pool. OneSunday last month, there were about ten of us who found ourselves wantingto shoot something relatively new to us, called Bowlliards. The game is played with scoring like bowling, the difference and uniquenessthat I find in this game is you are not playing a game against anotheropponent. If you miss you shoot again (see rules below), only your totalscore determines a winner. You rack ten balls and break. If you scratch onthe break, no penalty, but if you make any balls on the break, they arespotted. Now the game begins, you get two chances to make all ten balls. If you do it in one turn it’s a strike. If you do it in two turns it’s a spare. If youmake four balls in your first turn and three balls in your second turn, youtotal seven and so on. You are not playing against anyone just yourself andthe rest of the field at the end for total score. This would be a great game for practice instead of racking and bangingballs around by yourself. It can be harder than it appears to be, to scoreover 200.

RULES (taken from the BCA Official Rules and Records Book)Except when clearly contradicted by these additional rules, the GeneralRules of Pocket Billiards apply.TYPE OF GAME: Bowlliards is a game that applies the scoring conceptsof bowling to pocket billiards. It is one of the few games that can be quiteinteresting as a solitary exercise since, like bowling, there is a perfectgame score to strive for, and a player can measure his improvement quiteeasily over the course of time playing Bowlliards.PLAYERS: Any number.BALLS USED: Any ten object balls, plus cue ball.THE RACK: Standard triangle position (front apex ball on foot spot), usinga 1-2-3-4 rack configuration.OBJECT OF THE GAME: To score a perfect score of 300 points in 10frames (innings) in solitary play. In competition, to score a higher pointtotal in 10 innings than opponent(s).SCORING: Each legally pocketed ball is scored as one point, regardlessof ball number. The points scored as per the “Rules of Play” below aretreated exactly as in the pinfall in bowling.OPENING BREAK: At the start of player’s inning (frame), he has a freebreak (no special balls-to-cushion or other requirements once break strokecommences, and a jumped or scratched cue ball is without penalty). Anyballs pocketed on the break are spotted, and player then follows his breakby beginning scoring play with object balls in position and cue ball in handbehind the head string. (The opening break takes place at the start of everyinning.)RULES OF PLAY:1. A legally pocketed ball entitles shooter to continue at the table until hefails to pocket a called ball on a shot, or until he has scored the maximumtotal per inning possible (10). Player may shoot any ball he chooses, butbefore he shoots, must designate a single ball that he will pocket and thepocket into which the ball will score; he need not indicate kisses, caroms, combinations or cushions (none of which are illegal).2. Player has two chances to pocket the 10 possible balls of each frame. If player legally pockets ten consecutive balls on his first chance of a frame, that frame is completed and player scores the frame exactly as a strike inbowling. If player fails to pocket ten consecutive balls on his first chance,he takes his second chance immediately. If he succeeds in legally pocketingthe remaining balls of the ten on his second chance, the frame is completedand player scores it exactly as a spare in bowling. If player fails to legallypocket all ten balls in two chances, the frame is then completed and isscored just as in bowling: a “strike” in the tenth inning earns two extrashots, a spare one extra shot.3. If players tie for high game total in competition, additional extra inningsare played alternately by the tied players, with the first player posting asuperior score to that of his opponent(s) being the winner (“sudden death”).ILLEGALLY POCKETED BALLS: On the break, illegally pocketed ballsare spotted prior to player beginning his scoring play (first chance of theframe). During scoring play, illegally pocketed balls are spotted.OBJECT BALLS JUMPED OFF THE TABLE: All spotted. The stroke isa foul, and the penalty for fouls is followed.CUE BALL AFTER JUMP OR SCRATCH: Only applies if occurring asplayer’s first foul of a frame, player has cue ball in hand behind the headstring to begin his second chance of the frame.PENALTY FOR FOULS: One point is deducted from offender’s score foreach foul. If foul ends player’s first chance of a frame, he has cue ball inhand behind the head string to begin his second chance of the frame.

It started out as a mere thirty player men’s only tournament in its first year, held solely at the Pastime Bar in Libby, Montana. This annual event hasgrown to become a popular tournament among many, many players fromall over the Northwest. The tournament is now held at two locations, (The Mint Bar and VFW)utilizing ten tables, with a men’s and women’s division. We here at theTom Scott have enjoyed seeing some very talented men and womenplayers make their way here to test their skills. There is always a vastrange of skill levels that attend this tournament, from the beginner to theadvanced.

Past winners from the men’s division include:Kerry Resch (Libby, MT),T R Olson (Great Falls, MT),Shannon Gibson (Great Falls, MT),Jeff Boucher (Helena, MT),Sean McKay (Medicine Hat, Alberta)with Olson, Gibson and Boucher each winning this tournament twice inthe past years.

Past winners from the women’s division include:Darlene Freeman (Spokane, WA),Keva White (Spokane, WA),Cheryl Rosean (Kalispell, MT),Jane Plant (Belgrade, MT),Janet Dunks (Butte, MT)with Keva White a.k.a. Keva Heavner being the only winner of thistournament twice.Last year’s event saw in excess of one hundred players compete for thetop honors and their share of the prize money. Over six thousand dollarswas paid out in prize money between the Calcutta, mini tournament Fridaynight, second chance tournament and the main event. We hope to seeyou all again here this year.

My plans had originally been to travel to Post Falls to cover the McDermottTour Tournament at theFalls Club. On Friday the23rd I spoke to Nita theTournament Directorthere and told her of theimpending storm andweather that was here inMontana. She also toldme of the storm that wasthere. This gave me anopportunity to play at alocal tournament. Ingetting to and leaving the

Eagles in Bozeman, Montana you mayhave thought you should have had asnowmobile or ATV, as a huge snow stormcame through the state, but 34 men andwomen (full field + 2) braved theelements. Dick Jones and his staff at theEagles worked hard to make thetournament a success. All thetournaments at the Eagles have servedlunch, this was no exception with Pastiesand mushroom gravy, salad and potatosalad, and free coffee all day. Dick, asTournament Director, explained the rules,Texas Express, race to 7 and 5 on the

losers side and the three foul rule willapply, winner breaks. It was a good dayto be inside and any day is a good day toplay pool.

Well, finally, some of you readers areresponding to my articles. I had begun towonder if anyone was reading them. They dotake a part of my week once a month to getthis column in the paper, so I do feel greatwhen I get a call from someone who took thetime to read them. I have been getting callsfrom as far away as Tennessee respondingto the web that The Break maintains and lotsof calls on the new table at the Rock Creek

Road House. A lot of people have been anxious to try the table, but theweather has been rotten in the Portland metropolitan area, but those whohave made it have wondered why the table plays so well, so I thought Iwould devote this article to my thoughts on how to make a table play well.To have a table play well some simple things must happen with thestructure. If you shoot a ball in a straight line with no side spin, it shouldcontinue in a straight line until it falls into a pocket or stops on the table. Ifthe ball is shot into a rail the ball should bounce and the rail and tableshould not bounce. The ball should travel in a correct series of angles ifshot in an obtuse angle. Not all tables are created equal and even thesesimple rules are overlooked. If an engineer looks at the flat surface of this size he would see a flat planesupported by four columns. He would draw gravity as a weight suspendedfrom the center of the plane. To overcome the gravity the support betweenthe four columns must be very strong and a heavy grid supporting thecenter. The frame that we used was an “Old Mission”, manufactured bythe Brunswick Balke Collender Co in the early1900’s, and answered the above criteria to thefullest. It was built to be solid and massive yet havestyle and flair. The heavy frame tips the scale atover 1,000 pounds. We added a new set ofoversize slate for another 600 pounds and built anew set of rails and aprons. We made the rails of7/8 thick Poplar and 7/8 thick Quarter Sawn Oak.Heavy steel plates tapped to accept a 3/8 bolt wereinserted in them so that the rail is firmly attachedto the slate and table, so that when the ball hitsthe rail it will not give but the ball will bounce. The Tournament 2000 cloth by Gorina of Spainkeeps the ball rolling. I have been using the Gorinacloth for the past month instead of Simonis andso far have been well pleased with the results. LikeMurdock from the “A Team” used to say “I love itwhen a good plan comes together”.I used the Tournament 2000 at Touche’s. Theyhave used Simonis 760 and 860 so I hoped to hear.Monday night we had a chance to play J DStubenberg’s team and J D had a chance to trythe cloth and had nothing but good things to sayabout the way it plays. J D is a “7” and great coachwith a great group of players.Cheese gave me a sample of the new Quick-Clean and I demonstrated itat Touche’s. They have a real problem keeping the tables clean, so I hadplenty of chalk and dirt to work with. It takes 10 minutes to brush the 4 ½ x9 tables and it is an exercise in moving the dust from one end to the otherand settling down back on the cloth when you get to the other side. Thatmeans another 10 minutes to go back over it again. No one likes to do it soit doesn’t get done very often. With the Quick-Clean, you stand at one sidepocket and spray the opposite side of the table. Go then to the other sidepocket and spray the other side. I used the wiper and was able to renderthe table spotless in 2 ½ minutes. Zareh the owner was impressed andplans to order a set. The Microfiber cleaner gets the crud from under therail and pulls the dust and chalk and kills the shine all in one pull of thewiper. What a pleasure for the players not to come up with the Black Bridgehand and saves the distraction of looking at the heap under the rail as youare aiming at the pocket. The only problem for us mechanics is that withthe grit removed daily from the cloth, we won’t be covering them as often.

Spokane, WA - On the weekend of January 17th –18th McQ’s Billiards hosteda class “B” 8-ball tournament. Due to a minor mishap by a

player the field came up 1 entry short of a full field. Thelevel of play was a very good mix of high “C” players

and a wide range of “B” players. In fact if I took thisfield and played it all over again I am quite sure wewould have a different winner each time.Sam Moul opened with a 5-2 win over Johnnie Landisand went on to defeat Mathew Dick 5-1, Larry Wayne5-0, Scott Nelson 5-2, Clay Belvoir 5-3 and HerbRichter 5-1 to claim the drivers seat. Sammy’s

opponent in the finals was Herb Richter. Herb startedhis run through the tournament with an opening round

win against Gale Louie 5-0, he then went on to defeat BobPike 5-4, Randy Sterling 5-3, Rich Benson 5-1, and Mark Johns

5-1 before his loss to Sam in the winners final. After getting by Clay Belvoirin the B side final he did get Sam in the first set of the finals but Samprevailed in the end. Letter to the Editor:Mr. Akerlow,

Thanks for your editorial (p.5, Dec. 2003) addressing the vanishing breedthat we call family. I thought the movie Pool Hall Junkies was a great flick. And this comes from one who likes pool and movies. Wouldn’t you agreethat any exposure in mass media is better for pool than no exposure? Iwould. It would take a lot of broken bones and curse words to turn offanyone to pool that would ever pick up a stick in the first place. The moresensitive (sensible?) among us exist in an age of hyperviolence. The moredesensitized (young?) among us live in a world called Normal. It’s an unfortunate fact that American media only releases what will beprofitable. I must insist that any movie that makes people want to go playpool is a positive thing. I think “Pool Hall Junkies” did just that. Comparedto many, many films, the ugly side of PHJ was quite tame.Cheers,Macx Butcher, Arcata, CASend your comments on Pool and related subjects to “The Break”,P O Box 100, Three Forks, MT 59752 or email: [email protected]

Shooters Sports BarLewiston, Idaho

by: Don “Cheese” AkerlowShooters Sports Bar located in Lewiston, Idaho, is celebrating their firstyear anniversary in April. It was almost a year ago that Max Martin movedhis successful business into a new location. Max and his son Zane operatethe poolhall and bar at its new location of 1618 Main Street in downtownLewiston, just a few blocks from the old location. While Max is concentratingon the pool aspect, Zane manages the bar and darts. The new Shooters is housed in a 7,000 square foot space with six barboxes to play on, a full bar and a Billiard Pro Shop. The Pro Shop is onestop shopping for cues and accessories, table recovering and repair andis the new distributor for Quick-Clean in the area. When Max first decidedto promote pool in Shooters he remodeled his room to accommodate thepool players. At that time there were never more than 8 teams in the localVNEA league. His first year in league they went to 14 teams, then 26 andnow the league boasts over 32 teams. He sponsors BCA, VNEA and alocal Valley (slop pool) league. At the beginning of the Fall Season everyyear the players decide on how they want to sanction the league. Theoptions are BCA only, VNEA only or both. The bar sends at least 3 teamsto Vegas each year (the most was 5 teams) and 8-12 players to the IdahoState Championships. The design of the new poolroom was done with the pool player in mind. There is a minimum amount of player interruption from one table to thenext. The room is configured so that the tables sit at a 30 degree angle, partly for esthetics and partly for convenience. With this arrangement thereis enough room between the tables, no “sand traps” anywhere as Max putit. You do not end up playing up against barstools, other players, spectatorsor poles. There is seldom any waiting to shoot, and the players arecourteous and considerate.Every Friday night the Shooters holds a weekly tournament that alternatesbetween 8 and 9-Ball. Max boasts of his computerized tournament softwarethat will display the bracketing on his big screen TV. The program willrandomize the players, call the matches, assign tables and even add inlate arrivals. On April 3-4, Shooters will host their first big tournament in the new location, for this Max will bring in a couple more tables. The event is the newestMcDermott Tour Stop and has a $1500 added guarantee to the tournament. There are more special events in the works, possibly even a pool workshop/exhibition, details are still being worked out.We at “The Break” would like to congratulate Max on his efforts to promotepool. He is one of the reasons that pool is thriving, so stop in, shoot somepool and tell him thanks!

1st Anniversary Tournament

Mike Zimmerman

J D Doherty

By Rick Blackorby

Renton WA – January 17-18, 2004At long last, (it seems such a short time), our first anniversary has arrivedand gone. Both Sean and I wouldlike to thank those whoparticipated and helped us put ona successful tournament. Thefirst day started off a little late, butwas soon running smoothly. There were 41 players, so lots ofbyes to be dealt with. By thesecond round we were using alltables for most of the day, and gotdown to the money by 6pm. Thebest match of Saturday was alsothe last. Both Stan Tourangeauand Mike Zimmerman were fightingto stay on the winners side, butone had to go. This thrillingcontest went back and forth withneither more than one game up. Of course it went to hill-hill with Mike

coming out on top.Day 2, Sunday, was more of the same grind itout play. We were into the money andeveryone wanted the biggest slice. The mostpersistent player was JD, who Stan put intothe 1 loss column in the 2nd round onSaturday. JD then knocked out Zak Leach,Rory, and Cocomo that 1st day. On Sundayhe resumed his march to the finals getting byJames Davee, revenge on Stan, Tim Tweedell,Val, and Raul.In the meantime, Zimmerman walked pastLarry C., Kris Iverson, and Stan on Saturday.

On Sunday he also put Tim T., and Raul into the 1 loss side. In the finals,it was Mike Zimmerman over JD Doherty in 1 match to seal the deal.To all who participated, a hearty thank you and we will be looking forward tothe 2nd Anniversary Tournament in January of 2005.1st $530 Mike Zimmerman2nd $300 JD Doherty3rd $200 Raul Abenojar4th $150 Val5-6 $100 Michael, Tim Tweedell7-8 $75 Don Wirtaman, Stan Tourangeau9-12 $50 Will T, Randy C, James D, and Loy

RESURRECTION

by: Dean Shane Cassem

FinaleIn Part One, Carter Keating, college graduate and former SpecialOperative returns home from a tour of duty in the Colombian jungles.Gracie, his significant other, has dumped him for someone else. Heenrolls in the local police academy and meets new friend, JoeLauterette. Later, Elizabeth, a new companion, seeing his love forthe game, inspires him to enter the Texas Eight Ball Championships. The story continues as he ponders the decision. Part Two findsKeating and Lauterette at a local restaurant, talking about his formerpassion for the game, and the role that Jimmy the Stick Gadwell andold Charley Sturgis had in teaching him to be a young prodigy atonly eighteen. Part Two ends as Keating decides to fish his cuesout of mothballs and prepare for the tournament. Part Three hasKeating working on his game in Sharky’s, a popular Houston hangout. In the interim, Danny the Brat approaches Keating for a game. Averbal confrontation ensues and the Brat storms off pouting. LaterLinda Jo Minard, a local singer and pretty good player, approachesKeating while he practices. Part Four continues as Keating befriendsLinda Jo. As he leaves Sharky’s another confrontation almostdevelops between Keating and the Brat’s cohorts. Later, Keating,Lauterette, Linda Jo, and Elizabeth anxiously await the pairings forthe Texas Prelims. The story continues as Keating and his firstopponent, an Asian pair off in an eight ball race to five. In Part Five,Keating beats the Asian handily and wins a testy second match. Givena schedule break, Keating skates out for a burger. The Brat’s croniesconfront him in the parking lot and Keating deals with the two bullies. In Part Six, someone steals his Corvette from the Galleria parkinglot. Short on time, he runs back to Sharky’s in a cold rain and is rundown by a biker and injures his leg. A kind old man takes him toSharky’s just in time to make his match, which he somehow wins. InPart Seven, Keating and the Brat face off in the prelim finals. Aftera bitter, intense match, Keating advances to the state playoffs. PartEight features Keating in the state finals held at the Galleria complex.A tough competitive match develops between Keating and Tony EverReady Reyes. Down in the match to Reyes, Keating takes a break, isconfronted by the ghost of old Charley Sturgis, a former teacher, and then returns to the match. In Part Nine, Keating struggles forcontrol of the match. His persistence pays off when finally Reyesfouls and leaves Keating with ball in hand. Reyes is not to be denied.Part Ten builds toward the finale as Reyes hypes the match andKeating meets the challenge.EVER READY NARROWED HIS EYES AND GLARED AT ME. HECOMPLAINED some more to the referee, then like an angry bull stompedback to the head string. He let fly with another shattering break. Five balls flew into the pockets. The break had been almost perfect. Ever Ready had hit the rack somurderously that one of the object balls had flown off the table onto thefloor.“Foul,” the ref called out.Ever Ready glared at me hatefully and sat down. The crowd applauded. Ever Ready stood up, waved then sat down.Methodically, I studied the table, made the first shot and then calmly ranout and made the eight. The crowd applauded appreciably.“Warmin’ up to you, Keating,” Joe growled.Nod.Seven five.Ever Ready moved restlessly in his chair then sneezed loudly. Undisturbed,I strolled over to the foot string and eyed the rack. After chalking my cue, Ipositioned for the break, stroked and followed through. Only one ball fellin. However, the table spread beautifully.I ran out.Seven six.Ever Ready tried to distract me. It didn’t work. What Charley Sturgis had

taught me years before had burned itself into my memory. Focused, Ibroke and ran out. Then again. And again. After the fourth rack, the crowdswung completely my way. The applause after the fourth rack wassustained.“Geez, no wonder they called you the surgeon,” Joe said.Nine seven. I had the lead.In the next game the cue ball locked up between the eleven and the rail. Itried a slop shot and came up empty.Ever Ready to his credit, took his time and went out.I racked the balls. The crowd quieted. All four floors now had peoplestacked around the railings.Ever Ready broke the rack. At the last nanosecond, the cue ball driftedinto the side pocket.Scratch. My shot.I broke the rack, made three balls and ran the rack.Ten eight. I was on the hill.I thought about Charley Sturgis. “Total focus, Carter, especially when youcan nail the lid on the coffin.”Eyeing the break I felt a strong temptation to unwind a monumental breakand end with a flare. Resisting the urge, I smooth stroked the cue ball

bring the stick straight back and straight through the cue ball along thatnew line with enough speed to carry the cue ball to the other end of thetable.Did you make the ball? If not, which side did you miss on? If you hit the balltoo full, the backhand method gives too much compensation for your bridgeand cue stick. If you still want to try it, you will need to use a longer bridge. If you over-cut the ball (hit it too thin), the compensation wasn’t enoughand you will need to use a shorter bridge. The length of the bridge is afactor because it determines the angle of correction for a given amount ofside spin. For most house cues, this method of compensation works fairly well, because they have quite a lot of squirt. Low-squirt shafts, such as Predatorand the new Meucci shafts, don’t need nearly as much compensation, sothis technique will work only if you have a very long bridge.Backhand english is also referred to as the “aim-and-pivot” method. Thereis another technique that some players use, and that is to adjust fromcenter ball to side spin on the final stroke; they come back straight fromthe center of the ball and then on the final forward stroke, they swerve theirarm in or out to get the side spin. I think this last method, which I call “aimand swerve,” is a recipe for disaster, but with enough practice, some peoplecan make it work.Backhand english doesn’t work for all people or all sticks, and it certainlydoesn’t work for all shots even if it does work some of the time, but it is auseful way to introduce side spin squirt compensation to beginners.(Visit the SFBA web site at www.sfbilliards.com for a free set of practicedrills in the Basic Clinic handout.)

We had a lot of thingsgoing on.” Their first tournamentcancellation was due to theremodeling of their kitchen andrescheduled for the January 10-11date.Since we have had dozens of phonecalls and emails about the

Manyplayers expressed to us that theyhad planned on signing up for thetournament after the holidays, onlyto find out that it had already beencancelled. firmly on the break. A ball popped into the sidepocket immediately, the table spreadhandsomely.I examined the table. Crossing over to Joe, Itook a drink of tea and eyed the table over therim of the glass. Roaming back to the table, Iset myself, took my time and made the first shot. The crowd clapped lightly.Breaking out the cluster on the next shot wasrisky but necessary. A bad roll and I couldscratch. Opting to go for it, I made the five, hitthe rail and slammed lightly into the cluster, hopingfor a decent roll. The cue ball kissed out into the center of the table. The crowd groaned. Although I’d gotten a goodroll on the cue ball, three of the four object ballsin the cluster died against the side rail while thetwo ball rolled down the table and parked againstthe lower rail. All of Ever Ready’s balls however, were spread beautifully.D-Day. If I missed, the table and the momentumwould be his, including the break. Carefully, Istudied the possibilities. If I tried a thin cut down the rail, my position wouldbe suspect at best.To control the cue ball, I’d have to cross banktwo consecutive shots and get enough angle toget down the table on the two.Ever Ready coughed then cleared his throat. Hemoved deliberately in his chair. I hovered overthe six and eyed it against the rail. If I hit itperfectly and drew the cue ball back enough, Icould make the one, stick the cue ball, make thefour and get on the two at the end of the table.Bearing down on the six, I visualized the shot inmy mind and at the right moment followedthrough. The six popped across the table firmlyinto the opposite side pocket. The cue ballobeyed my stroke and crawled back a few inchesand stopped. The crowda p p l a u d e dlightly.Ever Readydrank his coffeeand set the cupdown thenreached acrossthe bar table.Suddenly, thecoffee cup wentflying to the floor, the coffee with it.The crowd quieted.I ignored Ever Ready and focused on the oneball. This time I’d have to avoid the kiss on thecross bank and stick the cue ball. Behind me,Ever Ready picked up the cup and saidinsincerely, “very sorry Senor.”I studied the shot. “Resist the temptation to makeslight adjustments,” the ghost of Charley Sturgiswhispered, “trust your stroke, stay with yourinstincts, and follow through.” I stayed with the stroke. When I followedthrough, the one popped cross rail to the oppositeside pocket just like the six. Only this time, thecue ball held and froze in place, and barelyavoided the double kiss. The crowd applauded. I sighed. The next shotwas basic. “Never let down after making a toughshot,” Charley’s voice echoed, “Real winnersdon’t miss shots they’re supposed to make.”The four ball stood on the side rail near the headstring. Low left English and a smooth easy strokeshould pull the cue ball down the table for positionon the two.Ever Ready jumped from his chair and eyed theshot. I turned my back to him, chalked my cueand thought about the shot. Two bad things couldhappen. One, I could scratch in the lower cornerpocket, or I could get straight in on the two andleave myself a difficult position shot on the eight.

Ever Ready went back to his chair. I turned andeyed the shot that I had already seen. I clearedmy throat and bore down on the shot.Ever Ready, in his chair, was almost directly infront of me. I rose up, eyed the shot carefully, then set myself. As expected, Ever Readymoved then slumped into his chair. ConfidentlyI eyed the four and followed through. The cueball plunked the four solidly into the corner thenloped backwards to the foot of the table.Catching the long rail, it killed softly at its touchand rested perfectly at an angle on the two.The crowd applauded. They sensed the victory.Ever Ready found it impossible to stay in his seat.He stood up, grabbed his cue cloth, and startedwiping down his cue.I had to make the two in the corner pocket, rollup on the eight and make it in the side pocket towin the match. Without hesitation, I eyed thetwo, stroked the cue ball and watched as it rolledslowly up on the eight. Ever Ready saw the shot.In one last attempt to shark me, he unscrewedhis cue.“Match!” The referee yelled, hopping off his seat.He ran to the center of the arena and raised hisarms like I’d just scored a touchdown. “Mr.Reyes!” he roared, “has fouled by breaking downhis cue prematurely!”Like a veteran ringmaster in a heavy weight fight,he grabbed my right hand and lifted it to the sky.The crowd cheered robustly. Ever Ready, shaking his head, pocketed his cue withoutsaying anything. Lauterette, steaming withemotion, froze in his chair just enough to registerthe significance of the win. Then he came overand picked me up like I was his long lost brotherand started shouting. “Zee Champeen, ZeeChampeen!”“Joe,” I gargled, “down boy.”He eyed me cross-eyed, then set me down and

celebrated with anyone who would listen.People rushed up to congratulate me.Instinctively, I glanced up into the balcony andlooked for Elizabeth. Miraculously, I saw her andLinda Jo leaning over the second floor balcony, smiling like they’d been stuffed with a carton oflight bulbs. All around me, people tugged andpulled at me, asking for autographs and pictures. As the cameras flashed, I glanced back towardElizabeth. In her hands was a large cardboardsign, and on it was scrawled a message, “THEANSWER’S YES.”At that moment, the rambunctious crowddisappeared around me. Like the shots I hadfaced minutes before, the focus was just asintense. Only the object of my affection wasmuch more human, and much prettier.I shook a few hands and signed some programs. Then, as soon as I saw Elizabeth coming towardme, I froze. “Congratulations, Mr. Keating,” shesaid.Nod.“You are the new Texas Eight Ball champion,”she said proudly. As I held her, I thought about what she had justsaid. My game had truly been resurrected, aswell as my life. Resurrection. That’s what it was.I had been reborn. And life for the moment wasreally good.
