Business Objectives:• Create a mechanical cell to automate the large tooling process for the Boeing 787-9
Dreamliner• Store up to 20 molds, each weighing 7,100 pounds and measuring 40-foot long, in a
vertical lift module upon completion of manufacturing process• Make the spar forming cell automation process ergonomic to worker height for
interaction during value added processes
• Large tooling vertical lift module (VLM): capable of holding 120,000 lbs., the lifting mo-tors and (3) pairs of Telescoping forks are electronically synchronized using SEW Eu-rodrive MoviDrive Package
• Tool preparation station: the lifting ball screw actuators and (3) pairs of Telescoping forks are electronically synchronized using SEW Eurodrive MoviDrive Package, convey-ance via Interroll drum motors

• Inspection station: the lifting ball screw actuators and (3) pairs of Telescoping forks are electronically synchronized using SEW Eurodrive MoviDrive Package, conveyance via Interroll drum motors
• Rotation Station (2): timing belt driven rotation and conveyance, non-marring wheels and rollers
• Assembly Design Station: High capacity polymer wheels, synchronized precision lifting arms to keep the molds level, synchronized conveyance wheels
• Transfer Car (2): Transfer cars integral to staging tables, telescopic conveyor zone driven by timing belt
• Staging Table (6 zones): 4 stationary accumulation zones, 2 mobiles zones
• Dis-assembly Station: High capacity polymer coated wheels, synchronized precision lifting arms to keep the molds level, synchronized conveyance wheels
• Spar forming cell fully operational with the ability to create 5-6 spars per week
• Improved worker safety by reducing the amount of manual crane use to transfer parts between stations
