Burns energizes triumphant B-Corsairs in returnby Ed OdevenStaff Writer: Japan TimesAll-Star guard Draelon Burns played a game for the first time in nearly a month, and made an impressive all-around impact.

Burns had 18 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, a season-high five steals and a blocked shot in the B-Corsairs’ 81-67 victory over the visiting Hamamatsu Higashimikawa Phoenix on Tuesday evening at Yokohama International Swimming Pool.

The DePaul University product had been sidelined since a Feb. 23 game against the Iwate Big Bulls due to a leg injury. The B-Corsairs went 2-3 in Burns’ absence over the past five games.

Burns came off the bench and saw 28 minutes of court time. He shot 5-for-21 from the floor, including 1-for-10 on 3-pointers, and 7-for-11 at the free-throw line. In essence, he dictated the tempo of the game.

Yokohama (27-12) led 46-43 at halftime.

“We worked hard for a really good quality team win tonight,” B-Corsairs coach Reggie Geary told The Japan Times after the game. “The guys played with good energy and spirit throughout the entire game, and looked like they enjoyed having Draelon back on the floor. Though Draelon didn’t shoot particularly well, his playmaking and pres-ence were huge.”

Geary noted that the Phoenix’s 24 second-half points was a key factor in the game.

“Defensively, we were very focused … which was the difference,” added Geary, who’s in his second year with Yokohama.

Thomas Kennedy scored a team-high 21 points for Yokohama, Pape Faye Mour added 15 points and 11 rebounds, Masayuki Kabaya pumped in 10 points and Shawn Malloy had six points and nine rebounds, while Seiji Kouno had five points.

The B-Corsairs out-rebounded the Phoenix 61-37, including 27-12 on the offensive glass.

Jeffrey Parmer was the high scorer for Hamamatsu (24-17) with 15 points, former Tokyo Apache forward Shoji Nakanishi sank three 3s in a 13-point effort, Elbert Fuqua had 11 points and Shinnosuke Oishi scored nine.

Yokohama held the Phoenix to 24-for-64 shooting from the field.

The new BIG EAST pressed forward into its future today, as Presi-dents of the member schools gathered in New York to announce a series of seminal developments that will help shape the basketball-focused conference, including an unprecedented partnership with FOX Sports that will grant the network exclusive media rights.

FOX Sports and its new national cable network, FOX Sports 1, will acquire television rights to all BIG EAST game action, as part of a 12-year contract that was detailed during a press conference at the midtown Manhattan studios of FOX News, attended by FOX Sports President and COO Randy Freer, FOX Sports Executive Vice President Larry Jones, and Presidents of the new BIG EAST schools, James M. Danko of Butler University; John J. DeGioia, Ph.D. of Georgetown University; Peter M. Donohue, O.S.A., Ph.D. of Villanova University; A. Gabriel Esteban, Ph.D. of Seton Hall University; Michael J. Graham, S.J. of Xavier University; Donald J. Harrington, C.M. of St. John’s University; Dennis Holtschneider, C.M. of DePaul University; Timothy R. Lannon, S.J. of Creighton University; Scott Pilarz, S.J. of Marquette University; and Brian J. Shanley, O.P. of Providence College.

Under the broadcast partnership, FOX Sports will have television rights to a wide range of marquee BIG EAST basketball games, including the annual BIG EAST Conference tournament.

“The new BIG EAST is fortunate to have found a partner such as FOX Sports, which shares our intense passion for college basketball, and is committed to celebrating the student-athletes and the natural rivalries that make college athletics so unique and appealing for fans across the nation,” said Father Holtschneider of DePaul University.

“We applaud all the BIG EAST schools for taking responsibility for their own destiny and forming what is clearly one of the top college basketball leagues in the country,” said Mr. Freer. “The quality of

the competition is obvious. Five teams who will play in the renewed BIG EAST next season are playing in this year’s NCAA tournament, and seven qualified for postseason play overall. We’re extremely proud and fortunate to offer college basketball of this caliber on FS1 next season and for many seasons to come.”

To coincide with the broadcast announcement, the conference formally welcomed three new members – Butler, Creighton and Xavier. The three schools now officially join DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Provi-dence, Seton Hall, St. John’s and Villanova as members of the new BIG EAST Conference, set to commence play in a wide range of sports starting with the 2013-2014 academic year.

“This is a great day for college sports – a day that marks an inspiring return to the BIG EAST’s roots as a showcase for the nation’s greatest collegiate basketball programs and the extraordinary achievements of the student-athlete,” said Dr. Esteban of Seton Hall University.

Added Father Donohue of Villanova University, “With the addition of Butler, Creighton and Xavier to the group of previously committed seven schools, the BIG EAST will once again revolve around, and gain its strength from, a firm foundation of historic basketball powerhouses located in the nation’s most vibrant metropolitan regions.”

The BIG EAST Conference will officially commence operations on July 1, 2013. Each of the inaugural members will be full conference participants starting in the 2013-2014 academic year. Each school will compete in all of the sports it offers today. The new BIG EAST will continue to invite and designate associate members, especially those from the current BIG EAST schools, in a select group of sports, includ-ing lacrosse and field hockey.

MANY DREAMS. ONE MISSION. - THE CAMPAIGN FOR DEPAUL UNIVERSITYThe Many Dreams, One Mission Campaign for DePaul University is an historic initiative undertaken in support of one of America’s great universities. It will ensure that DePaul continues to deliver on our founding promise: an excellent education for any talented student who seeks it.

The Campaign supports dreams. Students come to DePaul from across the country and around the world. Their dreams are many and varied, individual to each, as our students come from all stations in life. Many are the first in their family to attend college.

The realization of their dreams gives rise to new dreams and strong communities. The Campaign sup-ports DePaul’s mission, a mission which blends opportunity and excellence, inquiry and discovery, ser-vice to the individual and benefit to the larger community. It is manifested in the work that goes on here every day, in libraries, classrooms, laboratories, practice rooms and on the stage in hours of solitude and moments of connection

ATHLETICS CAPITAL CAMPAIGN SURPASSES $10 MILLION MARKAthletics provides an avenue of opportunity for students at DePaul. Athletics also helps build community and enhance DePaul’s reputation locally and nationally. As part of DePaul’s Many Dreams. One Mission. Campaign, Athletics is charged with raising $14 million. As of March 15, DePaul Athletics had raised nearly 10.2 million dollarsINSURE OPPORTUNITY FOR TOMORROW, TODAY THROUGH SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENTSDePaul Athletics fundraising efforts have focused on endowing scholarship and programming needs.
