The “Shootout” Brings Out All the AVCC Gunslingers
2014 Two Man “Shootout” Tournament Results
There are some new Wild and Wooly AVCC Men’s Club players as a new mixed format two man “Shootout” was played April 12th.The Tournament combined three different two man formats to create a uniquely interesting combination. The first six holes were played as best ball of partners. Holes 7-12 were played as alternate shot or Scotch ball. It’s called Scotch ball because if one partner hits a bad shot the other partner will probably reach for the Scotch. The last six holes were played a s a two man scramble format. From the feedback this reporter has been getting, the tournament format was well received among the 86 participants. So it appears that playing a tournament which did not involve always playing your own ball and having an individual postable score was interesting, enjoyable and competitive.

Our Own Kenny Cruz Finishes Top Ten in SCGA Mid-Am
Alta Vista member Kenny Cruz competed in the SCGA Mid-Amateur Championship held April 14-15, 2014
at Valencia Country Club. This two day 54 hole event was contested over the 6991 yard par 72 course.
The Valencia Country Club course has previously hosted both regular PGA and Senior PGA events. This
included a short stint as a replacement course for the Los Angeles Open.
Kenny competed very well. He made the 36 hole cut and was, at one time, in a tie for third. But his go for
broke style cost him several bogies at the end of the final round and left him in a tie for ninth place. His 7
over par 223 was eight shots off the winning score of one under par 215. But, the 223 was ten shots
lower than the field average score of 233. Our heartiest congratulations to Kenny!!!!
Congratulations Monthly Holes-in-One
After a short drought, we had another hole-in-one. Kudos to
Ron Lopez who aced Hole # 14 on April 28th. Ron hit 6 iron to
a 164 yard pin pacement.
April Meeting Day Tournament
Under blue skies, gusty Santa Ana winds and record temperatures, the monthly Men’s
Club meeting day tournament was held on Wednesday April 30th. The wind, gusting to 40
MPH at times, made club selection difficult and the course challenging. The players also
had to contend with a lot of debris strewn about the course as a result of the high winds.
Many thanks to those who braved very trying conditions to play this month’s Men’s Day
tournament. Also, many thanks to the Maintenance staff who worked extra hard to get
much of the debris off the course.
The format this month was two better balls of the foursome on the par threes and par
fives with three better balls needed on the par fours. After much calculation, it figures out
to a par score of 176. There were three flights. And several teams benefitted from a lucky
blind draw. Results below:
Flight one
1st place: Dan Ashcraft, Roger Watson, Terry Pedicone (155)
2nd place: Jeff Stoll, Jerry Dieball, Jim Vallone, John Murphy (159)
3rd place: Bill Tabb, Brian Ignatowski, Mark Reed, Tom White (161)
Flight two:

Let’s Be Heat Smart As we saw at Men’s Day, the heat is upon us. This brief heat wave is just the first of many
very hot days. Our thanks to Bob Sato for the helpful hints on coping with the heat that
appear on the card below.
Maintenance Pays Off Jorge Morales our Superintendent and our maintenance staff performed the semi-annual
green aerification and sanding process the last week in March. As you will recall, the
staff was not able to do this necessary task last fall because Jorge , along with our
consulting agronomist, deemed the greens’ root structure too fragile to withstand the
process. This put our greens at great risk. The ability to perform this maintenance
greatly improves the viability of the greens. The greens are nearly fully recovered as of
this writing and playing conditions are vastly improved. The expectation is for faster
healthier greens this season. Many thanks to Jorge and staff.

Sunday Social Group Results
April 6th The weather was perfect and we had 26 players, yesterday. Two of our players
decided to forget about the weather and their golf game. I guess spending the morning
having breakfast in bed was more appealing. Yves & Barb Pinkowitz, the O'Buchs did
just fine without you.
First place went to Warren and Leslie O'Buch with a draw. With all of Leslie's injuries,
she slowed her swing down and played outstanding. I understand though that the script
you win here doesn't cover the emergency room co-pays and medical costs. Be careful
Leslie! Second place was the team of Larry & Lilah Burnette, playing with Gail Grundy
and Frank Giambalvo. DFL players, Bob & Paula Sato with Bill and Patty Freck received
golf balls and a bracelet from the Testicular Cancer Awareness Group that said "FEEL
MY BALLS" We have a very fun time on Sunday's, but this is a serious cancer and I
wanted to bring awareness to this disease.
Closest to the pin was on hole #2. Ron Chester and Gail Grundy were the precise hitters
yesterday. Long drive went to Don McCay. Keeping the Big Dog and the crown in the
family... Donna McCay also won from the red tees. Paula Sato was crowned from the
gold tees. Congratulations to Dennis Jaeger for his EAGLE on hole #7.
April 12 We had 27 players and 1 patron join us to celebrate Master's Sunday. Thanks
to Teresa Wyles for being our patron. I also want to welcome Trish McBride back to Alta
Vista. The game was 1BB Net and 1BB Gross. First place went to Mark & Mary
Peterson playing with Paul Wyles, and Chuck Tuggle. One stroke behind, in second
place, were Ron & Kathy Chester, playing with Mark & Susan Alderson.
DFL went to the team of Don & Donna McCay, playing with Bill Freck. For their hard
work, they received "Master" golf coasters.
Closest to the pin winners were Dave Banig with a shot of 9'2" and Trish McBride at
38'2". Long drive winners were Paul Wyles, Mary Peterson, and Paula Sato.
April 20 I hope everyone had a great time golfing or with their family on Easter. I want
to thank Dennis Jaeger for doing the game and results for Mark and I.
The players were few, but the competition was fierce. I understand Larry had a great
game. He had 4 birdies, gross score of 79 and a net score of 65. Larry, you are a true
sandbagger!
The team of Don and Donna McCay, playing with Yves and Barb Pinkowitz with a special
guest star of Matt Manaserro took first place. Yes, it took all 5 of them, so they had an
advantage. Charity.
Dennis Jaeger and Donna McCay won closest to the pin. Paul Wyles and Lilah Burnette
were the long drive champions.
All winnings went to H.I.S. Charity. Next week the game fees will also go this
charity. Thank you all for your generosity.
April 27 We had 32 players come out and
celebrate National Pie championship Week. It
was also our second week where we collected
donations for H.I.S. House Charity. As of
yesterday, we had collected $1720.00 Lilah will
wait a few more days, as some people are still
sending her checks. Thank you to everyone who
donated and help make life a little easier for those
in need. If you would still like to donate, contact
Lilah Burnette.
First place, went to the team of Don and Donna
McCay playing with Rick and Linda
Saunders. The McCay's have taken first two
weeks in a row. Second place was won by Chuck
and the ladies. Also known as Chuck Smude,
Laury Smude, Lisa Sanders and Alex Oh.
Long drive was on hole #3 and Bob Sato smoked
one past Chuck Smude's drive. Alex Oh won
from the red (Lisa Sanders was very close) and
Linda Saunders won from the Gold tees.
Closest to the pin went to Mark Alderson at 9'5"
and Laury Smude at 2'3". Yes, Laury made the
putt for a birdie.
DFL winners did not receive PIE in the
face. They received a whole pie from Marie
Calendars. Sometimes, it is good to be
DFL. Congratulations to Larry and Lilah Burnette
playing with Bill and Pat Freck. We also had
delicious cookies for our April birthdays.
