    The Safe Explosion

  • Don’t be put off by thetitle! This is very safeand will get a round ofapplause…….

You will blow the redplug out of the icescoop. The red cap willfly up a metre or so inthe air with a nicepopping sound.

The warm air in theroom is causing thedry ice to turn to agas. Gases needmore room thansolids and liquids sothe pressure growsin the Scoop. Thiswill eventually pushthe cap off.

    What’sHappening?

    ActivityPlace the icescoop on atable/worksurface.

Ensure everyone issitting back from theexperiment so that thelid is away from yourface.

Place 3-4 pellets of dryice into the ice scoop. The easiest way to dothis is to scoop the icedirectly from the ice box.If you want to place thepieces in by hand pleasewear lightweight gloves.

Push the red plug firmlyon the scoop and wait.

After about 20 secondsthe red cap will pop off.

Do you want more?Place 2-3 pellets of dryice in a plastic zip logfreezer bag. Seal thebag and place it in thesink and wait. This willmake quite a loud bangbut is great fun!

  • Simple and funexperiment thatshows you just howmagical things can be..... Well almost!

If the bubbles don’tfloat try using a cup ofhot water to make fogwhich will encouragethe carbon dioxide inthe sink.

The dry ice is solidcarbon dioxide.(The stuff thatmakes drinksfizzy). At roomtemperature itwants to turn intoa gas. This gasslowly fills thebucket pushingout air.

Carbon dioxide isheavier than airso it tends to stayin the sink. Unlessit is pushed out byan open window. This is why wesuggest using atea towel to keepthe gas in thebucket.

    What’sHappening?

    ActivityPlace thebucket in thesink.

Fill the icescoop to around aquarter full.

Cover the bucket witha tea towel and wait 5minutes.

Tell the children to bevery quiet and still -this is a magic bucket.

Gently remove thetowel from the bucket.

Invite the children toblow bubbles into thebucket - watch as thebubbles bob and floatin the bucket.

  • The dry icecontained in theice cage and drinkmixture create afog of tinydroplets of thedrink. This is whythe aroma of thedrink is easy todetect - you havecreated a fruitflavoured cloud! The dry iceconverts from asolid directly to agas and this is theonly way it canleave the ice cage.

    What’sHappening?

Place the funnelinto the safety valve ofthe ice cage and scoopdry ice into the cageusing the funnel untilhalf full. (Pic 1).
