November 2011
Message from LHMS Principal,Message from LHMS Principal,
Susan PatinSusan Patin
November and December will be very busy months for us at Lake Harbor. Interims
for the second grading period are due to go home on November 10th. These re-
ports are meant for you to check your child’s progress. As you sign this report, take
some time to speak to your child about his/her progress in academics and behav-
ior. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call your child’s teacher.
Please help us by making sure your child attends school daily and arrives at school
on time. With the changes to the state attendance policy, some students have
already reached the 10 day absence limit. EVERY instructional minute is important
to us and daily attendance is very important to your child’s academic success in
school. Tardies and absences affect our overall school performance as well. Stu-
dents have begun receiving consequences for their excessive tardies.
Thanks to all of our PTA board members and LHMS parents and students who
came out to make our second annual PTA Fitness Fun Run a huge success! The
weather was beautiful and everyone who came out had a great time playing
games and socializing. PTA did a great job of organizing and setting this up for us.
Our Family Learning Night and Book Fair were well attended and exciting for all
involved. Thanks to all families who came out to support the library at the fair and
to have some educational fun with your children. Showing interest in your child's
education means a lot to them and their teachers!
5th and 6th grade Grandparent lunch days were lots of fun and very success-
ful! We hope to meet many of the 4th grade students’ grandparents this week too.
I know they are all very proud of their grandchildren!
Our magazine sale and United Way coin drive were VERY successful. Thanks to
everyone who supported both of these efforts at school. The "Biggest Loser" con-
test motivated all grade levels to bring in donations and to be the winner! Our
school collected over $4,000 to be donated to the United Way this year. Fantastic
job!!
With the holidays quickly approaching, we hope that everyone enjoys time with
their family and friends. The Thanksgiving holidays are November 21st through No-
vember 25th and the Christmas/ New Year holidays are December 19th – January
3rd. December 16th is the last day of the second grading period and a ½ day for
students.
Thanks for all of your support of Lake Harbor and especially for taking an interest in
your child’s education. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to
call the office at 674-4440.
Sincerely,
Susan Patin

We hope everyone is enjoying the cooler weather. October at LHMS was marked by several fun events. First,
thank you to all the shoppers and volunteers who helped make Book Fair the best one ever. The Fun Run also
was a fantastic way to encourage healthy lifestyles and fitness for everyone. Thank you to Carla Long and
Melissa Falcone for chairing the event and to all of our volunteers and sponsors. Finally, the staff was also
treated to Spooky Treat Day by the Hospitality Committee.
November will bring even more opportunities for learning and fun at LHMS. Students always look forward to
fundraiser day, which will be on Thursday, November 17th. Instead of smoothies as we’ve had for our last two
fundraiser days, this month students will be able to order TCBY yogurt. Please note that the fundraiser day will
not always be on a Friday as it has been in the past.
This month we are also participating in a new and yummy fundraiser with CNOs Meal Solutions
(www.cnosmealsolutions.com). If you shop at CNO’s this month, they will give 15% back to LHMS. The holi-
days are approaching so if you need a delicious and quick meal or side dish, visit CNO’s and help LHMS in the
process.
The PTA Reflections Program theme this year is “Diversity means…” Visit www.ptareflections.org for information
about the Program. The deadline for entries is November 30. There are six categories students can submit an
entry into: Visual Arts, Photography, Literature, Music Composition, Dance, and Film Production. Please follow
the guidelines and rules. A copy of rules for each category can be obtained from the office.
We are still short of our PTA Membership goal but if you haven’t already done so, you can join PTA anytime
throughout the year. Forms can be obtained on the PTA website or from the office.
Our General PTA meeting is December 14th so please mark your calendars. Chorus and band will perform too
so you do not want to miss it. Hope to see you there! If you need to contact us, email lakehar-
Happy Thanksgiving to all. Enjoy the holiday with family and friends!

Alicia, mom of Abigail (6th), and Debra, mom of Sarah (5th), are the co-chairs of Membership and spent count-
less hours recording this year’s PTA membership drive information. Alicia, who is also technology chair and Ms.
Melan’s room mom, entered all of the data for us. Debra, who is also Mrs. Fisher’s room mom, put all the infor-
mation onto the festive light house charts outside of every teacher’s door.
Melissa, mom of Christian and Kyle (4th) and Carla, mom of Jack (4th), co-chaired this year’s FUN RUN. They or-
ganized and planned the run, collected all of the raffle items, planned the games and food. This PTA fundraiser
was a huge success thanks to their enthusiasm and hard work. In addition, they are both room moms to Mrs.
Mallory and Mrs. Peterson, respectively.
All four of these moms can be seen doing various volunteer jobs around school and are part of the reason Lake
Harbor is such a great place to work and learn!

LHMS Book Fair Success Volunteers Went Above & Beyond
Thank you to all of the volunteers and shop-
pers who made Book Fair a great success! The
time given by volunteers to help students
shop, restock shelves, and check students
out was greatly appreciated. Students en-
joyed looking at and purchasing new
books, bookmarks, and other items.
Congratulations to Jonathan Lagarrigue
who was the winner of the Guess How Many Moon
Rocks? contest. His guess was 337 and there were 341

Fifth Grade Adaptations
Recently Ms. Bynum’s 5th grade class had a presenta-
tion from Mandeville Public Works on adaptations.
They had a visit from their new class pets “Tia Beaver”
and “Albert Alligator.” Pictured left, Tia and Brian dem-
onstrate the adaptations beavers and alligators have
in order to survive in their habitats.
Helping Hands
LHMS PTA held a Food Drive for the Samaritan Center
during the last two weeks in October. Most food banks
in the area are empty. An overwhelming number of
food items were sent in. Thank you for your generosity!

Dear Parents,
As mandated by the St. Tammany Parish School Board, trained personnel will be
presenting a classroom lesson on Child Sexual Abuse Prevention, Education and
Reporting. Although the children will have a chance to talk about the topic with a
guidance counselor during the class lesson, we would like to encourage you to
talk with your child about this important issue. This might also be a good time to
talk to your child about other general safety issues.
Materials to be used in the lesson are available at the school for preview. If you
wish to preview the material, or if you have any questions, please call the school.
Thank you for your concern and interest in the safety of your child.
Sincerely,
Lesa Kabrich
