Dear Beacon Tree Families,

May is here, and hopefully that means that the good weather is here to stay too! There

are a lot of activities that go on during the month, so please make sure that you check

out the classroom calendars and the school calendar on the Beacon Tree website for all

of the activities that are planned!

M-Step has been moving forward very smoothly. Our 5th grade students have complet-

ed their assessments and the 3rd, 4th, and 6th graders are getting underway with theirs.

Please make sure that you check with your classroom teachers on when your child will

be testing. Each teacher has the schedule, and we want to make sure that all of our All

Stars are ready to put forth their best efforts on test dates. We are very proud of the

determination and resilience that your children show during the testing window. This

is just one of the many reasons that our students stand above the others, they are truly

“All Stars”.

May also will bring the final assessment window for NWEA. Students have already

been assessed twice this year to monitor growth, and later this month they will be as-

sessed one final time. We are looking to see some wonderful growth from all of our

students when the assessment window closes in early June.

Please know that classroom placements for the 2017 – 2018 school year begin to take

place during the later portion of the month. The teachers take into consideration a mul-

titude of different information when it comes to placing students. Like last year, please

refrain from letters of request. Our highly qualified staff takes pride in the placing of

students, and do their best to select the appropriate learning environment. The staff

and I appreciate your cooperation with this endeavor.

Finally… Thank you to everyone who participated in our Science and Art Fair! We had

a great showing of children and their families during our evening extravaganza! I

would like to say thank you to Mrs. Dobis, Mrs. Henion, and Mrs. Cusumano for their

efforts in organizing the evening, and guiding your children to great things in the Arts

and Sciences! Thank you also to Mrs. Tobey, Mrs. Warren, Mrs. Uitos, Mrs. Sapienza

and Mrs. Spasenovski for their help with all of the art work.

I hope that all of you have a fun and relaxing month of May!

School Hours Grades K-6 9:00-3:50 p.m. Children will not be allowed to enter the building until 8:50 a.m. each morning. Please help your children time their arrival accordingly. Children who must arrive earlier need to be enrolled in our Child Care program. Please contact the office for more information.

Absences To report your child’s absence, please call our

answering machine at 586-797-7399. When

you place your call please clearly state your

child’s name, teacher, reason for, and length of

absence. The answering machine will take at-

tendance calls 24 hours a day.

Career Focus Luncheon The 24

th Career Focus Luncheon for all district sixth

graders will be held on Wednesday and Thursday,

May 3 and May 4, 2017 at the Palazzo Grande in

Shelby Township. The annual event is sponsored

by the Utica Community Schools Foundation.

Parents are invited to sponsor a table and share

their career and college experience. For more in-

formation, please visit the Foundation’s website at

www.ucsfoundation.org or call 586.797.6953. The

UCS Foundation for Educational Excellent is an in-

dependent 501(c)(3) organization comprised of

community volunteers.

Lunch (11:30-1:25) Students may either bring their own lunch to

school or purchase a hot lunch.

Lunch w/ milk is $2.75. Stu-

dents may purchase just milk for

45 cents. Please review the

monthly hot lunch menu on Beacon

Tree’s new web page under Parents—

Food Service Menu with your child. It is

very important that students who wish to pur-

chase hot lunch order the day before. New

lunch schedule: Grades K-11:30-12:10, 2nd-

11:40-12:20, 5th-12:00-12:40, 1st-12:05-

12:45, 6th-12:25-1:05, 4th-12:30-1:10, 3rd-

12:50-1:30. All students will eat lunch for 20

minutes before going out to lunch recess for

20 minutes.

Nut Safe Rooms

Should your child be placed in a nut safe room,

there are a few simple things you

can do to help us to ensure a safe

environment for the student(s) with a

nut allergy. A letter will be sent

home the first day of school to outline those

items. Most importantly we must require no

homemade bake or commercially prepared

bakery treats to be brought to school.

Background Check

To protect students’ health, safety and welfare,

every volunteer must have a Criminal Back-

ground form on file well in advance of volun-

teering their assistance at school or school-

related events. UCS conducts criminal back-

ground checks on volunteers through the Mich-

igan State Police. The form, which asks for

basic information such as driver’s license num-

ber, is available through the office.

Parking Lot Safety The area along the curb in front of the school is

a bus drop-off area and is also a fire route. For

the safety of our children and all our community,

do not park or leave your car standing in this no

parking area, even during after-school and

evening activities.

When picking up your child at the end of the day,

please arrange a meeting place by

the school entrance, then provide a

safe escort to your car. With heavy

pedestrian, bus, and car traffic, it is

crucial that children remain next to

adults while in the parking lot, and

that cars and vans always look twice, then a third

time before backing out of a space.

Automated Telephone

Alert System in Place for UCS Parents The Utica Community Schools is taking ad-

vantage of technology innovations by using an

automated telephone notification system for

staff and parents. The system is used to an-

nounce emergency school closings such as

those related to weather. Individual buildings

also use it for periodic school-specific updates

and reminders.

Please make sure that your child’s emergency

contact information is up-to-date to assure you

receive these important updates. The district will continue to utilize local media,

UCS-TV cable stations 15/22 and the district

website, www.uticak12.org to keep parents ap-prised of closings.

In addition, Mr. Ellis will use the automated sys-

tem to inform the community of Beacon Tree

events.

Administration of Medication

Students sometimes need to take medication.

Parents should administer medica-

tion to their children at home. In

the event that is not possible, the

school may administer either pre-

scription or non-prescription medi-

cine – but only when authorized by

the students parent/guardian and the child’s phy-

sician. Requests must be made by completing

an Authorization for Medication form, available

from the school office. The form must be signed

by the child’s physician.
