Contests

Every team will be offered a space every edition of the Newsletter to submit something funny... write about their game... whatever...and since we’re doing a newsletter every Tuesday of every week, you have plenty of time to come up with something! If your team doesn’t submit anything, and isn’t in the newsletter, talk to your captain!

Ideas for Team Submissions When I say, submit something for your team, here are some ideas: • Play by plays of the game • Document the debauchery at the bar - i.e. describing someone’s amazing acting skills hobbling across the bar with a “sprained ankle” just to Ice a teammate. ] • Draw pictures!!!!! • Favorite quotes, poems, song lyrics, movie scripts, YouTube video, or motivational speeches! • Email chains from the morning after . • Funny pictures of you, your team, or something random on the internet • Give your team member awards - drunkest, loudest, person with the least shame, best off the face catch, etc.! • Anything. Really. Someone on your team is creative.

Submissions are due EVERY Tuesday by 7 p.m.

Backyard Sports Club’s email is

[email protected]. I look forward to working with all of you!

** If you need extra time, email me and just let me know.

DISCLAIMER: if you have problems with keeping your language in check, not bashing refs, being overly nasty to other teams, and other no-no’s, the Editor does have the right to not include your write up in the newsletter if the content is deemed inappropriate or out of line. We will try to screen write ups as they are received, will try to let teams know so that they have time to resubmit, but there is no guarantee. The easiest thing to do is to keep it clean, be nice, and remember this is all in good fun.

Team write-ups

This week we had a few people missing. We actually only had 7 people total. We were glad the other team allowed us to play instead of forfeiting. We all really like to play and are not concerned as much about winning. I guess that’s a good thing because we haven’t won a game yet…YET. Since we were shorthanded we played deep to prevent extra base hits. The other team wisely took advantage of this and hit a lot of infield hits. Well, we played the odds and the odds beat us. Some great defensive plays were made, but that is not our weakness. We need help at the dish. We struggled a bit getting on base, but we are relatively new to the game, so I believe it will come in time. We may have lost the wiffleball game, but Tim, Shaun, and myself made up for it at Uno’s playing flip cup!

-Glenn Krinsky

We had a 7:30pm game, which was pretty sweet, because some of our team met up for beers at Uno’s beforehand. We ran into some of our opponents from Wifflin Dixie on the way to the field, and they had been pre-gaming as well. Given the circumstances, I expected a lot of runs and some sloppy defense. Didn’t work out that way. The score was, I think, 10-0 and the game was over in what felt like maybe 25 minutes. We should have played a double heder. Joe’s team is fairly new but they have some potential as a spoiler down the line.

Promoting Ball Awareness...Since 2008

As is our trend, we played without a full team. With only 9 players, we did the best we could to play solid defense and string together big innings. we were able to ride the hot bats of Brian Wurst and Liz Germanos to the tune of 15 runs but without enough defense on the field, we couldn't stop them from scoring effectively. James Salgado was completely neutralized by the impressive pitching of his teammate Jason Barba. I think Barba must've been mad at him or something because he was throwing curveballs, high cheese, any junk he could find to James. Sadly, he threw meat to the rest of the team and they were able to put 17 runs on the board and hold on to thwart our late inning charge and win the game 17-15.

- Will Buker

This was a pretty tough game versus the champs. They jumped on us pretty early and never looked back. Good job by Da Bombers also for playing hard even with the 100 degree heat. Much love to Buck and the entire Militia. Whenever we play those guys, it's always a good time.

Team write-ups

Down Wiff It showed up dazed and confused without their fearless leader, but we pulled together. We are really starting to gel as a team, everyone was hitting well and contributing. I was really impressed with the heads up defense and lots of opportunities to get the extra outs. Wifflin’ Dixie gave a great effort and was a lot of fun to play. Oh and who were all those tree huggers holding a practice on game night???

- Doug Werner

Why must every game come down to a point or 2? Why must there be some sort of an attempt for a rally? Why must Sons of Pitchers pick the Kelly Green every season?!?! I felt a bit nervous coming into the game because the winds were favoring the homerun hitters. Holey Balls has a couple(Caleb and Ken) but Sons of Pitchers have a few more than that. Fortunately for us, Son of Pitchers came in a bit light-handed with 9 players. It definitely helped us with the open spots in the outfield. Andrew made a great double play at 3rd which saved us a run from scoring. Holey Balls was up 5-6 runs at the bottom of the 6th but you know its wiffle ball, anything could happen and will happen. We could have ended the game at 17-12 but Duane knocked the ball out of Kim's hands when she had caught it which resulted in 2 runs scoring. Another game worthy play was when someone from SOP batted the ball towards Will Buker as he was running from 1st to 2nd. Yes, we won at the end but why must the bottom 6 be so dramatic. Great game by both teams.

Team write-ups

-After the first two weeks of close potential upsets, we came into our doubleheader optimistic. But I had a better idea. I told my team I wanted to play opposite night. So we did, and lost 11-4 to team tie-dye and 11-0 to team Charm. Yea we lost but who cares? We had fun playing opposite night. Such a blast! Although one of my guys, Shawn, decided he did not want to play and actually hit a homerun. He will be benched this coming Thursday. All kidding aside, we played to great teams. Kudos to them. What we lacked in performance on the field, we sure as heck made up for it @ the bar. Had fun as usual. We def ruled flip cup. Looking forward to the next one.

- Joe Equitan

What little defense we played in the first game must've been saved for the second because outside of one inning where they scored 5 runs, we were able to shut their offense down before they got on a roll. We even blanked them for 3 innings which is rare in wiffleball. Pitches and Hoes plays solid outfield defense and were able to neutralize our running game but home runs by Brian Wurst and Will Buker helped break open the game. We were up 10-7 going into the last inning and we let them get 3 runs to tie it. The bottom of the last inning saw Liz and Brian get on base and Chris Pauley with a clutch hit down the right field line to score the winning run from third base. Walk off wins are fun, especially when they come against a solid team. Looking forward to playing the 'Hoes again in the playoffs.

Team write-ups

I don't know if my team needs a wake up call or a cold shower to wake up because they were looking kinda insipid last night. It's like we came, we played, and we hit the bar. The innings seemed long and tiresome. I don't know if it's because of the heat wave that came through Azalea. Even though Ball Busters had a few people missing they came out playing hard. They didn't give up and had fun the whole night. In the end Make It Rain prevailed, but we all shared jello-shots provided by Ball Busters, so thank you for the shots and the good game. No MVP tonight our team played an all-around good game.

- Jon Reyes

Well Wiffskey Militia earns another Star…Kudos! I unfortunately was unable to attend the game, but heard they pulled it off. I was really looking forward to playing against Da Bombers too. No homers for the Militia this round, but we had an awesome double play and a triple play. Wow…a play only found in Wiffle Ball! We need to put that one in the books. I am really proud of the Militia, they always seem to pull through when they need to. Well it looks like we will face our Nemesis coming up this Thursday, Rec ‘N Ballz. That should be quite a game, but you can believe the Militia will Bring It…Game On!!!

Wiffle Ball

Well, since no one wants to read the official Backyard Sports Club Wiffle Ball rules, here is a simple Wiffle Ball for Dummies to help you out as the season starts out!

When running to first base, remember to run across the outside base. The reason for this is so the first baseman doesn’t crush you trying to tag you out. However, if you’re running to 2nd, you can touch 1st base and book it to 2nd.

Wiffle Ball

Well, since no one wants to read the official Backyard Sports Club Wiffle Ball rules, here is a simple Wiffle Ball for Dummies to help you out as the season starts out!

NO SLIDING! NO CLEATS! Unless the ground is wet!

NO GLASS BOTTLES! NO SMOKING!

Page 13: "The Batter's Box" 3rd Ed

Wiffle Ball

MOST IMPORTANTLY….DO NOT, DO NOT THROW YOUR TRASH

BAGS WITH EMPTY CANS OR BOXES OF “ADULT BEVERAGES” INTO THE TRASH RECEPTICALS THEY HAVE AT THE FIELDS.

These DO NOT Go Into the Trash Cans at the Fields:

The Field Manager has already warned us about this, and if he has to tell us one more time, he

will take away our drinking privileges at the fields…or worse, he can end up kicking us off these fields all together! So PLEASE take your trash bag full of cans, cups,

and boxes with you!!!

Page 14: "The Batter's Box" 3rd Ed

The Dos and DONTs • DO NOT bring alcoholic beverages to the field….or at least be discreet about it! • DO clean up after yourselves! Unfortunately, maid service was cut out of Backyard

Sports Club’s budget due to the economy. • DO be friendly to the Refs: Please do not yell at them…just remember, you’re the one

that will look like a jerk if you yell at them. • DO NOT be “that guy.” We do not own Uno Chicago Grill or the premises around it; so

when you do something stupid, you’re not excluded from any laws just because you are wearing a Backyard Sports Club t-shirt.

• DO NOT leave a fellow wiffleballer behind; we take care of our own. Don’t let your

teammate drink like a champ and drive home. Find the closest decent looking guy/gal, introduce them, and have them go home together.

• DO NOT be bitter. It’s super important that if you end up having a “sleep over” with a

fellow wiffleballer, be cool with them for weeks to follow. We’re a small community, you’re gonna end up seeing them all season! When they drop you off at your car, hug it out, smile…and say “hi” the following week.

• DO NOT try to guess that persons name! • DO go to our sponsor Bar, Uno Chicago Grill. It’s what the cool kids are doing. • DO NOT fight! This is a fun league, HAVE FUN! If you fight, fun’s over for you, you’ll be

kicked out. • DO always wear your Backyard Sports Club shirt. I know laundry once a week may be

too much, so it’s cool if you go a couple weeks without washing….unless you’ve got bad B.O. like Robbie Wright!

• DO NOT smoke at the fields!

**DISCLAIMER** Nothing in the Backyard Sports Club Newsletter is to be taken seriously, except for the schedules and scores! Please send scores, recaps, pictures, questions, funny quotes, and/or any information that you would like to be added into the week’s newsletter to [email protected]

Girls (and maybe some guys), your search for Mr. Right is finally over. I introduce you to Mr. Seth Pai aka Buff Bagwell. He “works” at T-Mobile right now, but his real passion is mentoring under privileged kids during his spare time. He loves sports. He’s a very good softball player. Seth is a die hard Redskins fan but if the right Cowboys fan comes along, he’s open minded. He went to school for massage therapy , but he also minored in Loooooove (Happy endings are negotiable.) The pictures speak for themselves. He rivals only Channing Tatum and Liam Hemsworth in goodlookingness. Little known trivia about Seth is he once turned down the movie role Thor, but is currently in negotiations with Universal Studios to play Christian Grey for the film adaptation of 50 Shades. Now ladies (and guys) use your imagination. So next time you’re at UNO’s, just look for the best looking guy in there cause it’s probably him, and start a conversation…or I can hook ya up!
