When you are ready, saunter (19) out on sewing machine day (13) and create a new flag (14) with red roses (12). Celebrate your new flag with doughnuts (5) and ice tea (10)! Check your insurance (28) before going out on Meteor Day (30)! On, finally, Summer Day, aka Father’s Day, (21) grab your sunglasses (27) and go fishing (18). Catch a catfish (25) and celebrate your success by tossing a Yo-Yo (6)!

JUNE PICNIC

The Bismarck Senior Center will be hosting a summer picnic on

June 16th from 11:00 am—1:00 pm at the Community Shelter at

Sertoma Park. Come for a fun-filled afternoon of food, games,

door prizes and great company with Marv Zander as our

entertainment! There will be NO congregate meal at the Senior

Center Building on the day of the picnic. We look forward to

seeing all of you at the picnic!

WASH CLOTH CROCHET CLASS

Melissa Gordon will be here on June 2nd from 9:30

am—11:30 am in the Art Room to teach a class on

crocheting wash cloths. The cost of the class is $15

plus $7.50 for yarn (cotton #4 peaches and cream). If

you are interested in this class, please register by

calling 255-4648 by June 1st.

MUSIC FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT Pius Koch and Gene Horner will be here on June 4th at 12:45 pm in the Dining Room to entertain us with accordion music.

PIE HAPPY HOUR

Pie Happy Hour will be held on June 29th from 2:00

pm—3:30 pm. Apple pie, ice cream and coffee will

be served for $2.00. You may purchase your pie

ticket at the Site Manager’s desk beginning at 1:30

pm. A line will be formed when the pie is ready to be

served. We thank you for your cooperation.

BUNCO

Bunco will be held on June 5th and June 19th in the

Dining Room at 1:15 pm. In May, there were six

tables playing Bunco! Please continue to call in to

register at 255-4648 before the dates of play.

LOVING HEARTS HOMECARE INFORMATIONAL PRESENTATION & DESSERT Loving Hearts is a local agency specializing in care for seniors and persons with physical or mental disabilities or limitations that wish to stay in their home and remain independent for as long as possible. Join us for an educational presentation on June 25th at 1:00 pm in the South Conference Room.

CREATE A MAGICAL MINIATURE GARDEN Miniature plantscapes, also known as fairy or fantasy gardens, enchant Midwestern gardeners. These gardens are tiny worlds complete with miniature furnishings, fairy-scale plants and plenty of mystique. Just a touch of inspiration, a cute container, some plants and a few accessories are all it takes to get the magic of a fairy garden!

Please join Renee and Colette for this mystical class on June 11th at 1:15 pm in the South Conference Room. The cost for the class is $12 and includes two plants, soil, moss, rocks and other decorative items. Supplies will be provided to you upon arrival. Please bring your own container. We recommend a shallow 6-8” round planter or square planter. You may also use a lined basket or other type of container. You may bring your own accessories or purchase them from the Senior Center during the class. Accessories from the Senior Center range from $1.25 to $8.75, and include garden frogs, mushrooms, turtles, snails, light-up houses, walkways, streams, bridges, flowers and more!

BOOK CLUB Book Club will meet on Monday, June 29th at 1:00 pm in the Library. The book for discussion is Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. (Please obtain your own copy of this book).

Wuthering Heights is widely regarded as a work of classic English literature. This novel was considered controversial in its day due to its depiction of mental and physical cruelty, which was unusually stark. It challenged the strict Victorian ideals including religious hypocrisy, morality, social classes and gender equality.

Book Club meets the last Monday of each month, except the months of July and December.

Book Club read for August: Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin (Please obtain your own book.)

4| Burleigh County Senior Adults Program

FALLS POLICY The staff and volunteers of the Burleigh County Senior Adults Program are not to lift anyone who has fallen. If the person cannot get up on their own, 911 will be called. The staff from the Center will stay with the person that has fallen and make them as comfortable as possible until emergency personnel arrive. This policy is in effect for the Bismarck and Wing Senior Centers.

LEGAL SERVICES OF ND

Legal Services of ND is a non-profit organization

providing legal help to disadvantaged elderly and

low-income North Dakotans. LSND typically

meets with individuals by appointment on the

second Wednesday of each month at the

Bismarck Senior Center. You must schedule an

appointment in advance to meet with them. To

schedule an appointment, please call 258-4270

or 877-258-5263.

PAPER CRAFTING

Jo-Ann Fabrics donated two papercrafting

machines: a Spellbinder and a Cuttlebug. Those

that took the papercrafting class from Donna Kuhn

may come in and use the machines at any time.

However, you MUST reserve the use of the

machine IN ADVANCE with Site Manager, Colette

Barth at 255-4648.

HEARING LOSS SUPPORT GROUP

The Hearing Loss Support Group will meet on

June 16th at 10:30 am in the Library. Dr. Brady

Ness will be hosting this month’s session. He will

present on audiology and hearing aids.

SENIOR MEDICARE PATROL

Eunice Meidinger from Senior Medicare Patrol will

be available on Wednesday, June 10th from 11:30

am to 1:00 pm in the Lobby to answer questions

regarding Medicare fraud and scams.

Health Maintenance

ASSISTIVE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT The Bismarck Senior Center has medical equipment available to you on a ‘loan’ basis. Equipment that can be loaned out for up to 90 days include transfer/shower benches, walkers, canes, commodes, toilet risers, and other smaller items.

Wheelchairs are available on a limited basis for seven days only.

We suggest a donation of $5.00 for each piece of equipment borrowed. A $100.00 deposit check is required for wheelchairs. The check is returned to you upon the timely return of the wheelchair.

RANDOM HEALTH FACTS Blondes have more hair. The average human head has 100,000 hair follicles, each of which is capable of producing 20 individual hairs during a person’s lifetime. Blondes average 146,000 follicles. People with black hair tend to have about 110,000 follicles, those with brown hair have 100,000 follicles. Redheads have the least dense hair, averaging about 86,000 follicles. An adult has fewer bones than a baby. We start off life with 350 bones, but because bones fuse together during growth, we end up with only 206 as adults. Your nose is not as sensitive as a dog's, but it can remember 50,000 different scents.

Kitchen / Sunroom Flooring Update Plans are well underway for our Kitchen and Sunroom flooring replacement in July. Following is a timeline of the project. Please note that this timeline is still being developed and is SUBJECT TO CHANGE. June 29 – July 1: Begin moving kitchen equipment and set up temporary kitchen in Rec Room. July 1: Last congregate meal served in Dining Room until project is complete. July 2: Last of equipment is removed from kitchen. July 3, 4, 5: Center Closed for 4

th of July Holiday.

Week of July 6: Asbestos tile is removed from Kitchen and Sun Room. Week of July 13: Install new flooring in Kitchen and Sun Room. July 17, 20, 21: Re-install all Kitchen equipment. July 22: Kitchen and Sun Room complete. Congregate meal in Dining Room. Please note the following while we go through this process:

All congregate meals will be served in the Rec Room. We will not have Caramel Roll Wednesdays. If possible, we will have caramel rolls on July 29

th.

Activities will be limited, especially the week of July 13th. We will have home-delivered meals, although they will be frozen meals for three weeks, with each

client receiving a weekly delivery. More information will be sent to home delivered meal clients in the immediate future.

There will be no change in how meals are delivered to Crescent Manor. We do have need for special volunteer assistance while we go through this process. If you would

like to lend your assistance, please let Colette know as soon as possible. We appreciate your patience and flexibility as we go through this project. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to stop by the office!

Volunteer Appreciation Party


135 volunteers attended the Volunteer Appreciation Event held on April 16th. Everyone

received a special “Thank You” gift, that had the theme of the party, Who-o-o Makes a Difference? Volunteers Like Yoooooou! Plus, we had wonderful door prizes donated by local businesses and were able to give each attendee a door prize. Jim Geiger enter-tained us with his accordion music. We want the volunteers to know how important they are to our organization and hope they enjoyed this special afternoon. Great Plains Food Bank The Great Plains Food Bank is hosting the Summer Food Service Program in Bismarck again this summer! Volunteers hand out prepackaged meals to children who would otherwise go without lunch during the summer. Shifts are once a week for 2 hours. Substitutes also welcome!

HARD WORK’N VOLUNTEERS – THANK YOU… Thank you very much to those volunteers who helped us make the Health & Learning Day a success. Over 300 people attended this very lovely day. We appreciate your help with registration, gift shop sales, packing lunches, tour guiding, answering the busy phones, meal ticketing, etc. We could not have done all this without your SENSATIONAL assistance!

FEATURED VOLUNTEER: FRANCES KELSCH

Frances Kelsch has volunteered her time with the Bismarck Senior Center for the past five years and has been very active. She has served on the Advisory Committee and the Senior Club board. She helps serve coffee at the Noon congregate meals, embroiders dish towels to be sold in the gift shop and attends most of the events held at the Center. She likes to help out wherever she is needed. Volunteering gives her great satisfaction. Frances’ first impression of the Bismarck Senior Center was that it was well taken care of and clean. She says it is a great place to see and meet people because everyone is so pleasant. Frances recommends more people should eat here, as the food is so good! Thank you Frances for all the good work that you do with that lovely smile you have! You are greatly appreciated!
