From the Publisher

TTTThe signs of spring are definitely here. I grew some tulips in a ceramic pot by thekitchen door last year and this year they have started to shoot up in mid February, a

sure sign? The garden is slowly coming to life and one knows this, not by the snowdropsor crocuses coming up, but by the seed and young plant catalogues that land on thedoormat almost daily! Persephone will once again be in our midst, prising herself fromthe underworld of Hades (sorry, my ‘Greekness’ pops out from time to time!)

March is always my favourite month as my birthday falls in this month, and I am verypleased to report that I can make my birthday celebrations continue for an entire week.

I was contacted by Mid-Surrey Link who work with Chernobyl Children’s Life Line as theyare just starting their project for 2011 when members of our community play their part insupporting children from Belarus. The children come to the UK for a recuperative breakfrom the after-effects of the Chernobyl disaster. A few weeks’ break from radiation, eating nourishing food and breathing clean air, is believed to improve their healthsignificantly by giving their immune systems a chance to recover. More informationabout how you can help can be found on page 28.

If you’re into ‘CSI’ then once again the Holy Cross School in New Malden is running itsfree Forensic Science course from June. Details of the course and how to apply can befound on page 40.

2011 is the Macmillan Cancer Support centenary, and they are challenging localbusinesses, organisations and individuals to raisefunds by signing up to the Macmillan Centenary 100year challenge, page 44.

A really interesting and useful project has startedcalled Surrey Reuse Network, made up of sixcharities, it’s ethos is a simple one: to offer a widerange of good quality items (furniture and kitchenappliances) at affordable prices as well as offeringtraining and employment opportunities to help localfamilies in need. I think we are all more conscious ofthe need to recycle and this is a great way of donatingor buying used goods, page 76.

Lots of new businesses have come on board for Marchand I am sure you will be as excited as I am todiscover the diversity and sheer number of businessestrading in the local area, and long may it continue.

Don’t forget to put your clocks forward before youretire on Sunday 27th March and I’m sure, like most ofyou, I shall be commenting on how light it is for 6pmon that first Sunday!

Fingers crossed for a mild and colourful spring, I, forone, can’t wait to take off my coat!

Tatty bye,

It is becoming clearer that the effectsof cuts in local government finance andthe introduction of “Localism” willpresent every community with bothdifficult choices and major challenges.

The impact of cuts is yet to be fullyfelt but the introduction of on-streetparking charges by Surrey CountyCouncil across the county and thepublic outcry about the closure ofmany libraries are perhaps a taste ofthings to come. Other plans arestarting to form which will need aconsiderable increase in theinvolvement of the voluntary sector.

The full impact of these major changesupon our community is as yet unclear. But I believe that Ashtead residentsface a major challenge. How do werespond positively, take advantage ofopportunities offered and engage moreeffectively with local government tosafeguard our community?

Ashtead has a strong tradition ofvoluntary activity and communityinvolvement. It should therefore bewell placed to respond positively. Some examples are the workundertaken by Ashtead GoodNeighbours to assist with travelarrangements, the Ashtead Churches’Community Trust which raised moneyto hire an additional youth worker andthe varied charitable activities ofRotary.

Looking forward, it seems to me thatone of the challenges will be forrepresentatives of the various localgroups to work more closely togetherto harness the strong community spiritand identity we enjoy. Over thecoming months, this will therefore bereceiving our increased attention.

These changes are also likely toprovide excellent opportunities formore residents to be directly involvedin the development and operation ofour community. If some involvementmay appeal to you, please let me know([email protected]),as we are starting to plan for whatcould be a challenging and rewardingnew era.

We live in interesting times. For as I write thiswe have just heard that the Olympic cycleraces will come through Westcott andDorking , up the zig zag to Boxhill and thenthrough Leatherhead and on to Kingston. Thiswill be shown on giant screens in the Dorkingand the Red House Gardens, in Leatherhead. In preparation for this international view ofour Town, it will be necessary to get the placelooking spic and span. Hopefully theResidents’ Association will be at the centre ofthis and ensuring that the world sees us as wewould like it to.

But that is not all. The Government isproposing to turn much of the delivery of localservices upside down, so Parish Councils andResidents’ Associations will set the agenda forthe delivery of services, such as Planning andHealth Care. This is not a matter of trying touse unpaid volunteers to do the work ofCouncil officers, nor is it a scheme to pushCouncillors to one side. But this is to get thelocal people to plan their Town themselvesrather than be told from on high what is goodfor them. To start with, a few areas will beselected in which to try out the idea. Some ofyou may have seen a TV programme on BBC2just before Christmas which suggested thatLeatherhead might be an ideal town to showthis off. I missed it as I was abroad. But sincethen things have moved on, and next week weshall know whether or not our bid has been

successful. This will be history to you ofcourse by the time you read this.

Over the years, Leatherhead has been veryconscious of its image to the rest of the world. It is not so long ago that the Council tried topresent us with a water-feature where thecross roads had been before the clock-towerstood there. A public consultation was held inwhich only 80 or so responses were received. Then the Council pushed ahead with theirplans causing an outcry and over 500 peoplecrammed into the Theatre to pour scorn uponthe Councillors and Council Officers.Nevertheless the County Council still pushedahead with their plans until they found a largeunderground concrete construction. This, rather than the democratic voice of thetownsfolk finally won the day.

Following this, the ‘Health check’ was bornand this lead on to the creation of a limitedcompany to turn ideas into practice.Undoubtedly this has weighed heavily in favourof making the Town a possible ‘Vanguard’leader in the democratic experiment. So whatshould we do? Well as a first step you shouldjoin and support your Resident’s Association, whether it is for Leatherhead or one of thesurrounding villages, get involved! The eyes ofthe world will be upon us!

Residents have their say on Leatherhead’s Future

Residents of all ages attended a recent exhibition on 28 and 29 January in Leatherhead onthe future of the town centre.

The exhibition featured the findings of a consultation held in autumn 2010 by Mole ValleyDistrict Council and Surrey County Council. During the consultation the councils askedresidents and businesses how Leatherhead should be improved.

The exhibition gave the communitythe chance to comment further onwhich areas the councils shouldprioritise. Once all views have beentaken into account the councils willfinalise where they will spend thefunding they have been given bydevelopers to make theimprovements.

A number of written and verbalcomments were collected during theexhibition. These join the 120 pagesof written comments that peoplesent to the two councils during theconsultation process viaquestionnaires.

Opinion is united among thecommunity on the need to look afterwhat we have better. It is beingsuggested that access for vehicles tothe High Street during the eveningshould continue, but with bettermanagement of car parking to avoidinconvenience to pedestrians andshops. More space should also bemade for the outside tables andchairs that belong to the town’smany restaurants.

There is also a proposal to review thenumber and type of seats, litter bins and other street furniture to make the town centremore attractive. These could also stop car drivers from accessing areas that are vulnerableto damage or areas that have parking restrictions.

The councils will also consider redesigning the entrance to the pedestrian zone close to TheLeatherhead Theatre.

Tim Hall, Surrey County Council Cabinet Member for Change and Efficiency, said:“Immediate funding is limited but we intend to make a start on essential maintenancewithin a few weeks and reach agreement on other projects to be developed over the nextcouple of years.”

The exhibition display can be viewed on the Mole Valley District Councilwebsite: www.molevalley.gov.uk. Send your comments to Rod Shaw:[email protected]. The Mole Valley Local Committee will consider areport on the consultation on 3 March and the Mole Valley District CouncilExecutive on 5 April.

Making it in Mole ValleyThis spring residents in North Leatherhead are invited to get involved in a series ofworkshops run by professional craft-makers as part of the Making Surrey community project. The project is being organised by Mole Valley District Council and is funded by ArtsPartnership Surrey and The National Lottery.

Residents will get the chance to come together, have fun and get creative throughworkshops, in which they will explore how to solve issues ranging from anti-social behaviourto littering and fly tipping.

During the project, which will run until Christmas time, the craft-makers will take upresidency in Leatherhead alongside the community.

There will be opportunities for aspiring or established local artists to develop their skills andvolunteer for future community development projects.

There will also be apprenticeships aimed at residents who wish to specialise in communityengagement work, with the craft-makers as mentors.

Workshops will take place in North Leatherhead and involve different community groups, including the new Leatherhead Community Garden at West Hill School. More details will beannounced soon.

Seven other Surrey councils are involved in Making Surrey, and are running similar activitiesfor their communities.

In Mole Valley the project is being organised by the Partnerships and CommunityDevelopment team.

I guess people don’t give much thought tocat flaps – why would they?! – but afascinating fact is that they have beenaround in one form or another for over 400

years – they werefirst invented in the17th century by SirIsaac Newtonspecifically so thathis feline friendscould come and goas they wishedwithout letting toomuch light into hislaboratory. 400 yearson the cat flap isstill the best &

simplest way to let your cat circulate inand out of the house.

Here at Cats Protection we recommendthat every cat owner install a cat flap.Let's face it, cats are very independentcreatures (and this is part of the reasonwhy the Egyptians worshiped them. Theirindependence from humans is greater thanany other animal on earth) and they canget very frustrated if we don't let them outexactly when they wantto go out. A simple catflap means that yourcat will retain theirmuch neededindependence & havethe freedom to choosewhen to go outside andenjoy the sunshine or fresh air wheneverthey want without bothering you. If theyfeel like sunbathing, they simply walkthrough the flap. They want to go outsideand chase butterflies? They walk throughthe flap. When they are done and want toeat, drink or sleep, they will come backinside using the cat flap.

Sometimes, if you have both cats anddogs, it’s a good idea to install a cat flap

not only on your exterior door, but also asmaller cat flap on a door that leads toanother room in the house. This way, youcan give your cat access to another, saferroom where it can hide if it’s beingchased. Also, because dogs will eatwhatever you put in front of them, including cat food, if you have a dog and acat, you can leave the cat food in theother room where the dog can’t reach it!Furthermore, given the appalling coldweather we have just had, whenconditions are that harsh, if left outsidethe house for extended periods your catcan get frostbite on its ears, paws, andnose. And not being able to get insideeasily leaves your cat in a vulnerableposition, both in the countryside and inthe city. By having a cat flap installed, your cat can escape both cold weather anddanger from the exterior.

A simple cat flap therefore will not onlysave you time and energy, but will alsokeep your cat safer & make him a muchhappier pet.

I’m not sure what Sir Isaacs cat flap wasmade of but these days’ cat flaps can besimple manual devices, or run on infraredor they can even be electronic, workingwith your pets microchip to ensure onlythose kitties who live with you are allowedin. Fitting a flap is easy – in doors, walls &even double glazing.

26th April 2011 marks the 25th anniversary ofthe Chernobyl accident and today’s childrenof Belarus are still suffering from the after-effects; they are living with a tragedy whichnot only did not occur in their lifetime, it didnot even happen in their country.

The contamination in Belarus will remain forthousands of years until the radioactivefallout from the explosion has decayed to a“safe” level, and in the meantime it’s aninescapable legacy that the people of Belaruslive with on a daily basis. And one thing thatparents are desperate for is the chance fortheir children to have a break away from it.

That’s where the Mid-Surrey Link comes in.At a recent meeting in St George’s ChristianCentre, the chairman of the Mid-Surrey Link,Maurice Jones, explained how the nationalcharity Chernobyl Children Life Line (CCLL)was set up shortly after the accident to try tohelp those suffering from the after-effects ofthe Chernobyl disaster. Every year familiescontinue to invite children from Belarus intotheir homes as part of this initiative.

The Mid-Surrey Link has operated in Ashtead,Epsom and Leatherhead since 2002, withmembers of our community playing their partin supporting children from Belarus luckyenough to come to the UK. The childrencome to the UK for a recuperative breakfrom the after-effects of the Chernobyldisaster. A four-week break from radiation,

eating nourishing food and breathing cleanair, is believed to improve their healthsignificantly by giving their immune systemsa chance to recover.

The Mid-Surrey Link is looking for volunteersliving within easy reach of Epsom andAshtead to act as hosts, or to support a host, for two weeks between Wednesday 20thJuly -Wednesday 17th August 2011. Outings andactivities are organised for the children, andtheir hosts and supports can join in withmany of these if they wish.

Fundraising for the 2011 visit received akickstart at the end of January when wewere invited to be the supporting charity forthe January Ashtead Bridge Drive, raisingenough funds to bring across one child thissummer.

If you are interested in finding outmore about how you could help thechildren of Belarus, please contactthe Link on 01372 741228, visit ourwebsite: www.midsurreylink.org, orcome along to our next InformationEvening at 8.15pm on Tuesday 8thMarch at St George's ChristianCentre, Hall, Barnett Wood Lane,Ashtead, KT21 2DA

Weight No LongerEllen Clark has taken over the Ashtead Slimming World group on a Monday at 7pmat the Ashtead Baptist Church, Barnet Wood Lane. The weekly sessions are for anyone in thelocal community looking to lose weight. Ellen is a recent convert to the SlimmingWorld approach after deciding to lose weight for her daughter’s forthcomingwedding.

Ellen explained, “my first experience of Slimming World was at Tadworth.I went along to the Christmas countdown session in October and when Ifirst walked through the door, I was struck by the sound of partycelebrations and was surprised to see a table full of festive food anddrink! I love cooking and this delicious food made a great firstimpression. However, I did wonder if I was in the right place! I am verypleased to report I was and from day one I really enjoyed the friendlyand supportive atmosphere within the group. Slimming World has nowbecome very much part of my social diary and by leading my own groupI hope my experience will help others to regain their confidence, asI have mine.”

Slimming World’s food optimising with Extra Easy allows members toenjoy generous unlimited portions of “free foods” such as meat, fish, pasta, rice, fruit and vegetables so there is no need to ever go hungry orfeel restricted when eating out.

Ruth's daughter, Sarah, was given a bug habitat forChristmas. It consisted of a large plastic casecontaining a fake looking green and brown plasticlog, surrounded by an equally fake blue plastic'stream'. It was covered in a clear plastic coverwith a hole at the top, next to a magnified sectionin order to view delighted bugs in their cosy newworld...

On a surprisingly sunny March day, Ruth suggestedthat Sarah go and explore the garden for insects toput in her habitat. Sarah thought this was a greatidea and immediately assumed the persona of theworld's greatest naturalist, searching tropicaljungles for new species. Ruth stood at the kitchenwindow and watched her daughter scoop uphandfuls of earth, hoping that Sam wouldn't be tooconcerned about the seeds he had sown in theflower bed only the weekend before. She thenwent to the computer to catch up with some e-mails, leaving strict instructions with Ben to keepan eye on his little sister.

An hour later, she found Sarah at the kitchen table, sifting through earth filled saucepans and fryingpans, using her kitchen sieve to locate insects andher eyebrow tweezers to extricate them and dropthen through the hole in the case. Ruth tried notto notice the muddy trail of footprints leading fromthe back door.

Sarah was having a wonderful time. She had re-homed all manner of creepy crawlies, naming eachone as it plummeted into its new plastic home. There was Colin the Caterpillar, Eddie the Earwigand William the Worm. Apparently there were alsotwo ants called Ant and Dec, and severalunidentified creatures called Ollie, Justin,Leonardo and Bob. Interestingly they seemed to beall boys. Sarah then posted leaves, earth andflowers into the box and added half a glass of tapwater for good measure. She proudly placed her'case of creatures' on the window sill and went offto watch television.

Over the next couple of days Sarah lovingly tendedher to her menagerie, adding more leaves, flowersand water. Her brother Daniel also thought itwould be interesting to add a custard cream. Theinsects were hidden from view but she was veryhappy with her new pets. After four days, the sludgy mess in the case wasbeginning to smell. Ruth took it off the window silland gingerly opened the lid. Sadly Ant, Dec, Colin,Eddy, William, Ollie, Justin, Leonardo and Bob hadnot coped very well with their new surroundings.Ruth tipped the drowned corpses into the gardenand washed the box out. She then saw the emptycase and pictured Sarah's despondent face.

Ten minutes later she was rubber gloved andrummaging in the flowerbed. She located

replacement creatures and dropped them into thecase, adding leaves and flowers but decidingagainst a replacement custard cream.

Sarah was very excited when she got home fromschool and headed straight to the window sill."Hello boys, how are you today in your lovely littlehome? Wow, you must have been hungry, you'veeaten the custard cream! You're all going to haveto squidge up and make room soon because you'regoing to have some new friends!"

"Sarah Darling, I think there are more than enoughcreepy crawlies in there and you mustn't give themso much water. They don't like it. Why don't youput them back in the garden to live in their naturalhabitat. They can't really be happy living in aplastic case. They'd much rather be in the gardenwith their friends. They need fresh air andsunshine."

"You're wrong Mummy! They get lots of sunshinethrough the window and they seem so happy. They've been there for four days now and look howhealthy they are! I'll leave the lid off for a while togive them some fresh air, if you like.""No! Leave the lid on please! I don't want Eddiethe Earwig and his friends loose in my house thankyou very much!"

"Anyway, they're going to have new friends soon.I've heard that someone at school has loads ofthem. I just have to find out who it is. They'rebound to have some spare to give to me.""What are you talking about?"

"Here, it says in this letter." Sarah produced acrumpled piece of paper from her pocket. "Wehave been informed that someone in your child'sclass has a case of head lice... Imagine that! Awhole case full! They would love it in my habitat!"

Tony Buzan, author of umpteen books onmind and memory came up with this simple 4point formula for life. I was happy to see theF word at the top of the list & all four pointsvital for strong immunity.

1. Superb quality food2. Plenty of O2 - exercise, breathe, open

air3. Interest - activity for little grey cells4. Love

What's the purpose of the immune system? To defend against attack & help initiaterepair.Clearly. the better it defends & repairs, thebetter our health.

How can we optimise our immunity?1. Strengthen the whole immune 'army' - so

the body can defend itself2. Destroy unfriendly invaders - viruses,

bacteria, yeasts etc3. Clean up our environment - indoors & out

- minimise indoor pollutants, filter water, regularly remove heavy metals frombody.

4. Choose nutrient rich food & a balancedlifestyle. Poor food choice, can unbalancethe digestive system, upset eliminationsystem—which affects the immunesystem's ability to do its job, mind &emotions.

What Other Foods heal?Eat healthy fats— Omega 3's & 6's help theimmune system recognize what is self or non-self. This is key for cancer control. Theimmune system needs O3s & O6 fats tomanufacture compounds which kill germs &invaders.

We need them in a ratio of about 1:1 to 2:1.In the last 50/60 years, our “civilized world”has changed that ratio to 20:1 or 30:1, or50:1. Steer clear of highly refined oils - cornoil, safflower oil, cottonseed oil, peanut oil, soybean - all high in Omega 6s. We needOmega 3s.Grass fed beef maintains those fats in thehealthy ratio of 1:1 to 2:1, but grain fed beef

virtually all supermarketbeef - takes on the fatratio of the grain used tofatten it, i.e. 20:1, 30:1,and on up to 50:1.Walnuts, flax seeds, Chiaseeds, fish, pumpkinseeds are also high inOmega 3s

You will feel thedifference as you makechanges. What we think about andvisualise we movetowards.

Volunteers needed to lead organised cycle ridesIf you’re seriously into cycling, you might find that becominga volunteer cycle leader is right up your street.

GO50 is looking for new leaders who can commit to leadingother cyclists in following a particular route on a particularday of your choice. You can plan your own routes or use oneof our many existing routes. All rides are advertised in ourquarterly programme, available from libraries or fromwww.acsurrey.org.uk/go50/cycling.

You will receive support and friendship from our team ofexperienced volunteer leaders, many of whom have beenwith the programme since it started ten years ago.

We need leaders located anywhere in Surrey – however, cyclists willing to lead rides anywhere east of Leatherheadare especially welcome, as the east of the county is lesswell-covered in our programme.

The programme aims to introduce people in the 50+ age group to a healthier lifestyle andthe benefits of regular exercise. Socialising as you exercise adds significantly to thebeneficial effects. Regular exercise can lower blood pressure, alleviate depression anddefend against heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

The Warren Estate – The Duckhams - Ashtead

For information regarding Membership, Lectures and Museum opening hourscontact: Leatherhead & District Local History Society, Leatherhead Museum,Hampton Cottage, 64 Church Street, Leatherhead, KT22 8DPTel: 01372 386348mail to: [email protected]: www.leatherheadlocalhistory.org.uk

The Warren Estate c.1930s

In 1921 Ashtead had a population of 3,226 which had increased to 4,783 by 1931, nearly50% in ten years. As in the immediate pre-war decades, Ashtead was continuing toattract commuters. After the end of the First World War, builders were quick toacquire land where they could erect houses for the purchase by outsiders, mainlyLondoners.

The Warren Estate was one of the areas developed at this time, mainly for large houses.Even a golf course, begun as part of the planned Estate development, but was nevercompleted. With its spacious houses on large plots, the Estate attracted men who haddone very well out of the war and able to pay the then very high prices of around £2,000to £3,000.

One of the most impressive of these houses was High Warren, finished in 1922 andcontaining three oak panelled reception rooms and six bedrooms. This was for manyyears the residence of Sir Arthur and Lady Maud Duckham. Sir Arthur McDougallDuckham born in 1879 at Blackheath, London, was a Gas Engineer. He was one of thefounders of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, and its first President. He wasKnighted for services rendered in the Ministry of Munitions during the Great War. Hedied in 1932 and is buried in St Giles' Ashtead graveyard. Lady Maud was the daughterof landscape painter Arthur Peppercorn (b.1847), who lived for many years at Longreach,West Horsley, but died 1926 in Ashtead.

The Ashtead Winter Ball at the Duchess’s StandThe very first Winter Ball organised by Ashtead Conservativeswas a tremendous success just prior to Christmas, with 270people of all ages dancing the night away in the Diomed Roomat the Duchess’s Stand at Epsom Downs.

A welcoming Champagne reception got the evening off to agreat start and after a delicious 3 course meal with coffee &mints there was the excitement of an Auction & Raffle in aidof Help for Heroes. Tempting Auction lots included: a dinnerparty for 6 in your home; a signed Manchester United footballshirt; a Driving Experience at Mercedes Benz World; a day asa Racehorse Owner; a signed print by Ashtead artist ShereeValentine Daines; and a bottle of House of Commons

Champagne signed by the Prime Minister, David Cameron. Guests watched excerpts from a DVDshowing the miraculous achievements of the staff at our very own Headley Court in helping ourservice personnel walk again after amputations and grievous injuries. It was very moving andpeople gave generously.

Dancing to a cool jazzy combo ‘Wired’ carried on until midnight, punctuated only by visits to theCasino tables where blackjack and roulette were available to test revellers’ skills and all for aprize for the person ending up with the most gambling chips at the end of the evening.

Ashtead Conservatives are delighted to announce that as a result of The Winter Ball, a donation of£7000 will be made to Help for Heroes. Thanks are extended to everyone who participated and tothe local business people who advertised or donated raffle prizes and auction lots. A really greatcommunity effort and a lot of fun! Book Reviews

Becoming LolaHarriet SteelIt is strange that Lola is solittle known today. In herown time and for manyyears after her death in1860, she was, after QueenVictoria, the most famouswoman in the world, albeitfor rather different reasons.Whilst the queen was amodel of propriety, Lola’scareer included scores oflove affairs, including theone with Ludwig I, whichwas so unpopular with the Bavarian people that hehad to abdicate when he refused to give her up.

She married three times, twice bigamously. Therewere also several incidents where shehorsewhipped or stabbed men who fell foul of herlegendary temper, as well as numerous court casesin which she often represented herself. Her risquéSpanish dancing, in particular her trademark SpiderDance, drew full houses and she toured the Easternseaboard of America, the gold rush country ofCalifornia, and Australia’s cities and outback withgreat success. A consummate self-publicist, if shehad lived today, she would rarely have been out ofthe tabloids and would probably have taught KatiePrice a trick or two.

Edith SitwellRichard Greene£25.00Born into a privilegedfamily of eccentrics,Edith Sitwell set outduring the years ofthe Great War tocreate a life in thearts. A friend ofSiegfried Sassoon, T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolfand Gertrude Stein, she ran an unlikelyLondon literary salonthat attracted most ofthe great writers andartists of the day. Herquips and anecdotes

grew legendary, and she established herself as thequintessential poet of the Blitz. Regarded in herown time as a truly great poet, for the better partof forty years Sitwell's work has been neglected bycritics intimidated by her large gestures. Thismeticulously researched, groundbreaking andbrilliant biography allows readers to grasp her

poetry anew and to experience its humanity and itsbeauty, while at the same time turning much ofwhat we have ever learned about modern Britishpoetry on its head.

Birds BritanniaStephen Moss £17.99We Brits love our birds. Theyhold a special place in ourhearts – whether it's thesound of birdsong on a springmorning, the sight of a BarnOwl hunting on a summer'sevening, or a Robin perchedon our garden spade. In thisbook, Stephen Moss focusseson some of our most belovedand charismatic birds. Heexplores their fascinatingbiology, and their place in

the evolving culture and history of the Britishpeople. The author delves into the worlds of Sea Birds(Puffin, Sea Eagle and Gannet), Water Birds(Kingfisher, Swan and Avocet), Countryside Birds(Red Grouse, Nightingale and Skylark ) and Town &Garden Birds (Robin, House Sparrow and Magpie),weaving their stories together to tell four verydifferent stories about the changing face ofBritain.

The Yellow HouseBlake Morrison £11.99

A favourite back inprint! One day, on theway to the park, alittle girl climbs thegate of an old yellowhouse. Although no onehas lived there for avery long time, a littleboy suddenly appearsbefore her. “Come and

play with me,” he beckons. He leads her throughan enchanted garden, showing her all itsmarvellous inhabitants: a tiger playing with itscubs in the long grass, a dolphin leaping in thegoldfish pond, a pelican roosting high in the appletree. Then the mysterious boy is gone, the girl’smother is calling, and all is as it was before. In thiswell-loved picture book, Blake Morrison and HelenCraig bring us to a place where, for a moment, magic is real.

Work / Life BalanceWork / Life BalanceWork / Life BalanceWork / Life Balance

Twenty four hours. That's all we get. No amount of wishing, complaining, ormanipulating will ever change that. Each day contains only so many hours, each weekjust so many days. Yet the amount we must try to squeeze into those hours can bemind-boggling.

Top tips…

• Prioritise. Not everything is urgent or even necessary. Focus on what's mostimportant and set other things on the back burner.

• Ask for help. Don't make the mistake of trying to do it all on your own. Callupon a friend, family member, or colleague. People are often glad to lend ahelping hand. (Wouldn't you do the same for them?)

• Take a break. In 30 minutes or less, you can de-stress, refocus, and re-energizeyourself. Why not read a book, take a walk, or ride your bike? When time's up,get back to work. Your improved effectiveness and productivity will more thanmake up for the 30 minutes of "down time."

• Say no! You don't have to agree to every request that comes your way. Both atwork and at home, it's perfectly appropriate, healthy (and necessary) to setlimits on which tasks and activities you will add to your already full schedule.

• Stop trying to be perfect. There's very little in life that has to be done to thepoint of perfection. Few people notice the difference between a job well doneand a job perfectly done. Do it well and then move on.

The reality is that it will never be easy to balance the demands of work, family, andlife itself. Find gratification in your work, enjoy your family and friends, take pride inyour accomplishments. With the proper balance and perspective, life can be morethan simply manageable. It can and should be rewarding, engaging, and at timessimply magnificent.

What’s On?

Earth, Sea & SkyAshtead Choral Society will be returning to Dorking Halls with awonderful concert entitled Earth, Sea and Sky celebrating themusic of local legend Ralph Vaughan Williams.

The Norfolk Rhapsody No 1 will be performed by the London GalaOrchestra. When folksong meets classical music, it’s usually as a rhapsody. VaughanWilliams gathered together a number of Norfolk folksongs and constructed 3rhapsodies. After their initial performances and for unknown reasons, Williamswithdrew all three but the first was revived and published in 1925 with a tender endingreplacing the original lively finish.

Local young violinist, Rebecca Baker, will be presenting the notoriously demanding butpoignant work for violin and orchestra, The Lark Ascending. This was written in 1914and was inspired by George Meredith’s poem of the same name about the skylark. Thework was written for and dedicated to the English violinist, Marie Hall, who gave thefirst performance with piano accompaniment.

The choir will be conducted by Paul Dodds, accompanied by the London Gala Orchestraand joined by Sally Harrison (soprano) and last year’s Kathleen Ferrier award winner,South African Njabulo Madlala (baritone).

The concert will be held on Saturday 2nd April 2011 at 7.30pm. Tickets for thisamazing concert are priced at £17, £15 or £12 (half price for under 18) andcan be obtained from the ACS Box Office Manager on 01372 275369

Theft from residential properties in threeareas of Surrey has dropped dramaticallyfollowing the use of forensic propertymarking solution SelectaDNA byhouseholders. Burglaries from homes inGuildford, Elmbridge, and Epsom and Ewell, fell on average by 66% in the six monthsfollowing the launch of the project and 58%when compared to the same time period theprevious year.

Following the success of the initiative, partof Surrey Police’s Beat the Burglar campaign, all residents in the county are now beingoffered the chance to buy a SelectaDNAhome property marking kit at a reducedprice.

SelectaDNA is a uniquely coded, non-toxicliquid enabling homeowners to ‘forensicallymark’ valuable posessions such as laptops, games consoles, jewellery, electrical itemsand tools. It can also be used to markproperty stored outside the home, includinggarden equipment, pedal cycles etc. Barelyvisible to the naked eye and almostimpossible to remove, the solution glowsunder ultraviolet (UV) light making it easy forpolice to detect and return property to therightful owner, if stolen.

Mole Valley Crime Reduction Advisor, PC MikeBessent, has been involved in working in ourcommunity and demonstrating the benefits ofusing this product and would recommend itto residents and businesses.

Householders can buy the SelectaDNAhome property marking kit at 40%discount until the end of April 2011.Call 01689 860757 or visitwww.selectadna.co.uk/surrey-police.html

Have you ever wondered what you can do to cut your domestic fuel bills andreduce your carbon foot print? Transition Ashtead Energy Group has been set upto help you do just that! The problem is, where do you start? Getting the rightinformation and advice is crucial before you make any decisions - to help withthis, the Energy Group organised a Solar Energy event at the beginning ofthis, the Energy Group organised a Solar Energy event at the beginning ofFebruary at the APMH. Over 70 people attended, eager to find out aboutrenewable energy installations. Four speakers came along to give practical andtechnical information about installing solar energy (photo-voltaic or PV) panels and

solar water heating systems (solar thermal). They also explained the all-importantFeed-in Tariff (FiT) scheme. The FiT means that once you have installed PV panels, as wellas reducing your carbon emissions, you sell the electricity generated to the National Grid, and you can expect a tax-freereturn on the capital investment ofaround 8%. You get paid by thegovernment for generatingelectricity, a good deal for thehouseholder and a good deal forthe UK, as we as a country arecommitted to reducing our carbonemissions by 15% by 2020. Othercountries, particularly Germany, are well ahead of us in domesticand industrial PV electricitygeneration, so there is plenty ofscope for us to increase ourrenewable power generation. We have a similar sunshine profile to Germany, so don’t thinkthe UK isn’t sunny enough to make it worth while! PV panels work best in locations withsloping roofs with a southerly aspect, (from south east through to south west).

Flat roofs can also be used as long as they have a sunny aspect. The Energy Group is alsoplanning to set up a “buyers club” so local people can join together and negotiate withsuppliers a reduced price for renewable-energy products. If you missed the event but wouldlike to join the buyers club, contact Barrie Mould - contact details below.

The Energy Group has also joined Actio2n Surrey to help with the “Surrey Green Homes”scheme. The aim is to assist households to upgrade the existing housing stock byencouraging energy efficiency measures and renewable technology. On March 26/27th therewill be an “open–house” weekend, where householders with these measures andtechnologies in their homes invite others to see what they have done. Things on display inthis area will include the solar panels and water heating systems already mentioned, upgraded loft insulation, double and secondary glazing, wood-burning stoves and air andground source heat pumps. If you are considering installing any of these things, register foran Eco-homes visit www.actionsurrey.org and get some up-to-date and practicalinformation from people who have done it already!

Many gardeners think they can’t grow fruit inthe garden, either because they feel they donot have the space or because they fear thatthe fruit will be damaged by cold weather inspring. However, it is possible to grow mosttree and soft fruit in containers and pots;these will not only take up very little space, but can also be moved under cover in badweather, if necessary. Container growing alsogives all gardeners the opportunity to growexotic fruit, such as citrus, which cannot beplanted out of doors in this country, as well asthose like blueberries, which are very fussyabout soil. If grown well, container fruits willyield reasonable quantities of fruit but, perhaps as important, they look very handsomeon a patio, and can even be used as mini-orchards or moveable components of gardendesign.

Tree fruits grown specifically for pot useare often grafted on to ‘semi-dwarfing’rootstocks, although the size of pot and thefinite amount of compost in it will restrict rootand top growth in any event. Any fruit treevariety grafted onto a dwarfing rootstockneeds to be grown in a fertile, well-drainedsoil, such as John Innes No 3 compost, whichcontains loam and is suitable for plantsgrowing permanently in pots. Blueberries andcranberries need a very acid soil; these shouldbe planted in a proprietary ‘ericaceous’compost. Citrus are also best in a dedicatedcitrus compost.

Plant the tree into a pot which is slightlylarger than the one from which it came, if it iscontainerised, or big enough to comfortablycontain the roots, if it is bare-rooted. (Bare-rooted trees are planted in the dormantseason, while containerised plants can beplanted at any time.) With the latter, makesure that the roots are not ‘pot-bound’. If theyare badly girdled, return the tree to theretailer; otherwise, tease them out carefully.Put a few flattish stones over the holes at thebottom, then place the tree in the centre, filling in all round with compost. The treeshould be planted at the same depth as it wasin the nursery, about 5 cms (2 ins) below therim of the pot to allow for watering.

Trees on dwarfing rootstocks will needstaking since they don’t make extensive rootsystems. A bamboo cane and small tree ties

are often sufficient; check them from time totime to see they are not biting into the bark.

Put the pot onto pot feet or bricks, so thatwater can drain out freely. Repot every year inautumn, into a slightly larger pot each time, until you have reached about 37.5 cms (15inches) for gooseberries, say, and 45 cms (18ins) for apples. Investing in a pot trolley makessense if you need to move pots under cover inwinter.

A watchful watering and feeding regime isessential if the plant is to thrive and producefruit, which sets and comes to maturity. Themain cause of fruit drop is uneven orinsufficient watering. Mulch the surface of thecompost in spring, and use a high-potash liquidfeed frequently once the fruits have formed.Little water is required in winter, because theplants are dormant.

Hardy fruits, such as apples and pears, canremain outside in the winter, but the roots arevulnerable in very cold weather, so thecontainers should be enclosed in bubble wrap(leaving the top clear for watering), and put ina place sheltered from freezing winds.Conversely, in very hot weather in summer, roots of any plant in a pot can be damaged byheat, so place the containers in the shadeduring heatwaves.
