From the Publisher

W ell that was grisly Easter weather wasn’t it? However, since then we have at laststarted to see some lovely warm days, how lovely - and the daffodils, tulips and

hyacinths are all starting to make a welcome appearance after such a long winter.

May sees the annual Leatherhead Drama Festival, which starts on Monday 3rd May for twoweeks, culminating in the Gala Evening on Saturday 15th May. This is the biggest festival ofits type in the UK with up to three plays per evening! More information about the event andhow and where to purchase your tickets, can be found on pages 12 and 13.

Richard Leary, who is the Youth Worker in charge of the Ashtead Youth Centre in BarnetWood Lane Recreation Ground, has written a lovely piece about his work with localyoungsters since 1998. He works closely with Gary Nash, the ACCT Youth Worker, and I thinkyou will enjoy reading Richard’s piece about his experience with local young people.Richard has also asked one of the young members to add a little about his experience of theyouth club and I am hoping that this will be the first of many articles written for themagazine by Richard and his group. It would be good to hear from time to time about thegood work that is going on down there. More can be found on page 52.

As I go to print, we are in the midst of election fever, well, more of a tepid flush really.Election day falls on 6th May and we shall all be waking up on Friday 7th to some interestingor wildly unexpected news - depending on your viewpoint. One of my advertisers, SmartCare, is offering the elderly and infirm, living on the distribution route of the Ashtead &

Leatherhead Local magazine, free lifts to the pollingstations around the area, give them a call to arrangethis in advance - go to page 18 for more details.

A new feature about the Cats Protection, Epsom, Ewelland District, started in the April edition and willcontinue onwards in order to give a cat a home. Theyhave many cats desperate for new homes and thismonth George & Bungle are their cats of the month(page 38).

The British Red Cross have two separate articles in themagazine this month, if you don’t fancy bungeejumping (page 22), then perhaps a donation may suit?Page 58.

Mole Valley Police are keen to warn us about a creditcard scam currently operating in this area, their articleappears on page 72.

Phew, this month’s issue is a jam-packed one. Inaddition, the June issue will feature a pull-out sectionin the centre covering this year’s Ashtead Village Dayon Saturday 12th June.

I hope you have a great May with its two lovely BankHoliday Mondays!

Tatty bye.

It seems to me that the needs of youngpeople in Ashtead have not received thepriority they deserve. There have howeverbeen several recent developments whichsuggest that this is changing.

• The proposal to build a Skatepark in therecreation ground gave rise to manyconcerns but in practice it is proving to bewell used and popular. Credit is due to allthose who drove through this initiative.

• A group of mums has got together toimprove the play facilities on therecreation ground and has formed theAshtead Recreation Campaign - ARC. Theyhave been energetic, well organised andhighly successful both in raising funds andincreasing awareness of the need. Theirplans have progressed rapidly and, withsupport from Mole Valley District Council, long overdue improvement in the level ofplay provision is now a realistic prospect.

• A part time youth team based at theYouth Centre on Barnett Wood Lane, ablyled by Richard Leary, is doing outstandingwork with a group of local young peopleon very limited resources. The team isexperienced, committed and resourcefuland is providing a much needed service toprovide support, a caring environment andconstructive activities.

• As a result of the success of the AshteadChurches Community Trust in raising£100,000, a full time youth worker hasbeen employed for a period of threeyears. The appointment of Gary Nash towork with Richard and his team hasfacilitated a wide range of initiatives andhis work has already provided manybenefits for our young people.

• New sports facilities will becomeavailable soon on part of the old ParsonsMead site. This will enable the highlysuccessful youth development workundertaken by Ashtead Cricket Club tocontinue and grow.

These developments are supported by ourlocal police service, which is widelyrespected and regarded as being highlysuccessful. Having an agreed priority withthe community of tackling youth offendingand anti-social behaviour has paid dividendsand there has been a marked reduction inthis area of concern. Great credit is due toour community policeman, Jason Woods andthe PCSO’s who have assisted him. .

The common threads running through thesedevelopments are vision, commitment andcare. Those involved care about youngpeople and are prepared to do something tohelp them.

I applaud their efforts and hope that ourcommunity can build upon their endeavoursto provide the support and facilities ouryoung people deserve.

Ruth saw a poster advertising a car bootsale in the grounds of the Leisure Centre

and decided it was a great opportunity to getrid of some of the family clutter. She handedeveryone a black bin bag to fill. If theyhelped out at the sale, they would eachreceive a share of the profits. The threechildren suddenly became a whirlwind ofentrepreneurial zeal as they charged aroundthe house, randomly stuffing their bags. Ben'sbag split almost immediately as the pointedend of an Action Man's gun tore through theblack plastic. Before long Ruth began toquestion the whole exercise as she followedthe trail of upturned toy boxes and ransackedcupboards.

Ruth's husband, Sam, was also given a blackbag to fill but didn't get further than thebookcase where he agonised over which bookshe could possibly live without. After half anhour, his bag contained an instruction bookleton making your own wine, a Dan Brownpaperback and The Good Pub Guide from1981.

On further examination, the children's bagscontained several of each other's prizedpossessions and there was a great deal ofsquabbling over who owned what and howmuch they could get for it. Ben was veryprudent and wanted to keep certain toys as aninvestment for the future. He had clearlybeen watching far too much daytimetelevision and was convinced that a grubby, broken 'Tinky Winky' Teletubby would beworth a fortune in twenty years time. Daniel,on the other hand, had placed several revisionguides, a couple of school text books and ahistory encyclopaedia into his bag. Sarahcouldn't bear to part with anything.

By the following Friday, Ruth had foundenough surplus clutter to fill the car. Samretrieved several items but Ruthsurreptitiously returned them to the pile. Shereally couldn't think of an occasion when theywould need that novelty umbrella stand. Ithad been in every loft they had owned sincetheir wedding, together with the 'playing card'coffee set that Aunty Sylvia had bought themto use when they played bridge. They hadnever played bridge and, as Aunty Sylvia hadbeen dead for six years, they were probablyfairly safe to get rid of it.

On Sunday they were at the Leisure Centre byeight o'clock, full of optimism as they set uptheir rickety old wallpapering table and laidout their wares. Daniel was put in charge ofthe biscuit tin containing the float and theywere ready to go.

Their first visitor seemed to be a professionalbuyer. Although he examined and rejectedeverything with disdain, he did providereassurance that there weren't any hiddengems on the table.

Their first sale was a box of Action Man stuff.A father and son bought it for £5. Ruthstarted the bidding at £10 but they knockedher down to half price pathetically easily. The coffee set went for £15 and the umbrellastand for £18.

Sales continued steadily. The children andSam were having a great time and haggling farbetter than Ruth, with Daniel emerging aschief negotiator. Sarah insisted on visitingother tables, each time returning with a newpurchase. She bought a large box of 'Bratz'dolls and a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle ofpuppies in a basket which Daniel promptly soldon to an old lady with a miserable lookingbasset hound on a lead. Sarah fortunatelydidn't notice and Daniel made a 50% profit onthe sale. Sam couldn't find his favourite capand Ruth couldn't find the box of sandwichesshe had made. Daniel clearly had a flourishingsales career ahead of him as he depositedanother £10 into the money tin.

Eventually the stall holders started to pack upand, as Ruth gathered their unsold items, shenoticed four bulging black bags under thetable. They were full of new clutter. EvenSam had bought several things, including a boxof rusting carpentry tools which would gonicely with the rusting carpentry tools healready had in the garage at home.

There was £112.25 in the tin but magically thecar seemed as full as when they arrived. Theydecided to go out to lunch to celebrate, viathe charity shop and a sports shop to buySam a new cap.

During the past month or so (Sorry wemissed the deadline last month), theSociety has been active in a number

of ways. For the committee, the publicationand distribution of our Newsletter has beenthe most time consuming – I hope thatmembers have appreciated it. We think thatits good value for your £2 p.a. subscription. So other readers, take note and considerreturning the slip below.

Another domestic issue has been the timingand frequency of our meetings. So members, please add to the figures so far received andreturn your votes for change or not. And non-members, please let us know if the times orfrequency of our meetings is a reason for notjoining.

We are actively supporting BookhamResidents’ Association in their quest for alocal college to offer trades courses, for thenot so high flyers – such as hairdressers, cooking, etc.. We have joined with theother local Residents’ Associations in thestudy of bus services for the area, and weshall host the next bus forum in the AbrahamDixon Hall of the Letherhead Institute on the28th May.

Quite a bit of hot air (not steam) has beenexpended over the idea of moving the oldrailway engine from the back of the LeisureCentre to a more prominent position in the

Red House Gardens by theChildren’s play area. The councilwould like to sell it off to a smallpreserved railway line nearBrighton. They would restore it to workingorder and use it on their railway. The matter is still open for debate – althoughthings will have moved on by the time thatthis reaches you’re your doormat. So checkour website fro the latest news.

A suggestion that the old Water PumpingStation could be transformed into an ArtGallery, has been set back, at leasttemporarily, by the news from the WaterBoard that it is still in use. Rumours are thata block of flats was being planned for thissite; it may still have some substance.

Finally slow progress continues with thescheme to remove the ‘old station staircase’in Station Approach. More news at ourforthcoming AGM.

A reminder of the date of our AGM – this willbe on May 10th at 7pm at the LetherheadInstitute. If you want to know what’s goingon in the Town, and give your views as tohow our new local councillors shouldrepresent us, then come along and makeyourself heard

‘Past Industries of Ashtead, Leatherhead & Bookham’

This is the title of the latest book to be published byour society. It will concentrate on many of theindustrial activities in our area over the years. Thereare plenty of books and documents giving muchdetailed information about our churches and ourlarger houses but we also feel that there should berecords about how the ordinary people lived andworked and earned their living. It was felt that weshould produce this book before all trace of theseworkplaces is lost for ever.

For example, did you know that the first electricblankets were made in Ashtead and that this was oneof the first examples of industrial rehabilitation ofmentally disabled ex-servicemen? We once had an

artificial silk industry here before the works was taken over by the company run bythe inventor of the vacuum cleaner. Ashtead was a centre of photographicmanufacture until the firms became swallowed up in the Kodak empire and thesefactories were then used for making leathercloth and steam cars then pottery.

Ronsons were, of course, famous for the development of cigarette lighters andGoblin for vacuum cleaners but both firms also produced many other products.Bookham had a small engineering works in the early part of the twentieth centurybut once the Great War got under way this enlarged from 2,000 square feet to56,000 square feet. After the war this factory made engines which were used inaround 80 makes of motor cycles, 30 makes of cars and 12 makes of aeroplanes.By the time of the second war hydraulic equipment for over 15 types of plane weremade here and the size of the works had doubled.

Brick making was a local industry whose history goes back to Roman times andcarried on until the 20th century. These and many other industries are describedin the profusely illustrated book and it is hoped that this publication will fill insome of the gaps in our knowledge of the past times in Leatherhead and district.

The book, written by Peter Tarplee, is expected to be available during May andwill cost £8.99.

Copies will be available from local booksellers, our museum and, post-free, fromour Sales Secretary (at 64, Church Street, Leatherhead, KT22 8DP); cheques shouldbe payable to ‘L&DLHS’.

The book will be launched in Leatherhead Museum where there will bedisplays of many of the operations described. This will take place at 7.30pmon Friday, 28th May 2010. All members and friends and anyone interested in thepast history of the area are cordially invited to attend.

Wheels 4 Haiti

Chris Grayling MP recently visited Horton Golf Club in orderto praise the work of our own locally based charity Wheelsfor the World. A large crowd filled the room to hear theChief Executive, Jacky Oliver, of the Charity explain thelatest appeal. We all know that the devastation in Haiti isnot going to be put right quickly. Buildings and bodies needrebuilding. Many have lost limbs or are paralysed. Doctorsand medical professionals are doing an amazing job BUT theneed now is for mobility aids to get these children andadults mobile again.

“Through the Roof can provide these much needed aidsthrough their Wheels 4 Haiti campaign.” Said Mr Grayling.“For the relatively small sum of £40 a recycled and repairedwheelchair can be shipped to Haiti along with a professionalwho can fit the child and teach her how to use the chair.”

He went on to praise the charity and congratulate all those involved for their visionand perseverance in supporting this sort of programme throughout the developingworld, commenting, “People crippled for life, in great need of mobility so that theycan start to rebuild their lives will thank you for what you are doing. I thank you andsupport you in this appeal. Good Luck.”

Friends of Ashtead Village HallOn Friday 5th March, 108 friends assembled in the Peace Memorial Hall Ashtead. Thetables were looking delightfully spring like. After an excellent dinner, and a raffle withnumerous prizes, Geoff Hutchinson entertained us with a fascinating talk on the‘History of Smuggling’. He started by singing Rudyard Kipling’s poem ‘Watch the Wallmy Darling whilst the Gentlemen go by’, accompanying himself on the guitar. He thentold us that from the start, smugglers had been respected by most of the population ofEngland as the taxes on goods, such as tobacco and brandy had been set at adisproportionate level by the government, at one stage up to 40,000 people wereemployed.

To smuggle means ‘to creep about’, and that is what many residents of Kent andSussex did, trying to avoid being detected. They worked at night and communicatedwith owl-like hoots. Goods were brought ashore in rowing boats and then carriedinland by pack horses to landed gentry or people much lower down the social scale, butall approving of smuggling as taxes of up to 100% were being charged to help fundforeign wars. By the middle of the eighteenth century the death penalty for smugglingwas introduced and detection was improved by the employment of coastguards.

Finally the lowering of taxes made the business of smuggling tobacco and spirits lessprofitable. So it diversified to tortoises, ivory, rare birds eggs and finally drugs andeven ‘people’.

The evening was rounded off by a vote of thanks to the speaker from the chairman, who also thanked everyone who had made the evening such a success.

Downsend School 'is extremely successful in meeting its overarching aim ofproviding pupils with a high quality academic education combined with awide range of opportunities. High academic standards result in an

outstanding number of awards to pupils at the ages of 11+ and 13+.' These werejust some of the findings of the independent school inspectors who visited the co-educational preparatory school in November 2009.

The ISI (Independent School Inspectorate) inspection report goes on to say that‘these are the result of good governance and strong leadership, good and oftenexcellent teaching, and pupils’ ability to settle quickly, to persevere, to enjoytheir work and generally behave well in lessons.’

Overall, the report highlighted many strengths, including that ‘Junior School pupilsare outstandingly well cared for’ and ‘The outstanding extra-curricular activitiesand quality of sports all help to make Downsend a school for pupils who enjoy lifeand who say they love their school.’ No major weaknesses were identified, withjust a few recommendations to strengthen future development. Ashtead Cricket Club builds a community clubjust for children - the first of its kind

The last few years have seen a transformation of the club with a new pavilion and expansion of thecolts section and now... We start building a new cricket club for colts alone at Parsons Mead thisyear, a huge task and we believe this will be the first club built for children alone and focusedcompletely on them.

This year we will have 21 teams playing competitive cricket at senior and junior levels - that's 231people of all ages from 9 to 69!. The senior cricket played at the Ground is of the highest standard inamateur cricket. Our junior section is thriving; we have 360 colts learning and playing cricket and aswell as those essential life skills which naturally are part of team play. We also coach in eight stateschools in the area as part of The Cricket Foundation’s ‘Chance to Shine Programme’ which is bringingcricket back into our state schools where little or no cricket is played.

This year we will start our next project which is to create a colts cricket ground in the playing fieldsof the old Parsons Mead School. We have taken a lease on the northern part of the playing field andare in the process of designing a small pavilion appropriate for junior cricket and are starting theprocess of raising funds to restore the playing field to a usable condition.

If you are able to support the club in 2010 your donation no matter how small or large will begratefully accepted and effectively used to benefit all and in particular the developing our coltssection.

Ashtead Youth CentreThis is the first submission from the Youth Centre so I hope people find it interesting.Allow me first to introduce myself, my name is Richard Leary and I have had the pleasure ofworking with Ashtead young people since 1998. I was full-time at first and then decided I liked itso much that when I got a new job I stayed as the part-time Youth Worker in Charge.

Some people wrongly think that working with teenagers is a sufferance but it is in fact quite theopposite. Over the last 12 years I have seen many young people come and go and feel veryprivileged to share moments in their teenage years that will stay with them for the rest of theirlives. Almost without exception the young people I have met were happy to have us around, keen to get involved with what we have to offer, and have grown and developed as a result.

What is Youth Work about? A difficult question to answer - the formal answer would besomething like “offering young people learning and development as they make the transitioninto adulthood”, this type of alternative education is very different to school, of course;although we also offer programmes with formal qualifications.

The reality is a bit more complicated, because yes we offer learning opportunities, but ourstarting point is a relationship with the young people, for some this is not much more than anadult who takes a passing interest, but for many we are someone who takes an active part insupporting them through what can sometimes be a very difficult time in their lives – this cantake place over a number of years. For all of our young people, we are an adult in authority whowill listen and have a reasoned debate allowing a young person to explore ideas without feelingthat we are making judgements.

The centre has gone from strength to strength and with the addition of Gary Nash the ACCTYouth Worker we have been able to expand what we do to a wider age group and more youngpeople. I hope in future articles I can share more of what we do and what young people thinkabout it...

Richard [email protected]

What members think about the Youth CentreMy name is Luke Robinson (aged 16), I have been a member atthe Youth Club for about three years. I was initially interestedbecause I like motor sport and wanted to do the rally karting.

For young people, there isn’t much to do other than hangaround. The Youth Club is a great place to go and meet people(I have made friends that I hope I will keep for life) and youknow that the staff are going to make you feel welcome and dothings that are fun. The best parts for me have been thekarting and the adventure holidays that happen in the summer– you are challenged by the activities and get better at working in a team.

If you ask me what I have got out of being at the youth club, it’s been the opportunity to dothings I would never get the chance to do, and the qualifications from the karting have helpedprepare me for my job in a Car Body Repair Shop. I liked the project so much that I have stayedon as a volunteer to help other people get as much out of it as I did. In January I was nominatedfor a Volunteers Award at the Youth Voice Showcase. That’s me in the picture with CouncillorTim Hall who presented one of the awards.

It has been a pleasure to watch theAshtead & Leatherhead Localdevelop over the past four and ahalf years and for me it has been agreat place to promote my work as aphotographer. I am sure that Zen'sfriendly approach and down to earthpersonality has been a big factor inits success and she understands theneeds of her advertisers, avoidingthe 'pressure sell' which so oftenputs people off advertising.I hear regular praise from people

who have advertised in the mag -the proof of the pudding is of coursethe responses I have had and theextra awareness and business it hascreated for me - I am proud to beassociated with Zen and The Ashtead& Leatherhead Local, and hope tobe so for many years to come. AndyNewbold

Leatherhead Court – Woodlands Road LeatherheadLeatherhead Court in Woodlands Road was once part of the Woodland Park Estate. Theowner at the time was Frederick Carkeet Bryant, a son of the founder of Bryant and May, thematch manufacturer.

In 1904 it was leased to Martha Wood-Tullis and often referred to as a ‘high class school foryoung ladies’. Among the famous pupils who attended the school were Winifred O’Shaughnessy de Wolfe Hudnut, who married Rudolph Valentino and Fay Compton the well-known British stage and screen actress.

In 1933 a small committee was formed by Dame Georgiana Buller, Vice Chairman of theCentral Council for the Care of Cripples, her aim was to establish a Training College for thedisabled so that such people might be able to find suitable employment in either commerce orindustry, and to regain their self- respect. The ten-acre site of Leatherhead Court wasdeemed ideal and was duly purchased for the sum of £8.000. The first 16 trainees werereceived on the 1st November 1934 and the establishment was formally opened by HRH theDuchess of York (the late Queen Mother) as the Cripples Training College (London and District)on the 27th June 1935. In 1942 Her Majesty expressed the wish that the college should, infuture, be known as Queen Elizabeth’s Training College for the Disabled.

In January 1989, Leatherhead Court was the victim of a horrendous fire. The front of thebuilding was totally destroyed. Following a big fund raising effort, a new front was built on tothe remaining buildings. The new building was officially opened by the late Queen Mother inNovember 1992. The front building is now the Headquarters of the Queen ElizabethFoundation for Disabled People.

The College, now called QEF Vocational Services celebrates its seventy fifth birthday this yearand still strives to maintain its original aim of helping disabled people find suitableemployment, and to regain their self respect.

T ransition Ashtead has started a Home Energy Group withthe aim of helping the people and organisations in Ashtead to lower their

energy use and costs. This is in the context of probable steep rises in theprices of oil and gas-based energy and the threat of climate change caused byrising atmospheric CO2 levels. With 27% of all energy in the UK consumed indomestic housing, and 85% of our existing housing stock set to still be with us in2050, improving the energy performance of our existing homes is vital.

The Energy Group invited Russell Smith of Parity Projects (http://www.parityprojects.com/) to talk about how to reduce domestic energy use at a

meeting at the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall on 7th April. Russell’s company offers afull range of services to reduce home energy use - he hasmuch experience of retro-fitting insulation, having triedand tested many types in his own home. He pointed outthat some really cheap things, like draft-proofing andturning the thermostat down one degree, can have a bigimpact on energy use. He stressed the importance oftaking opportunities arising when decorating or plumbing, for example, to improve insulation. His innovativecompany won the DIY category in the Observer EthicalAwards 2008 and the Building Magazine’s 2007 Award forSustainable Refurbishment. The Observer Award judgessaid: “Russell and his company Parity Projects stood outfrom all the other nominations for their new way ofengaging with the public, giving them the tools to reducetheir house’s carbon footprint in an innovative andinspiring way”.

At the same event, the Energy Group also demonstrateddomestic power monitors and a thermal draught detector(both available for loan) as well as other energy savingproducts that are available locally. An important newopportunity for home-owners is the new Government

sponsored “feed-in tariff” scheme, whereby householders can get a long term contract togenerate renewable electricity, using solar power photo-voltaic cells, to use in their ownhome with the option of selling any excess to the local power grid. The financial terms aregenerous and it’s estimated that they will generate a rate of return of about 8 -9% per yearon the initial capital cost for over 20 years. Not bad when you think that you are savingfossil fuel use at the same time!

The Energy Group is offering a range of energy-related advice and support services toAshtead village residents. To fund this, they have been successful in winning agrant from the Local Committees Climate Change Fund recently set up bySurrey CC. The money will be used to provide draught proofing advice andpractical work in the community, lending out energy efficiency monitors, creating a library of low-energy light bulbs for trial in home light fittings (trybefore you buy!) and running more events to explain the real financial andenvironmental benefits of making your property more energy efficient - maybeyou could even start to generate your own electricity.

If you would like to take advantage of the free advice on offer or getinvolved with the Energy Group, see www.transitionashtead.org.ukor contact Derek Smith on 01372 378914 or [email protected].

I have no specific recollection of theapple trees flowering in our garden whenI was a child. It is strange, because I was

naturally garden-minded from an early age,and certainly remember the blossom of thedouble pink hawthorn, which was veryattractive, but did not have the virtue ofproducing fruit. It was not until I went to workat the RHS Gardens at Wisley in my earlytwenties, and saw an enormous andimmaculately kept orchard for the first time, that I was struck by both the peerless beauty, and the painfully fleeting, nature of appleblossom. From then on, each spring has been apatient waiting for the red-pink buds to open.

We bought our present house on thestrength of the full-size, distinctive, characterful apple trees (‘Bramley Seedling’,‘Epicure’, ‘Newton Wonder’ and ‘King of thePippins’) which were flowering on the April daywhen we first looked round. I am notexaggerating, I promise. Indeed, I closed myeyes to a lot of shortcomings in the house forthe sake of those gnarled old trees. I don’tregret it.

Around 1994 in early May, I found myself inNormandy, talking to gardeners about theirwork for the Commonwealth War GravesCommission. I went to the cemetery atHermanville, which had been a Norman appleorchard until it was hastily turned into a burialground on D-Day + 1. The settled peace of theplace was underscored by a scatter of crooked,lichen-encrusted, cider apple trees, their headsof blossom etched against a purple-black sky,the petals falling slowly through the air andsettling, like pink snow, in the narrow beds infront of the dignified, uniform gravestones. Iwondered whether the families of all thosesoldiers from county had derived any comfortfrom knowing that their boys were buried in acountry orchard.

But tall, crooked apple trees are almost a

thing of the past and it saddens me to thinkthat later generations may not experiencesuch generous blossom, seen against the sky. Many, if not most, of the apple trees soldthese days are on what is called ‘semi-dwarfing’ or even ‘dwarfing’ rootstocks, which means that the trees barely grow tallerthan the gardeners who plant them. For smallgardens, these are the obvious choice, ofcourse, especially if the gardener wants togrow more than one tree but, surely, there isstill a place in many gardens for a full-grownorchard tree? This is one grown on a non-dwarfing MM111 or M25 rootstock, andpreferably with the leading shoot pruned insuch a way that two main trunks branch outquite low down, and provide good climbingpractice for the outdoor child. Such a tree, tenor fifteen years down the line, will bring theprecious gift of atmosphere to the garden.Indeed, it might even sell the house one day.

TulipsA striking spring bulb, with an

interesting history, tulips are in flower this month

Tulips are the national flower of Iran and Turkey.First cultivated by the Turks in 1000AD, tulips wereintroduced to Europe in the middle of the 16thcentury. In Holland they became the subject of aphenomenon called ‘Tulipomania’. Due to theirrarity, only a few very rich people could affordthem, which meant the plants became statussymbols.

When the Tulipomania bubble burst, the Dutchcreated the successful bulb-growing business theyhave now. There are now over 3,000 varieties ofcultivated tulips in almost every colour and sizeimaginable.

The natural habitat of tulips is in mountainousregions so they need a period of cold while theyare dormant.

Plant bulbs in November or December, before thefirst frost. Tulips bloom in almost any well drained

soil, but mixin plenty oforganicmatter andfertiliser to encourage vivaciousgrowth. After flowering, deadheadand leave the plant to die downnaturally, so energy is sent to the bulbto store for use next spring.

Some people are allergic to tulipbulbs, so wear gloves while handlingthem. However, during World War II,people in Holland were forced to eattulips. Apparently this was an un-pleasant experience with the tastedescribed as “wet sawdust”. It wasalso a risky undertaking as some partsof the bulb are poisonous.

On 18 June 1940 Churchill declared in theCommons - 'The Battle of France is over...theBattle for Britain is about to begin'. AS such theBattle of Britain was without doubt one of, if notthe, most important victories in British history. Atthe end of it Hitler cancelled all plans to invadeEngland and the Allies maintained a Europeanstronghold from which to launch the eventualoperation to recapture mainland Europe. This bookis the story of that battle: the machines which tookto the air; the tactics employed by each side;gripping accounts of the action; the people whotook part from the Commanders, to the pilots toground crew and plotters. Fascinating facsimiledocuments brings this great battle to life as neverbefore.
