“What the mentors really need to do is to help the new
principal find his or her own way. So they are trained to
ask questions in order to get their protégés to reflect and
make decisions for themselves.”
Arthur Foresta
New Visions for Public Schools
“When it comes to training principals, there really is
nothing better, as long as the mentor is guiding you in the
right direction and has the skills to help you get where
you need to go.” Elaine Fink

Why do you think people do not like to give
feedback?
Think of a situation in your life where you were
uncomfortable or hesitant to give feedback to
someone.
Share that experience with your table team.
Think of a situation you have encountered where
you could have used feedback from someone
(who?) to help find a resolution or make a
decision.
Share that experience with your table team.

Saying It Another Way
In a group, discuss each of these statements. How would you improve them to provide useful feedback?
1. You are too abrupt and threatening when you speak to your teachers.
2. You do not give your teachers an opportunity to express their ideas in staff meetings.
3. I thought you knew that district policy so I do not see why you did that.
4. If too many complaints get to central office, you may have to go job hunting.

Roles for Providing Effective Feedback
• Mentor
• Protégé
• Observer
Effective feedback includes listening, observing behaviors, and asking reflective questions.

Feedback Activity
*Write about a difficult situation that you have had to face. Share in your triad when you are in the role of protege.
*While in a triad each person will assume the role of
protégé, mentor, and observer.
• Role of Protégé- Present the situation and respond to questions from the mentor.
• Role of Mentor- Engage the protégé in dialogue through reflective
questioning and provide him or her with feedback.
• Role of the Observer- Observe behaviors of mentor and protégé and be prepared to provide feedback to them on the process and to extend the learning through discussion.
